SPSS Tutorial 2:

The aim of this tutorial is to gain experience with hypothesis testing using SPSS
Exercise One
The marketing director of PR FILMS LTD collected the following data during a mall
intercept surey! She asked anyone who would stop their age" their gender" and whether
or not they had seen the moie Matrix Reolutions! She stopped #$ people!

%*! It is often useful here to conert a continuous aria/le such as age into groups! So"
rather than dealing with a different alue for age for each person you hae" you
need to conert this ratio scale aria/le .age0 into a nominal scale aria/le .age
group0! To do this" on the Transform menu click on :compute;! In the dialog /ox
that opens enter the ,ew Target aria/le name .age group0! <ou also hae to
gie it a type and la/el! In the Functions /ox moe .2,<0 into the numeric
expression field! Then replace the first 6 with the age aria/le! 7se the key pad to
type in the expression =>#&! Replace the second ?uestion mark with the num/er
$! SPSS will automatically code all other alues as %!

Exercise Two
2 psychologist was interested in self esteem in %# and %* year olds! Specifically" she
wanted to know if social skills training improes self esteem!
To test her hypothesis she gae a Self @steem test at the /eginning of the academic year
to %' children selected at random from grade & at a local 8unior high! The children then
receied two social skills lessons per week for the next ten weeks! 2t the end of that
period she gae the self esteem test again!
