Original design intent: Tertiary hot water pump from central hot water plant serving 110,000-sq-ft campus administration building.

Opportunities. Energy conservation measures: ECM1 has excessive pump head at building pump. ECM2 - VFD was set without
opening the discharge pump balancing valves. ECM3 - Outdoor air compensated controls result in constant flow, yet VFD had been
added with previous ECM. ECM4 - Differential pump head signal should be located at furthest point in hot water pumping system.
ECM5 - Existing pump motor is old and inefficient. ECM6 - Existing pneumatic controls dont allow for energy management.
New Basis of Design: Building hot water heating system will operate on fixed hot water system temperature in place of constant
flow compensated temperature design intent. VFD differential pressure transmitter shall be relocated at furthest point in pumping
system to maximize the VFD capabilities. Building water system will be rebalanced. DDC shall be added to replace the pneumatic
controls. High-efficiency pump motor will replace the existing motor.

ECM-7: Consider completing an entire hydraulic model assessment to possibly eliminate the primary, secondary, or tertiary pumps.
ECM-8: Consider waste heat boiler for hot water heating in heating season and hot water heating for hot water absorption in A/C
season.
ECM-9: Consider domestic hot water solar heat to remove heating load from the existing hot water boiler capacity requirements.
ECM-10: Consider hot water systems ability to operate at a larger hot water supply-to-return temperature differential to reduce
pumping gpm requirements and associated pumping hp requirements.
ECM-11: Consider adding energy use submetering at each building to monitor, measure, and benchmark energy consumption.
With reduction in energy consumption, metering can be programmed to identify reduction in carbon footprint.
ECM-12: Consider utility dashboard (see Tomorrows Environment column from November 2010) mounted in campus public
space (e.g., Student Union Building) to raise awareness to energy conservation as well as other energy and environmental initiatives.
