Woodside, Summit drive residents voice concerns
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Residents of Woodside Drive
and Summit Drive in Tabernacle
ensured their voice was heard
when Sgt. Michael Dittmar of the
New Jersey State Police attended
the township committees regular
meeting.
We have serious problems on
our side of town. We have heroin
bags on the street, Jennifer Her-
pen said.
The resident of Woodside
Drive joined several neighbors
from Summit Drive to speak out
about the illegal drug use, tres-
passing and speeding motor vehi-
cles through the Pinelands com-
munity.
Residents told officials that the
source of the problem stems from
property owners renting out
rooms.
What has to be done is the
township, somehow, needs to step
in to stop the renting of these
rooms as a flophouse, Bill Krei-
dler said. They advertise on
Craigslist. Its cheap, and these
kids, who are not from town or
the neighborhood, just show up
and rent a room. They speed
down the street. Theres activity
in the middle of the night, cars
being broken into and things
along that line.
The final straw came when
neighbors learned of recent drug
overdoses, including a fatal one in
the area.
All kids want to play outside,
and we have drug addicts traips-
ing through my backyard, Her-
pen said. If you dont push back,
theyre going to keep doing what
they do. And I dont think the
township was aware how bad it
was.
The State Police, which covers
the municipality, recently stepped
up patrols in the area, but
Dittmar said resources are limit-
ed and that residents need to let
them know when they see tres-
passers or any illegal activity.
I understand your frustra-
tions. I really do, Dittmar said.
He suggested that residents
erect no trespassing signs,
which could lead to the arrest of
violators.

Seneca to continue One
Book, One School program
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The school year may have just
ended, but the Lenape Regional
High School District is already
looking forward to 2014-15.
The district is bringing back its
One Book, One School program
for the sixth time next year. Each
school has been assigned a book
to read over summer break.
Director of Curriculum
Heather Xenakis said the pro-
gram has proven to be successful
in promoting school spirit and
unity. She said the students are
much more eager to read the
books than they would be with a
grade level-specific book.
In the past, each of the differ-
ent levels read different books,
Xenakis said. Now, the entire
faculty and students are asked to
read one book. It has been em-
braced by the school communi-
ties.
This summer, Seneca High
School will read Basketball 21
by Matthew Quick. The book is a
story about two high school bas-
ketball players who live in a run-
down town and overcome adversi-
ty in their own lives through a
new friendship.
Xenakis said the chosen books
have themes the teachers use in
their lessons throughout the
school year. These themes don't
just apply to literature classes.
Math and science classes are able
to apply the themes as well.
The biggest impact One Book,
One School has had on the
Lenape district community has
been the excitement generated
among students. Xenakis said the
students have organized contests
and events related to the book.
Some of the schools have aca-
demic pep rallies, Xenakis said.
Some of them have contests.
This type of excitement was
unable to be achieved prior to the
program's launch.
In addition to each grade read-
ing a different book, there were
multiple books assigned depend-
ing on the students level of Eng-
lish class.
Now each school chooses a
book all levels of readers from
freshmen to seniors are able to
comprehend.
More information on the pro-
gram or the books for the other
Lenape district high schools can
be found on www.lrhsd.org.

Facts are misleading in last
weeks letter to The Sun
In the letter to the editor: Tabernacle
Township Committees dissolution of fire
district not done correctly dated June 25,
many of the facts are misleading, con-
fusing or just plain wrong.
The resolution was not on the meeting
agenda, it was placed there 10 minutes
after the meeting started. Yes, the resolu-
tion was not on the agenda. The agenda
was published as usual on the Friday three
days before the meeting. The committee,
however, was waiting for information from
the state before deciding whether to pro-
ceed. The state didn't respond until Mon-
day afternoon. It was the very first thing
mentioned after the opening attendance
roll call not 10 minutes after the meeting
started. Though copies were not available
for the public at the meeting, the resolution
was read aloud by Deputy Mayor Stephen
Lee IV, a far cry from a resolution that no
one knows the details of.
The committee has not only voted to
dissolve the district, it has voted to take
away the last thing you get to vote on con-
cerning your tax dollars. Besides being
misleading, this statement completely ig-
nores currently pending legislation (2014-
2015 Assembly No. 2947, sponsored by As-
semblyman Ronald S. Dancer), which
would eliminate the public vote on fire dis-
trict budgets under the annual cap. The
Tabernacle Fire District has publicly en-
dorsed this and similar legislation in the
past. In other words, this is likely to have
happened even if the committee kept the
fire district.
Is this the first step to a paid fire de-
partment, a full-time public safety direc-
tor? This is totally unfounded. The com-
mittee has made it clear that it wants to
continue working with the volunteer fire

T
he U.S. Supreme Court last
week declined to rule on New
Jerseys fight against the feder-
al ban on sports gambling in all but
four states. To most, that would seem
like the final out, the last chance to
win has come and gone.
Gov. Christie, one of the biggest pro-
ponents of legalized sports gambling
in the state, responded that way when
asked about the decision. They said
no, so we have to move on, he said.
State Sen. Ray Lesniak, the champi-
on of the bill that attempted to over-
turn the federal ban, has other ideas,
though. Lesniak, in all his glory, has
no plans of dropping the fight.
While he is disappointed with the
Supreme Courts decision not to hear
New Jerseys case, he feels its not the
final blow to legalized sports gambling
in the state.
His solution unregulated sports
gambling. And he says judges for the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third
Circuit set the precedent for the legali-
ty of doing so in their decision last
September.
The federal law in question, the Pro-
fessional and Amateur Sports Protec-
tion Act of 1992, forbids states from ac-
tively encouraging sports gambling in
forms such as issuing licenses and
promoting the activity, in ways like
New Jersey does for its Atlantic City
casinos and racetracks across the
state. What the law doesnt do is say
that having no law prohibiting sports
gambling is unlawful.
Lesniak says the states of Washing-
ton and Colorado have set the prece-
dent for this type of unregulated activ-
ity. Federal law prohibits the manu-
facture and distribution of marijuana,
but they havent stepped in to stop Col-
orado and Washington from legalizing
it, according to Lesniak.
Hes right there, but thats quite the
slippery slope. With no regulation on
sports gambling, just imagine how
corrupt this could become. Weve all
seen movies such as Casino and doc-
umentaries on the subject is Lesni-
ak blind to the fact that it could hap-
pen all over again in New Jersey? At-
lantic City could become the Las
Vegas of the 1950s, and no one wants
that, not even for more tax revenue.
Will professional sports leagues say
they no longer allow franchises to be
located in New Jersey because of this
unregulation? What about the NCAA?
Will the New Jersey Devils and Rut-
gers University football not be sanc-
tioned anymore? It could happen.
Sometimes in life, one needs to real-
ize the fight is lost, that one has been
defeated. This is one of those cases,
Ray Lesniak. Let it be.
Its time to wave the white flag
We lost the sports gambling fight, so its time to give it a rest
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on the Supreme
Courts decision not to hear New Jerseys
fight for sports gambling, or Ray Lesniaks
continued push to legalize it?
please see LETTER, page 7
company, and the committee at
the June 9 meeting unanimously
rejected the idea of a public safe-
ty director. So the answer to this
is, flatly, no.
We already have an emer-
gency squad that bills you and
your insurance company for your
ride to the hospital, yet still re-
ceives its vehicles, gas, insurance
and building plus $70,000 from
our tax dollars.
What does this have to do with
the fire district? Regardless,
starting last year, if you are a res-
ident of Tabernacle, the rescue
squad will send a bill to your in-
surance company, but not send
you one.
If it does erroneously send you
a bill, the committee has made it
clear that you do not need to pay
it. Additionally, the $70,000 is due
to be reduced in upcoming years
as the actual long-term revenue
impact of the new billing struc-
ture becomes clear.
Earlier this year, the commit-
tee discussed the possibility of re-
ducing this amount sooner.
This idea was rejected, in large
part because of legal fees that are
being incurred by the rescue
squad due to the lawsuit brought
against it by resident Fran
Brooks.
Maybe its time to rethink
whom we elect to the committee.
In a democratic society, this ques-
tion should be constantly asked
by every citizen about every pub-
licly elected body.
If the author of this letter felt
this strongly, the author should
run for the township committee.
As I recall, committeewoman
Kim Brown was the only Republi-
can candidate running in the pri-
mary, with no Democrats run-
ning.
The author of the letter feels
like a Monday morning quarter-
back, misstating or misconstru-
ing facts in an attempt to impose
his or her own agenda on the rest
of the township.

The 22nd annual Kiki Konstan-
tinos Scholarship Golf Tourna-
ment is scheduled for Tuesday,
July 22 at Little Mill Country
Club in Marlton. Proceeds of the
event fund scholarships for out-
standing graduates of the Lenape
Regional High School District.
The Konstantinos Scholarship
Foundation was established in
1993 to honor former Lenape Re-
gional High School District Su-
perintendent, K. Kiki Konstanti-
nos who served in this position
for more than 30 years. Through
this yearly golf tournament, the
foundation raises money to con-
tinue Konstantinos work of fos-
tering excellence in education by
awarding individual scholarships
to outstanding students for high-
er education. Currently, 16 stu-
dents per year are awarded a
$2,000 scholarship, with a total of
$393,000 being awarded since the
establishment of the foundation.
The cost per player is $210,
which includes greens fee, cart,
lunch, prizes and an awards din-
ner. Registration begins at 11:30
a.m. The golf portion of the event
begins at 1 p.m. with a shotgun
start. For those who cannot golf
but would like to be a part of the
day, there are a wide range of
sponsorships available.
For more information call
Steve Zeuli at (856) 985-5172 or

formation is also available on the

PEASANT PRICES.
If we go after quality-of-life is-
sues and we can get them on
something silly, then now theyre
in the system, Dittmar said. If
they dont pay the fine, it becomes
a warrant.
And that gives us more reason
to go knocking on doors, the right
way, the legal way.
Mayor Joseph Barton said he
and the rest of the committee ap-
preciated the residents express-
ing their concerns and planned to
look into the matter. The govern-
ing body also will investigate how
the township can get more help
for troopers.
Residents suggested that offi-
cials also do something about the
rental properties.
We need something done,
maybe change an ordinance, in-
spect the houses or maybe some
code enforcement, Kreidler said.
Committee members agreed.
I think its a good time to
move forward on the rental prop-
erty ordinance, Deputy Mayor
Stephen Lee IV said. We have
some rental properties that are
contributing to the problem on
Summit Drive, and I think its our
responsibility.
Township Solicitor Peter
Lange said he would restart work
on a draft of the ordinance that
not only requires registration but
also an inspection of properties.
We need to get into the house,
not just register the house, actual-
ly get in and inspect the house,
Barton said, to ensure that rental
units are up to code.
