AIR CONDITIONING - I
(HEATING VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING)
Time: 3hours Max. Marks: 60
Answer any five questions
All questions carry equal marks
- - -

1.a) Explain the process of adiabatic mixing and show the process on psychrometric
chart.
b) 30 m
3
/min of a stream of moist air at 15
0
C DBT and 13
0
C WBT are mixed with
12 m
3
/min of a second stream at 25
0
C DBT and 18
0
C WBT. Barometric pressure
is one standard atmosphere. Determine the DBT and WBT of the resulting
mixture and enthalpy also.

2.a) Explain cooling and dehumidifying coils and its Apparatus Dew point of the coil.
b) 40 cmm of a mixture of recirculated room air and outdoor air enter a cooling coil
at 31
0
C DBT and 18.5
0
C WBT. The effective surface temperature of the coil is
4.4
0
C. The surface area of the coil is such as would give 12.5 KW of refrigeration
with the given entering air state. Calculate the dry and WBT of the air leaving the
coil and the coil BPF.

3.a) Explain the concept of steam injection and represent the same on psychrometric
chart.
b) An air washer cools and dehumidifies 18,200 kg of dry air per hour from 41
0
C
DBT and 24
0
C WBT, chilled water enters the washer at 7
0
C with a flow of 18,500
kg/hr. The washer is 88% effective. Calculate the heat removed from the air in
KW.

4.a) Explain the concept of summer air conditioning and hence explain the RSHF.
b) An air conditioned space is maintained at 27
0
C DBT and 50% RH. The ambient
conditions are 40
0
C DBT and 27
0
C WBT. The space has a sensible heat gain of
14 KW. Air is supplied to the space at 7
0
C saturated. Calculate the mass of moist
air supplied to space in kg/hr, latent heat gain of space in KW and cooling load of
the air washer in KW if 30% of air supplied to the space is fresh, the remainder
being recirculated.

5. A building has RSH gain is 310 KW, RLH gain is 100 KWW, the space room
DBT is 25
0
C and RH is 50%. Outdoor air is at 28
0
C and 50% RH. And 10% by
mass of air supplied to the building is outdoor air. If the air supplied to the space
is not to be less that 18
0
C, Calculate minimum amount of air supplied to space in
m
3
/s, volume flow rates of return air, exhaust air and outdoor air, state and
volume flow rate of air entering the cooling coil, capacity, ADP, BPF and SHF of
the cooling coil.
