Prayer alters #%6#US+A"#!S throu3h /e.
%t is only 'hen a /an ,lounders beyond any 3rip o, hi/sel, and .annot understand thin3s
that he really prays. %t is not part o, the natural li,e o, a /an to pray. By *natural* % /ean
the ordinary sensible, healthy, 'orldly;/inded li,e. )e hear it said that a /an 'ill su,,er
in his li,e i, he does not prayK % Duestion it. Prayer is an interruption to personal a/bition,
and no /an 'ho is busy has ti/e to pray. )hat 'ill su,,er is the li,e o, God in hi/,
'hi.h is nourished not by ,ood but by prayer. %, 'e loo? on prayer as a /eans o, de;
8elopin3 oursel8es, there is nothin3 in it at all, nor do 'e ,ind that idea o, prayer in the
Bible. Prayer is other than /editationK it is that 'hi.h de8elops the li,e o, God in us.
)hen a /an is born ,ro/ abo8e, the li,e o, the Son o, God be3ins in hi/, and he .an
either star8e that li,e or nourish it. Prayer is the 'ay the li,e o, God is nourished. Our
0ord nourished the li,e o, God in Bi/ by prayerK Be 'as .ontinually in .onta.t 'ith Bis
&ather. )e 3enerally loo? upon prayer as a /eans o, 3ettin3 thin3s ,or oursel8es, 'hereas
the Bible idea o, prayer is that God*s holiness and God*s purpose and God*s 'ise order
/ay be brou3ht about, irrespe.ti8e o, 'ho .o/es or 'ho 3oes. Our ordinary 8ie's o,
prayer are not ,ound in the "e' +esta/ent.
)hen a /an is in real distress he prays 'ithout reasonin3K he does not thin? thin3s out,
he si/ply spurts it outJF+hen they .ried unto the 0ord in their trouble, and Be sa8ed
the/ out o, their distresses.F )hen 'e 3et into a ti3ht pla.e our lo3i. 3oes to the 'inds,
and 'e 'or? ,ro/ the i/pli.it part o, oursel8es.
F$our &ather ?no'eth 'hat thin3s ye ha8e need o,, be,ore ye as? Bi/.F +hen 'hy as?-
:ery e8idently our ideas about prayer and Eesus #hrist*s are not the sa/e. Prayer to Bi/
is not a /eans o, 3ettin3 thin3s ,ro/ God, but in order that 'e /ay 3et to ?no' God.
Prayer, that is, is not to be used as the petted pri8ile3e o, a spoiled .hild see?in3 ,or ideal
=
.onditions in 'hi.h to indul3e his spiritual propensities ad lib.K the purpose o, prayer is to
re8eal the Presen.e o, God, eDually present at all ti/es and in e8ery .ondition.
A /an /ay say, *)ell, i, the Al/i3hty has de.reed thin3s, 'hy need % pray- %, Be has
/ade up Bis /ind, 'hat is the use o, /e thin?in3 % .an alter Bis /ind by prayer-* )e
/ust re/e/ber that there is a di,,eren.e bet'een God*s order and God*s per/issi8e 'ill.
God*s order re8eals Bis .hara.terK Bis per/issi8e 'ill applies to 'hat Be per/its. &or
instan.e, it is God*s order that there should be no sin, no su,,erin3, no si.?ness, no
li/itation and no deathK Bis per/issi8e 'ill is all these thin3s. God has so arran3ed
/atters that 'e are born into Bis per/issi8e 'ill, and 'e ha8e to 3et at Bis order by an
e,,ort o, our o'n, 8i@., by prayer. +o be .hildren o, God, a..ordin3 to the "e'
+esta/ent, does not /ean that 'e are .reatures o, God only, but that 'e 3ro' into a li?e;
ness to God by our o'n /oral .hara.ter.
% Duestion 'hether the people 'ho .ontinually as? ,or prayer /eetin3s ?no' the ,irst
