1.a) What is shear centre and explain its importance in the beams.
b) Determine the shear stress distribution in a channel section of a cantilever beam
subjected to a load F, as shown in figure 1. Locate the shear centre.

Figure: 1

2. A 60 mm x 40 mm x 6mm unequal angle is placed with the longer leg vertical and
is used as a beam simply supported at the ends, over a span of 2 m. If it carries a
uniformly distributed load of such magnitude as to produce maximum bending
moment of 0.12 kN-m, determine the maximum deflection of the beam.

3. A ring with mean radius of curvature of 25 mm is subjected to a load of 2000 N as
shown in figure 2. The ring is made of 10 mm dia. rod. Calculate the
circumferential stress on the inside of fibre of ring at A & B.

4. The two circular sections shown in figure 3 have the same wall thicknesst and
same circumference. Neglecting stress concentration, find the ration of the shear
stresses for
a) Equal twisting moments in two cases.
b) Equal angles of twist in the two cases.

Figure: 3

5. A flat steel turbine disk of 75 cm outside dia. and 15 cm inside dia. rotates at
3000 rpm, at which speeds the blades and shoulding cause a tensile rim loading of
4.3Mpa. The maximum stress at this speed is to be 114Mpa. Find the maximum
shrinkage allowance on the diameter when the disc and shaft are rotating.

6.a) Derive equilibrium equations for small displacement of flat plates.
b) Obtain solutions for a rectangular plate under tensile stress.
