history of why at such a young
age he was rst drawn to
collecting 78s. (See page 6].
He writes about his impressive
and extensive collection of
English Dance Dance and Jazz
78s as well.
We also feature in this edition, the
strange story of how recordings
made about 1906 for a cylinder
record company turned up on a
at disc manufacture about 1920
with sound delity better than
anyone ever would have expected.
One side of the disc thats
discussed in the article contains a
recording that does not appear to
have been issued on cylinder, so is
a 'lost' recording rediscovered,
perhaps?
Wes Williams, a regular blogger to
our site, has written a very
interesting article regarding this
recording, starting on page 15.
In this edition, we also feature a
listing of the rst 200, Columbia
X Series recordings starting on
page 49. This exhaustive list is
comprehensive and will
undoubtedly come in handy to
collectors.
We also feature a comprehensive
Louis Levy Discography expertly
prepared by Terry Brown and
Tony Middleton. This extensive
discography starts on page 26
and outlines his English HMV,
Columbia and Decca recordings
from the 1930s to the 1950s.

Collecting 78rpms - A Personal Journey
Written by Jonathan Holmes
Oh but youre so young! This is
the rst sentence from most
record collectors when I introduce
myself as one of their ilk. Sad but
true, being a young record
collector puts you in to a very
small bracket of the hobby. In
nearly four years of record
collecting, it has led to encounters
with Fred Elizalde and Al Bowllys
nieces, an appearance on
Japanese state television, and the
start of my career in the BBC and it all started with the purchase of a
small, dusty black box
My journey in to this hobby was a rather unusual one. Our family never
had vinyl in the house, and nobody listened to jazz. I always disliked
modern music from a younger age, but my choice of listening was from
the 1960s and 1970s. It was a choice of A-Level reading which exposed
me to this hitherto unknown world of hot music and happiness. My
tutor Mr Tebbutt assigned The Great Gatsby to our study. For his rst
lesson, he put the book in our hands and told us dont open it. Dont
even think what might be inside. I want you to go away and research the
1920s and the period this book was set in, because only then can you
understand the novel properly.
That night I was searching online, and I came across a Youtube video.

The song was Since My Best Gal Turned Me Down, by Bix Beiderbecke
and His Gang. I was hooked. My brain was ring in all directions, and I
repeated the video again, and again and on in to the night. Discovering
the pure golden sounds of Bix Beiderbecke had awakened something in
me, a hunt for that toe tapping beat. I returned to Mr Tebbutts English
class with such enthusiasm, particularly so when he read out each
different character with a different voice. Towards the end of the term, I
bought myself a Bix Beiderbecke compilation album on CD, and had it on
loop on my iPod. Gradually, this album and subsequent compilation ones
I bought had converted my music tastes. I now listened to nothing else.
The next year I went to university for the rst
time, bright eyed and eager to discover my
independence I visited a vintage fashion
fair at the university. My wallet was
bulging with cash that my grandparents
had given me for my rst weeks food
shopping, but I decided to call in here on
my way to the supermarket. After
marveling at all the clothes, I came to a
vinyl store and spotted a small dusty
black box at the back. What is that? I
asked the stall-holder. Oh that? Its a 1920s
gramophone. He lifted the rusty catches and
displayed the turntable of the Columbia 109a. Immediately I was in love.
Here was a tangible link to this wonderful new period I was discovering.
That thing came from the 1920s! I talked eagerly about it, and asked
how much he would like for it. 50 was the reply. I opened my wallet,
and realised that 50 was the amount my grandparents had given me.
I decided to have another walk around the fair to think about this
prospect and returned 15 minutes later. Just so you know mate, Ive
had a theatre company want to buy it. That line sold it. I promptly
opened my wallet and purchased the gramophone on the spot. No
theatre company was going to stop me! I was handed a few 78s with this
purchase: an Edison Bell nursery rhyme disc, a Sam Lanin Parlophone
record and a classical record. Thrilled with my new purchase, I took it
back to my student lodgings and wound it up. Placing the needle on this
record was a magical experience I was delighted. The date was 25th
September 2009, and I didnt know it but my life had changed direction
from then on.
The next day, I went back to visit my grandparents and decided to take
The Discographer Magazine - Number 5
April 2014 / 7
the gramophone to show them. That day I learnt how fragile 78s are, the
classical record being broken by the train barriers at Lincoln station!
My grandparents were extremely surprised to say the least, and my
grandmother was horried I wasnt changing the needle after each
record. Together we cleaned the Columbia up, and I thanked them for
their advice.
When I returned to university, I decided
that I should purchase some more
records for the machine. It had since
been overhauled by a clockmaker,
and I was regularly using it to play
records on much to the dislike of
my atmates! eBay seemed the best
place to buy records at the time, and
so I bought my very rst 78rpm -
Duke Ellingtons Black Beauty piano
solo, followed by more and more Bix
records.
After more research, I discovered that playing these records on my
gramophone would lead to permanent damage. So back to eBay I went,
and found a very cheap and imsy deck which had a 78rpm speed. I was
nally able to digitise my records for listening wherever I went! It was
also at this time that I decided that there wasnt enough Bix music on
Youtube, so I used a track from the CD I bought and put it online with a
few photos of the famed cornet player. The reaction was positive, so I
continued to do more uploads in the same format.
As the months went by, my collection slowly expanded and my Youtube
channel also took off. People started writing to me with thanks for
sharing this music. I started using my modern deck as well, and posted
the raw transfers online, but I was never quite satised with the results.
I began to hunt for ways to make my transfers as good as the ones on the
CD, and came across a few forums and people who could help me. I
slowly learnt every technique I could to digitally restore these songs,
and conveniently discovered that the software on my university course
was a big help to me.
It was in 2011 that an odd comment appeared on a video I had uploaded
of Edward VIIIs abdication speech on Youtube. Hi, I am working for a
Japanese TV company who are making an educational programme on
the Duke of Windsor, and wondering if you could help. Thinking it was
some sort of scam to steal my gramophone, I replied and arranged to
The Discographer Magazine - Number 5

have them visit my house for my lming. On the 24th February, 2011
there was a knock at the door. They had arrived, complete with boom
microphones, three different types of cameras, and a translator their
equipment lled my entire front room! I was grilled on this record for
over an hour, then they lmed me at university much to the
bemusement of many students! Being on Japanese TV made me a local
celebrity in Lincoln for the week, and it was a wonderful chance to show
off this new hobby. My family were desperate for me to sell the
gramophone and my records until Japanese TV showed up!
It was during that year that the uploads on my Youtube channel became
sonically more progressive, I was learning fast and it was starting to
attract a great deal of attention. Its a wonderful thing to be able to
reach out to the world and have them reply. People were starting to
write to me from America, Germany, Australia and even South Korea!
In 2011 I went to America for 4 months on a working holiday, and I
planned my travels around the various friends I had made online
through my Youtube channel. First, in New York it was a very well
connected jazz fan who introduced me to Vince Giordano himself when I
went to see his band. Hearing the music that Vince played was another
epiphany for me, no longer was I restricted to hearing this music on
crackly old records, but I could see it live in front of me! I went every
night I could during my time there. She also took me to meet the 91 year
old piano player Marty Napoleon, whose uncle Phil was a prolic
trumpeter in the 1920s. Marty had played with them all, Joe Venuti,
Jack Teagarden, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, and even President
Nixon! I took great delight in quizzing him about Joe Venuti, and I will
always remember the meal we had together. In New York I also travelled
upstate to stay with a record collector in Albany. Waking up on an airbed
in his front room to the sight of 5 cylinder phonographs, a Victor
Victrola 10-50 with automatic record changer, and countless other
gramophones was an odd experience let me tell you! After that, I ew to
California to stay with another collector in Sacramento who also showed
me his wonderful collection of rare nitrate lms. I left America with a
wonderful feeling. In two years I had discovered this unknown world of
wonderful people and lasting friendships, and not to mention good
music!
In 2011, I got a comment on another video upload of mine, with a lady
claiming to be Al Bowllys niece. A brief email exchange followed, and it
transpires she is still living in South Africa with the Bowlly family piano
in her house. I do deeply regret not keeping in touch with her, but I
gathered from her emails that the internet service there isnt too
The Discographer Magazine - Number 5

reliable, and sadly we drifted apart.
I was also contacted by the grandson of Steve Brown, bass player in the
Paul Whiteman band and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings. I sent him
some music, to which he apparently walked down the aisle in 2012!
Back to my university life, and with a burgeoning Youtube channel and a
few hundred thousand hits, I was deciding what to do with my career
next. I had already done a placement at BBC Radio Lincolnshire, as part
of my degree course. One of my university tutors, (who incidentally
subscribes to my channel!) recommended that I approach the Howard
Leader Show on a Sunday afternoon. Howard has been with the BBC for
quite a long time, and his show is devoted to jazz, swing and dance
probably one of the few places on the BBC where you can hear Jack
Hylton played as a record request! I remember my rst day on the show
well, it was pouring with rain! I turned up, eagerly introduced myself to
Howard, his wife and their dog the latter was most displeased at losing
her sleeping space under the desk where I now sat.
The next week, I let slip to Howard that I had a
78rpm collection, and that I could bring in a
CD to play on the radio. Howard grinned,
and was delighted at the proposition. When
the time came, I stood at the studio door
with my CD in hand and said here you go
Howard. He looked at me and gestured me
in. Do you want to present these records
yourself? I was attered! In just two years
after buying my gramophone I was presenting
my own record transfers to thousands of people
across Lincolnshire. The reception was wonderful, with many of the
regular listeners ringing in to congratulate me on my music tastes. And
so began my career in the BBC. Over the next few months I played my
own 78s for 15 minutes every week, and it put me in great stead when I
worked my way on to the payroll at BBC Radio York.
The most recent experience of note came only a few weeks ago. In my
former second job, I sold computers at PC World, and I was approached
by a rather eccentric looking lady. Well young man, are you going to
serve me? I silently groaned, and stapled a smile to my face. The
woman had come in looking for a cable to connect her tablet to the
computer. I promptly showed her what she was looking for, and she
exclaimed you know, I dont understand all this technology! I joked:
you should see my jazz gramophone record collection at home!
The Discographer Magazine - Number 5
April 2014 / 10
The lady turned to me, and replied thats odd, you know my uncle was
involved with jazz at the Savoy Hotel in the 1920s? My eyes lit up, and
I immediately began to quiz her. Whats your name, who was your
uncle? When she said that her uncle was none other than Fred
Elizalde, my mouth hit the oor. I genuinely could not believe that I had
randomly bumped in to Freds niece on a nondescript day at PC World.
She produced her tablet, and showed me photos of Manuel Lizz
Elizalde, and told me all sorts of details about the family history. To
think that such jazz heritage lives just a few miles away from me in
North Yorkshire! We exchanged details and I have been in touch with
her since.
More recently, the grandson of Earl Crumb wrote to me. His grandfather
was the drummer to the New Orleans Owls, a mid-1920s band recorded
by the Columbia Company. He had never heard his grandfather play, and
introduced this music to his daughter who reportedly went mad dancing
around the house.
My gramophone record collection eventually led to full time
employment at the BBC, as what started out as work experience on a
music nostalgia program eventually lead me to apply for internal jobs
inside the corporation. I now work for BBC Radio Bristol, and live in the
beautiful city of Bristol, which is conveniently close to London!
Being so close to the capital has been an eye opener for me. Now I can
nish work, step on a train, get changed in to something more period,
and be dancing that night to the sounds of a live dance band. I suddenly
nd my feet moving to the beat, and its an insatiable urge that grips me
when the music starts playing. In February of 2013, I danced in the
Blackpool Tower Ballroom, later in 2013 I danced in The Savoy Hotel,
London. Call it a clich, but nothing beats doing the Charleston at The
Savoy.
So here I am, three and a bit years down the line with a few hundred
gramophone records, a Youtube channel about to break 1,000,000 hits,
and a huge number of friends around the world. I make no dramatics
about the fact that the small, black box I bought in 2009 has literally
changed my life. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that it would
lead to so many wonderful experiences, and now I am becoming more
involved with the British dance band circles, these adventures are set to
continue. As Henry Hall once said, Heres to the next time!

A Strange British Path
Written by Wes Williams
This is the strange story of how recordings made about 1906 for a
cylinder record company turned up on a at disc manufacture about
1920 with sound delity better than I ever would have expected. One
side of the disc contains a recording that does not appear to have been
issued on cylinder, so is a 'lost' recording rediscovered.
Apart from 78s, my other main interest is concertinas and I have a site
(concertinas.org.uk) which contains information about the instrument
and audio recordings of some of its players. The 'King' of the concertina
from the start of recording until his death in 1929 was Alexander
Prince (real name Alexander Sutherland) and one of my projects was to
produce a reasonably comprehensive discography of the recordings he
made (See Link 1 below). From 1912 until his death, he was exclusively
contracted to Columbia, and made many recordings that were released
on Columbia's budget Regal label. So I only had to research from about
1900 until 1912. Many of his early at disc recordings were made for
The Gramophone Company (later HMV) which were easily found in the
British Library on-line catalogues, and I was able to determine that he
had made cylinders for Edison, Edison-Bell, and Sterling labels amongst
others. I managed to locate an interview with Prince from 1906 (See
Link 2 below) which mentioned his connections with the Russell
Hunting Company (maker of the Sterling cylinders), and also got hold of
a book about Sterling published in 1975 with contributions by Sydney
Carter, Frank Andrews and Len Watts, all well known for discography
work. Twenty two of Prince's Sterling recordings were issued between
April 1906 and April 1908, but seven new titles were issued in February
1909, when the company briey came out of receivership.
The Sterling book produced an surprise - some of the Sterling cylinder
recordings (perhaps up to 160 of various artists) had been released by
the French company Path as 8" inch at disks in September 1908, at a
time when Sterling was in receivership. The two main recording
industry personalities of the Sterling company and its various owner
and related companies were Louis Sterling (soon to be Head of
Columbia) (See link 3 below) and Russell Hunting. The book suggested
that Hunting had somehow made the Sterling master cylinders available
to Path, and noted that Hunting went on to become Chief of Recording
for Path within a year and that contemporary accounts credited the
Path titles to Hunting's efforts. Path later produced these discs in
different sizes.
The release of these titles by Path caused quite a stir. Famous artists of

the time, including Peter Dawson, John McCormack, Walter Hyde, and
Eleanor Jones-Hudson all had letters published that denied that they
had ever recorded for Path, and Prince himself wrote to The Phono
Trader and Recorder stating that he had only made disc records for The
Gramophone Company and its Zonophone budget label. But as proper
copyright laws had yet to be established, no further actions could be
taken.
Early Path discs are totally unlike most others - they start in the centre
and play to the outside, and the groove information is cut vertically (hill
and dale) as opposed to the horizontal cut (side to side) of most others.
This vertical cut made them playable only with special sound box heads
on the wind-up gramophones of the time. Path masters are also
different - they were made on large diameter cylinders, and then
transferred to discs or cylinders using a mechanical pantograph
mechanism.
About six weeks ago I noticed a Prince recording on Path for auction on
eBay. I had seen the odd one or two before, but I hadn't succeeded in
winning them. But this time I was the only
bidder, and I got it for 4.99 (US$ 7.50;
EU 5.50) ! The Christmas season meant
that the disc was led away until this
week, when I started to transcribe it.
The rst thing I noticed from the label was
that this Path was made in England, not
France. It wasn't 10 inch diameter, but
10.5 (26.5cm).
I put it on the turntable, and put on my
dust bug. The dust bug skated
immediately to the centre! I put on the
arm with a 4.0 mil stylus tted, and it
jumped madly back and forth. After a few
trials I found that I could get it to play
properly by increasing my tracking
weight from around 2 grams (the
cartridge force is supposed to be 1.75-2.25
grams) to 3.5 grams, and applying
maximum anti-skate. The disc played in
normal fashion from the outside to inside,
but was vertical cut, so still had some
early Path characteristics. After the
usual inverse-RIAA, declick, sum to mono
(with one channel inverted),and a bit of
EQ, I was astonished to hear two
recordings with an amazing delity of

sound, approaching that of an electrical recording, although with fairly
high levels of noise and frequent thumps. How could this have come
from a cylinder recording of 1906?
I searched the internet for clues about the record, but found very little.
Path had made edge start records from 1915, had introduced
horizontal cut into the UK about 1922, and had abandoned vertical cut
about 1925. I couldn't nd anything about the English Path factory. I
browsed around my library odds and ends, and found a copy of Talking
Machine Review from Autumn 1995 (I only have two of these
magazines). By sheer luck, the rst article by Arthur Badrock was
about Diamond Double Discs, rst issued in January 1915. Reading a
little further, I discovered that these became Path Diamond Discs in
May 1916. Prince was one of the artists on the Diamond label. The label
was abandoned in January 1919 at number 0428, but in September
1919 the Path 'scroll' label was introduced in the UK with initial
numbers 1001 to 1121 being re-issues of Diamond discs, and
manufactured at West Drayton, Middlesex. As my disc is number 1213 it
must have been newly cut from a Path master about 1920. The
mystery was solved.
Of the two sides on this record, both pieces are well known as part of
Prince's repertoire. But the 'Honest Toil' side never seems to have been
released by Sterling, so we now have a new 'lost' recording of Prince
available. You can hear the recordings here:
http://www.78rpmcommunity.com/mp3-music/albums/436
As a result, I'm starting to reconsider Prince's recordings on Edison-
Bell. I'd always assumed that the cylinders were different recordings to
the disc ones. But could they have been transferred from cylinder to
disc in a similar manner to the Path method? There are many other
Edison-Bell recordings that could follow the same criteria.

British Labels: The Gramophone
Company (HMV) 1898-1925
Written by Wes Williams
It would need far too much space to completely document The
Gramophone Company (HMV) recordings, so this short article will
concentrate on single-sided and early double-sided records before
approximately 1925. All these records will be acoustic recordings.
Although this label is now universally known as HMV (His Masters
Voice), that name is only a later company trademark, and the company
is "The Gramophone Company". This can be seen by looking in the arc on
the lower edge of almost any HMV label, where "The Gramophone Co." or
similar can be seen . The earliest company name was "The Gramophone
and Typewriter Ltd" and discographers usually refer to these early HMV
records as 'G&Ts'. The company was founded in 1898, and part of the
original catalogue was sourced from American Berliner recordings, and
the rst London recordings made in mid August 1898. Until pressing
factories were established in the home countries of the divisions of G&T,
all records were pressed in Hannover at Berliner's plant. Until about
1901, G&T records do not have paper labels, but appear with engraved
or embossed Berliner's Gramophone motif.

records were released with paper labels.

The HMV image did not appear on labels until 1909, and was not
registered as a UK trademark until 1910.

In the USA, Victor was the companion company, and also used the 'HMV'
image. Although the image shows a dog listening to a at disk player, the
painting originally showed a cylinder player.
Single Sided Records
The rst single sided records were 7 inch diameter, but these were
dropped and all records were then released as 10 inch, and later as 12
inch. The 7 inch records were labelled 'Gramophone Record', the 10 inch
'Gramophone Concert Record' and the 12 inch 'Gramophone Monarch
Record'.
The numbering system used for all single sided records was based on a
block of 9,999 numbers. It is possible to roughly identify the material on
a recording from number alone. This block was sub-divided based on
different types of content as follows:
1 to 499 'Military' Bands
500 to 999 Orchestras
1000 to 1999 Speech
2000 to 2999 Male Vocal Solo
3000 to 3999 Female Vocal Solo
4000 to 4499 Multiple Vocalist
4500 to 4749 Chorus
4750 to 4999 Choirs/Religious
5000 to 5499 Cornet/Horn
5500 to 5999 Piano
6000 to 6249 Clarinet
6250 to 6499 Banjo
6500 to 6699 Bagpipes and Drum Bands
6700 to 6749 Military Bugle
6750 to 6999 Xylophone
7000 to 7249 Trombone
7250 to 7549 Mandoline, Zither
7550 to 7699 Bassoon
7700 to 7849 Bagpipes
7850 to 7899 Cello
7900 to 7999 Violin
8000 to 8499 Multiple Instruments
8500 to 8999 Balalaika
9000 to 9099 Piccolo
9100 to 9149 Concertina
The Discographer Magazine - Number 5

9150 to 9249 Flute
9250 to 9799 Miscellaneous including Whistling, Bells, Chimes, and Imitations
9800 to 9999 Viola
In spite of all these available numbers, some types of material quickly
exceeded the available numbers. These were released as 2nd, 3rd, etc
series and indicated by the series number followed by a dash at the
beginning of the catalogue number. Most notable was the Male Vocal
Solo category, with some records appearing with a series 7 prex.

While other companies were quick to convert to double-sided records
(including HMV's Zonophone subsidiary), single sided records
continued to be listed in the HMV catalogue until towards the end of the
1920s decade, when many of the most popular recordings were re-
released as double-sided records.
Early Double Sided
The rst double-sided HMV records were not released until September
1912 as the 'B' (10 inch) and 'C' (12 inch) series. Much of the catalogue
for these two series could be described as 'popular', since HMV
continued to release 'classical' material as single sided.
In February 1918 the 'D' (12 inch) and in July 1918 the 'E' (10 inch)
double sided series were introduced. The catalogue for these two series
contained many more 'classical' releases.
The next two series to be introduced were the DA and DB series around
1923/4. This series nally took up the position of the single sided series,
and eventually re-released the most popular of the single-sided

recordings in double-sided format.

Louis Levy
Prepared by Terry Brown & Tony Middleton
A discography compiled by Terry Brown &
Tony Middleton, based on Alasdair Fentons
original, with corrected recording dates/matrix
numbers, music titles for Medleys, including
composer/lyricists and additional Levy sessions
making it the most comprehensive yet. The
original listing has been completely revamped
and now appears chronologically. Amendments
and additions welcome. The original brief Levy
biography by Alistair Fenton, has been revised
to reect current research on Levy.
Louis Levy was born in London on 20 November
1894, and began his career by paying "d a
lesson to learn the violin. At the age of ten he was competent enough to
play with Charlie Austins Juvenile Troupe. In 1916 he became
interested in music for the cinema, and became a pioneer in the
evolution of bringing music in lms from the cafe type accompaniments
to having pieces specially scored for individual lms. In 1923 Levy
began broadcasting lunch time concerts from the Pavilion Cinema at
Shepherds Bush, where he was MD. In mid 1928 he became President
of the Cinema Musical Directors Association and extended his own MD
activities to include the Capitol Kinema in Londons Haymarket. Later
in 1928 he paid a visit to the States, where he saw some experimental
sound lms, and realised that this was the coming thing. Louis arrived
back in the country, just as the Gaumont-British Company, who made
lms at their Shepherds Bush Studios, had hurriedly decided to convert
the current lm High Treason into a talkie. They asked Louis to do
the score, and from this beginning in 1929, he was appointed Musical
Director for Gaumont British/Gainsborough. This was primarily an
organisational and executive role, indeed, Levy described how he
operated a casting Bureau, whereby he brought in composers and
arrangers to deliver a soundtrack to suit the style/content of the lm

concerned. Although Levys
name appears as MD on the
credits of hundreds of lms
made over the 1930s, most,
(if not all), of the composing,
scoring and conducting of
what you hear was
undertaken by others,
including, Bretton Byrd, Jack
Beaver, Clive Richardson,
Hubert Bath, Cedric Mallabey,
Leighton Lucas, Charles
Williams, Bob Busby, Walford
Hyden, Hans May and many
others. Levy worked for
Gainsborough to 1948, then
with Associated British, with
spells at MGM British and 20
th

Century Fox in the same
capacity in between. Louis was
also featured extensively on
BBC and commercial radio through his Music from the Movies
programmes which he rst introduced back in 1936. Levy recorded
extensively with his Gaumont-British Symphony Orchestra for HMV/
Columbia, and later Decca. Almost all of Levys radio and record
arrangements were undertaken by Peter Yorke, who created the
immediately recognisable Gaumont British Symphony sound. Levy died
on 18 August 1957.

Columbia
Masterworks
X SERIES
Written, Researched and
Prepared by Sam Hopper
This project traces Columbias
chronological release of the 78
rpm albums sets released between
the 1930's and early 1950's for the
X series.
Columbia's X Series featured 2,
78rpm records in an album
consisting of classical music
mostly; although later in the
series; this was extended to light
classical, song, folk, jazz and some
Broadway theatre based music.
The series consisted of 355 album
sets (of which 353 were issued).
Sets, 192 and 275 were never
issued and as yet, no copies have
ever surfaced even though record
numbers were assigned. Details on
these two sets are sketchy.
Each entry follows a simple
format:
composition(s)
composer(s)
performer(s)
various record sequence numbers
(released for each format - standard,
automatic and drop-automatic)
matrix numbers
recording dates
international record numbers (and)
excerpts from contemporary
reviews
Even though this discography
features Columbia US Masterwork
releases for the X series, I've
endeavored to list as many
international releases of each
recording as possible.
In many cases, the matrixes of a
recording were shared between
Columbia's afliated companies in
other countries. In particular, I
have listed, where known, record
number equivalents for the United
Kingdom, France, Argentina,
Australia, Great Britain and
Switzerland.
This listing features the rst 200
sets in numerical order for the X
series only. Details on the other
155 sets will be listed in a later
edition.
If you are able to assist with details
of any set in the X series, you may
wish to consider joining my
discography group online at:

REVIEW EXTRACT:
The violinist has a strong wing. That bow shows forth
shades and subtleties worth minute attention.
The nale is richer than the rst movement. Huberrnan [...]
builds up the excitement, and I feel that the band is getting
more point into its rhythm, though in those three-in-a-bar
bass digs it is difcult to prevent monotony. The movement
is short and concentrated. I wish Beecham would try
treating some Bach as he treated Messiah; I might not
approve, but it would be good fun. This conductor does his
best for the music, the recorders ably abet, and the violinist
does even better....

An admirable and perfectly balanced performance of a

better recording exists for the purpose of demonstrating

Review: Music Educators Journal, Vol. 25, No. 5
(Mar., 1939), pp. 80
REVIEW EXTRACT:
Two concertos from the classic period are played by Mme.
Roesgen-Champion with Gaillard and the Paris Symphony:
Haydn: Concerto in D Major, Op. 21, in which the soloist
uses a piano; and Mozart: Concerto No. 1, in F Major, K. 37,
in which the solo instrument is a harpsichord. Both are
recorded by Columbia, the rst being set X-118 and the
second set X-114. Both are early works, but works of very
great beauty and purity. Mme. Roesgen-Champion plays
brilliantly. The orchestra is at times somewhat subdued, but
in general both sets come in the "must" class for any good
library...
