PANEL 8 933kW COMPRESSOR MOTOR

5.1 THERMAL PROTECTION
Running motor (stator) as well as locked rotor hot and cold thermal damage curves have
been provided by the motor manufacturer, Siemens. Since there is a step change from the
running to the locked rotor curves (at a current of about 3.2p.u.), two sets of thermal curves
were decided upon in the !" utilising the #hermal Settings $ and #hermal Settings 2.
#hermal Settings $ will cater for the running condition and #hermal Settings 2 for the locked
rotor (stall protection). #he stall curves will have faster tripping times than the running motor
curves. #he time constants for the running and stall curves were chosen so that the curves lie
%ust under the respective damage curves with a sufficient margin of safety for motor starting.
