Eight Edmond students
led the list when 100 of
the states top public high
school seniors were recog-
nized during the
statewide broadcast of the
Oklahoma Foundation for
Excellence 28th Academic
Awards Banquet recently.
The students attended
either Edmond or Deer
Creek high schools or the
Oklahoma School of
Science and Math.
The students included
Kayla Martin, Parker
LaMascus, Tyler Robision,
Daisy Velasco, Landon
Wright, Steven Kappan,
Yifan Song and Vincent
Po.
The students were
selected from 567 nomi-
nations statewide, repre-
sent 79 schools in 70
Oklahoma school districts.
The 2014 Academic All-
State class is the 28th to
be selected by the
Oklahoma Foundation for
Excellence. Since the
award programs incep-
tion in 1987, some 2,800
high school seniors from
314 school districts have
been named All-State
scholars.
Edmond schools, with
six students, led the state
in representation on the
list of scholars.
Debbie Bendick, execu-
tive director of secondary
education, said, A point of
particular pride for
Edmond is the solid repre-
sentation from each of our
three comprehensive high
schools that includes two
All-Staters from each
school Santa Fe, North
and Memorial.
The selection of the All-
Staters is described by
David Boren, chairman
and founder of the
Oklahoma Foundation for
Excellence, as Oklahomas
most rigorous academic
competition.

KAYLA MARTIN
DEER CREEK HIGH SCHOOL
Martin is a class valedictorian, Junior
Rotarian and a member of 4-H Club and
National Honor Society. In addition to
serving as the Calculus Club
treasurer, she is leading the for-
mation of the Deer Creek High
School chapter of Mu Alpha
Theta math honor society. She
has been the wrestling manager
for five years as well as a member
of the cross country team. As a
Link Crew leader, she helps
freshmen transition to high
school. Her passions are horse showing
and giving horseback riding instruction.
Martin plans to major in engineering at
Oklahoma State University. Scholarship

PARKER LAMASCUS
EDMOND MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL
LaMascus is a National Merit Finalist and
Advanced Placement Scholar with
Distinction. He has earned the positions of
drumline captain and principal percus-
sionist for the Edmond Memorial band. A
member of National Honor
Society and a freshman mentor,
LaMascus is a four-year member
of the schools wind ensemble
and a 13-year private piano stu-
dent. He volunteers at the
Memorial Road Church of Christ
and volunteered at the Instituto
Amicus in Tegucigalpa,
Honduras, in 2013. As an intern
for Mankin Media Systems, he helped
build the company website, among other
duties. LaMascus plans to major in engi-
neering at Oklahoma Christian University.

STEVEN KAPPEN
EDMOND SANTA FE HIGH SCHOOL
Kappen is a National Merit Finalist,
Rensselaer Medalist and
Advanced Placement Scholar
with Honor. A section leader for
the school band and Band
Council historian, he was select-
ed for All-State Band. Kappen
serves as president of National
Honor Society, captain of the
academic team and an officer in
the Friends of Rachel Club. He
also has been active in the Junior Classical
League. He has been a volunteer musician
for community events and has helped with
the Food Bank, Walk to Cure Diabetes and
planting trees in the community. Kappen
plans to major in chemical engineering at
the University of Oklahoma. Scholarship

VINCENT PO
OKLAHOMA SCHOOL OF SCIENCE
AND MATHEMATICS
An Eagle Scout, Po is a 2014
Oklahoma Music Olympics
champion in violin solo, viola
solo and string quartet. The
Edmond resident has been
active in the Oklahoma Youth
Orchestra and has participated
four years in the Oklahoma
Summer Arts Institute. Po is an
Advanced Placement Scholar
and Student Council chair. Prior to joining
OSSM, he attended Classen School of
Advanced Studies, where he was active in
Student Council and Earth Club. He enjoys
music composition, learning foreign lan-
guages and following the VlogBrothers
video blog. He volunteered for two weeks
in Ecuador working on an organic farm. Po
plans to major in electrical engineering at

TYLER ROBISON
EDMOND MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL
Robison is a National Merit Finalist, a
U.S. Presidential Scholars Program candi-
date and Advanced Placement Scholar with
Distinction. She has been active in Future
Farmers of America and earned
second place in the local and
state Greenhand Quiz competi-
tions. She also participated in
Quiz Bowl at the local and state
levels, with her team earning
third place in the State
Electricity Career Development
Event. Robison is a member of
the Oklahoma High School
Honor Society and National Honor Society
and has volunteered for the Edmond
Animal Shelter. She plans to major in bio-
chemistry at the University of Oklahoma.

YIFAN SONG
EDMOND SANTA FE HIGH SCHOOL
A U.S. Geography Olympiad state cham-
pion, Song is a National Merit Finalist and
Advanced Placement Scholar.
He is president and founder of
his schools History Club; vice
president of National Honor
Society; and active in Youth
Leadership Edmond, the
Oklahoma Historical Society
and the Oklahoma City Chinese
Baptist Church. He is a mem-
ber of his schools state cham-
pion academic team, which will compete
in the National Tournament of Academic
Excellence. Song has contributed more
than 460 hours of community service at
the University of Oklahoma Medical
Center, the OU Cancer Center and the
Oklahoma History Center. He plans to
major in accounting and history at the
Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.

DAISY VELASCO
EDMOND NORTH HIGH SCHOOL
Velasco is a National Hispanic
Scholar and Advanced
Placement Scholar with
Honors. A band Letterman, she
is flute section leader for
Edmond North High School
Band and participates in Mu
Alpha Theta math honor socie-
ty, Teens Against Bullying and
the Gay-Straight Alliance. She is
also a member of Spanish Club, Key Club
and Kiwanis Educating Youth Club. Valasco
plans to pursue a degree in computer tech-
nology or engineering. Scholarship spon-

LANDON WRIGHT
EDMOND NORTH HIGH SCHOOL
A class valedictorian, Wright
is an Advanced Placement
Scholar with Honors and an
Oklahoma Distinguished
Scholar. He is president of
National Honor Society, a sena-
tor in Student Council and sec-
retary for Mu Alpha Theta math honor
society. He is also active in Youth
Leadership Edmond. Wright is an Eagle
Scout who has volunteered more than 700
service hours through Boy Scouts. He also
runs cross country and participates in
Chesapeake Junior Crew rowing team.
Wright plans to major in engineering at the
University of Oklahoma. Scholarship spon-
