ENABLING THE TRANSITION
TO A MODERN, SUSTAINABLE
POWER SYSTEM
Electricity consumption will continue to grow rapidly all over the world during
the coming decades. At the same time, concerns related to global warming
and declining fossil fuel resources have created a need, supported by
political pressure, to reduce carbon emissions through renewable power. At
OUR VISION
6
present, renewable sources, hydropower excluded, cover a good 3% of total
production, but their share is rapidly growing.
Providing intermittency problems can be efciently resolved, wind or solar
based electricity ofers great potential. The variability of wind and solar power
creates new challenges to power systems which cannot be solved by any grid
solution. Even small variations in wind speed which can happen many times
per day within time frames of less than 15 minutes have a dramatic impact on
wind power output. In power systems with high shares of installed wind power
capacity, this is a challenge which the system is not designed to handle.
OUR VISION
7
The existing power systems need to be complemented by dispatchable,
dynamic capacity with the capability of handling frequent fast starts, stops
and load ramps. To ensure a sustainable, reliable and afordable power
system a dynamic capacity which corresponds to roughly half of the installed
intermittent power capacity is required.
BALANCING THE POWER SYSTEM
Wrtsils power plants enable transition to a modern, sustainable power
system. The main corner-stones are very high energy efciency, outstanding
operational exibility, and multi-fuel operation. For todays emerging low-
carbon power systems, they balance large input uctuations of wind and
solar power. They also provide high efciency base load, peak load, and
OUR VISION
8
load-following power, as well as super-fast grid reserves on a national power
system level.
Wrtsils technology and power plant solutions have been developed to
provide a unique combination of valuable features that enable new horizons for
future sustainable, reliable and afordable national power systems.
The applications range from stationary and oating baseload power plants
to dynamic grid stability and peak load services, as well as a wide variety of
industrial self-generation applications.
Reservoir hydropower, where available, and smart grids with demand
response, assist in the balancing task. When complementing the power
system with Wrtsils solutions, all system balancing challenges can be
solved, even with the maximised use of intermittent renewables.

MORE THAN 10 GOOD REASONS
Wrtsil power plants are designed for optimal performance in a wide
variety of power production applications, and provide fast and exible
capacity with multiple dynamic operation modes, from ultra-fast grid
reserve to efcient base load generation. These sustainable and afordable
power systems have the highest energy efciency, thus enabling cost
efective and secure power generation regardless of changes in pricing
and availability of fuels.

OPERATIONAL FLEXIBILITY
Being able to operate in multiple modes, from efcient baseload power
production to dynamic system balancing in combination with, for example,
wind or solar power, Wrtsil power plants become a key factor in optimising
power systems.
They ofer ultra fast, zero-emissions, non-spinning grid reserve for any
contingency situation or grid black start. They can generate megawatts to the
grid in 30 seconds from start-up and reach full load in two minutes. They are
designed to start and stop at the push of a button time after time without
impact on maintenance.
The multi-unit conguration allows plant availability and reliability of close
to 100%, as well as highest possible rm capacity. They also ensure rapid
load following and peak load capability with fast frequency regulation and an
efcient spinning reserve.
Wrtsils plants are also easy to locate next to critical load pockets, i.e. in
cities, thanks to plant size, and low emission and noise levels, and thus reduce
the grid investment cost notably. The infrastructural requirements are modest,
with little or no water consumption, and low pipeline gas pressure (5bar)
needed.
power plants
12
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Power plants based on multiple generating units are far more reliable and
fuel efcient than single or several large power stations. They also serve
efciently on part load and in demanding ambient conditions, enabling high
dispatch even in hot climates and at high altitudes.
We also ofer the highest available simple cycle energy efciency of current
technologies, 49% or more. With the Flexicycle solution the advantages
of a exible simple cycle plant are combined with the superb efciency of a
combined cycle plant.
FUEL FLEXIBILITY
Wrtsils multi-fuel plants enable the continuous choice of the most feasible
fuel, including solutions for liquid and gaseous fuels as well as renewables.
The possibilities gained from multi-fuel plants and fuel conversion solutions
represent a hedge for the future.
The role of natural gas in power generation is expected to grow
signicantly over the coming years. Recent technical breakthroughs and the
commercialisation of shale gas have resulted in a substantial extension of the
perceived depletion time of gas reserves, and have lowered the price of natural
gas. With power plants running on gas, the 20% renewable energy share
target set for 2020 by many nations is within reach.

WRTSIL 34 GASCUBE
A Wrtsil 34 GasCube plant consists of multiple of engine modules designed
to meet a total power need of 630 MW. A GasCube based on the Wrtsil
16V34SG or Wrtsil20V34SG, with all the auxiliaries and components
needed to make up a working power production unit, provides 710 MWe per
unit. Due to the self-contained design, the GasCube is the optimal solution for
agile, streamlined and exceptionally cost efcient project execution.

GAS GENSETS
Gensets based on the 34SG engines are normally transported as complete
units, i.e. with the engine and its generator readily mounted on a common
base frame. If required by the logistics of the project, the gensets can also be
delivered dismantled into blocks with only engines mounted and generators
shipped separately. If necessary, it is possible to deliver the gensets as three
separate main blocks: engine, generator and base frame.
Gensets based on the 18V50SG engine are normally delivered for separate
mounting of the engine and its generator. Hence, the genset is transported in
two blocks, engine mounted on its base frame and generator mounted on its
base frame, which allows a considerably reduced transportation weight.

MULTI-FUEL POWER PLANTS
The ability to switch to the most economical, or readiest available, fuel is
of great value at a time of uctuating fuel prices. Furthermore, fuels can
be switched while the engine is operating, for example if the gas supply is
interrupted. The ability to switch between fuels brings additional value at times
of uctuating fuel prices or unreliable fuel supply. Fuels can be switched freely
during operation.

MULTI-FUEL GENSETS
Gensets based on the 32GD and 34DF engines are normally transported as
complete units, i.e. with the engine and its generator readily mounted on a
common base frame. If required by the logistics of the project, the gensets
can also be delivered dismantled into blocks with only engines mounted and
generators shipped separately. If necessary, it is possible to deliver the gensets
as three separate main blocks: engine, generator and base frame.
Gensets based on the Wrtsil 46GD/50DF engines are normally
delivered for separate mounting of the engine and its generator. Hence, the
genset is transported in two blocks, engine mounted on its base frame and
generator mounted on its base frame, which allows a considerably reduced
transportation weight.

*** Excluding the HFO storage system
Plant electrical efciency excluding auxiliary system losses. Based on ISO3046 conditions and tolerances.
Based on the extremely agile and exible Wrtsil 32 engine, this solution is
developed for stand-by, emergency and peak load applications. The plant can
take and reject load extremely fast, day after day.
The heavy duty fuel injection system can handle extremely rough qualities
of HFO. The Ultra Fast start capability only requires a slightly higher preheating
temperature, cyclic slow turning to be performed and hydrostatic lubrication of
the generator.

51
LIQUID FUEL GENSETS
Gensets based on the 20, 32 and 32TS engines are normally transported as
complete units, i.e. with the engine and its generator readily mounted on a
common base frame. If required by the logistics of the project, the gensets
can also be delivered dismantled into blocks with only engines mounted and
generators shipped separately. If necessary, it is possible to deliver the gensets
as three separate main blocks: engine, generator and base frame.
Gensets based on the Wrtsil 46 engines are normally delivered for
separate mounting of the engine and its generator. Hence, the genset
is transported in two blocks, engine mounted on its base frame and
generator mounted on its base frame, which allows a considerably reduced
transportation weight.

FLEXICYCLE POWER PLANTS
The new Flexicycle solution combines the advantages of a exible simple
cycle plant with the superb efciency of a combined cycle plant, in a unique
way. Flexicycle power plants can be optimised for diferent outputs up to
600MW. The power plant solution is based on combustion engines and steam
turbine combined cycle production. Each engine is equipped with a waste heat
recovery steam generator. The power plant has one common steam turbine and
condenser. The power plant cooling is typically arranged so that the combustion
engines are cooled with closed loop radiators and the steam cycle with cooling
towers. When equipped with an air cooled condenser, our combined cycle plants
also have very low water consumption.
Two operation modes are ofered: dynamic and fast simple cycle, and highly
efcient combined cycle. Depending on the conguration, in simple cycle, the
efciency is up to 49%, and in combined cycle more than 53%.

POWER PLANT
power plants
Combining the exibility of combustion engines with the efciency of a
combined cycle gives the ultimate exible baseload solution.
The heavy duty fuel injection system can handle extremely rough qualities
of HFO.
The multi-fuel technology can shift between natural gas and any type of
liquid fuel, including HFO, on the run. Natural gas pressure of only 5 bar is
required.

COMBINED HEAT & POWER AND
TRIGENERATION POWER PLANTS
Wrtsils combined heat and power (CHP) plants incorporate both power and
heat generation. The system for heat generation, in parallel with the production
of electricity, steam, hot water, or chilled water, is optimally designed for the
customers specic needs and requirements. Total plant efciencies can rise to
90% and even higher. CHP plants can run on various fuels while maintaining low
emissions and high efciency. The heat recovery systems can be dened as post
engine hang-on types, and do not directly afect either engine performance or
running. The engine will give the same high electrical efciencies and output,
regardless of the rate of heat production. CHP plants run with signicantly less
fuel input than separate power and heat generation.
Wrtsils CHP solutions for district cooling and trigeneration are attractive
solutions for large facilities such as airports, shopping centres, housing areas,
and other building complexes with substantial heating and cooling demands.
Depending on the customers heating and/or cooling requirements, plant location,
and the seasonal variations in ambient conditions, the plant can be equipped with
standardised heat recovery and chiller solutions, with absorption chillers for heat
recovery and electrically driven chillers for covering the peak demands.

The high efciency of Wrtsils CHP and trigeneration plants translates
into considerable savings in fuel costs compared to other technologies. A
decentralized combined heat and power plant increases the reliability of energy
supply in the neighbourhood. Total energy production is local and close to the
point of consumption.
As demands change, the design of the plants makes it possible to increase
the plant size in stages by adding new engines. This also allows for a smaller
initial investment with the option to expand later as required.
TOWN CONCEPT
When the plant is situated in the middle of a city or an industrial plant site, the
layout is more compact and the protective shielding is stronger. The two-oor
plant layout represents a diferentiated approach, and the exterior of the plant
and the special architectural design of the power house allow it to integrate
seamlessly into its surroundings. The emission levels are kept very low with
efective emission reduction systems and special wall architecture and heavy
duty silencers are installed to eliminate any potential problems, keeping the
noise levels well inside the comfort limits even for the closest dwellers.

FIELD POWER GENERATION
Wrtsil power plants range to above 600 MW. Proven reliability, fuel exibility
and low emissions make the plants suitable for demanding applications in the
oil and gas industry.
Our power plants can be run on associated gas, crude oil, residual, diesel
oil or a combination of liquid and gaseous fuels. This enables the operator to
choose the fuel with the lowest price and best availability. The system is also
74
oil and gas industry SOLUtions
tolerant against fuel quality variations and is, therefore, highly suitable for
oileld power generation.
The modular design of our eld power plants enables trouble-free
installation and fast-track delivery anywhere in the world. Prefabricated,
functionally pretested modules guarantee consistent quality and performance.
Site installation is simply a matter of assembling and connecting the modules.
75
Wrtsil power plants are able to run on a wide selection of fuels, ranging from
natural gas to fuel-water emulsions.
Fuels such as crude oil, fuel-water emulsions, associated gas, liquid biofuel,
biogas and other fuels outside globally recognised standard fuel specications,
should be carefully analysed for each power plant project prior to use. Due to the
nature of these types of fuels their quality might vary over time, and consequently
fuel quality analyses should be carried out on a regular basis.
APPROVED GASEOUS FUELS AND
LIQUIFIED NATURAL GAS
Wrtsil power plants can be run on the following gases.
NATURAL GAS
Natural gas is the decayed remains of organic material (plants and animals)
which over time has turned to gas under the impact of pressure and heat. It
is a naturally occuring hydrocarbon gas mixture. Natural gas of commercial
pipeline quality consists of methane and is processed to meet guaranteed
specications for heating value, Wobbe index and cleanliness.
LIQUIFIED NATURAL GAS (LNG)
Liquied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been converted to liquid
form for easier transport and storage. LNG takes up about 1/600th of
the volume of natural gas in gaseous state. LNG is odourless, colorless, non-
toxic and non-corrosive.
ASSOCIATED GAS
Associated gas is a constituent that is separated from crude oil in oil eld
degassing equipment. The methane content is less than in natural gas, but
the concentration of heavier hydrocarbons is higher, thus normally producing a
high heating value. Gas-diesel engines are very suitable for burning associated
gas, either in normal gas-diesel mode or using the fuel sharing mode.
BIO GASES
Bio gases are the result of treating biological matter in digesters or through
other decomposing processes. The resulting gas consists of methane and
carbon dioxide.
FUEL flexibility
76
COAL BED NATURAL GAS
Coal bed natural gas is collected from underground coal layers. It contains
methane, water and carbon dioxide in varying concentrations. Unlike
natural gas from conventional reservoirs, coal bed gas contains less heavier
hydrocarbone such as propane or butane, and no natural gas condensate. It
often contains some carbon dioxide.
SHALE GAS
Shale gas is natural gas trapped in shale, ne-grained sedimentary rock
which consists of mineral akes, particularly quartz and calcite. Together with
coalbed methane and methane hydrates, shale gas is an
unconventional source of natural gas.

LIQUID FUELS
LIGHT FUEL OIL
Light fuel oils or diesel oils are high value distillates that have traditionally
been used to fuel diesel engine power plants, both for stand-by operation and
baseload applications. The use of light fuel oils in baseload applications has
decreased since it has become possible to use cheaper lower grade fuels.
There are, however, certain applications, such as backup power plants, and
installations on islands and in arctic conditions, where light fuel oil is still the
preferred alternative.
HEAVY FUEL OILS
Heavy fuel oils are blended products based on the residues from various
renery distillation and cracking processes. They are black viscous liquids
which require heating for storage and combustion. Heavy fuel oils are used for
diesel engines in power plant and marine applications.
CRUDE OIL
Crude oil is a highly complex mixture of hydrocarbons and other
components. The ash point of crude oil is low, typically below the ambient
temperature. Crude oil can also be used as fuel in power plants with diesel

engines, for example in oileld power production. Another application is for
pumping stations located along a crude oil pipeline, where fuel from the
pipeline can be used for the prime movers.
LIQUID BIOFUEL
Liquid biofuels are derived from biological material and can be produced
from a variety of carbon sources. Common liquid biofuels approved for use
in Wrtsil engines include oils from various oilseeds, such as palm oil, palm
stearin, rape seed oil, sunower oil and jatropha oil. Liquid biofuels can also be
of non vegetable origin, i.e. oils or fats from sh, poultry and animals. Rened
biofuel qualities, such as transesteried biodiesel or hydrogenated renewable
diesel, can also be used.
FUEL-WATER EMULSION
An oil-in-water type emulsion is one way of utilising the residue coming from
a renery as fuel in a diesel power plant. By making an emulsion with water
the viscosity is dramatically reduced, enabling it to be pumped at ambient
temperature in warm countries. Using it in the diesel engine requires only a
fraction of the heating needed for heavy fuel oil.

HEAVY FUEL OIL
The fuel specication HFO 2 is based on the ISO 8217:2005(E) standard
and covers the fuel categories ISO-F-RMA 30 RMK 700. Additionally, the
engine manufacturer has specied the fuel specication HFO 1. This tighter
specication is an alternative and by using a fuel fullling this specication,
longer overhaul intervals of specic engine components may be expected
(see the Engine Manual of a specic engine type).

residues delivered as bunkers may range from 840 to in exceptional cases above 900. Most bunkers
remain in the max. 850 to 870 range at the moment.
3) Sodium contributes to hot corrosion on exhaust valves when combined with high sulphur and vanadium
contents. Sodium also strongly contributes to fouling of the exhaust gas turbine blading at high loads.
The aggressiveness of the fuel depends on its proportions of sodium and vanadium, but also on the total
amount of ash. Hot corrosion and deposit formation are, however, also inuenced by other ash constituents.
It is therefore difcult to set strict limits based only on the sodium and vanadium content of the fuel. Also
a fuel with lower sodium and vanadium contents than specied above, can cause hot corrosion on engine
components.
4) Additional properties specied by the engine manufacturer, which are not included in the ISO specication.

MODULAR SOLUTIONS
A module is a self-contained component of a system, which has a well-dened
interface to the other components. Something is modular if it includes or uses
modules, which can be interchanged as units without disassembly of the
module.
As energy demand grows, the high modularity of Wrtsils products
makes it easy to expand a power plant to meet increasing future demand.
PLANT TECHNOLOGY PLANT TECHNOLOGY
90
PLANT TECHNOLOGY
The common interfaces and exibility of Wrtsils modular design, fullling a
range of specications and recommendations, addresses both the demand of
todays customer and potential future needs.
The focus of modularisation is around the engine and inside the power
house, even though modules are also used elsewhere, starting with the
unloading of fuel, lubricating oil and other process-related items. By using
predened modular solutions, Wrtsil can ensure that set performance targets
are reached.

Rapid installation time is one of the main benets. Prefabrication also ensures
consistent high quality. Other benets include the compact and predened
design for container transportation, and the use of well-proven components
from well-known suppliers. The use of portfolio modules leads to higher
documentation quality during the tender phase. When compared to carrying
out such work on site, the controlled manufacturing, cleaning, and painting
processes associated with modularisation, have a positive environmental impact.
For customers, modularised design means higher total feasibility in their
power plant investment.
Some of the benets of modularisation are:

fast and easy installation on site

proven design

quality control

The auxiliary systems provide functions for uid handling and control. They
facilitate storage, transfer and conditioning of the operation media at the
correct process parameters. Some functions are common for several engines,
for example, compressed air units and maintenance water tank(s), while other
units, such as the engine auxiliary unit, gas regulating unit and exhaust gas
module are engine specic.

ELECTRICAL AND AUTOMATION
The Wrtsil Power Plant Electrical and Automation concept provides a complete
plant management solution with standardised modules, generators, switchgears
and transformers, which can be tuned to the customers or utility requirements.
Wrtsil Power Plant Automation is based on the following building blocks:

WOIS (Wrtsil Operators Interface System) is the operators workstation, for
process displays, control actions, trends, alarm and event lists

WISE (Wrtsil Information System Environment) is the workstation for
reports, logbook, electronic documentation and 3
rd
party interfaces

UNIC is the engine embedded control system, handling all the control,
monitoring and protection functions of the engine, together with the PLC

PLC based process control system handles all the control, monitoring and
control functions of the genset and plant equipment

Remote connection provides a secure internet or satellite link, to give
remote access to the information in the WOIS and WISE systems

Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) reporting system, is a subscriber based
condition evaluation and reporting system created by Wrtsil experts.
PLANT TECHNOLOGY
96
Ergonomics have been taken into account in the design of the control room, giving the
operator a comfortable and user friendly environment.
All these systems have been developed with complete integration, and have
clear and easy user interfaces providing a uniform interface and logic for the
operators.
AUTOMATED OPERATION MODES
Operational exibility is applied in the same package supporting either
baseload, intermediate, peak load or stand-by power generation. Thanks to
the intelligent controllers, the Wrtsil solution provides:

True MW control with embedded frequency support and power factor
control for easy plant power management and import/export control

Isochronous load sharing of both active and reactive power for island mode
operation support

Droop mode as a backup and traditional operation mode.
All these operating modes are inbuilt and transfer between the modes is
automatic and bump less.

EMISSIONS REDUCTION
AND MONITORING
One of the principal aims of Wrtsils Power Plants business is to maintain a
high level of expertise in cleaning methods for diferent power plant efuents
and emissions, and to ofer a variety of proven reduction technologies for
diferent market needs.
EMISSIONS REDUCTION GAS ENGINES
Sulphur dioxide (SO
2
) and particulate matter (PM) emissions are insignicant for
power plants running on natural gas. Nitrogen oxide (NO
X
) emissions are also low.
DRY METHODS (PRIMARY)
Modern Otto gas engines use the lean-burn combustion process. In this
process, natural gas and air are premixed in a low fuel/air ratio before being fed
into the cylinders. The lean-burn process efciently reduces NO
X
emissions due
to a lower combustion temperature. An added advantage with the lean-burn
process is the high output and efciency of the engine.
Gas-red lean-burn engines have sufciently low NO
X
emissions to comply
with most national/local regulations using lean-burn primary methods only.
SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR)
In areas that are subject to stringent control of NO
X
emissions due to, for
example, existing pollution levels in degraded airsheds or very strict local
regulations, gas-red engines can be equipped with SCR units. In the SCR, NO
X

emissions are reduced by a reagent that is either an aqueous solution of urea
or ammonia. The SCR units can even reduce NO
X
emissions to a single digit
level with lean-burn engines (in natural gas mode).
OXIDATION CATALYSTS
Gas-red spark-ignited (SG) and multi-fuel (DF) engines can be equipped
with oxidation catalysts for the abatement of carbon monoxide (CO) and/or
hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, if required by national regulations or local air
pollution levels.
WRTSIL IOXI
The Wrtsil IOXI (Integrated Oxidation Catalyst) is a compact, cost efcient
product that is applicable for moderate CO and formaldehyde (CH
2
O) reduction
PLANT TECHNOLOGY
98
from gas engines. Gas engines equipped with IOXI can comply with stack
emission limits of stationary regulations such as Germanys TA Luft 2002.
COMBINED SCR AND OXIDATION CATALYST
In some areas efcient multi-component emissions reduction is required. The
combined catalyst system comprises SCR for NO
X
emissions and catalytic
oxidation for CO and/or HC emissions. In combination with the combined
catalyst system, a thorough optimisation of the engine operation under
diferent conditions is carried out. This ensures the best overall performance.
The Humboldt power plant, located in Eureka, California, consists of 10 Wrtsil 18V50DF
gas engines and has a total output of 162 MW. The multi-fuel (DF) engines are able to
operate on light fuel oil as back-up. The plant is equipped with combined SCRs and
oxidation catalysts and is capable of meeting the strict Californian emission requirements
both in gas and liquid fuel mode.
PLANT TECHNOLOGY
99
EMISSIONS REDUCTION DIESEL ENGINES
Nitrogen oxides (NO
X
), sulphur dioxide (SO
2
) and particulate matter (PM) are
the main emissions of interest regarding stationary diesel engines. SO
2
and
PM emissions are mainly related to the quality of the liquid fuel. Diesel engines
used in the power industry have low carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon
(HC) emissions thanks to their high thermal efciency.
Wrtsils product development strategy for fuel oil-red diesel power
plants is to meet the stack emission limits set by the World Bank/IFC General/
Thermal Power Plants EHS Guidelines 2007/2008, for new stationary
combustion engine installations up to 300 MWth in non-degraded airsheds by
using dry primary methods.
Secondary ue gas treatment methods are available for meeting emission
requirements when necessary due to strict regulations, or when only low grade
liquid fuels are commercially available.
PLANT TECHNOLOGY
100
DRY METHODS (PRIMARY)
The target of dry primary methods in the Wrtsil engine development process
is to achieve the best overall emissions performance, while maintaining the
good thermal efciency of the engine. The main elements of the Low-NO
X

combustion process in Wrtsil diesel engines are:

Late fuel injection start

High compression ratio

Optimised combustion chamber

Optimised fuel injection rate prole

Early inlet valve closing (Miller concept) together with high boost pressure.
These are the key elements for suppressing the combustion peak
temperatures, resulting in reduced NO
X
formation.

SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR)
Wrtsils diesel engine power plants can be equipped with SCR units to reduce
NO
X
emissions if required.
NO
X
emissions are typically reduced by up to 8090% by using a reagent
that is either an aqueous solution of urea or ammonia. The composition and
structure of the catalyst element are selected based on fuel properties. At high
reduction rates, the size of the SCR reactor increases and more complicated
premixing and reagent injection systems are needed. In addition the control
system becomes very critical due to operation within a narrow window.
FLUE GAS DE-SULPHURISATION (FGD)
Several FGD types are available for the power plant market. The most feasible
methods in stationary engine plants have generally been proven to be wet
sodium hydroxide (NaOH) FGD in smaller plants, and wet calcium carbonate
(CaCO
3
) FGD in larger plants. Wet FGD systems are typically capable of
removing up to 90% of the SO
2
emissions. All wet FGD solutions require large
quantities of water and reagents.
The FGD end products produced, either liquid or solid depending on
the chosen FGD technique, need to be disposed of in an environmentally
acceptable way. The composition of the end product depends on the fuel oil
used, lubrication oil, process water and reagents. The disposal and utilisation
options available for the end product should be examined in the environmental
assessment of the project, by considering the existing infrastructure and
legislation/regulations.
ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATOR (ESP)
A dry ESP unit can be used to reduce PM emissions. The ESP technique
provides a stable, low pressure-loss option to reduce PM emissions.
ESPs dry end product, y ash, needs to be disposed of in an environmentally
acceptable way. The composition of the end product depends on the fuel and
lubrication oil used. The disposal and utilisation options available for the end
product should be examined in the environmental assessment of the project, by
considering the existing infrastructure and legislation/regulations.
EMISSIONS MONITORING
The measurement of emissions on a regular basis, e.g. annually, in
combination with strict compliance with fuel specications, is commonly used
for ensuring compliance with emission requirements.
PLANT TECHNOLOGY PLANT TECHNOLOGY
102
In cases where continuous data on emission levels is required, indicative or
parametric emissions monitoring systems will provide robust, good quality and
cost efcient emissions monitoring. In these systems, emissions are calculated
based on process data, such as engine parameters, fuel composition and
ambient data.
In some installations, continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS)
based on analysers are required. There are many diferent CEMS on the
market and the choice of system needs to take into careful consideration the
installations specic features, such as measured components, fuel and stack
conguration. The integration of emissions data handling and reporting into the
plant system is a crucial part of a successful emissions monitoring system.
EMISSIONS REDUCTION EFFLUENTS
The oily water collection and treatment system is an essential part of the
engine power plant. The system is designed to collect water from areas that
are potentially contaminated with oil and other impurities for treatment. Before
discharge from the plant, contaminated water can be either treated on-site
by the Wrtsil oily water treatment (OWT) unit or transported for proper
treatment.
In areas that are subject to stringent efuent limits, biological treatment
might also be required. Wrtsil Senitec Biosys is a biological treatment
system for grey water, treated oily water and/or similar efuents from power
plants.

CONSTRUCTION SERVICES
Wrtsils civil engineer teams have conducted more than 500 projects
over three decades with an unbeatable track record. Our services include
everything from pre-planning inspections to installation.
We have broad experience in building power plants in challenging
geotechnical locations, including areas where earthquakes, landslides,
swelling soil and liquefaction may occur. The project locations range from the
African jungle to the Siberian Tundra.
The properties of foundations and structures are selected individually
to ensure the best possible outcome taking all the ambient conditions into
consideration.
The buildings mainly consist of high-quality prefabricated structures to
ensure shorter construction time and improved risk assessment. By choosing
the right materials, even the energy efciency can be improved, while the
plants environmental impact is signicantly reduced.
Our aim is also to enhance safety and ofer the best possible working

OPERATION OF A POWER PLANT
WITH MULTIPLE UNITS
There are often signicant seasonal, weekly and daily variations in power
demand. In a multi-unit power plant the units can be started and stopped
as per demand. It is possible to optimise the usage of each single unit by
choosing to either provide spinning reserve or to run it at-out to obtain
maximum efciency.
A multi-unit power plant can be run in various ways dependent on the
situation at hand. Basically, there are two main operating principles: spinning
mode and efciency mode. In spinning mode, the gensets are synchronized
and running, but at a reduced load. This way the plant is fully ready to take
large, immediate load increases just in seconds.
While in efciency mode, the minimum amount of gensets are running at
full load to meet the current load demand, thereby allowing them to operate
at their best thermal efciency. Still, all the remaining gensets, which are in
stand-by mode, can come online in a matter of a few minutes to meet any
unforeseen load increases.
MAINTENANCE OF COMBUSTION ENGINES
Maintenance of combustion engines is easy. Keeping strategic spare parts
for exchange purposes on site considerably reduces the downtime required
SERVICES
112
for maintenance. All maintenance can be efectively performed on site. One
engine at a time can be maintained, without afecting the operation of the
other units of the plant.
The multi-unit setup means that the annual average unit running hours,
depending on the actual load prole, can be considerably lower than the
annual plant running hours. In a multi-unit plant the units can be dispatched,
so that the running hours are unequally spread on each unit. This allows
for scheduling the maintenance one unit at a time, thereby maximising
the available power generation capacity at any given time. Ideally, the
maintenance is scheduled at periods of lower power demand.
For Wrtsils combustion engines there is no equivalent operating hours
(EOH) calculation. This means that the maintenance schedule is not afected
by the number of starts and stops.
The gure below provides an overview of the diferent service agreements
Wrtsil ofers. The basic idea behind the service agreements is long-term
cooperation where both parties work towards a shared goal: your companys
continued productiveness and protability. The agreements will always be
adapted and tailored to t your specic needs.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE PRINCIPLES
The below gures illustrate diferent principles for how the maintenance of a
Wrtsil power plant can be scheduled.
The rst principle strives to maximise the rm capacity and availability of the
plant. This can be achieved by using a rotating schedule, where one engine at
a time is serviced.

The third principle allows uctuating business to switch between the
maintenance proles as needed. This is possible thanks to the combination
of condition based maintenance and the exible maintenance window,
which makes it possible to serve the engines within a 10% window of the
scheduled running hours.
Principle 3 Best of both worlds Varying the maintenance schedule, by
switching between serving the engines groupwise and individually

POWER PLANT RELIABILITY AND AVAILABILITY
The below gure illustrates the typical operational availability of a Wrtsil
power plant. In case of matching the plant capacity with the actual maximum
load (corresponding to the power generated by n units), the availability of the
plant capacity is above 96.5%. By adding a stand-by unit, the availability of the
plant capacity can be increased to >99%. Two stand-by units further increase
the availability to >99.9%.

POWER GENERATION GENSETS
Small and medium sized gensets (based on 20/32/32TS/32GD/34DF/34SG)
are normally transported as complete units, i.e. with the engine and its
generator readily mounted on a common base frame. If required by the
logistics of the project, the gensets can also be delivered dismantled into
blocks with only engines mounted and generators shipped separately. If
necessary, it is possible to deliver the gensets as three separate main blocks:
engine, generator and base frame.
Large gensets (based on 46/46GD/50DF/50SG) are normally delivered
for separate mounting of the engine and its generator. Hence, the genset
is transported in two blocks, engine mounted on its base frame and
generator mounted on its base frame, which allows a considerably reduced
transportation weight.
