interviews ever – our discussion with Sam
Totman, ex resident of New Zealand, and guitar
virtuoso.
Hi Sam how are you?
Awwrgh.... (mumbling) So, what's happening?
Not much man! We had to get up early this
morning to interview you, but we had a few
coffees and now we're up for it.

Huh, should be fun interview then! Is everyone

have a band practice, cuz we're playing this thing in
Sweden... So yeah, what you wanna know?
Everything! The latest album been out for a while,
how do you feel about it?
Ah, it's pretty cool... Fuck I don't know man haha.
We seem to get decent amount of people at the
shows... It's pretty cool actually. So how's New
Zealand there? That place, Powerstation still going?!
Yeah, it was called “Oracle” for a while though.
Yeah fuck we used to do gigs at Powerstation and
then everyone was like “Eeewww you fucking
Westies.” We were from Masterton actually. Hey, is
this on the radio, can I say swear words?
You just go for it man. We don't really care about
broadcasting standards.

Got a whole bunch of groupies hanging around
you?
Well, it's picking up to be honest. It's quite surprising,
cuz fuck, now I'm even older than I was before. It's
funny that now that we sold a few CDs, it's getting a
bit easier. I left New Zealand when I was about 22,
and we basically fucking nailed all the ones in
Wellington that were nailable, which is about
probably 3 for me (chuckles) and I was like fuck, it's
a bit of a waste of time staying here.
So where are the cutest girls in the world?
Well, the funny thing is, every place we played at,
say if you scored with bird, we say “Yeah man, this
place kicks ass! And yeah fucking Germany is cool!”
And if you don't it's like, fuck this place is crap! But
then you obviously won't get any more than fucking
one if you're as ugly as fucking me... I don't know
hehe. So the best place is the easiest place.

Very strong stuff. Powerful, driving, brutal, yet not so
over the top to be inaccessible to most fans of metal,
this is Brazilian thrash at its best. Chaosfear have
released a debut here that means business! Taking
the best elements of old-school thrash and
combining them with some of today's best extreme
metal sounds, “One Step Behind Anger” is an
unrelenting beast of a record that demands a
banging head from the first track. Not sure if this
album is available here in NZ stores, but check out

if it's the kind of thing you'd like to track down.

Flawless melodic extreme metal here with plenty of
cool guitar parts and loads of interesting ideas that
hold the listener's attention. Daath have certainly
burst onto the scene from out of nowhere with a
debut which reaches heights that would take many
bands 2 or 3 albums to reach. The performances,
mixing and overall polish of the record is impressive.
It is yet another of the modern metal releases that
you would find difficult to categorize, as there are
obviously so many different influences at work here.
One of the more enjoyable releaees from the 2006
Roadrunner catalog, worth checking out!

Guttural vocals that come at you like a 100 foot tall
demon frog, riffs that pulverize and destroy the
senses, and lyrics constructed of a hate-woven
tapestry of vocabulary... this is Australian brutality
which proves that the pool of talent in the South
Pacific for Death Metal is indeed very deep. If you
like DM, you'll surely like Internecine Excoriation.
This is the type of music that will shock your
neighbors, alienate your parents, and make your pet
cat run away. It'll also kill your budgie.

Gods of War

Firstly, don't get your hopes up when you see that
there are 16 tracks on Gods of War. If you own the
Sons of Odin EP, you will only get 6 new metal
songs; the rest is previously released, or
instrumental / narration work. For those into that
'epic' type of thing, you're in for a treat; to others,
you'll find it really breaks the flow of the music. All in
all, as a Manowar fan I expected a little more, but I
must admit that even 6 new metal songs is a lot for
Manowar, for whom it is typical to release albums
with around 7-8 tracks period. And the music is all
supreme; in fact this album is a MUST OWN, even
more so if you don't have the Sons of Odin EP. As
always, even considering the excessive narration and
instrumental work, this album deserves 10/10. It's
quality Manowar which once again proves why they
are the Kings of Metal!

MICHAEL KISKE

Frontiers
2006, CD
According to Michael himself, the new solo record of
the ex-Helloween vocalist is a very personal
statement. However, I would like to avoid the
“personal” side of things here and concentrate on the
actual music. The songs are slow and melancholic,
and based on acoustic guitar, with violin, piano and
trombone bits here and there. It's not a secret that
Kiske has tried to get rid of his “ex-Helloween”
reputation for a while now, but the problem is that the
new songs just don't do justice to his outstanding
vocal abilities! Michael undoubtedly is one of the
most unique and charismatic vocalists out there, and
it's a shame that he doesn't want to do what he's
really best at – Heavy Metal. This album could be
interesting to the die-hard Helloween fans like
myself, but I don't think that an average metalhead
would find anything to his/her liking here. Which at
the end of the day is really sad.

2007, CD
Studio album 10 from the legendary Greek BM
band. One of the best things about Rotting Christ is
that they don't limit themselves by any artificial
restrictions. All in all it's very smart, well-produced
Metal with harmonies and melodies, chorals and
keyboards - although not overloaded with it. I gotta
admit, it reminds a lot of later Naglfar and Behemoth,
but with a unique Greek approach. Great stuff if you
want something intense but non-boring. Go check
out the new Rotting Christ if you like this sort of stuff!

It doesn't really get any more “true” than this.
Norwegian band Furze, consisting solely of morbid-
looking individual The Ripper brings back the good
old True Norwegian Black Metal. Primitive, ultra fast
Black, no low end, and featuring Satyricon's Frost on
drums. With a wall of noise, drilling guitars and some
grim breakdowns, it actually hurts to listen –
something that not too many bands can achieve
these days! If you like early Burzum, Mayhem and
Darkthrone, this one is for you. Altogether it sounds
like it was recorded in 1992, which I suppose was
intentional. Even though the band is a newcomer, I'm
absolutely positive that Furze will very soon become
a cult act among the fans of the style.

MELECHESH

2006, CD
Although the band was formed over 10 years ago
and already have 3 albums out, if you haven't heard
about them, I won't be surprised... Melechesh
belongs to a small group of Israeli extreme Metal
acts – the scene we don't hear too often about.
Melechesh mix Death/Black with Arabic scales and
Middle Eastern melodies and themes. That of course
has been done by Nile and Orphaned Land, but the
in case of Melechesh, the influences are far greater
and run throughout the entire album, skillfully
entwined into the songs. Altogether “Emissaries” is
certainly one of a kind record and is guaranteed to hit
the spot with people looking for original extreme
Metal. Great stuff.

was easy because it’s ultimately what we wanted. I
think we saw the instrumental stuff as more of a
short-term project. It was convenient at the time
because we didn’t have a singer!

With an EP release in 2005 and 2006, will there be

another in 2007? Or better yet, an album?

Yes! The plan is to start the album late this year

Here's a more typical question... What are your
musical influences?
We all love the classic metal bands, but we get pretty
specific when it comes to modern metal, of which we
tend to like mostly underground stuff. As for main
influences, Reuben’s a big Opeth fan, Tim loves Thin
Lizzy, and Izzy has an Iron Maiden museum in his
house. My personal favourite band right now would
be DragonForce. Yes they’re cheesy as fuck, as
people keep saying, but to me it’s just good-time
music. It puts a smile on your face.
but there was a lot of uneasiness when that shit went
down. Rowan is just starting another band, so look
out for him! The most rewarding thing for Magnum
Opus, so far, was getting the band on track after the
split. We learnt a lot when that happened.
And finally, let's talk about the tour!!! What can
the audience expect from a Magnum Opus show?
Good metal and plenty of good times! Each show
has a good line up of bands so you won’t be
disappointed. We’re trying to play every town that we
can in the country, starting at the end of March with
the lower half of the North Island followed by the
upper half and then, during the winter, the South
Island.

What has been the hardest time for

the band so far? And in contrast,
what has been the most rewarding
and inspirational thing that has
happened?

For me, it was when Rowan our

original bass player left cos he was a
founding member of the band and
we’ve been mates since
kindergarten! Still great mates today,

This gem of a horror film

contains one of the most
hilarious characters I've ever
seen in a movie. An intensely
two dimensional, comic-
book-cheesy homicidal
police officer, complete with
maniacal laugh, and 666
written in pen on his hand to
make him even more evil!

This is the type of flick you

definitely want to watch on
the piss with your mates
round. No plot, no acting
talent (in fact, the acting is so
bad, you begin to wonder if
they're doing it on purpose!),
a large array of bad one-
liners that rival the best
Schwarzenneger films... this
movie has it all!

Although “Psycho Cop” could

be seen as a cheap rip-off of
“Maniac Cop” it should be
noted that both films were
released in 1988, which
makes them a veritable tie
for the mantle for originator
of the police slasher genre.
And while “Maniac Cop”
follows a far more serious
storyline, the entertainment value of each of these
“You have the right to remain... DEAD” films is near equal in its own separate ways.
Directed by Wallace Potts All up, “Psycho Cop” is a movie that anyone who
Starring Bobby Ray Shafer, Jeff Qualle, Palmer enjoys quality Hollywood fare will be disgusted and
Lee Todd, Dan Campbell, Cindy Guyer bored to tears by. But for the easily amused and

interview with French Black Metal maniacs
Eternal Majesty. Enjoy
First of all, for those who are not familiar with
Eternal Majesty, tell us what is the band all about.
Eternal Majesty was born in 1995, after a demo tape
in 1997 and some splits with bands like Antaeus,
Krieg, Judas Iscariot, Temple of Baal we recorded
our first album “From War to Darkness” (Battlesk’rs),
the MCD “Night Shadows” and the 2nd album
“Wounds of Hatred and Slavery” under the Appease
Me / Candlelight banner.
The new album "Wounds of Hatred and Slavery"
is out now on Candlelight Records. Are you
happy with the record?
Yes we are; sound quality, general atmosphere and
composition are really better than “From War to
Darkness” . But I think we can do better!!
What do you think is the best setting to listen to
Eternal Majesty?
For me BM is a personal experience. I prefer to listen
to my music alone.
What are the band's influences? And what are
your favorite bands?
Carpathian Forest, Gorgoroth, Emperor, Immortal,
Behemoth… a lot of old BM bands; my brothers
listen to different things, heavy metal, electro dark
music …
Listening to "Wounds..." I hear a fair bit of old-
school Black, like Bathory, Enslaved, old Naglfar.

Were the references to the "old" sound
intentional, or did it just happen?
Old Black Metal is a part of our influences, I like old
Norwegian BM. we don’t play innovative BM but we
try to do something personal. I think the next one will
sound different.
Many (if not to say the "majority" of) Black Metal
bands have a strong message in the music.
What's the message behind EM?
EM speaks about pain, suffering, hatred and slavery.
All these things are linked for me. We are not a
Satanist band. Personally I consider myself
Luciferian; my vision is a personal vision. I consider
Satanism more like the basic instincts of human
nature and not a religion.
You employ a traditional Black Metal image, such
as corpse paint, spikes, inverted crosses, etc.
How important do you think these attributes are
for a band, and what do you think about bands
who play similar music, but don't use this image?
Corpse paint, for example, creates a cold
atmosphere and dehumanizes; it express something
deep in me and I like this. But the image of a band is
not necessary important. Most important is your
sincerity.
Where would you like to see EM in 5 years? Or 10
years?
I think it’s more important to focus on the present.
And what are your plans for the nearest future?
I'm guessing, promote the album, do concerts?
No, we are working on the next album.
Our traditional question: when you hear about
New Zealand, what's the first thing that comes to
mind?
Hmm!! Your magnificent landscapes.
