0. FOREWORD

0.1 Thi s I ndi an St andar d ( Par t I ) was adopt ed by t he I ndi an St andar ds
Institution on 10 May 1977, after t he draft finalized by t he Indust ri al
Safety Advisory Commi t t ee had been approved by t he Executive
Commi t t ee.
0.2 The industrial safety faceshields ( wi t h plastics visor ) covered by this
specification can be used in wosdwor ki ng operat i ons against chips and
sawdust; in met al machi ni ng operat i ons against flying particles; in buffing,
polishing and gri ndi ng operations wher e particles may strike t he face; in
spot welding; and in t he handl i ng of corrosive mat eri al s. They are not
acceptable for protection against heavy wel di ng and gas cutting operat i ons.
0.3 In t he preparat i on of t hi s st andard, assistance has been t aken from
U. S. Feder al Specification L-F-36 C ' Indust ri al faceshields' , published
i n Sept ember 1963, and t he Ameri can St andar d Z-87. 1-1968 ' Practice for
occupat i onal and educat i onal eye and face prot ect i on' , published by t he
Ameri can Nat i onal St andar ds Inst i t ut e.
0.4 For t he purpose of deciding whet her a particular requi rement of this
st andar d is complied with, t he final value, observed or calculated,
expressing t he result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance
with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places ret ai ned in t he rounded
off value should be t he same as t hat of t he specified value in this st andard.
1. SCOPE
1.1 Thi s st andard ( Part I ) covers industrial faceshields with t ransparent
plastics visor for protection of t he face from flying particles and from sprays
or splashes of hazar dous liquids, mol t en metals and slags.
2. TYPES AND CLASSES
2.1 Type s Faceshields shall be of t hree types ment i oned below :
Type 1 Faceshields wi t hout crown protector

Type 2 Faceshields with crown protector
Type 3 Faceshields with provision for at t achment to a safety
hel met .
2.1.1 All t he above types of faceshields may be with or without chin
covers.
2.2 Cl as s es Faceshields of Type 3 shall be of either of t he two classes
ment i oned below :
Class 1 Faceshields for at t achment to a full br i m hel met
Glass 2 Faceshields for at t achment to brimless hel met
3. REQUI REMENTS
3.1 General Re qui r e me nt s
3.1.1 Design The faceshields covered by this specification shall be
designed to provi de prot ect i on to t he face ( t hat is, t he front of t he head
including forehead, eyes, cheeks, nose, mout h, and chin ) and neck, when
requi red, from flying particles and sprays or splashes of hazar dous liquids,
mol t en met al and slag. Type 1 and Type 2 faceshields shall be designed
for comfort and are to be worn directly on t he t he user' s head. Type 3
shall be designed as an at t achment for safety helmets.
3.1.2 Materials Mat eri al s used in t he manufact ure of faceshields
shall combi ne mechani cal st rengt h and lightness of weight and shall be
non-i rri t at i ng to t he skin. Met al parts shall be corrosion resistant. Plastics
part s shall be of slow-burning t ype.
3.2 Speci fi c Re qui r e me nt s
3.2.1 Type 1 The faceshields shall consist essentially of a headgear,
including an adjustable headband and crown band; a durabl e tilting visor
support wi t hout crown protector; colourless t ransparent visor and a
removabl e and replaceable sweat band. The faceshield shall be similar t o
Fi g. 1 and shall comply wi t h t he test requi rement s specified in 4.
3.2.1.1 Headgear The faceshield headgear shall be fabricated of
good grade vulcanized fibre, acetate but yrat e or equal material of at least
1.4 mm thickness. Headgear shall consist of a crown band of at least 25 mm
wi dt h, an adjustable headband and sweat band. The adjusting devices
shall be made of non-sparking mat eri al and shall have no sharp edges.
The design shall be such as to hold t he visor and visor support comfortably
and firmly in place on t he wearer' s head, and shall provi de for tilting
t he visor away from t he face. Adjustable bands for t he faceshield headgear
shall be of t he positive locking t ype of adequat e range. The headgear
shall be adjustable, wi t hout t he use of tools, and shall hold firmly in place

after bei ng so adjusted. The crown strap or band shall be at t ached
t o, and ext end bet ween, t he front and r ear centres or from t he mi ddl e
sides of t he headband. It shall form an arc over t he head to assist in
positioning and hol di ng t he headgear i n place. All mechani sms and
movement s shall be protected so t hat t he wearer' s hai r cannot catch i n
t he adjusting devices. Not less t han t he forehead portion of t he headband
shall be provi ded with a removable and replaceable cushioned sweat band
t hat shall be non-i rri t at i ng and non-toxic.

3.2.1.2 Visor support The faceshield visor support shall be furnished
wi t hout a crown protector. Visor supports shall be made of vulcanized
fibre, acet at e but yrat e or equal mat eri al at least 1.4 mm thick and designed
for easy removal or repl acement of visor. Visor supports shall be provi ded
wi t h snap fastener studs or a combi nat i on of snap fastener studs wi t h
other suitable hol der studs for at t achi ng t he visor in a secure manner .
Studs shall be equidistantly spaced to provi de for maxi mum i nt erchange-
ability. Support shall be at t ached to t he headgear by friction joints whi ch
will permi t tilting of t he visor either upward to be clear of t he horizontal
vision line or downwar d to a position of maxi mum protection wi t h

cl earance for t he nose, and over eye-glasses or goggles when used. The
tension of t he tilting mechani sm shall be sufficient to hol d t he visor in up
or down position wi t hout slippage.
3.2.1.3 Visor Unless otherwise specified, each faceshield shall be
furnished wi t h a colourless, t ransparent plastics visor conforming to t he
dimensions given below for t he visor size specified. Plastics visors shall be
similar to t hat shown in Fi g. 2 and shall compl y wi t h t he test requi re-
ment s given in 4. The faceshields of Type 1 shall be furnished wi t h visor
of size A.

3. 2. 1. 4 Sweatbands Sweat bands shall be of non-toxic, non-irritating,
cushioning mat eri al and shall be of removabl e and repl aceabl e t ype.
Sweat bands shall cover not less t han t he forehead portion of t he headband.
3.2.2 Type 2 The faceshields shall consist essentially of a headgear,
visor support with crown protector, visor and a removabl e and replaceable
sweat band. The faceshields shall be similar to Fig. 3, and shall conform
to t he test r equi r ement s given in 4.
3.2.2.1 Headgear The faceshield headgear shall be of t he adjust-
able positive-locking type and shall be similar to t he requi rement s for
Type 1 headgear ( 3.2.1.1 ).
3.2.2.2 Visor support The faceshield visor supports shall be furnish-
ed wi t h a crown protector at least 70 mm wi de from the t op of t he visor

support at its maxi mum wi dt h. Cr own protector shall be made of
vul cani zed fibre, acet at e but yrat e or equal mat eri al , at least 1.4 mm thick
and shall be an i nt egral part of t he visor support. Visor support shall be
provi ded with snap fastener studs or a combi nat i on of snap fastener studs
wi t h ot her suitable hol der studs for at t achi ng t he visor in a secure manner .

ability. Tensi on joints and tilting mechani sm shall conform to t he appl i -
cable requi rement s for Type 1 visor supports ( 3.2.1.2 ).
3. 2. 2. 3 Visor Unless otherwise specified each faceshield shall be
furnished wi t h colourless t ransparent visor conforming to sizes ment i oned
under 3. 2. 1. 3. Visor shall be similar to Fig. 2 and shall comply with t he
test r equi r ement s given in 4.
3. 2. 2. 4 Sweatbands Sweat bands for t he faceshield headgear shall
comply with t he requi rement s for Type 1 sweat band ( 3.2.1.4 ).
3. 2. 3 Type 3 The faceshields shall be of t he tilting t ype designed for
quick and easy at t achment to, and removal from, safety hel met s. Class 1

faceshields shall be designed for at t achi ng to full-brim helmets and class 2
faceshields shall be suitable for at t achi ng to brimless type hel met . The
faceshield shall consist essentially of an at t achment mechani sm, an
adjustable visor support and a colourless t ransparent plastics visor.
3.2.3.1 Attachment mechanism The device or met hod of at t achment
of t he Type 3 faceshield assembly to t he safety hel met shall provide a firm
sure fit to ensure protection and permi t easy repl acement . Met al or
plastics frames shall be provi ded for hol di ng t he assembly to t he hel met
and supporting vi sor. Snap-on at t achment s are permi t t ed provi ded t he
assembly is support ed by a st rap or equal met hod whi ch will hol d t he
faceshield securely to hel met and not become accidently det ached in use.
3. 2. 3. 2 Class 1 faceshields Class 1 faceshields shall be designed for
at t achi ng to safety hel met s wi t h a full br i m similar to Fig. 4. At t achment
mechani sm shall include friction j oi nt s for hol di ng t he visor and permi t
easy tilting upwar d so t hat bot t om of visor is above t he hel met br i m.
Tensi on of t he friction j oi nt s shall be such t hat t he visor can be hel d in t he
up or down position wi t hout slipping. The faceshield shall be furnished
wi t hout a crown protector; visor size and thickness shall be as ment i oned
under 3. 2. 1. 2. Th e faceshield shall be similar t o Fig. 4 and shall comply
wi t h t he test requi rement s given in 4.
3. 2. 3. 3 Class 2 faceshields Class 2 faceshields shall be designed for
at t achi ng to safety caps ( brimless with visor ) similar to Fig. 5. They
shall include a crown protector at least 70 mm wi de at maxi mum wi dt h.
Crown prot ect or shall be made of vulcanized fibre, acetate but yrat e
or an equal mat eri al at least 1. 4 mm thick. Friction j oi nt s shall comply
with t he requi rement s for class 1. Visor size and thickness shall be as given
under 3. 2. 1. 2. Unless otherwise specified ( see 5.2 ), class 2 faceshields
shall be similar to Fig. 5 and shall comply wi t h t he test requi rement s
given in 4.
3.3 Speci al Vi s or s and Acces s ori es When special or addi t i onal visors
are requi red such as fibre visor, coloured plastics, special sizes or thickness,
t hey shall be as specified and shall be designed to fit t he visor support and
shall be i nt erchangeabl e wi t h clear-plastics visor of t he same manufact urer.
Whe n specified ( see 5.2 ), special accessories such as chin protectors and
wi der crown protectors for Type 2 and Type 3, Class 2 shall be furnished.
3.4 I nt erchangeabi l i t y All part s havi ng t he same manufact urer' s par t
number shall be directly and completely i nt erchangeabl e wi t h each other
with respect to installation and performance.
3.5 Mar ki ng Each headgear , plastics visor, or at t achment shall be
per manent l y and legibly mar ked whereby t he manufact urer may be readily
identified. Plastics visors shall also be marked with their thickness to t he
nearest 0. 1 mm and coloured visor for glare prot ect i on shall bear t he

shade number designation. Addi t i onal marki ng, when requi red, shall be as
specified ( see 5.2 ).
3.6 Wo r kma ns hi p Wor kmanshi p shall be such t hat all faceshields
furnished shall be free from any defects which mi ght affect appearance,
functionability, or serviceability.
4. TESTS
4.1 Vi s ual and Di me ns i o na l Exami nat i on Each of t he sample
shields selected shall be visually and dimensionally exami ned to verify
compliance with this specification. Any shield in t he sample containing
one or mor e visual or di mensi onal defects shall not be t aken for further

tests and if t he number of defective shields in any sample exceeds 2.5 per-
cent of t he sample size, this shall be t he cause for rejection of t he lot
represent ed by t he sampl e.

4.2 Phys i cal Re qui r e me nt s Two faceshields from t he sample shall be
selected at r andom and tested as given below. For tests on faceshields of
Type 3, t he latter shall be at t ached t o t he appl i cabl e hel met s and t hen
tested. Failure of either faceshield to meet any of tests given below shall
be t he cause for rejection of t he entire lot.
4. 2. 1 Impact Resistance Mount t he faceshield on a hol der consisting
of a st andar d wooden head form, size 7, mount ed vertically on a wooden
support fastened securely to a base. Do this so t hat t he headband fits
snugly ar ound t he peri phery of t he base of t he head and t he crown strap
is in contact with t he crown portion of t he head. Provide an addi t i onal
supporting block, approximately 25 mm wi de and curved t o conform t o t he
shape of t he plastics visor, as a support for t he visor at its lower end or, if
t he faceshield is provi ded with a chin rest, as a support under t he chin rest.
The faceshield will t hen rest in a position such t hat t he axis of t he

cylindrical visor is hori zont al and t he outer surface of t he visor is upper-
most . Make t he i mpact test at r oom t emper at ur e ( 20 t o 30C) under
nor mal humi di t y conditions. Dr op freely from a hei ght of 1 met re on to
t he apex of t he visor at a point approxi mat el y 8 cm below t he t op edge of
t he visor, a 22. 5 mm di amet er steel ball, weighing approxi mat el y 50 g.
The visor shall not be fractured nor separat ed nor removed from any of its
points of fastening to t he headgear by t he i mpact of t he steel ball.
4. 2. 2 Penetration Resistance Mount t he faceshield in t he manner des-
cribed in 4.2.1 and test under similar conditions. Dr op freely a poi nt ed
projectile of suitable size, consisting of a new sewing machi ne needl e
number , 135 17, size 25, fastened into a hol der, weighing approxi mat el y
50 g, needl e point downwar d, from a hei ght of 1 met re on to t he apex of
t he visor at a point approxi mat el y 8 cm below t he t op edge of t he visor.
The projectile may be gui ded, but not restricted, in its fall by droppi ng it
t hr ough t he t ube ext endi ng to within approxi mat el y 10 cm of t he faceshield
visor. The visor shall not be fractured nor pierced t hrough by t he i mpact
of t he projectile.
4. 2. 3 Visible Transmittance Det ermi ne t he total visible ( luminous )
t ransmi t t ance of clear or coloured visors by any st andard met hod. Clear
visors shall t ransmi t not less t han 85 percent of t he incident visible
radi at i on. Coloured visors shall t ransmi t as follows:

4.2.4 Flammability Insert one end of a 13 cm 1.2 cm strip of t he
mat eri al in a blue-flame Bunsen bur ner . Incl i ne t he strip at 45 with t he
13 cm longitudinal axis hori zont al . The burner fl ame shall be 20 mm
hi gh. After 30 seconds, remove t he bur ner from t he strip and allow t he
strip to burn. Measure t he rat e of burni ng. The clear or coloured plastics
visor shall bur n at a r at e not great er t han 8 cm per mi nut e.
4.2.5 Disinfection All faceshield materials shall be such as to with-
st and, wi t hout visible deterioration, washing in detergents and war m water,
rinsing to remove all traces of detergent, and disinfection by one of t he
following me t hods :
a) Immersi on for 10 minutes in a solution of formalin made by
placing one par t of 40 percent formal dehyde solution in 9 part s
of wat er at r oom t emper at ur e ( 25C );
b) Subjection to a moist at mosphere of formal dehyde for a peri od

c) Immersion for 10 minutes in a solution of modified phenolics,
hypochlorite, or quaternary ammonium compounds in strength
specified by the manufacturer at room temperature ( 25C ).
5. PACKING AND MARKING
5.1 Faceshields and accessories shall be packed in a manner which shall
ensure safe delivery at destination.
5.2 The containers shall be marked with at least the following information:
a) Name and type of faceshield,
b) Special visors for Type 1, Type 2 or Type 3, Class 2 if provided,
and
c) Special visors or accessories, if provided ( see 3.3 ).
5.2.1 The faceshields may also be marked with the ISI Certification
Mark.
NOTE The use of the ISI Certification Mark is governed by t he provisions of
the Indi an Standards Institution (Certification Mar ks) Act and the Rules and
Regulations made t hereunder. The ISI Mark on products covered by an Indi an
St andard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the
requirements of t hat st andard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and
quality control which is devised and supervised by ISI and operated by the producer.
ISI marked products are also continuously checked by ISI for conformity to t hat
st andard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the
use of the ISI Certification Mark may be grant ed to manufacturers or processors,
may be obtained from t he Indi an St andards Inst i t ut i on.
6. SAMPLING
6.1 Lot All faceshields of the same type, class, and size presented at one
time shall be considered a lot for the purpose of inspection.
6.2 Sampl e Size The number of faceshields to be selected for a lot
shall depend on the size of the lot and shall be as given below:
