ODD MAN OUT/CLASSIFICATION

These are very common type of questions which

are frequently appears in different competitive
examinations.
Classification means to assort the items of a given
group on the basis of a certain common quality
they possess and then trace the different one or
odd man out.
In the problems based on classification a group of
letters (alphabets) or words or Numbers will be
given. All the terms except one are classified
under single head (under the same pattern). The
word which is not under this pattern can be the
odd one among all. Therefore this will be the
required answer.
Questions on classification can be asked in many
forms. Some of them are given below
1. Number classification
In this type a group of numbers will be
given in which all are under a single head
[follow the same pattern] except one
number.
That number can be traced out as odd one.
In the problem, the numbers may be even,
odd, prime, composite, rational, squares,
cubes, binary digits and etc. Sometimes
numbers will be given by mixing them
with some alphabets.
Ex: Find the odd one among the following
1) 7 2) 5 3) 17 4) 15
Sol: In the given numbers all are primes
except 15
Ex: Find the odd one among the following
1) 144 2) 125 3) 196 4) 225
Sol: In the given numbers all are perfect
squares except 125
2. Word classification
In this type, a group of words will be given
based on parts of speech, capitals of
countries or states, places, professions and
etc.
student need to trace the different one out
Ex: Find the odd among the following
1) Zebra 2) Lion 3) Tiger 4) Horse
5) Giraffe
Sol: Here all the animals except horse are
wild animals, while horse can be
domesticated
Ex: Find the odd among the following
1) House 2) Cottage 3) School 4) Hut
Sol: In the given words all are the places to
dwell except school
3. Alphabet classification
In this type a group of jumbled letters
consists of one or more letters will be
given. All the items except one followed
the same pattern. Student need to trace the
odd item out to get the answer.
Ex: Find the odd among the following.
1) AB 2) KL 3) MN 4) OQ
Sol: In first three items letters in the pairs
are consecutive, but in 4
th
item alternate
letters are given therefore answer is 4.
Ex: Find the odd one among the following.
1) GE 2) MK 3) WU 4) QN
Sol: First 3 options contain a pair of letters
which are alternate in the reverse order. In
fourth option letters are in reverse order
but they are not alternates.
Therefore answer is 4.
