Using Geoid Files with SurvCE

1. Download and/or install either Carlson X-Port or SurvCOM to the desktop


computer.
2. Download and/or install Carlson!eoid!rids.e"e# to a location on $our
desktop computer %&$picall$ installed to the '(Pro)ram *iles(Carlson X-
Port(# director$+.
,. -. $ou have Microso.t /ctiveS$nc alread$ installed on $our computer0
make sure that it is not currentl$ occup$in) the COM port.
&o do this1
2aunch /ctiveS$nc and select Connection Settin)s# .rom the *ile# menu.
3emove the check4o" that re.ers to the port $ou intend to use with
Carlson X-Port %&$picall$ uncheck COM1 as shown 4elow+.
Select O5 to e"it Connection Settin)s# and close /ctiveS$nc.
6. Connect $our handheld device to $our desktop computer usin) a serial
ca4le.
7. 3un SurvC8 on the handheld device and select Data &rans.er# .rom the
*-28# ta4 as shown 4elow.
9. *rom within the Data &rans.er# dialo)0 select the SurvC/DD/Carlson
Surve$ &rans.er# option as shown 4elow.
:. 2eave the data collector waitin) .or communications as shown 4$ the
resultin) *ile &rans.er# dialo) 4elow.
;. 2aunch either Carlson X-Port or SurvCOM .rom $our desktop computer. -.
$ou are usin) Carlson X-Port0 select SurvC8/SurvStar/!2# .rom the
&ools# menu to launch SurvCOM.
<. *rom within SurvCOM0 and while connected to the handheld computer via
a serial ca4le0 $ou should 4e a4le to see the contents o. the handheld
device on the ri)ht and the contents o. the desktop computer on the le.t
simultaneousl$. -. $ou do not see the handheld device on the ri)ht0 $ou are
not connected.

11. *rom within the Set !eoid /rea# dialo)0 veri.$ the path to the )eoid .iles is
set to the installed location o. these .iles as de.ined in step 2 o. this
document %&$picall$ 'Pro)ram *iles(Carlson X-Port(#+.
12. Select the desired )eoid model to e"tract an area .rom.
1,. 5e$ in the appro"imate latitude and lon)itude o. the center o. the area.
16. De.ine the )rid si>e .or the area $ou want the model to cover %Supported
si>es are 7=-27= miles0 ;=-6== kilometers and 1-7 de)rees+.
17. ?ame the )eoid model with an$ name that $ou want %e.). )eoid+. @ou ma$
want to name this .ile with a lo)ical name .or the location o. the area .or
.uture re.erence %e.). )eoid-2/+.
19. Select the O5# 4utton to automaticall$ trans.er the .ile to the
'(Survstar(# director$ o. the handheld device. / cop$ o. the .ile will also
4e created on $our desktop computer in the currentl$ selected .older.

created and trans.erred with SurvCOM.
