The Heartbeat of Green Country

A Note to the event planners out there: Dont do that!
I was gathering information for the May issue and I noticed the drop in
events all over Green Country. All I can say is, NOOOO!!! Dont do
that! Anything but that!
Some events have been going on for quite a while and others not
so much. The problem in cancelling an event just for now is that you
create a void that cannot be simply refilled when you come back to
it. By cancelling, youve set a couple of things in motion that cannot
be undone. First, people who expect your event to be happening the
second weekend of May for example will be expecting your event
to be happening the second weekend in May this year too. If these
people make the trip, expecting your event and its not there, theyll be
pretty angry at the whole town, not just your event organizers. Second,
once youve dropped off, people fill the time with something else and
chances are pretty great that you will be starting over from square one
when you pick your event back up in the future. Scale it back, change
your whatever to make it happen, but the show must go on if you plan
to do this in the future. Fans, vendors, local merchants will all change
their lives to find a new event and yours will fall off their radar.
If you are starting a new event for 2014 we salute and applaud you,
but youll need to get the word out with lots of lead time. You will also
need to advertise in order to get the word out. Some people wait until
three to four weeks before their event and post information. Bad idea.
Many of us are planning on where to go in the spring and summer
months well in advance and those who do a great job of branding,
filling and planning for the events complete and total success get our
attention fastest. Try to walk the event site to get a feel for where
you are placing everyone. What about parking? What about ADA
requirements? What about generators? I talked to a vendor at a recent
festival and despite the fact he had a table with cards, he was placed
downwind of a food truck that used a generator, making him have to
breathe in fumes as well as yell at all his customers because of the
noise. Not a good way to make people want to return next year.
We want to help Green Country share in the information thats going
on, but we cant help you get the word out if we dont have sufficient
info. Let us help you. We have lots of resources and access to folks who
can help you make it spectacular, but we cant help if you dont ask.
Lastly, if you are ready to roll, dont get silly with just a Facebook page
and nothing else. We spend large amounts of time digging information
from all over the place and nothing is more annoying than being told
information can be found at www.blahblahblah.com and its not there
(or its old data). ARGH! We just wasted time

OKLAHOMA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

klahoma Renaissance Festival hits its 19th

anniversary! We couldnt be more thrilled
(and honored) to be a part of the Oklahoma
Renaissance Festival. What other folks in our
great state covet as a special treat, we take
for granted because its right in our backyard. Perhaps its
time to mend our ways and show the folks at Castleton
how much we love the Renaissance Festival.

2 foods, Okie foods, beer and wine and plenty of

of ethnic
sweets to make it all the more special. The shopping is like
none other with the Silk Road, Italian Village and all sorts
of Made In Oklahoma vendors who have items for all
tastes and budgets. AND, why not rent a costume to make
yourself part of the action, eh?
f you arent quite ready for the fun to
end, they have all sorts of special evening
entertainment as well and weve heard from
many people that each and every specialty
event is just f
antastic, so be sure to see whats
happening with the Masqued Ball, Ceilidh (Scottish
dance), the Pirates Feaste and more at www.okcastle.com.
The Festival runs weekends May 3 through June 1 and
Memorial Day. We have a lot of free passes to give away
to some lucky readers so check in with us on Facebook
or Twitter (mypulsemag) or on our Website at www.
mypulsemag.com.
et the Merriment Commence!

Huzzah!
f you havent been to the OKRF in a while,
youll be pleasantly surprised (and amazed)
at how much things have changed. Theyve
added so many fun and unique shows for this
year; where else can you go for a group of
singing mermaids? Or how about pirates who embrace the
comedy and sing better than Justin Bieber? There arent
a whole lot of places where you can watch women dangle
30 feet off the ground wrapped around a length of f
abric
or catch a bunch of guys battling it out via horseback
in full body armor. Yep, its all there and all part of your
admission.
ow, no trip to the Renn Fest is complete
without a bit of shopping and eating. You
dont have to go the traditional route with
the turkey legs either. They have all sorts

www.mypulsemag.com

reception are the biggest considerations for your day. Be willing

to have your wedding earlier in the day or on a different day than
Saturday (Friday evening is okay too) if you are getting close to the
wire. Many venues will work with you if you are willing to have a morning
ceremony and have it all over by 3-4 pm, you could get a great venue
and a great price to boot. Two locations that still have a few spots
open for May and June are Kilharens Lodge in Muskogee (see below)
and The Center at Sparrowhawk Mountain in Tahlequah (see their ad on
Cherokee pages). If you are ready to work on the date, ask your venue
who they work with for all the particulars. Many venues offer one-stop
shopping for all sorts of things. For example, Sparrowhawk has lodgings
for overnight guests, an on-site catering firm and they work with plenty
of folks in town who can make your day beautiful. Kilharens will be able
to help you with all sorts of things from food to flowers and they can
work with all sorts of color schemes. Both locations can host outdoor
and indoor weddings/receptions.
Invitations: Know a graphic artist? Then kiss-up to them with the favor
of an invitation design. If you have ideas on what you want, make sure
you help them out by showing them your favorites (Pinterest has all
kinds of ideas). Save a few bills by printing them out via a kit or take
them to a printer and do your printing yourself. We had a friend who
saved big by having her invitations and save the date cards printed
at Northeastern States print lab. Better still, NSU printed everything in
less than 48 hours for about one-third the cost of other printers. Make
sure you have a few extras on hand for mistakes.
Now, go forth and show your love for one another and congratulations
from your friends at The Pulse.

PULSE PRO - WEDDING SEASON

Now, we all know there are all sorts of reasons a wedding plan gets
delayed, thus forcing the issue of last-minute choosing of flowers,
dresses, colors, locations, caterers well, you get the picture. Even if
youve decided that you cant live without each other another day, you
have choices on how that day plays out. You only need to know where
to go to get the answers you seek. You may not always get exactly what
you expected, but you can expect to find things that will still make
everything special.
Before you begin, you have to accept that you are late to the party
and you may not get everything you want in the exact way you want it
to play out. BUT, if you can take a few moments and write out all that
needs to be done and then prioritize on what you are more flexible
about and what things you absolutely cannot flinch on, you might be
pleasantly surprised in the end. Every girls priorities are different, but
you have to ask yourself just how crazy you want to make yourself (and
those around you) over little things. Always keep on mind that this is
only one day.
Dont get finicky on the flowers: if you cant find a florist around the
corner that can accommodate you on exactly the flower arrangements
you want, you may want to make this a less-important priority. I mean,
come on, its flowers, so have samples of the colors you would like to
have and be willing to work with your local florist or take a day and
shop around if the flowers are that important. If you have a friend who
can perhaps arrange flowers for you, see if they might be able to make
centerpieces, pew caps or boutonnieres and be willing to use dried
flowers, silk flowers or have a plan B for what you want.
Its all in the dress: If you havent picked out your wedding dress for
a June wedding yet, then you are probably not too picky about the
other things, but you will have to pick something off the rack and see
if a tailor can help you to alter to get close to what you want. Having
an honest friend (who will tell you if your choices arent working) and
someone who knows something about sewing and alterations can be
invaluable to finding that dress last-minute. You can make a veil (or hire
that job out) and having comfy shoes is super-important. Do not cheap
out on ill-fitting shoes! Ouch
Color me up, baby! Your wedding colors are easy, sure, but you might
want to select two colors instead of just one. Its easier to work with
a few colors than only one as your accent color. Besides, if baby pink
is your accent color, you may have some cranky groomsmen as well as
washed-out redheads. Get the picture?
Sights and sounds: Photography and reception music can be a mix
of professionals and some friends who have no qualms about picking
up a couple of disposable cameras or bringing their iPod and giving
the party a hand. You dont need a deejay for six hours. After two, the
party should be rolling along, so let others help you out. Your friends
will know what works for you better than strangers and candid photos
are oftentimes the best ones.
Bring on the cake!: If you are planning a small affair, if this is a second
(or third, fourth) wedding, dont spend huge amounts of money on
huge cakes, a big sit-down dinner and all that. A buffet dinner, a smaller
cake and some snacks (keep food out if you are allowing drinking) are
plenty. All that craziness of a big reception with all kinds of elegant
fare is ridiculous. You also dont have to get everyone drunker than
sailors on shore leave. A great reception shouldnt be a drunken freefor-all. If you know of a good bartender, ask if they would want to serve
for a few hours or go the beer/wine route and forego the bartender.
Location, location, location: Yep, the location for your ceremony and

Big music festiveness in T-Town with

all the art you can eat
by: Jennifer Jones

Well have more about all of the music at many of the festivals
in Tulsa on our Music pages, but we thought it worth mentioning
that there are some fests where the grub can also be the whole
point of the trip. With Blues & BBQ, Rooster Days and Mayfest all
coming at us in rapid-fire succession, whats an Okie to do? Why
hit them all, of course!

The month starts with Germanfest at 1429 Terrace Drive May 2-4.
What else is there after a schnitzel and some brats with a good
beer to wash it all down? It dont get no better than that! Checkout
all the art and dancing to make it even better. (918) 744-6997
Rather have something more down-home? What about the Bixby
BBQ n Blues Festival at Washington Irving Park? We think the
name says it all, but theyve got more to say on their Website. The
film crew from BBQ Pitmasters may be there to film. You know
its serious if a national TV crew is showing up, so dress pretty, be
on your best behavior and get full-up on some of the best BBQ
in these parts, because it wont be back for a while. Get more at
www.bixbyrotarybbq.com or by calling (918) 296-0036.

You get a break from eating salad once again with Rooster Days
on Main Street in Broken Arrow May 9-11. Its part carnival,
part art market, part foodie fun and all good times with a pinch
of rodeo thrown in. If your kids are ready to fill themselves on
candy and fun junk food, this is the place to be, but they are also
offering live music so check it out while the little ones ride the TiltA-Whirl. Get your details at www.roosterdaysfestival.com or call
(918) 251-1518.

If you need to run off all those calories, then the Color Vibe 5K at
Tulsa Expo Square on May 10 might be just the ticket. (435) 5540134
If you arent much of a runner, but you are a big Red-die then
the BOK has the cure at the Red Dirt Round-Up May 10. Its a
celebration of the Okie music that only our great state has for
you. (918) 894-4445/www.bokcenter.com
The East Village (in Tulsa, not NYC) is celebrating life as we know
it with the East Village Second Saturday Street Fest on May 10 on
3rd Street. Food, art, mural painting and festy-ness abound. (918)
582-1881/www.eastvillagetulsa.org

Nothing goes better with BBQ than a little car action. Check out
the Tulsa Pontiac Nationals & BOP Challenge at Tulsa Raceway
Park on May 3. Stick around for the car show encompassing the
old Pontiacs, GMCs and Oakland vehicles. Drool-worthy shiny
things abound. (918) 798-2765

For something a bit more art-minded, the Tulsa Mayfest fits the
bill with arts of all kinds and shapes including music, performing
arts and plenty of the take-home variety to name only a few, but
the foodie kind is not to be missed. They have all kinds of ethnic
foods along side hot dogs and festy food, so theres something
for everyone. With plenty of sensory experiences for the whole
family, its quite a special place to visit. Mayfest runs May 1517 on 3rd and Main in Tulsa and you can learn more at www.
tulsamayfest.org or call (918) 582-6435 with specific questions.

Restoring Harmony Powwow is at the Westside YMCA at 5400 S.

Olympia on May 3; stickball, showing of the film Bully and the
grand entry parade are only the beginning to a great day of
good times. (918) 382-2217
Owasso is just a quick jaunt up 169 and it makes for a perfect
day of family fun with Trail Days May 8-11. Celebrate all that
got Owasso to where it is today and celebrate the Wild West
(with skateboards if need be) while you are at it. (918) 272-2141

We oftentimes cover events in the town for which a county is

named, and we have much to say about what Wagoner Town is
up to for May and June

The month starts off at The Canebrake where theyve made R&R
a household phrase, but they didnt stop there this year. The
Canebrake is hosting a spring migration bird walk with the Indian
National Audobon Society on May 3 at 8 am and they are also
hosting a patio grill cooking class on May 17. For more, call them
at (918) 485-1810. Make sure you tell them that The Pulse sent
you.

We couldnt find a lot for Coweta for May but we end up back
in Wagoner for June with Summerfest June 5-7, where the happy
days of summer give way to evenings of outdoor music, Midway
rides, plenty of snack-y goodness and lots to make you want to
get out and enjoy the sunny days of summer before the heat of
July kicks in. It happens at Maple Park and well have more in
June, but we wanted to give you a hint of things to come to plan
your time accordingly.

TULSA CONTINUED...

If you are in the market for some new sparkly things, why not
make a date for the Gem Faire at Tulsa Expo Center May 30-31?
June is also jumping with tunes with Tuesdays in the Park in Broken
Arrow going on June 3, 10, 17 and 24, 7 9 pm at Central
Park (1500 S. Main Street). Bring your picnic materials or enjoy
the concessions, but no need to hire a sitter because all are kidfriendly, so bring a big blanket to relax for a few hours in the
evening. Find out whos coming at www.artsba.org or call (918)
251-4274.

Ready to run some more? Then the Full Moon Run May 17 at
Veterans Park in Tulsa should do it. Stick around for the after
party complete with concert and plenty of runner types you can
talk to. (918) 596-2001
ALERT! Something NEW awaits you! The Hop Jam at the Brady
Arts District on May 18. Its beer and music, need we say more?
Okay, how about HANSON? Yep, theyll be there.
The Tulsa Music Festival will fill in your Memorial Day weekend
with a grand time on May 24 at Tulsa new Guthrie Green. If you
havent been yet, make a point to be there (and its FREE). This
place is Fab-You-Lous! (918) 810-5203
Okay, enough of the feel good we got something special for the
hunter-gatherers in Green Country. The R. K. Gun Show hits Tulsa
Expo Square May 24-25 and as before, we state yet again that
they have plenty to make you yearn for deer season. More at
(563) 927-8179.

TULSA COUNTY

Dont rush right home from Mayfest, just cruise up the road to 2nd
and Elgin to the Blue Dome Arts Festival where theres more music,
arts and fun for all to be had right in the heart of the Blue Dome
District. We love how the Blue Dome District keeps us in touch with
who we are as Okies and they make sure that their music and art
line-ups reflect all the talent that is right here in the Sooner State.
Show them some love while you are there May 16-18. See their
Facebook page for details.

If your ride is more the two/three-wheel variety, then Brookside

Rumble and Roll happens June 5 in the Brookside District where
the family folks are also showing up. Its fun and plenty of loud
pipes for all. Stay safe and please watch out for the bikers this
summer! (918) 260-7680, www.rumbleandroll.com
Be warned, theres more to Tulsa than meets the eye: there are
many concerts at the BOK, Brady Theater and Cains Ballroom as
well as at the arts and crafts festivals, along with more to come in
June too! Let Julie Watson fill you in.
Over the weekend of June 6-8, Tulsa Pride Block Party happens at
the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center (get your rainbow wear to show
your support), The Tulsa Tough Ride & Race happens in DT Tulsa, so
get that bike ready to ride, Quilt Tulsa will be at Expo Square and
The Flying Pig Outdoor Market happens in Owasso. There are lots
of horse-related events in Tulsa as well, so keep it here for more.
Be sure to check out our Music pages and Rodeo for all music and

Stilwell and all of Adair County celebrates their heritage every

day with the quiet lifestyle the area is known for, but once a
year, the town of Stilwell gets a little crazy (quietly crazy!) with
the Stilwell Strawberry Festival, held Mothers Day weekend.
This year, it happens May 7-10 with the big finale May 10 in
downtown.
They have a carnival planned for all days with two special nights
where a wristband gets you all kinds of special ride opportunities,
so check their Website (www.strawberrycapital.com) for more, but
you can just show up and you are sure to get all the info you need
right there.
To go with the carnival, theyve planned a rodeo for Friday and
Saturday nights along with some fun and special gospel and
country music line-ups. Theyre keeping some of it a secret, but rest
assured that the entire family can attend and you wont have to
put your hands over your childrens ears.
The recipe contest is moved up for 2014 with May 9 being the big
day for something strawberry special at the Stilwell Library, which
happens to be one of our fave places in Stilwell. The judging
starts at 5:30 pm. Get your entry forms on the website and come
ready for bragging rights (or bring a fork and taste test for
yourself).
May 10 is the big day: it starts at 7:30 am with the Run for the
Berries, a 5K beginning at 1113 N. Second St. and ending at the
Bandstand. If you want to participate, the first 450 runners get a
t-shirt whether you make the finish line or not, so do your best but
get a tee for trying. Find out more about the run by calling Charlie
Stilwell at (918) 696-8875 or Tresa Eagle at (918) 797-2713.
After the run, there will be a parade at 10 am on Second Street.
To go with the carnival, they also planned a car and motorcycle
show, a poker run and a tractor show! It just keeps getting better
and better. The car show and poker run is on Third Street and
Division and the Tractor show is on First Street. Also worth noting
is that the horseshoe tourney starts at 10 am also, so get to
practicing now so you can win.
At 2 pm, you get to bid on some berries to take home and make
your own concoctions. You can also find out where some of the
growers are on the Website so if you walk away empty-handed,
dont pout, you can come back for more later.
The grand finale to the day (and its free!) is the strawberries
and ice cream they whip out at 3 pm. Follow the long lines
to see where the free is because folks come from all
over for those berries and ice cream. Its something
about those berries that makes them special; they
are the best - one bite and youll agree.
Stick around for the evening festivities because they
will keep it coming with another rodeo and a concert
with great music acts highlighted by country music star
Kinsey Sadler. And its free, so why not attend? Get some
dinner in town or at one of the vendor booths, then check
out their special line-up for an evening of FREE fun.

Hey Cherokee County: We were blown away by all you had

happening in April: with the new and old alike all bringing in the
folks from all over Green Country, we couldnt be more impressed.
Now, for May, theres still plenty to excite you, so hang on tight,
here we go
Before we tell you any more, be alerted that Tahlequah Farmers
Market starts its season May 3, 8 am noon in Norris Park and
even if other events are happening this season, the Farmers
Market still goes on, so play a while then grab some fresh fruits,
veggies and more before you head home.

Home at 19479 E. Murrell Road in Park Hill. There is plenty of

Pack a lunch and enjoy a day of relaxation at one of the last
antebellum plantations in Oklahoma, but be sure to take a tour
while you are there, even if youve taken tours in years past. May
2 is Education Day and with about a dozen activities, it makes for
a great day of learning. Plan now for the big day. Get more at
www.okhistory.com/murrellhome or call Amanda at (918) 4562751.

Now if you missed the Red Fern Festival in April, you are lucky
that the Trail of Tears Art Show is continuing until May 25, but
dont put it off until the last few days because the place will
be packed. Its so much better if you have the space to spread
out and enjoy yourself. Authentic works of art done by local
artists await you at this once-a-year special event. Its truly eye
candy everywhere you look. Get more by checking out www.

Creek County: belly dancing, hot

rods, and grapes
by: Deb Bayton

There are some places where you just cant believe that they can
make a variety of events work together to make a stew of good
times, but Creek County has just what you need to make May
tasty. Read on and see what we mean

Oklahoma is populated with people from many ethnic

backgrounds, one of which is Lebanese, and in celebration of
that particular heritage of more than 100 years, Bristow kicks
off their annual Tabouleh Festival on May 10. With traditional
Middle-Eastern family recipes of the salad dish made with bulgur
wheat, fresh veggies, parsley, mint, olive oil and lemon juice, it is a
wonderful opportunity to taste international cuisine. The MiddleEastern flavor will also run through the highlights of the day with
other traditional foods, music - and dont forget the belly dancing.
There will be carnival rides, a rodeo, a play area for children,
and the day kicks off with the annual Wildflower Run, a premier
5K run, considered to be one of the best in the state. The festival
also hosts the Miss Tabouleh Pageant, and the stage will be hopping with plenty of entertainment. For more information call (918)

Nuyaka Creek Winery Spring Wine
Festival May 17, 35230 S. 177th
West Ave., Bristow: Bristow will lure you
in with a chance to sample a more recent
addition to Oklahomas home grown
industries. No need to go to France or
Italy to find a delicious selection of wine,
just take a quick drive out into the
country and visit the lovely Nuyaka
Creek Winery. Maybe bring some

leftover Tabouleh with you for a special dish.

Purchase a wineglass and then take a slow stroll through the
festival and sample more than a dozen different wines. Bring
lawn chairs, the family, your pets and your sunglasses, and relax
while sipping a glass of wine while you listen to some great entertainment. There will be many local vendors and wonderful items to
purchase. Dont miss a day outdoors in the fresh air!

Route 66 Blowout June 7, Downtown Sapulpa: We all love
Main Street in any town, the wonderful architecture of their historic buildings, small shops with their delightful front store windows, reminiscent of a time in America when life was so good. You
can almost imagine 57 Chevys and old Buicks cruising along the
paved roads.
Sapulpas annual Route 66 Blowout Car Show and Festival is
where classic cars, hot rods, motorcycles and trucks rev up to celebrate the Mother Road with an amazing variety of vintage and
modern cars and trucks competing against one another for great
prizes. Browse the juried art show and sale, join a walking tour of

Nowata new and old stuff is ready

to roll
by: Trent McDaniel

We know Nowata is a quiet town where the farmers go for a

break to grab a coffee and a burger while they stock up on
feed and catch up on the goins-on around town, but that doesnt
mean theres nothing to do. As a matter of fact, Nowata has stuff
that every so often you just cant miss. It appears that something
coming up on June 6-7 is one of those kinds of events. The Summer
City Wide Garage Sale is what we are talking about.
If you are a big fan of yard/garage sales, it might be to your
benefit to go where the whole town is cleaning out and selling
their goods at rock-bottom prices. Weve heard through the

Page 16 - May 2014 - The Pulse

grapevine that Nowatas city-wide is a pretty big deal that draws

folks from far away, if the license plates are any indication of all
they have to offer. If you are always in search of goodies from
the yard sales, then you need to clear off your calendar for June
6 and/or 7 and get up to Nowata and see what youve missed
in years past. They have plenty of places to grab a bite to keep
you nourished while you trudge through town gathering up the
goods and Nowata is a pretty place to visit anytime, so check
it out. Find out more by calling the Nowata Chamber at (918)

Catch a bit of Craig in May

CRAIG COUNTY

We sometimes have very little to tell you about goings-on in Craig

County but then, in months like this one, there doesnt seem to be
enough room to fit all that Craig County has to tell you about. Its
not that there are many events, but the ones that are happening
are so big, some are national in scope, so itd be a shame for you
skip them.

First, if you are a golfer, you might want to dig out the irons
and head over to Peoria Ridge where the VACC Golf Tourney is
slated for May 9, but dont wait around to show up, call the Vinita
Chamber NOW and place your name on the list because this is a
big event where serious golfers play. If you just want to slap some
balls around, go play putt-putt, but if a score under 70 is what all
your fantasies consist of, give them a call yesterday at (918) 2567133 to hold your spot. They just might be able to fit you in.

your weekend all the more special? The Grand Lake BBQ Festival
May 16-17 at Langley Ball Fields at 202 S. Park Street sounds
like some yum to me! Check out all they have to offer because it
goes way past food. Bring your ball glove for some softball on
Saturday. (918) 261-5422/www.grandlakebbq.com
It quiets down for a few until June 6-7 when the Big Cabin
Crafts Showcase Days makes an appearance at 31209 US 69
in Big Cabin. With the crafts, live music, demonstrations and
plenty to buy, it makes for a great day or two. Think affordable
gifts for all the holidays happening this year. By the way, its
free to attend and just a skip off I-44. (918) 244-8838/www.
bigcabincraftsfestivals.com
Stay with us all summer because you know Craig County will be
getting into all kinds of mischief and well be all the happier for it.

Ready to rock your stomach? How about a bit of BBQ to make

Delaware
Delaware doins for May

We cant wait to see what Delaware brings to the table for May,
but we are even more stoked for June through August because
thats the lake season in these parts and we all know Grove and
Jay are the hub of summer activities.

Best part is that Janna Jae will be there, fiddle in hand. If youve
never heard her before, we wonder where youve been, but
that means you cant miss it. She is awesome! Get more at www.
grandlakefestivals.com or call (918) 786-8896.

We told you about the April events, but May looks pretty tame.
There are some things for you to do and one that might entice the
motorists is the 7th Annual Car Show at Bears Den Resort on Hwy
59 on May 18, 8 am 12:30 pm. Entrance fees are only $15/
car but awards are great: 50/50 pot drawing, dash plaques,
trophies and more along with concessions make it a nice day of
fun. Contact Gene Hood at (918) 801-6489 for more.

Bernice Nature Center welcomes warmer weather with Memorial

Day Weekend Summer Kick-off May 24-26 at Bernice Nature
Center. Grab the kids and get out for a Memorial Day Weekend
worth remembering. Call (918) 257-8330 for more.

Delaware makes up for it in spades in June with the American

Heritage Music Festival at the Grove Civic Center (at1720 S.
Main Street in Grove) and Sniders Camp June 5-7. As anyone
who knows who Janna Jae is, this is a pretty big deal with
fiddlers, cloggers, camping and prizes for all kinds of categories.
As a matter of fact, they have an anything goes hot fiddle
competition, so if you think you got some skill, get to practicing.
With plenty of down-home cooking and the air-conditioned space
of the Grove Civic Center in case it gets too warm outdoors, this
is a great opportunity to get your music on while you stay cool.

Serious Pawnee play for May

There are plenty of good things to do in Pawnee in May. Best part
of all is that everyone is welcome: grab Gramps and the little
tykes because its all about everyone
Held on 80 acres of land
in Pawnee County at the
Steam Engine Park, crowds
are expected to come
out for the 48th annual
year in what has been
touted as the oldest and
largest show of this type
in Oklahoma: the Pawnee
Steam Threshing and Gas
Engine Show on May 2-4.
Last year, nearly 1,500 attended to view the historical show and
more are expected for 2014.
Its not just the motorized fun: there will be live entertainment as
well as some fresh from the farm goodies to nosh. Where can one

find some mouth-watering home-made Amish ice cream and fresh

corn straight from the field? A variety of food vendors will be on
hand to sample many delights. Come hungry.
A flea market and swap meet will be held on one portion of the
field and arts and crafts vendors will sell their creative expressions
at another area. In fact, the grounds are so large, shuttles will
take those from one event to another.

Osage County makes music and

moves in May
by: Loraine Latimer

Editors Note: We have put Woolaroc in Osage and Washington

Counties where we felt it appropriate. As it resides in both
counties, this month, we decided to place their events in Osage.
Hope no one is inconvenienced.

Woolaroc is serious about spring and they planned something for

the equestrians with their Spring Trail Ride May 10. A 15 mile ride
of scenic trail rarely seen by visitors awaits. Youll need current
Coggins papers, sunscreen, bug spray, water and a camera but
Woolaroc has your lunch planned. Its a perfect day of fun in the
saddle away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Get your info
from www.woolaroc.org or call (918) 336-0307.
Woolaroc opens its doors officially on May 26 with their summer
schedule starting. They will be open Tuesday-Sunday with many
fun special events happening, so keep an eye on The Pulse and on
www.woolaroc.org for all the particulars. Call the Ranch at (918)
336-0307 if you have a special request or question. There are,
however, other things to do at Woolaroc until they make summer
official. The Woolaroc Spring Trail Ride happens on May 10 and
its a perfect way to welcome warmer times. Get your Coggins
papers, pack extras for your comfort and make it a special day.
They are feeding lunch, so you wont need much. www.woolaroc.
org gets you more.
Woolaroc makes it official on May 26 with their big opening,
but they have more on May 30-31 with the 2014 Pursuit into the
Osage Nation where you can pit your shooting skills against the
other cowpokes that wanna compete. They are keeping it old
school, so no need to worry that you dont know the new rules. Go
to their Website for entry info.
Well have info on what Woolaroc is winding up with in June and
all summer long, so keep it here for more.

Skiatook is stepping up their game and let this be a good lesson

to all the other towns that are doing less to get folks to get out.
You cant get folks to come to your town if you dont do anything
to excite them. Skiatook knows that and has chosen to take the
high road with lots for your summer of fun.
If youve never experienced the thrill of Oklahomas Land Rush,
there are only a few places where you get the opportunity to
relive the experience and Skiatook takes you back with Oklahoma
Wagons Ho -May 9-11 at 394756 W 3900 Road. Team roping,
wagon races, a pony express, a cross-country cowboy race and a
wagon hitching contest are just the start. Top it all off with cowboy
storytelling and cowboy church services on Sunday morning, but
rest assured, this is what Okie tradition is all about. Come be a
part of it if you consider yourself a true Oklahoman. Get more at

Okmulgee

Big changes for Okmulgee in 2014

We started out with big plans to write a nice long list of things
to entice and excite you in Okmulgee for May and June, but it
appears that the guy at Dripping Spring and Okmulgee State
Parks who hosted all those wonderful fishing events decided to
retire last year, so they are discontinued for a while. We hope
that someone out there will want to pick up the reins and keep the
tradition going. If you are interested, we want to hear from you!
Just because the fishing tourneys and events are cancelled, that
doesnt mean that theyve closed the parks. Be sure to enjoy all
the beauty that these parks have to offer before our government
shuts them down. Be sure to take your trash with you when you
leave too please!

We looked for info on the McSpadden Arrington All Indian

Rodeo in Henryetta at the Jim Shoulders Rodeo Arena but came
up empty. As we are big fans of all the things that are strictly
Oklahoma, it was a bit of a bummer to not find anything. Same
thing goes for the Jim Shoulders Spring Round Up Rodeo in late
May/early June. (918) 652-3331/www.henryetta.org might net
you more info.
Stick with us all summer long, because we have high hopes that
Okmulgee County is just warming up the fun. If you know of
anything happening in Okmulgee County, please contact us at
(918) 931-9981. Happy Summer!

While you are in the area, why not give the big-hearted folks
in Barnsdall a shot? Apparently they are so big-hearted, they

crafts, vendors, live music and a parade. This is days of big fun for
all the big hearted people and you know who you are. Top it all
off with a car and tractor show, a Christian Music Talent Contest,
tricycle race, basketball shooting contest, hula-hoop competition,
sack races and the list goes on and on. Their big events are
the turtle races and frog jumping contest. The best part is the

ROGERS COUNTY

Rogers County: destination for

greatness
by: Amy Addams

Rogers County has always been a bit of a mystery for us in terms

of which cities and towns we can cover, so we are apologizing to
Catoosa and Collinsville that we have been putting both of these
towns in Tulsa County in the past. We will be covering Collinsville
in Rogers County and Catoosa in Tulsa; we hope it doesnt confuse
anyone.

While you are in Claremore, check out Will Rogers Downs, where
the Kentucky Derby will be televised all over the place on May 3
and hats of all varieties are welcome: the wilder and crazier the
hat, the better. They will have prime seating available, breakfast
for the early birds and plenty of goodie giveaways. Get more by
calling (918) 283-8800. WRD is located on Hwy 20 three miles
east of Claremore.
Get out your special duds because one of the best places for a
good ol fashioned nosh can be had at Will Rogers Downs where
they play host to Boots and BBQ May 9-10; 50-60 of the top
BBQ-ers show to put their best BBQ forth to win top honors. There
will also be arts and crafts, kids activities, a Route 66 car show,
and of course, horse racing and live music to entertain you. Get all
you need to know before you go at www.claremorereveille.com or
by calling (918) 343-8118.

Are you a bit of a competitor? Do you want to pit your feats of

strength against other competitors? Then Rogers County has a
couple events just for you. The first is the Steel Challenge Match
at US Shooting Academy in Tulsa on May 4 where shooters are
Targeting the prize. More at (918) 341-5707. Its $35 to be a
part of it.

Page 24 - May 2014 - The Pulse

The second event is the Warrior Dash at Moores Flying M Ranch

in Inola on May 17. You gotta pre-register but its worth the
paperwork. Follow that up with turkey legs, beer stains and
live music to party down after you sweat it up. More at www.
warriordash.com.
We couldnt leave Rogers County without covering two great parts
of Rogers that are keys to the County: Will Rogers and rodeos,
and ironically, both of these great parts of Rogers history are
honored with the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo May 2325 (Memorial Day Weekend) at Will Rogers Stampede Arena in
Claremore. Bull riding, steer wrestling, bareback riding, saddle
bronc riding, barrel racing, team roping, muttin bustin, rodeo
clowns and a dance follow the nightly performance. Vendors will
be on-site to sell Western wear and goods to the crowds. Pick
up a cowboy hat and secure a spot in the stands and prepare
to be amazed. Get all you need to know to want to go at
wwwwillrogersstampede.com or by calling (918) 740-8601.
Dont forget about the 4th Annual American Cowboy Trader Days
May 22-24, and if you are headed to the Rodeo, make a stop
at Traders Days since you are in the neighborhood and need
something new for your cowboy/ranch lifestyle (or even if you just
want everyone to think you are). Happens 8 am-5 pm each day
and they are offering stagecoach rides, plenty of memorabilia,
cowboy church with free breakfast and more. More at www.
willrogers.com.
Ready for something extra? How about old new stuff? Do you
hanker for the hankies of days gone by? The Ruffles & Rust Expo
on May 24 will give you something to crow about and we are
pretty excited for the new, I mean old. The newest trends in
shabby chic are supposedly there, so see whats up. They will also
have things to keep the kiddies entertained, so take em with you.
(806) 231-9822 or www.rufflesandrustexpo.com

Stick around for June is junpin in Rogers: the Battle of the Big Cats
is coming back and well have lots to say about THAT! Hang in
there with all the special May has to offer in the meantime.

that too. (918) 272-2141
Rooster Days Rodeo: The same weekend (May 9-11), the Roosters get their fair share with a rodeo (on horses, not roosters!) to go
with all Rooster Days has to offer attendees. Carnival rides, games, food and more. (918) 317-3200
Boots N BBQ: Okay, so Boots and BBQ isnt quite rodeo, but it is horse racing, so why not? Hey, you could make a buck or two at
the betting window. Cant say that about a rodeo, now can you? Check it out May 9-10 at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore. (918) 3438118
Schools Out for Summer BBQ & Market on Main: Celebrate the end of the school year in Skiatook with Schools Out Summer BBQ
where a rodeo is part of the party. This is the end of the day on May 17, so check it out. (918) 221-1845
Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo: We cant talk about at least one rodeo with the biggest names in Oklahoma, Will Rogers
being tied to it somehow and the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo May 23-25 in Claremore hits all the marks. Kids competitions,
western wear and rodeo clowns are only the beginning. (918) 341-8699
For rodeos no matter what art of the state you are in or when youll be there, check out www.travelok.com for a complete listing.

Powwow Page
Along with the rodeos, the local Powwows are ramping up for summer, but theres more than dancing. Many of the
local tribes are also celebrating the arts, heritage and beauty that they are all notorious for.

We have to remind you that the Trail of Tears Art Show goes on all May long, but as we all know, the last few days of anything
long-running will be the most congested. Make it a point to see what the local Native artists have been working on all winter but it all
ends for another year on May 25. (918) 456-6007/www.cherokeeheritage.org
The Restoring Harmony Powwow makes a one-day only appearance at the Westside YMCA in Tulsa on May 3. More on our Tulsa
pages, but the bigger theme is tolerance and pitting an end to bullying. Free to attend too. (918) 382-2217
While we couldnt call it a powwow per se, the Cherokee Heritage Gospel Sing on May 17 is the perfect place for anyone who
likes gospel or who just likes good music performed by talented artists. They are offering a free hog fry as a part of the festivities.
Attach your visit to the Trail of Tears Art Show and its a day made in Heaven. (918) 456-6007/www.cherokeeheritage.org
Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival/Parade will be in OKC June 5-7, and while it might seem like a bit of a drive, with over
100 tribes and 30,000 visitors that includes so much visual buts, you wont want to leave empty-handed. Be sure to see the dancing
because that is a special sight to behold. (405) 427-5228/www.redearth.org
Miami Nation Powwow, at the NEO College Arena June 6-7, makes for some of the most beautiful dancing competitions, but theres
so much more than dancing; its food, merchandise and singing, but thats only the introduction. See what more for yourself. (918) 5421445/www.miamination.com
Stick around for more Native American fun, Arts on the Avenue and plenty of inter-tribal excitement in June. Well have it all here.

GOING OUT - MOVIES

Disney brings us the untold story of its most iconic villain from
the classic Sleeping Beauty and the elements of her betrayal
that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge
and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides,
Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) cruelly places an irrevocable curse
upon the human kings
newborn infant Aurora.
As the child grows,
Aurora (Elle Fanning)
is caught in the middle
of the seething conflict
between the forest
kingdom she has grown
to love and the human
kingdom that holds
her legacy. Maleficent
realizes that Aurora
may hold the key to
peace in the land and
is forced to take drastic
actions that will change
both worlds forever.
Also starring Miranda
Richardson, Imelda
Staunton, Juno Temple
and Leslie Manville
this will be one for the
whole family to see.

The Pulse 2014 Guide to

As we did last year, we are once again giving our readers
information on what the local lakes in Green Country have
to offer. If you saw this last year, we apologize, but since
we had so many requests for this story to be offered for the
folks coming from elsewhere, we finally decided to cave.
A longer version of this information can be found at www.
mypulsemag.com, but we hope you can at least get the
basics here.

LAKES GUIDE

Lake Eufaula: with all that shoreline, you just know theres
a place youll find destined to meet your needs and LE
has it. From Noodlin to boat rentals to skis to power sails,
theres plenty of water sports equipment as well as places
to spend your evenings in Eufaula. With lodging options
from roughing it all the way to luxury waterfront cabins,
you cant complain that they wont have something to suit
you. This lake is so big and popular, it has its own Website:
www.lakeeufaula.com where you can find places to stay,
eat, and be entertained as well as whats happening on
any given weekend and they have all of the data on their
rules for a worry-free getaway, including the regulations
on fishing and hunting as well as a listing on the local
churches so you can keep your soul clean while away
from town. Heck, they can even tell you how far away you
are from them when you click the Eufaula button. How
convenient is that?
Call (918) 484-5135 for information on the lake or check in
with the Eufaula Chamber (located at 321 N. Main St.) at

www.eufaulachamberofcommerce.com or call them at (918)

689-2791.
Fort Gibson Lake: Some of the most coveted real estate in
these parts rests along Fort Gibson Lake and one visit will
tell you why. All of the homes are nestled in amongst the
trees, making them almost invisible from the waters edge,
yet every view is spectacular, no matter where you are.
With almost 20,000 acres of water space, FG Lake is truly a
site to behold and with its proximity to many of our little
towns as well as Muskogee, its a favorite for many. What
many covet is a residence along the lake; one look and
youll know why.
Marinas and campgrounds are plentiful along the shores of
Fort Gibson Lake. Taylor Ferry, Long Bay, Paradise Cove
and Whitehorn Cove are all big marinas with plenty of
signage to get you there. Get more at www.fortgibsonlake.
com.
Grand Lake: When they named it Grand, they werent
playing around. Grand Lake is really spectacular, but
its more than just a lake. Many claim that the amenities
around the lake make this a destination to come back to
even in the off season. Officially, its named Grand Lake
of the Cherokees but they have been kind enough to
share it with everyone. With all there is to see and do, you
may never even make it to the waters edge, but we hope
you do. They have big cabins that can sleep 25 people
(and more) or you can rent a romantic little bungalow
for just the two of you. Even if you like the outdoors
camping thing, they have you covered. With RV hook-ups,
wilderness campsites or even a hotel room for just a night
of away from the everyday, youll figure out something
that works for you. Grove, Afton, Langley and Monkey
Island are all great places for a bite to eat, stock up your
fishing supplies and get some sunscreen as well as pick out
a new swimsuit or perhaps a new pair of sunglasses or flipflops while you are there.
Get more details on all that is Grand about Grand Lake
in a multitude of places: www.grandlakefun.com, www.
grandlake.com, www.grandlakechamber.org, www.
grandlakeoklahoma.com and www.360grandlake.com have
plenty of lists to get you on your way as well as links to
more information. You can also call 1-866-LUV-GRAND for
more.
Lake Hudson/Markham Ferry: not too far from Salina,
Tahlequah, Jay, Pryor, Route 412 and I-44, Lake Hudson is
one in the chain of Grand Lake lakes. They are notorious
for fishing tournaments and they hold them all year round.
Their biggest draw comes from the abundance of bass but
they also offer crappie, catfish and perch. There are plenty
of places nestled out of the way of the main thoroughfare
so you can get away from other tourists and throw out
a line or just spend your day watching clouds drift by,
but you might want to try your skill at water skiing or
any of the other water sports available on the lake. Lake
Hudson offers plenty of places to camp, whether you

brought a pop-up tent or an RV and they also have plenty
of playgrounds for kids to be entertained as well. Call (918)
338-4103 or logon to www.grandlakelinks.com and search
for Lake Hudson.

Keystone Lake: Another getaway lake where you can

bring the family for some good fishing or just spend a
romantic weekend for two can be found along the shores at
Keystone off Highways 412/51. Keystone Lake resides in
four counties: Pawnee, Osage, Tulsa and Creek and is fed
by the Arkansas and Cimarron Rivers. Keystone has lots of
hiking trails, fishing, swimming, and boating opportunities
as well as camping sites. The fishing is pretty spectacular
at Keystone with striped bass, sand bass, black bass,
small mouth bass, crappie and catfish along with plenty
of animals during hunting season. Get more on Keystone
Lake at www.outdoorsok.com/Oklahoma/Keystone or call
(918) 865-2621.
Oolagah Lake: Boasting 209 miles of shoreline, Oolagah
Lake is a fishermans paradise but so much more. There are
11 parks around the lake along with a whole slew of fish to
be caught, including crappie, three kinds of bass, walleye
and catfish, but you can also enjoy sailing, horseback
riding, hiking and swimming. Located 30 miles NE of
Tulsa, you can make a day trip of Oolagah and return by
nightfall feeling refreshed and revived.
In case you were wondering, the name Oolagah means
Dark Cloud. Even more interesting is that Will Rogers
was born at Dog Iron Ranch which is now inundated
by Oolagah Lake. His home was relocated to a hill
overlooking the lake so the story is not so sad. If you want
to know more about Oolagah Lake, a fun Website we found
has some good info (but we dont know if its official), is
located at www.oolagah.com or call (918) 443-2250.
Skiatook Lake: Located right near Skiatook and one hour
from Tulsa, Skiatook Lake has plenty of hiking, boating,
swimming, camping, fishing, as well as picnic and camping
spots. There are many ramps/launches at Bull Creek,
Crystal Bay, Hominy Landing, Tall Chief Cove and Twin
Points. Most of the marinas have camping, picnic areas and
restaurants/dining spots, so no matter where you go, all

Lake Tenkiller: While not the biggest lake in our area,

many visit Lake Tenkiller religiously because of its quiet
splendor and good fishing along with enough amenities to
keep them coming back but not so many to be like another
city. There are some golf courses that have been part of the
PGA Tour in years past, so if you are headed to Tenkiller,
dont leave the clubs at home this year. Find out more
about Lake Tenkiller at (918) 487-5252.
Webbers Falls Reservoir: Just east/southeast of Muskogee
is Webbers Falls Reservoir where one of Oklahomas state
parks is always planning something for your fun, Greenleaf
State Park is worth the visit even if lakes arent quite your
thing. They seem to be drumming up fun despite the
budget issues and we commend them for their dedication
to making Oklahoma a fun place to be and visit. WFR has
boat docks and ramps, swimming, camping (tent and RV)
fishing, picnic areas, restrooms and hunting in season. Get
more by calling (918) 775-4475.

LAKES GUIDE

Robert S. Kerr Lake & Reservoir: While not one of the

busier destinations for a lake getaway, RSK has the
opportunity for a great place to really getaway and
mean it. Far from the white noise of city life (located just
a bit away from Sallisaw), take a cooler of sandwiches, a
pitcher of sweet tea and some bait and youve got a day
to really regroup. Plenty of camp sites with showers, boat
ramps, picnic areas and beaches make RSK the quiet mans
destination. If you are looking to do a little less talking and
a little more connecting with your inner mountain man,
this is it. RSK is notorious for the fishing opportunities,
especially as an Oklahoma Striper hotspot. There are
plenty of places to dock and launch boats, have a picnic,
playgrounds, restrooms, facilities and grocery grabs. Call

We asked you what your favorite jaunts were for BBQ, and as in years past, we got some good ideas for good food. Believe it or not,
there are not as many great BBQ stops as one might think.

Folks dont all know that Go Ye Village on the west side of
Tahlequah has great eats any day of the week and their prices
aint bad either. Best part of your visit might just be the fun and
enlightened folks who gather to eat there multiple times per
week, so its a win-win no matter how you look at it. You wont see
break dancing, but your and your kiddies could learn a lot from
folks whove been there and done that (and they did it all without
todays technologies). BBQ is served Tuesdays, 5-7 pm, but weve
never had a bad meal there, so fret not, just eat. And get some
enlightenment from the folks living there.

As we have recommended before, we say with Albert Gs, get

tomorrow. Albert Gs has some sides, but the meat is where its at,
so we highly recommend that if you are a sides kind of person,
maybe get your meats at Albert Gs and go elsewhere for your
fries/potatoes.
Albert Gs has plenty of meat options: by the pound, sandwiches,
dinners, a la carte, but they have quite the following. They slow
cook their meat over hickory logs and if you are willing to forego
the sides, you may want to save those calories for the desserts
because the dessert selection, while not a big one, is pretty great:
try the key lime pie or banana pudding since you didnt have fries
or onion rings. Youve earned it.

Macs got plenty of sizes for the meat eater from to to

really focus on the meat, so if
your inner carnivorous caveman
needs to be set free, leave the
vegetarians at home when you

few sides, but we are sure they
make no apologies for it. Beans,
potato or pasta salad, baked or
campfire potatoes or corn are the
choices for sides, but you get a half page of meats to pick from
and they have something called The Big Rib that looks impressive,
so if you order it, wed love to know what you think. If you are
expecting a crowd, Macs can make your gathering easier with
all kinds of pans of food for $19 for a small (serves 15-20) or
a large for $38 (serves 50-60), which sounds pretty good to us.
They also have a BBQ Frito pie that looks like heartburn in a bowl
but smelled pretty dang awesome and looked good to boot.

in the onions and garlic. Cook and stir the meat mixture until the
onions are translucent, about 10 more minutes.
2. Stir in water, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, soy sauce, Italian
seasoning, bay leaves, and seasoned salt, and bring the mixture
to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and
simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Stir in the macaroni, cover, and simmer over low heat until the
pasta is tender, about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove
from heat, discard bay leaves, and serve.

Gotta think about Cinco de Mayo!

1. In a medium skillet, cook the ground beef until browned over

medium heat. Drain, and set aside.
2. Place the ground beef, onion, chili beans, kidney beans, corn,
tomato sauce, water, diced tomatoes, green chili peppers and
taco seasoning mix in a slow cooker. Mix to blend, and cook on
Low setting for 8 hours.

Make your own Mexican Tortillas (1 dozen)

3 cupsall-purpose flour
2 teaspoonsbaking powder
2 teaspoonssalt
3/4 cupshortening
3/4 cuphot water
1. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Either by hand or
with a pastry cutter, cut in the shortening till the mixture is crumbly.
If the mixture looks more floury than crumbly, be sure to add just
one or two more tablespoons of shortening till it is crumbly. Add
about 3/4 cup hot water to the mixture, or just enough to make
the ingredients look moist.
2. With your hand or a large fork, knead the mixture making
sure to rub the dough against the sides of the large mixing bowl
to gather any clinging dough. If the dough still sticks to the side of
the bowl, add a couple more tablespoons of flour until the dough
forms a soft round shape. The dough is ready to roll out now, but
it is best to let it rest. Cover it with a dish towel, and let it sit for
about an hour or so.
3. Take the dough, and pull it apart into 10 to 12 balls. Lightly
flour your rolling area, and roll each ball with a rolling pin to
about 1/8 inch thickness.
4. Place each tortilla on a medium hot cast iron skillet. Cook for
about 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until the tortilla does not
look doughy.

Sneak Peek Into Next Month

Coming next month:
We have soooo much to tell you about in June, but for now, well
just tell you that this June is one youll want to be a part of. It looks
like this is going to be a great time of year to be already part of
Green Country. Well have more, but for now, just know that some
of what well have for you are:
Music Festivals: Tallgrass, American Heritage, OK Mozart, and
much more for festy-ness: our fave music writer, Julie Watson, will
tell you all about it.
Well save you the chore or cleaning out the garage or closets by
finding you plenty lake and river action and well get you all the
dates and deets to make sure your calendar is full of things fun
for a great time.
June is the height of car season; Hot Rods & Heroes, poker runs by
the dozens and plenty of local and regional events worthy of a
new can of car wax make for a jumpin June of jalopy joy.
Well also have all the recipes, powwows, rodeos and the regular
stuff, so if weve missed anything, by all means, give us a shout
and well see what we can do! Until then, be kind to each other
and be good to yourself.
