Sea and land breezes occur in areas where land meets the sea. During the day, the sun
heats the surface of the land and the sea. Water absorbs a lot of the heat, so the air
over the sea is cooler than the air over the land. Warmer air over the land is light,
therefore it rises. This causes the air pressure over the land to be lower than that over
the sea.
Air always moves from an area high pressure to an area of low pressure. Therefore,
during the day the wind blows from the sea towards the land. This wind is called sea
breeze.
Sea breeze can cause the temperature on the shore to drop by ten degrees Celsius in
thirty minutes. Sea breeze in tropical areas are strong. ou can still feel it even if you
are si!ty "ilometres away from the beach. Sea breeze in temperate regions can reach
only about ten "ilometres inland.
At night, land cools faster than water. The air pressure is now higher over the land than
over the sea. So, the wind change direction. This is land breeze. #t is gentler and slower
