Five years ago, the Right Rev. Author, then Professor at Mt. St. Mary's Sem-
inary, Cincinnati, having just finished his Bible History, consented to prepare a:
set of Readers for the publishers. The plan was decided on, and as the lessons!
progressed, illustrations for them were designed and engraved by the best artistsi
in this line.
When the Rev. Author was elevated to the dignity of a Bishop, the burden
of his new position, and the regulation of his diocese, which had been without
a bishop for a long time, temporarily suspended work on the books. Much had
already been done, however, and the Right Rev. Author was so convinced of the
need of a first-class series of school-books, and had always felt such a deep in-
terest in whatever related to education, that he declared himself not only willing,
time for the opening of the schools, but have been unavoidably prev^ented fromi
doing so. The First Reader is now ready, and matters are progressing so that the
publishers believe they can promise the Second, Third, and Fourth Readers by the
end of this year. The Fifth Reader will follow as soon as possible.
The Right Rev. Author and the publishers have been anxious to see Cath-
olic school-books brought to the same high standard which non-Catholic school-
books occupy in this country, in regard to the plan and system, as well as the
mechanical execution. The few specimen pages reprinted here will give an
idea of the class of illustration, whilst the name of the author alone, is sufficient
proof that a true and warm Catholic tone and feeling will be found throughout
the series.
The publishers would ask as a favor from such schools as intend changingjl
their books, that they would wait until they have examined the Catholic N.a
TIONAL Series, if they can possibly do so without disadvantage. Special termsii
To the many friends who have so patiently and kindly waited, during the
last two or three years, for the appearance of the Catholic National Series,;
the publishers beg to return their sincere thanks, and whilst they regret that
they can not give them the whole series as early as they would have liked to,
will endeavor, in some part, to make up for the delay by the quality of the,
books.
