Procedure:
Take coal sample and pass it through 4.75 mm mesh
Air dry it for 24 to 48 hours in well ventilated place
After drying grind & Sieve it in 1.18 mm (ASTM16) and
6000micron (ASTM30 ) sieves
At least 50% of the original sample should pass through
1.18mm sieve
Take 50+ 0.1 grams of the sample of -1.183mm +
600micron size (passed through 1.18mm sieve and
retained on 600micron sieve) in HGI instruments sample
bowl

Keep the 8 ball rollers of 25.400+0.003 mm dia on the
sample and fix the sample bowl to the instrument
Switch on the instrument
The instrument will be stopped after 60+ 1 revolutions (in
3 Minutes)
Remove the bowl from the instrument and sieve the
sample through the 75 micron (IS 8) sieve
Keep it in desiccators for 15 minutes
Weigh the sample and its weight in M
HGI is calculated by the formulae HGI = 13 + 6.93 M

Where M is the mass of the sample passed through 75 microns sieve after grinding and measuring in

Coal Analyser
To assess the heating value of Coal in terms of GCV to know the
worth use of coal
Procedure:
Start the instrument and bring it to analyze mode
Open the oxygen gas cylinder and see that the outward pressure
should be 450 psi
Calibrate the instrument with Benzoic acid pellet
Accurately weighs 1 gram of Coal sample into crucible
Prepare the combustion vessel as explained in the calibration
procedure
Draw 2 ltrs. Water in to the pipette from the pipette tank
Release the water in to the bucket from the pipette by turning the
stopper

Transfer the bucket into the bucket well ,
place the prepared combustion vessel in
the
bucket and connect the fuse leads to the
combustion vessel
Enter the sample weight and id code and
press start button

Pre fire of 3 minutes and post fire 5 minutes time takes place
automatically and GCV value will be displayed on the screen after 8
minutes
Remove the combustion vessel from the bucket and expel the gases
in it
Clean and keep ready for next analysis
Take out the bucket and transfer water back to reservoir
Allow the analyzer to equilibrate
Press menu and press (2) and select results
Press menu and press (8) to enter the corrections of fuse wire,
Moisture %, Ash %, nitrogen and sulphur values
After entering the values for all the samples press menu and press
(6) to get the print out of GCV values of all the samples

Precautions to be taken
Fasten the wire tightly under the sleeves
Adjust the pressure of the oxygen cylinder to fill the
bomb vessel slowly
Care should be taken while the crucible with sample to
avoid spillage of the sample
Expel the gas slowly while diffusing the bomb vessel
after analysis
Repeat the analysis if any un burnt sample is found in
the crucible after analysis
Maintain correct water level in the pipette tank
Calibration of the instrument should be done regularly to
avoid errors

Weigh accurately one benzoic acid pellet in a crucible
Place the crucible with in sample holder of combustion
vessel and fix both ends of 10cms fuse wire in the both
sleeves and arrange the wire in such a way that it is just
above the sample
Place the sample holder in the combustion vessel and
close the lid tightly
Fill the bomb with oxygen to a pressure of 450 psi
(Automatically cut off)
Fill the pipette of 2 liters capacity attached to the
instrument with water from the tank

Draw water from pipette in to the bucket
Transfer bucket in to the well and place prepared combustion vessel
in the bucket and connect the fuse leads enter the sample weigh
and id-code and press start button
Pre fire and post fire takes place and GCV value will be displayed at
the end of 8min
Remove the combustion vessel from the bucket and expel the gases
, clean and keep ready for the sample analysis
Press menu and press (3) to select the current GCV value of the
benzoic acid
Press menu and press (4) to calculate calibration enter the standard
GCV value 6318 and press yes
