The Nature Conservancy is a conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically
important lands and waters for nature and people.
Currently we are searching for a qualified candidate to fill the position of:
FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT (FMU) SPECIALIST

Expanding over 786,000 ha of production forests within Berau district, Forest Management Unit (KPH)
Berau Barat is a large and complex management unit The FMU Specialist serves as TNC Secondee to KPH
Berau Barat and as one of the main focal points between The Nature Conservancy and KPH Berau Barat.
S/he supports the Head of KPH Berau Barat in overseeing and managing various aspects of KPH. The
FMU Specialist oversees and manages all aspects of protection, science, stewardship and community
relations for the forest production management unit (KPHP) Berau Barat. The FMU Specialist will ensure
the support of KPH Berau Barat to facilitate the Conservancys work with communities and timber
concessions within KPH area in Segah, Kelay, and Lesan, and the integration of the Conservancys work
into the overall KPH management. S/he will report to KHP Berau Barat while maintaining regular
communication with TNC, particularly Berau Program Senior Manager, for work planning, coordination
and administrative purposes. These may include one or more of the following functions:
Defines conservation priorities in the management of KPHP Berau Barat, particularly ensures that
the Lesan Protection Forest is integrated into the overall management of KPHP Berau Barat
Supports the formulation of key strategic documents of KPH Berau Barat
Defines conservation priorities in the management of KPHP Berau Barat especially in managing
Lesan Protection Forest as part of KPHP Berau Barat
Supports the implementation and management of KPH key initiatives, such as implementation of
SOP of improved forest management, and mapping of community tenure within KPH Berau Barat
etc.
Develops key partnerships with public and private organizations in order to identify and resolve
technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices and liaises and collaborates
closely with GIZ Team, Forclime FC, other organizations, or consultants engaged in the management
of KPH Berau Barat
Engages local community support for local conservation efforts
Develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks to address the natural
system needs
Ensures a smooth flow of information from the Conservancy and KPH Berau Barat and the effective
use of the Conservancy-collected data, information, and maps to support the planning and
management of KPH Berau Barat
Leads and manages team who supports and improves conservation efforts in KPHP Berau Barat
under head of KPHPs direction
Negotiates complex and innovative solutions with Dinas Kehutanan Berau, other government
agencies, private sectors, and other parties to manage forest sustainably


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
BA/BS degree and 5 years experiences in conservation practice or equivalent combination of
education and experience
Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating
the work of other professionals and partners

Good written and verbal communication skills
Supervisory experience
Experience in partnership development including national to local government partners, private
sectors, community, etc.
Knowledge of current trends and strategies in conservation and land protection
Knowledge of forest certification both mandatory PHPL/SVLK and voluntary FSC
Knowledge of RIL (Reduce Impact Logging) practices and sustainable forest management in general
Experience managing sustainable forest management unit or forest concessionary (HPH)

REQUIREMENTS:
5 - 7 years experience in logging practice or equivalent combination of education and experience
Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans
Knowledge of legal aspect of KPH and KPH guidance by MoF
Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation
purposes
Knowledge of sustainable logging and Reduced Impact Logging practices including forest planning,
GIS mapping, felling, skidding, hauling, chain of custody, and monocable winch
Experience handling legal timber harvesting documents such as LHC, LHP, SKSKB and developing
database
Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and conservation issues in
logging practice such as high conservation value, biodiversity management, logging waste
management
Knowledge of methods and practice of social aspect in logging management such as participatory
rural assessment, participatory mapping, conflict resolution, collaborative forest management, ILO
and Depnaker Regulation
Some knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs
Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant
languages
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and
geographically dispersed organization
Networking with medium to high-level conservation contacts
Proven interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills
Computer literacy in MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
