Dear Inez Anders,

I have had the chance to do a performance appraisal for Kyle Huston. After much consideration I do not
think that he is ready to be placed in the position of team leader at this time. In my opinion Kyle has a
few items that he needs to work on before he becomes a team leader. I have observed Kyle for the last
few months and have taken peer evaluations from 15 group members that work with Kyle. Kyle was
evaluated on three main performance areas: contributing, listening, and facilitation of group problem
solving. All of these categories I believe are an accurate view of what it takes to be a team leader here at
Anders Consulting Company.
Kyles highest performance area is in contributing. He ranked a 2.83, which is an OK rank, on a 2 to 3
scale. In the contributing area, Kyle ranks the highest of his peers by attending all meeting and excels at
offering ideas and suggestions while in meetings. Not only has Kyle exceled in attendance and
contributing his ideas, he also goes above and beyond to meet all of his deadlines. Kyle has never missed
a deadline and has never been late to a meeting.
Kyles lowest performance area is in listening. He ranked a 1.96 on a 0 to 3 scale. This rank of a 1.96 is
considered in between a 1, which states that the member has not performed well in this area, and 2, the
member has performed ok in this area. As stated above, Kyle does an excellent job at offering ideas. He
has provided many ideas about how a job should be done during a meeting. Kyles problem is that he
does not let others share their ideas. He believes that his idea is the strongest and that it should be the
only idea discussed. Kyle fails to summarize and clarify other members ideas and tends to control the
meetings.
The last performance area is facilitating group problem solving. Kyle ranked a 2.18 which is just above
the OK performance level. The category was the second best performance area for Kyle. Kyle does a
good job at asking questions to organize discussions. He also excels in keeping his peers on task. There
were a few times where Kyle was criticized for only discussing his ideas and not listening to the ideas of
others in his group. However, Kyle does an OK job regarding this performance area.
Overall Kyle rank is a 2.42 on a scale of 0-3. This rank is considered just above OK. Kyles strongest area is
contributing then facilitating group problem solving. The area where Kyle needs work is listening. Kyle
excels at attending meetings and offering suggestions during meetings but needs to work on letting
others talk and share ideas. Kyle could be a very good team leader if he would work on these qualities.
With my leadership and help, I feel that Kyle could be a team leader within the next year.
During the last meeting, Kyle and I spoke about his performance review. We have identified areas in
which Kyle needs to work on such as letting other members of his team share their ideas and accepting
and discussing their ideas during a meeting. Kyle and I will be working together on these areas and he
will be assigned to specific projects in order for him to show how he has improved these skills. Thank
you for allowing me to share my opinion with you and for trusting my recommendation. Please contact
me if you have any other questions or comments regarding this performance review.
Sincerely,

Donald Hays
