REACTION PAPER

Last February 28, 2014, the 2
nd
ECOSUMMIT , organized by The Economics Society, was held
at the LAP Hall. It was attended by most of the economics students, few of the economics
professors and of our 11
th
FEU President, Dr. Michael Alba who was also the guest speaker of
the said event.

Dr. Alba sang first by which made everyone burst into laughter. Well, I wasnt expecting that he
would do that, knowing the fact that he is superior. I am very much amazed that he handled his
introduction with a humorous one, which I think is somehow better because few of people would
realize that this event wouldnt bore them or make them sleepy, as well.

As he went from being humorous person to serious one, I believe that the purpose of his speech
was to persevere each and one of the economics students, on how they are different with other
courses and what opportunities they are going to get once they graduate.

He mentioned few definitions of the great Keynes, and only one I remembered which was
Economics is an easy subject where few excel. The way easy was being described is very
cool, or in Filipino, MALUPIT

He also mentioned that being an economics student must not only excel in Economics, but also
one must be good in Political Science, Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Differential and Integral
Calculus and insert harder subjects here. Economists must also be a good writer. Writing means
communication ideas precisely and clearly. Few words as possible are to be used. Economists
must be a good reader also, for one could enhance the way he comprehends his ideas precisely
and clearly.

Economics graduates have tough mind but soft heart. These are the words he told to the graduate
students by which I think inspired them more, because having a tough mind means he could
analyze precisely and having a soft heart means the compassion to fellowmen.

There are a lot more life lessons that everyone must hear. Even though those were intended only
to Economics students, I could also apply everything he has said to lead me into the right path.
He inspires me to study even more with my lessons because todays the age of self-directed
study and we, students, must not rely on the curriculum, instead we must practice thinking
outside the box, meaning, we must stop limiting ourselves into a greater and better opportunities
waiting outside the four corners.

In order to succeed, one must possess passion to his work and must set goals, may it be a short or
long term goal. Dr. Alba wasnt a person I was thinking of. He makes sense. Everything he said
makes sense to me.
