JULY 4, 2014 PARADE The Salem Volunteer Fire Department


is gearing up for their annual 3 day July 4th 2014 activities.
The theme for the parade this year will be: Redneck summer.
The carnival will start at 6pm on Tuesday July 2nd and Wednesday
July 3rd at the carnival grounds on Archibald St off from NYS
RTE 22. Stop by and try some of the delicious food that will be
served or try your luck at one of the many games for kids or
adults. Also try your luck at winning by buying a raffle ticket for
one of the many donated prizes. DJ: Will Linendoll July 2nd and
3rd. Live band Thirsty on July 4th. On Thursday July 4th our
parade line-up starts at 4pm at the Holy Cross church on North
Main St (RTE 22). The parade will start at 5pm sharp and will go
down Main St. to Park Place to the carnival grounds on Archibald
St. As usual we are looking for a lot of floats for the parade, so if
you belong to a group, organization, or just a family put your thinking
caps on and start designing your float, because that is what makes
up a parade along with a lot of music whether on a float or
marching. There will be awards for the floats that come closest
to the theme. On July 4th at 9:30 pm there will be a large fireworks
display with a rain date of 9pm July 5th. If you are interested in

always looking for baked goods for all three nights so please

STATES OF AMERICA: When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve
the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the
separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the

The Federal Convention convened in the State House


(Independence Hall) in Philadelphia on May 14, 1787, to
revise the Articles of Confederation. Because the delegations from only two states were at first present, the
members adjourned from day to day until a quorum of
seven states was obtained on May 25. Through discussion and debate it became clear by mid-June that, rather
than amend the existing Articles, the Convention would
draft an entirely new frame of government. All through
the summer, in closed sessions, the delegates debated,
and redrafted the articles of the new Constitution. Among
the chief points at issue were how much power to allow
the central government, how many representatives in
Congress to allow each state, and how these representatives should be elected--directly by the people or by the
state legislators. The work of many minds, the Constitution stands as a model of freedom for individuals under
the rule of law.

U.S. CONSTITUTION May 25, 1787, Freshly spread dirt
covered the cobblestone street in front of the Pennsylvania
State House, protecting the men inside from the sound of
passing carriages and carts. Guards stood at the entrances to
ensure that the curious were kept at a distance. Robert Morris of Pennsylvania, the "financier" of the Revolution, opened
the proceedings with a nomination--Gen. George Washington
for the presidency of the Constitutional Convention. The
vote was unanimous. The general expressed his embarrassment at his lack of qualifications to preside over such an
august body and apologized for any errors into which he
might fall in the course of its deliberations.
The Father of our Country had almost
remained at home. Instead, he helped
create a more perfect union.

Ratification. By January 9, 1788, five states of the nine necessary for ratification had approved the Constitution--Delaware,
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. But the
eventual outcome remained uncertain in pivotal states such as
Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia. On February 6,
withFederalists agreeing to recommend a list of amendments
amounting to a bill of rights, Massachusetts ratified by a vote
of 187 to 168. Although Massachusetts was now safely in the
Federalist column, the recommendation of a bill of rights was
a significant victory for the anti-Federalists. Six of the remaining states later appended similar recommendations. The United
States Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. It was ratified by nine
states in July of 1988. By December
1791 the Bill of Rights was ratified
by 3/4 of the states.

When James Madison helped shape a new constitutional system for the US, he and his fellow
framers had one overriding fear: tyranny.
They divided power among three branches: Legislative, Judicial and Administrative and created
lines of separation that would prevent concentration of power in any one branch. Understanding
human nature, they tried to create a system in which ambition would check ambition. However,
they knew that citizens could be deceived into giving up their freedoms. Madison warned future
generations that if tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a
foreign enemy. They knew how effective fear can be used to induce citizens to relinquish their
liberties. Recent years have proven them, once again, prophetic in their warnings.
The constitution is intended as a protection of individual rights, by preventing one branch from
assuming power, enough power to become tyrannical. No branch was given enough power to
govern alone. Checks and balances were established to prevent that event. Once power becomes
concentrated in the hands of a president, citizens are left only with the assurance that such
unchecked power will be used wisely. This event the framers repeatedly warned us to never accept.
Benjamin Franklin said it best when he warned that they who would give up essential Liberty, to
purchase a little temporary Safety, will receive neither Liberty nor Safety.
Despite these warnings, many people have embraced largely unchecked presidential powers under
the assurance that the rising security state will keep them safe. The shift of power to the presidency certainly did not start with the current president. The trend has been gaining ground for
decades. But, this administration has accelerated the troubling trend, seemingly without objection
from the other two branches. This has created a very dangerous situation.
For instance, warrantless surveillance has increased under this Presidency. War without declaration
was subverted in Libya because the current president declared only he has the right to define war.
(See the trickery here? He defines war, then the Congress gets to declare it. If an action is not
defined by the president as war, the Congress has no authority regarding that action. A basic tenant
of our Constitution boldly discarded.) The current president has asserted the right to kill any US
citizen without judicial involvement. (Citizens deemed by his administration to be terrorists) The
current presidency has placed our press corps under surveillance thereby intimidating another of
our freedoms, that of the Press. Claiming executive privilege, he has refused to turn over any
information to which congress is entitled, regarding a number of scandals. Included in those scandals is the vindictive abuse of power in utilizing the IRS as agents of retribution against political
enemies.
Elections have consequences. Seek out those who have established themselves as strict constitutionalists and put them in office if you wish to continue enjoying what this great country has
offered over the past two plus centuries.

MASTER GARDENERS: Cornell Cooperative Extensions


Master Gardeners will be available for gardening questions and
to do soil pH testing while you shop at the Chestertown Farmers
Market this season. Master Gardeners will be manning a table
every other week at the farmers market. Scheduled dates are 7/
2, 7/16, 7/30, 8/13, 8/27, and 9/10 from 10am to 2pm. The
Chestertown Farmers market is located in front of the Chestertown
Town Hall, 6307 State Rt. 9, Chestertown. Gardening questions
and soil testing can also be done through Cornell Cooperative
Extensions home office at 377 Schroon River Road, Warrensburg,.
