he Jeop-
ardy answer
is ... a family-
run business that
has great pizza, is
a staple of down-
town Lincoln and
has a limited-edi-
tion beer in honor of its 10th
anniversary.
The question is, What is Old
Town Pizza?
On July 22, Old Town Pizza or
OTP will celebrate 10 successful
years in Lincoln.
The Browning family got
their start in the pizza business
by purchasing the original Old
Town Pizza in Auburn, in 2002.
The Auburn restaurant was
established in July, 1999 by Bri-
an and Maureen Hayes.
Reese Browning had enjoyed
Old Town Pizza and, when he
found out the original owners
were looking to sell, decided to
take on the business venture.

It became a family-run busi-
ness with Browning, his parents,
his brothers and his children
working to make the business a
success.
My dad (Reese) worked for the
Hayes for several months before
escrow closed so that we could
learn the business, said Mason
Browning, general manager of
the Lincoln location. Within a
year, we started talking about
opening another place.
When asked how they came
upon choosing Lincoln as the
location for their second restau-
rant, Browning explained, A lot
of pieces came together. We liked
this historic aspect of the town
and we fell in love with its
charm.
Those who are not familiar
with their second-floor location
in the Lincoln Brand Feeds
Building may think the satellite
shop downstairs is the face of
their business.
People have actually come to
the satellite space looking to get
a table and order a pizza and we
have to direct them upstairs,
Browning said. This works in
conjunction with the restaurant
upstairs and it acts as sort of a
billboard for us.
If youve been to either the
Auburn or the Lincoln location,
youll be treated by the same
menu.
However, some of the pizzas
have different names.
The combo pizza in Auburn is
called The Mother lode, while its
called The Caboose in Lincoln.

The only time you see the dining room empty is just before the restaurant opens it's doors for the day. If you've ever enjoyed
Old Town Pizza for dine in, then you know that it's usually a full house, but always a very homey atmosphere, with excellent

relationship with their
employees are two keys to
being successful.
Considering this family
had no experience in this
industry prior to pur-
chasing the original Old
Town Pizza and opening
during difficult economic
times, it appears that the
Browning family has
found the right formula
to success.
Another business rela-
tionship that has proven
beneficial has been that
with the owners of Knee
Deep Brewery. The two
businesses have come
together and created a
limited-edition beer that
will only be available at
the pizza restaurant.
The beer is a non-fil-
tered, wheat beer, sort of
like Blue Moon, but with
a pineapple flavor to it,
Browning said. We call it
Alohop.
The beer will be avail-
able at Old Town Pizza,
beginning the first of this
month, and will be served
as long as quantities last.
Old Town Pizza is a
place where you can bring
the family, pick up a pizza
to take home or meet a
bunch of friends for hap-
py hour. You will always
be greeted as if you are
family and served up a
pizza that is second to

Fourth of July recipes can be modifed year-round

elebrating events with
friends and family means
enjoying yummy food
and drinks.
With the hot weather that
the 4th of July usually brings,
refreshing treats should be on
the menu. Easy recipes are also
a must for this day because
you want to join in the festivi-
ties, go for a swim or just be
able to sit down with a cool
drink in your hand instead of
standing at a hot stove with a
spoon in your hand.
Both of these recipes can be
modified for other special
occasions.
Since July 4th is considered
our nations birthday, what
better way to celebrate than
with a birthday cake?
However, with it being sum-
mer, a truly-refreshing dessert
is in order. This is one that will
allow even your gluten-sensi-
tive friends to partake (and for
your friends who may be lac-
tose-intolerant, you can use
lactose-free ice cream).
This dessert can be as easy
or as complex as you want it
to be. You just have to make
sure that it stays in the freezer
until just before serving (so
unfortunately, you cant take it
to a picnic at the park).
Lazy Day Cake
THREE-STEP ICE-CREAM CAKE METHOD
1. Allow 2 liters ice cream to soften slightly.
2. Add ingredients of choice and mix well (or you can purchase ice
cream that already have mix-ins added).
3. Freeze in a spring-form pan lined with cling wrap (or waxed
paper).
Told you it was easy! This is where the fun comes in and you can
even get the kids involved.
For this dessert, we wanted it to look patriotic so we tried to keep
the red/white/blue theme. After we melted strawberry-shortcake
ice cream, we dipped mini Vanilla Wafers in white chocolate and
added patriotic sprinkles. On top of the cake, we added whipped
cream, fresh strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. For
chocolate-lovers, we even drizzled a little chocolate on top.

Lazy Day Cake is not actually a cake. Because of presentation, it looks like a cake but its nothing more than an ice cream
sundae on a platter. A perfect addition to a birthday celebration for anyone who doesnt like cake or wants something a lit-

Here are a few more ideas for other times of the year.
Oreo ice-cream cake
Add a packet of crushed Oreos to ice cream.
Topping: Pile with whole Oreos, whole strawberries,
ice magic or melted chocolate, and white-chocolate
shavings.
Baileys ice-cream cake
Add 3 tablespoons Baileys (or to taste) and about 2 cups
of roughly-chopped malted milk balls or Flake choco-
late bars.
Topping: Top with mini meringues, whole malted-milk
balls, strawberries and raspberries.

ou cant have a party without something to drink
and heres one that even the kiddos can enjoy. Its
delicious, layering drinks is fun and can be done
with many drink choices.
There are two secrets - the sugar content and plenty
of ice. The drink with the most amount of sugar needs
to be at the bottom and having ice in the container will
help to disperse the liquid so that the new layer doesnt
disturb the layer(s) below. After you add your bottom
layer, fill the glass to the top with ice and pour the sec-
ond layer slowly and directly on top of the ice. You can
create drinks like this with alcohol as long as youre
mindful of the sugar content of each ingredient.

1 Cup Blue G2
Gatorade (it has to be
G2 because this has less
sugar)

DIRECTIONS
1. Fill your glass 1/3 of
the way full with
CranApple juice.
2. Fill to the top with ice.
3. Slowly pour the
remaining drinks directly
on top of a piece of ice.

In fall 2013, Lincoln Area
Archives Museum volunteers
began the daunting, yet worth-
while, process of putting
together Images of America-
LINCOLN.
This is actually a project that
was conceived a number of
years ago but it wasnt until vol-
unteer Gail Hayes came on
board and used her technology
skills to get the ball rolling.
It was clear this couldnt be a
one-man job, said Linda
Aitken, Lincoln Area Archives
Museum volunteer. This
became a relay event and every-
one had their hands in the proj-
ect. People had to be involved
who had Lincoln history.
It was the consensus of all
involved that the book could not
have happened without different
peoples skills to put it together,
different patience levels and dif-
ferent work schedules.
The seven-chapter book held
surprises even for lifelong resi-
dent Elizabeth Jansen, a muse-
um volunteer.
It was surprising to see how
many celebrations they had
back then, Jansen said. They
celebrated everything. People
got together, played together,
celebrated together. The whole
town closed down for the
celebration.
Because of the publishers
requirement that each book
contain no more than 128
pages, the book will take read-
ers on a journey of Lincoln,
from its founding through
approximately 1925.
In case you ever wondered
how Lincoln received its name,
an excerpt from the book
explains, Charles Lincoln
Wilson was president of the
California Central Railroad,
which was building the rail-
road through Lincoln. The
town was dubbed Lincoln in
November 1859.
Coinciding with the release
of the book is Heritage Trail,
the free countywide museum
tour that takes place every
year.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on
Aug. 2 and Aug. 3, all the Placer
County museums, from Lin-
coln to North Lake Tahoe, will
offer free admission. If you pre-
fer to enjoy the beautiful
scenery and let someone else
do the driving, you can take the
Saturday or Sunday bus tour
that will visit select museums
for $10.

W
hen youre a kid,
theres nothing
better than a sum-
mer void of school and
filled with lots of swim-
ming (or any sort of water
activity that becomes
available).
However, when youre
a parent, youre always
trying to figure out ways
you can keep your kids
learning, without too
much complaining on
their part.
Not everyone has a
swimming pool, and with
the drought were going
through, getting creative
with keeping the kids wet
and cool in this heat can
be a challenge.
Heres a fun game that
uses water balloons. You
can tailor this game to suit
any age of a child by using
subtraction, multiplica-
tion, division and even
fractions.
Water-balloon
learning
You will needwater bal-
loons, a sharpie/marking
pen, some number tar-
gets, page protectors and
hula hoops/rope. You will
also want a laundry-type
basket to carry the filled
balloons.
Start by making the tar-
gets. Choose four num-
bers (or as many targets
as you want to create) and
all the equations that will
equal one of these num-
bers. After youve written
them on paper or printed
them on the computer,
slide them into page pro-
tectors (they will get wet
from the balloons).
Fill your balloons. Care-
fully write equations that
equal the numbers on the
targets such as 3+4 or 15-5.
For younger children,
you could simply write
numbers on the balloons
and have them match the
numbers with the targets.
Place the hula
hoop/circle of rope on the
ground with the target in
the middle and let the fun
begin!
Have the kids choose a
balloon with an equation
and have them throw it at
the target that contains
the answer.
To make it even more
fun, have a container of
water balloons that the
kids can throw at each
other when they get an
answer correct.
Swimmers Scrabble
You will need...
Sponges
Marking pen
Heres a game that will
bring some literacy to the
summer fun.
Swimmers Scrabble is
easy and inexpensive.
Purchase as many
sponges as you would like
to use as your scrabble
tiles and write a letter on
each one. Toss them into
the pool and have the kids
form as many words as
they can from the tiles.
For younger kids, you
can also have them put
the tiles in alphabetical
order.

Spongy stars
Spongy stars are a great
alternative to water bal-
loons for a couple of dif-
ferent reasons.
One, they last all sum-
mer (if taken care of) and
there arent those pieces of
broken balloon laying
around where toddlers and
pets can get to them.
Every summer, we make
a large batch of sponge
balls for the kids to enjoy
instead of water balloons.
It takes less than two min-
utes to make one of these
stars but the kids will have
fun all summer long.
Its a great way to cool
off the summer and get-
ting hit with a wet sponge
is pretty safe (please
remind the kids to not
throw them at anyones
face). They can be used
every day if desired and
its a great way to cool off
in the summer.
You will need ...
Three sponges
Scissors
Ponytail holders
Cut each sponge into
three lengthwise strips.
When youre finished cut-
ting, you should have
nine pieces of sponge. Tie
them together in the
middle with the ponytail
holder and pull the
pieces of sponge to fluff
up the star. Soak them in
water and let the kids
fight all they want.
Channel your inner
child and get out with the
kids and enjoy some of
these activities. Youll get
some great exercise and
give your kids some fun
memories.

he Lincoln Area
Chamber of Com-
merce is getting very
busy now that the sum-
mer is starting.
I mentioned last month
that weve had a couple of
businesses leave Lincoln
but we are seeing others
start up.
The Double Barrel
Smokehouse opened up
this last month and every-
one Ive talked to tells me
their food is fabulous.
Great to hear they are so
busy.
The chambers execu-
tive director Cindy Eveler
and I met with Lincoln
Mayor Hydrick, Council-
man Paul Joiner and City
Manager Jim Estep for our
monthly chamber/city
meeting and it was quite
upbeat.
Developers are getting
busy, new companies are
inquiring about Lincoln
and economic develop-
ment efforts, and more
importantly, the ability to
respond to inquiries has
greatly improved. The
city has made some
important hires and we
like the direction our city
is headed.
We had a wonderful
Chamber NetMix at Park-
way Dental Group and
Orthodontics on Wednes-
day, June 11 and Dr. Mark
Brown and his team went
over the top serving rib-
eye steaks and Caesar sal-
ad catered by Simple
Pleasures along with cup-
cakes from Nothing
Bundt Cakes. Thanks to
Parkway Dental for host-
ing the event.
Speaking of events, the
Farmers Market kicked off
Thursday, June 12 and
runs every Thursday
through Aug. 28 from 5
to 8 p.m. in downtown
Lincoln.
The Fourth of July has a
plethora of activities with
a pancake breakfast, the
annual parade hosted by
the chamber, fireworks, a
kids zone and lots of other
activities at McBean Park.
