ANCIENT CHINA

By Daniel Nakai
SEPARATED FROM THE WORLD
China is a vast land made up of rivers, mountains,
deserts, and wonder.
Ancient China was closed off from the rest of the world
on all sides. It was difficult to get in and out of China
because on all sides you would find a natural land
formation that made it difficult to pass. Because China
was closed for many years, they were left to create
and prosper.
Today China has contributed so much to todays
civilization.
Follow along as we look at China and these
formations. Later in our field trip, we will see if you can
use Google Earth find China and these important
natural barriers.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE MAPS AND SEE IF
YOU CAN FIND THE FOLLOWING.
Use the world map to find Asia

ASIA

correct?

China is located on the South Eastern side of the
continent of Asia

The Himalayan Mountains run along the western and southern
side of China.

that would make it difficult to get through this Chinese barrier?
GOBI DESERT
On the north side of China lies the 5
th
largest desert in the world. The
Gobi Desert is one of the great deserts in the world. Lying to the north
of China, temperature ranges from 104 degrees to -40 degrees
Fahrenheit.
Look at the following site on the Gobi Desert.
What about this area would make it hard to live in it?
What about this area allows people and animals to live in it?
If you were looking to take over China, would you go through the Gobi Desert? Why
or Why not?
THE PACIFIC OCEAN
The Pacific Ocean lies to the Eastern side of China. They only
way to enter into China on this side would be by boat through the
Chinese Seas. During Ancient Chinese time. Traveling the open
sea was dangerous.

Being closed to the world
allowed the chinese to
prosper. Throughout their
prosperity they created some
amazing things that we still
benefit from today.

One of Chinas most famous
contributions is a tool we use
almost everyday.
Before paper, people were
forced to write on other
materials like wood, rocks,
and even silk.
CONTRIBUTIONS
Silk
One of Ancient Chinas best kept secrets was
the art of making Silk.
Silk was one of the finest material known to
man.
It was so special when it was invented, that only
royalty was allowed to wear it.
