HOW I GOT MY FIRST BIG BREAK I knew I wanted
to start writing ction for a certain group of editors
at a publisher, so I crashed their holiday party and
drank some shots with them. I followed up with
an editor I met there, and I ended up ghost-writing
a book series. That experience led me, eventually,
to writing Pretty Little Liars.
FUN, FEARLESS FEMALE I ADMIRE I love Ellen
DeGeneresshes so herself, which is refreshing.

BOOK I READ OVER AND OVER AGAIN I read Catcher in the Rye
almost every year. (I know its clich to do so,
but I dont care.) That book has changed so
much to me over the years. As Ive grown

and lonelier to me than he was when I was
young but also more heroic.

a hot new relationship abruptly turns cold.
BEST ADVICE IVE GOTTEN I got it when I
was single: Dont worry. You just havent
met the right person. When youre single,
its tempting to blame yourself because it
gives you a sense of controllike, if I x
myself, then a relationship will come my
way. But the older I get, Im convinced its a
question of meeting the right person.

ROSE MARIE WALANO
Craziest thing youve done
for love? I wrote a song for
somebody and played it
onstage at her party. Ive
picked up the guitar a lot
more lately. Im working
on building a recording
studio in my house. Any
way I can bring more
music into my life, I do.
@VictoriaFerosha: Its been a long time since High
School Musical. Do you have any plans for musicals
in the future or maybe a Broadway debut?
Im a musical junkie and I love Broadway, so to answer
your question, one hundred percent yes.
What are some of your
deal breakers? I dont
believe in deal breakers.
I believe in things you
help people figure out
and get through. To set
a deal breaker before you
even meet? No way.
Would you ever date a
fan? Sure. You cant label
somebody as a fan. Shes

to be someones fan too.

54 COSMOPOLITAN | JUNE 2014
FOR ME, WRITING A BOOK
is like a very long ver-
sion of that childhood
game Marco Polo. I sit
alone in my basement
for a few years say-
ing, Marco, Marco,
Marco, Marco, and
then nally the book
comes out. And if Im
lucky, people start
saying, Polo! When
writing my novel The
Fault in Our Stars,
I always imagined
those people would be
teenagers. My books
are for young adults,
afer all.
But in the weeks
afer The Fault in Our
Stars was published
in 2012, I heard
from more and more
proper adults. They told me their
kids had given them the book or
theyd read it in book club or their
friends had recommended it.
Suddenly, the vast majority of my
readers were grown-ups.
Ever since, Ive been thinking
about why stories about teenag-
ers resonate so much with us as
adults. Ive been a passionate
adult reader of YA ction for a
decade, and what I nd so compel-
ling about the best YA ction
is its unironic emotional honesty.
When youre a teenager, youre
ofen doing so many important
things for the rst timeevery-
thing from falling in love to grap-
pling with heartache and loss. You
also begin to ask the big questions
of humanness: What, if anything,
is the meaning to all this? What
are my responsibilities to myself
and to others?
The Hunger Games, Divergent, Pretty Little Liarswhy do we devour young-adult ction
well past our YA years? John Green, the best-selling author of The Fault in Our Stars, explains.
THERES NO AGE LIMIT
TO LOVING TEEN DRAMA
#REALTALK
est and straightforward
in their social analysis.
Theyre not just beauti-
ful stories, theyre also
useful ones.
Its not like we stop
needing the comfort
and help that a good
story can bring when
we graduate from
high school. I am still
looking for answers
to questions about the
meaning of life. I am
still trying to fathom
the wondrous strange-
ness of love. I am still
trying to make my way
through life despite
heartache and loss.
So yes, when I set out
to write a novel about
two young people liv-
ing with cancer who
fall in love with a book and then
with each other, I was writing
it for teenagers. But I was also
writing it for my adult selfthe
one who wanted to know whether
love really is stronger than death
and who wanted to nd hope and
joy and humor amid hard times.
Those desires know no age.
Reader or writer, we love
stories about teenagers, because
although they can be cynical
about many things, they arent
cynical about love, hope,
and the stu that really matters,
like the future. While I am
profoundly glad I will never be
a teen again, I am thrilled to read
(and write) about them because,
deep down, its their enthusiasm
and curiosity that we can all
admire and wish to emulate
long afer weve reached proper
adult status.
Ansel Elgort
and Shailene
Woodley star
in The Fault in
Our Stars in
theaters June 6.
My favorite YA stories approach
these questions directly and
enthusiastically. Author Sarah
Dessen writes wonderful love sto-
ries, but they also confront issues
of abuse and divorce head-on.
Laurie Halse Andersons novels
deal compellingly with eating dis-
orders and sexual assault. Series
like Veronica Roths Divergent and
Marie Lus Prodigy may be set in
dystopic futures, but theyre hon-

64 shades that nail the trends.
#powerofcolor
Marriage is amazing. Its like living with your best friendsomeone you
sleep with, laugh with, cry with, and eventually turn into the Crypt Keeper
right in front of like its not even a thing. But you know whats hotter
inadequate. In a healthy relationship, there is stability and
security. Sex is always an option. And like anything that is
available freely and constantly, theres just no real urgency
about it. Especially when Mad Men is on. That was, until
I and 65 million other women met Christian Grey.
I was browsing through a bookstore when a salesgirl
asked if Id read the Fify Shades of Grey trilogy. Really?
56 COSMOPOLITAN | JUNE 2014
HOT & HILARIOUS
When sex got stale for actress/author Jenny Mollen and her hubs,
Jason Biggs, she turned to the Grey sideonly to discover that not
everyone has the, er, balls to play Christian and Ana.
MY FIFTY SHADES
CONFESSION
I said, more than a little disturbed.
Do I look like someone whos read
any trilogy, ever?
Trust me, this isnt your typical
trilogy. She handed me the rst
book. It will change your sex life in
a week.
To be honest, I wasnt necessar-
ily convinced my sex life needed
changing. I was perfectly okay with
our dogs watching Jason try to get
an erection and
equally ne with
them sitting
on my face while
he was going
down on me.
(To clarify: We
dont fuck dogs.
I just get dis-
tracted during
sex sometimes.)
Its not that
Im not a sexual person. Its just
that Im never good at anything
when I know I have to be seri-
ous. Sex with your best friend can
feel like when youre in detention
and if one of you even looks at the
other the wrong way, youre gonna
crack up. My husband doesnt help
when he says things like Smell
my hands. Do they smell like poop
to you? One day, he called me into
the bathroom, beaming with pride,
to show me that he had shit my
initials in the toilet. He has pulled
tampons out of my vagina and
farted on my face while Im half
asleep for his own amusement.
Not that all that isnt super hot. Its
just not the kind of behavior that
sets you up for an orgasm. So for
16 bucks, I decided, What the hell?
and bought the book.
Maybe it was the graphic sex.
Or the graphic sex or the graphic
sex. But within two days, I was
nished with the rst book
for the payo. And
though nothing
makes me more
frustrated than
waiting, the waiting
is the best part. We
ofen fail to recognize
Jenny Mollen
and Jason Biggs
To be
honest, I
wasnt
necessarily
convinced
my sex
life needed
changing.

THE POWER OF COLOR
REVLON NAIL ENAMEL
A Chip Deant formula thats untouchable.
64 shades that nail the trends.
#powerofcolor
that by immediately acting on our
carnal desires, we take a chip out
of the mountain of lust that got us
there in the rst place. Like every
TV show from The X-Files to Sex and
the City, the minute the two leads
get together, we stop giving a fuck.
The story revolves around
the dynamics of a BDSM (bondage
and discipline/sadism and mas-
ochism) relationship, something
Id be hard-pressed to seek out in
real life. Discipline tops my list of
most-hated things, followed closely
by portobello mushrooms. If a guy
tried to tie me up, Id probably freak
out and bludgeon my seducer
to death with his own butt plug.
Luckily, the BDSM merely
provided entre into a larger world
of role-play and fantasy. Most men
can pop in a
porn and get
hard the second
they see a
faceless pussy
staring back
at them. But
women require
more mental
stimulation.
We want a
story. When-
ever I watch
porn with
Jason, I insist
we sit through
the beginning
narrative.
If Im gonna
care about two dudes coming on a
chicks face, I at least need to under-
stand how they all know each other.
Oscar Wilde said, Everything
in the world is about sex, except
for sex. Sex is about power. E. L.
James knows about the importance
of the power/sex dynamic. She gets
that the hottest thing about fucking
someones brains out is the psy-
chological chess game you had to
playand winto get there. Long
story short: E. L. James is a hero.
She is a humanitarianand the
Robin Hood of female libidos.
Afer zipping through the second
book, I was doing things I hadnt
done in years, like shaving all
the hairs o the back of my thighs,
closing the bathroom door when
I peed, and seducing my husband
with more than just I feel like
were supposed to be having sex.
I was insatiable. And by that,
I mean I wanted sex more than
twice a week.
Hot as things had become, some-
thing was still missing. Despite our
best eorts, we still werent like the
characters in the book. I was talk-
ing too much, and Jasons hitting
me over the head with a pillow felt
more like he was trying to suocate
me so he could go back to his iPad.
Christian and Ana also had things
that we didnt have. What is a sexual
deviant without toys? I thought one
day while taking photos of my labia
to send to him at work.
Admittedly, I go through phases
where I get super passionate about
something,
throw myself
one hundred
percent into
whatever it
is, and then
ditch the whole
thing a couple
of weeks later.
Knowing where
my overzealous
nature could
lead, I tried to
stay rational
as I sped into
the parking
lot of my local
sex store.
With deter-
mination, I walked past the sexy
schoolgirl outts and Pocket Rock-
ets and marched directly to the
hard-core shit. I was browsing the
bondage aisle, lling my arms with
weapons of mass seduction, when
I came upon something called a
spreader bar. Looking at the price,
I gasped. Three hundred bucks?
I have a whole dungeon to decorate!
Excuse me, a voice chimed
in behind me. Guiltily, I turned
around. It had to be so obvious from
the looks of me (nonthreatening
person with a wedding ring) and the
contents of my arms (bondage fuck-
fest) that I was reading Fify Shades.
Would you like a basket?
a salesgirl asked, like we were at
Whole Foods. I hate how calm sex-

shop workers are, as if sex were the
easiest thing to talk about in the
world. Im sure during training
they get coached in talking about
clits the way some people talk about
coee pots, but the rest of society
doesnt operate that way. Its stress-
ful to have someone look at me with
a straight face
and ask, Have
you ever tried
an ass egg?
By the end
of my super-
market sweep,
Id settled on
nipple clamps,
some reason-
ably priced cock
rings, two giant
vibrators, a
latex bodysuit,
and a blindfold.
On my way
to the register,
I noticed some
small orbs
sitting in a
case near the glass dildos. They
were Ben Wa balls. In Fify Shades,
Christian forces Ana to insert
similar balls into her vagina and
wear them to a black-tie event. Fun!
I thought, tossing a pair into my
basket of vices.
At home, I did what I always do
afer shoppingI ripped the tags
o everything and put it all on.
I danced around the room in pain,
trying to acclimate to my new
nipple clamps, then busted out
the strange balls and shoved them
inside my vagina. They were cold
and heavy and made me feel like
I had two soaked tampons in at
once. Feeling both pride and shame
that my vagina was wide enough
to t both balls, I tiptoed around
waiting to have some sort of Sting
Trudie Styler tantric explosion.
Just then, I heard the garage
door opening. My husband was
home! And was he in for a treat!
I threw a pair of boxers and a
tee shirt over my bondage gear
and ran downstairs to greet him.
The front door swung open, and
I was suddenly face-to-face with
my husband and an uptight Aryan
Youthlooking business acquain-
tance named Judd. Perhaps it was
the shock of seeing a stranger
when I had XXX-rated plans in
mind, perhaps it was my bounc-
ing down the stairs, or perhaps
my vagina was just that big, but at
that moment, my body decided it
was time to purge the balls. I stood
there, speech-
less, watching
my vagina turn
into a gum-
ball machine.
Bapbap. The
metal balls hit
the hardwood
and rolled into
the kitchen,
only to nd my
innocent house-
keeper, Lita.
Judd screamed
like hed just
witnessed a
home birth.
My husbands
jaw hung open
in horror as
I charged afer the orbs. Feels like
maybe this is a bad time, I heard
Judd whisper to Jason as I scam-
pered afer my Ben Wa babies.
By the time I got to the kitchen,
Lita already had one in hand. Oh!
You can just throw those in the
sink, I said, trying to play it cool.
I shamefully slunk back upstairs
and waited for Jason to come ask
me what was going on. I didnt see
him until three hours later, when he
walked in, holding the balls. Lita
was under the impression that
these could go in the dishwasher,
he said, smiling at me the way
people smile at dogs and old people.
Are you mad? I asked. No, he
said. Then he got in bed next to me
and pulled me close. You know
whats hotter than you doing
vagina parlor tricks for my friends?
What? I asked coyly. Everything,
he sighed, and then kissed me.
It was another phase, come and
gone. Our sex life returned to once
a week. Sure, theres the rare night
that I turn over in bed and wish
I were staring at anybody else. But
I think thats normal. And lets be
realwould anybody else be able to
shit my initials? I think not.
I stood there, speech less,
watching my vagina turn
into a gum-ball machine.

THE SKINNY
24/7-GORGEOUS SKIN
BY JESSICA MATLIN
By 2 p.m., your skin cells have already had a daypunching out free radicals, kicking UV rays
in the shins. Come bedtime, they still have a job ahead of them. The key to an A+
performance: understanding exactly whats happening and when, then syncing up your schedule.
IN THE MORNING
Like breakfast, your a.m. products
set you up for the entire day, says
NYC derm David Colbert, MD.
As you sleep, your body secretes
skin-mending beta endorphins and
growth hormones, says Amy
Wechsler, MD, a derm in NYC. These
steps enhance that repair cycle.
STEP 1: NIGHT SERUM
Postcleansing, apply
a p.m. repair serum.
Its thin, concentrated
formula absorbs
more deeply than
night cream to
boost cell renewal.
Este Lauder Advanced
Night Repair
Synchronized Recovery
Complex II, $62,
esteelauder.com
STEP 3: SUNSCREEN
Think of antioxidants
as lingerie (a crucial
under layer) and of
SPF as clothing:
Never leave the house
without it. Try a BB
cream, which offers
protection, hydration,
plus a hint of tint.
LOral Paris Silky
Sheer BB Face Lotion
SPF 30, $10, drugstores
STEP 2: ANTIOXIDANTS
Serums packed with
vitamins C and E or
green tea (three of the
most potent antioxi-
dants) neutralize free
radicals, which cause
fine lines and spots.
Origins A Perfect World
Skin Guardian With White
Tea, $54, origins.com
STEP 4: NIGHT CREAM
Skin constantly loses
water, even as you
sleep. Upgrade to a
richer cream to pre-
vent dehydration, plus
lock in the layers you
previously applied.
Algenist Genius Cream,
$110, algenist.com
STEP 2: RETINOL
(OR PRESCRIPTION
RETIN-A)
UV rays weaken this
vitamin-A derivative
essential for optimal
cell turnover (skins
natural exfoliation
method)so save it
for the evening.
Neutrogena Rapid Tone
Repair Dark Spot
Corrector, $21, drugstores
STEP 4: MIDDAY
MOISTURE
By 2 p.m., the mois-
turizer you applied in
the morning will have
lost its power. Keep a
hydrating spritz (this
one has glycerin and
aloe) on hand to rev
up skin after lunch.
Clinique Moisture
Surge Face Spray, $22,
clinique.com
STEP 3: EYE
CREAM
Thicker is
better when
it comes to
quenching this
thin-skinned
area, prone
to dryness
and wrinkles.
Talika Eye
Dream, $58,
dermstore.com
STEP 1:
ANTIPUFF EYE GEL
Fluids collect when
youve spent hours
lying horizontally.
A caffeinated cream
(in roller-ball form)
flattens them.
Olay Bright On Schedule!
Eye Awakening Cream,
$15, drugstore.com

RAMP UP
YOUR EFFORTS
MAKE A CONNECTION
BRING IT HOME
And If at First You Dont SucceedStay Positive A young woman I met, Sruti, had a solid rsum and had
been doing nothing but job searching for months, yet nothing was working out. In hindsight, she wonders if employers sensed her
misery and fear. It was only when she started volunteering that she found something to be excited about. Three weeks later, she got a
job. The takeaway? Continue to grow as a personit will help you stay optimistic and will develop your strengths as a job candidate.
Do Your Homework
Once you land an interview,
make a list of what you like
about the job and the com-
pany. Research the company
and the latest industry trends,
and be ready with questions
to ask and ideas to pitch.
During your interview, speak
slowly to project condence.
Shift Your Mind-Set
Recent graduates often make
the mistake of concentrat-
ing on what they want from a
company rather than on what
they can offer. Throughout
your interview, focus on the
organizations needs above
your own. Also, when youre
describing your accomplish-
ments, it helps to use com-
munal language: We were
awarded a $500,000 grant,
and my role on the team was
to write the proposal.
Follow Up
Post-interview, jot every thing
down. Who did you meet?
What did you discuss? Using
your notes, send an e-mail
thank-you within 24 hours to
everyone you met with. Reiter-
ate why youre interested in
the job. Its a bonus if you can
point to an article of interest
that continues the discussion
from your interview. If you
dont hear right back (and you
often wont), wait a week and
reach out again.
Know Who You Are
Job seekers should have an
elevator pitch, a 30-second
rundown of your most relevant
skills. Mine is Im Mindy Levy.
I work in human resources at a
strategy- and technology-con-
sulting company. I also moon-
light as an executive coach,
helping people get unstuck
so they can pursue their ambi-
tions. The idea is to introduce
yourself quickly and convey
the kind of job youre looking
for if the opportunity arises at
a party, a sporting eventeven
in an actual elevator.
Clear Your Cache
Did you know that 75 percent
of recruiters say their hiring
process includes researching
candidates online? So check
your social-media photos and
posts and hide or delete any
questionable oneseven
if your hair looks really good.
Create a LinkedIn prole,
asking former employers and
professors to provide testi-
monials, and join school and
industry groups on the site.
Go Beyond Google
Find jobs that arent listed
online by identifying people
in your extended network
friends and colleagues of
your family, teachers, and
friendswho have jobs that
youre interested in. Make
a list of people you want
to connect with, and see if
anyone in your network
knows them. Dont be afraid
to try something bold like
getting their attention on
Twitter or LinkedIn.
Use Power Words
Many recruiters use special
software to help them discover
talent, so pay attention to the
job postings you are applying
for and use keywords from
them in your rsum, such as
technical skills (PowerPoint),
soft skills (teamwork), and
degrees (BA, CPA). Using the
right keywords will optimize
the chances a recruiter will
nd you. Create multiple ver-
sions of your rsum tailored
to particular jobs or employers.
And proofread each version
as if your job depends on it
because it might.
Apply!
Studies show that if a woman
meets 60 percent of the
requirements on a job listing,
shell consider herself unquali-
ed, but a man who fullls
the same percentage will
send in an application. If you
see a listing that appeals to
you, even if you lack some of
the skills, go for it. This is not
cheating; its competing.
Make E-Mails Personal
Dont address introductory
e-mails or cover letters To
whom it may concern. Instead,
identify the best internal
contact. Look for common
ground with the person youre
addressingif you were
referred by someone in the
company or if you share an
alma mater or hometown
with the reader, mention it
up front. Then tell a personal
story about your work
experience, volunteering
activities, or outside passions
that explains why youre
well-suited to the position.

GET-AHEAD GUIDE
Be Approachable
I dont wear a doctors white coat in my
oce because I want patients to feel like
they are coming to talk to a friend and
can tell me anything. You can convey
warmth and approachability in any
line of workkeeping personal photos
and mementos at your desk is a great
way to humanize yourself so colleagues
feel comfortable sharing sensitive
information with you.
Establish a Rapport
If you need to glean sensitive informa-
tion from someone, start by asking easy,
open-ended questions to make her feel
comfortable. I always begin an appoint-
ment by asking my patients, How are
you? and Whats new? This is where
typically I would hear, Oh, I quit my
job or I have a new boyfriend. You get
really helpful intel when you just let
people talk. Once you have that bond, its
so much easier to broach tough topics
and have a productive conversation.
Pick a Good Moment
Dont sit on bad news, and never
e-mail or outsource the delivery to
someone else. If Im calling a patient,
I say, Do you have a second? Is this
a good time? I want her to be able to
ask questions or cry without feeling
awkward or embarrassed because
shes at her desk. When meeting in
person, nd a private, nonintrusive
place and strategic moment. If Im
going to ask a patient how many sex
partners she has had or whether shes
been using protection, I will literally
wait until Im sitting on the stool
between her legs. Whatever your
workplace, a more intimate setting
yields a more honest answer.
Say It Clearly
When people are upset, they dont really
hear what youre saying and they get
confused. Be very straightforward about
whats happening. I might say, I have
the results back. Your BRCA genetic test
is positive or You denitely have been
exposed to genital herpes. I condense
the big picture into a one-liner, then
hand over a piece of paper on which Ive
written the specic next steps.
Look for a
Silver Lining
Emphasize any positives
associated with the bad news
maybe you highlight that its
great you caught the issue

information as a way
to motivate change.

keeps your recipient

Q How did your familys
struggles shape your career?
A Like a lot of families, we had our
ups and downs. In the 1960s, my
daddy was working selling carpet-
ing for Montgomery Ward. When
I was 12, he had a heart attack. He
was ill for a long time, and we lost
our family car and almost lost our
house. My mom went to work at
Sears, answering phones. I learned
that good people can work hard
but hit a bad patch and their lives
can be turned upside down. My
whole life has been spent on how
we make ourselves safer by build-
ing an independent financial life.
Q Was it a hard choice to drop
out of college to get married?
A It should have been, but it
wasnt. My mother had taught me
about the importance of finding a
my husband, Bruce, and I love
sharing fried clams and having
a beer at our favorite spot,
the Summer Shack in North
Cambridge.
Q Youve championed banking
reform. Why is it needed?
A Banks were once places to hold
money and were very careful in
lending to finance families as they
built a futurebought homes,
bought cars, took out student loans.
But the business model changed,
and too many lenders sold preda-
tory mortgages, dangerous credit
cards, and other tricky products.
When people couldnt pay, the
whole thing crashed.
Q Whats the lesson for women?
A No matter how good a deal
sounds, if your name goes on the
bottom line, you need to under-
stand it and be sure youll be able
to pay. You are responsible for your-
self forever. Forever.

good provider, so when my
boyfriend proposed, I said yes in a
heartbeat. I was still just a kid, and
I didnt know what was coming
in life. [Later] I persuaded my
husband that it made sense for me
to finish school. Then I went to law
school and got a job teaching law.
Q Was it difficult balancing
motherhood and your career?
A It was one of the hardest things
Ive ever done. I loved teaching,
but every day that I went to work,
I carried the worry that I was
hurting my kids because I wasnt
at home with them. Even years
later, I think about trying to get
out of the house in the morn-
ings or picking up an exhausted
toddler at day care and I feel my
stomach tighten up.
Q How did you make it work?
A I was luckymy Aunt Bee came
to live with us so I could keep
teaching. She walked away from
her life so she could come fix
mine. Even so, I ended up getting
a divorce. I put together a new
life as a single mother, until
I remarried in 1980. To this day,

BREAK
OUT OF
YOUR
COMFORT
ZONE
Sometimes, something scary
stands between you and the
thing you want. Jillian Michaels tells
you how to push through it.
YOUR
BREAKTHROUGH
WORKSHEET
Try it with small
challenges and build
up to bigger ones.
THE CHALLENGE
Take an
improv class.
WHY
I love to make
people laugh
and dream of
being on SNL.
REWARD FOR
TAKING ACTION
A night out
with people
who make
me laugh.
SCENARIO A
I stay in a job I dont like
and wonder, What if?
SCENARIO B
I bomb. Comedy is out,
but work presentations
will be a breeze now.
FIGURE OUT YOUR WHY
When I ask people why they want to lose weight, they say,
I want to get healthy. Thats a blanket answer with no real
meaning, so it wont provide any real motivation. You have to
define what healthy is to you. Is it looking hot in skinny jeans
getting noticed instead of feeling overlooked? Is it about avoiding
health problems youve seen in your family? Youll never tolerate
the howthe tough things you have to do to achieve your goal
without feeling a deep, emotional link to the why.
BE NICE
I used to give my 4-year-old daughter a time-out when she didnt
listen. That worked okay. But when I built a reward system for
listening, things improved dramatically! So treat yourself as
you would someone you love. That grad-school application
not coming along? Dont berate yourself or deprive yourself of
sleep or playtime. Instead, reward yourself with something like
an episode of Orphan Black for every question you complete.
Love and respect yourself and you will flourish.
When I started planning
my rst live show, Maximize
Your Life, going onstage
seemed terrifying. But
I really wanted a direct
connection where I could
talk to people, look them
in the eye, and hug them.
So I studied, rehearsed,
surrounded myself with a
great tour teamand it was
as terrifying as Id feared!
But it keeps getting better
now Im hooked.
Its been another
lesson that the amount of
happiness and meaning in
your life directly relates to
how you manage fear and
vulnerability. You cant get
the promotion unless you
ask for it. You cant have
better sex until you are open
with your partner. And it
doesnt matter whether the
hard thing you have to do is
physical or emotionalhard
is hard and fear is fear.
When I want to do
something that scares
me, I walk through these
steps. Try itthen have
that conversation, sign
up for that coding class,
start training for your rst
5K. And then enjoy the
sweet victory when your
risk-taking work pays o.
SCENARIO C
I kill it! Im on my way to
achieving my dream.
MANAGE THE FEAR
Psych yourself up for a challenge by thinking through the end
game. Imagine three possible scenarios: (A) You do nothing,
(B) you do it and it goes badly, or (C) you do it and have success.
Play that out and youll see that you have to go for it. Say its
time to have a talk with a new guy about making things more
official. Youre ready for the real deal but nervous! In scenario
A, you chicken out. But keeping quiet makes you more resentful,
resulting in your original fearyou break up. In scenario B, you
talk and dont get the answer you want, but you can move on to
new guys and possibilities. Last, C: You do it and you get the
real, honest relationship youre looking for! You get your why.

presented by
LATOYA PALEY, 33, HOUSTON, TX
When I was turning 30, I took a hard look at my life and real-
ized I was in a rut. I worked all the time and had no social life.
I wanted an adventure where I could use my business skills.
So I applied to the Peace Corps and was placed in the former
Soviet republic of Georgia, where I worked for two years help-
ing small businesses set up databases and apply for grants.
I expected to get a lot of attention because Im American,
but I didnt realize it would be because Im African-American.
Apparently, the locals hadnt seen many black people in their
lives. I couldnt believe the way they stared at me, grabbed
my dreadlocks, or tried to touch my skin like I was an animal.
Theyd call out black girl while I jogged. One colleague admit-
ted that he was surprised afer meeting me. Youre not violent.
Youre educated, and you speak well, hed said.
I would have been insulted if someone had said that to me
at home, but I realized that part of my job was to be a cultural
ambassador and try to break stereotypes. Still, the attention
overwhelmed me at times, and I could stand being out in pub-
lic for only short periods. When my mom came to visit, she felt
so uncomfortable when a small crowd stopped to take photos
of us at a bus stop that she wanted to hide out in the house.
When youre working abroad, youre going to encounter peo-
ple with dierent views. You try to stay open-minded and man-
age the best you can. I still recommend the Peace Corps, which
is a great program for anyone who wants to be immersed in
the culture of another country. But they cant prepare you for
everything, especially if youre a woman of color. You have to
trust your own gut to gure out when you have a chance to
teach someone and when you have to walk away.
Paley during her Peace
Corps stint in Georgia.
JENNIFER
TWARDOWSKI, 27,
BERKELEY, CA
After graduating from
college, I didnt like
any of the teaching
jobs I was offered, so
I decided to go abroad
and teach English.
I loved the idea of going
to an exotic culture in
East Asia, where I could
see tea plantations
and Buddhist temples.
I signed up with a
private school in South
Korea that would cover
my housing and health
insurance and pay me
$2,200 a month.
Then I met my
students. By the time
they arrived in the after-
noon after a full day at
school, they were fried
and didnt want to learn
English. In one class,
the 6-year-old boys ran
around in circles and
refused to sit down. I
asked the director for
help, but as soon as
she left, theyd goof off
again. I never imag-
ined that the language
barrier would make my
job so hard. In another
class, several 10-year-
old girls threatened
that if I didnt let them
play cards, they would
tell their parents to
send them to a different
school. I was scared Id
lose my job and end up
homeless. I was in over
my head and dreaded
going to work every day.
Several mornings a
week, Id have to teach
at another school across
town, and the director
gave me a bike to ride
therein the middle of
winter! Naturally, I was
sick all the time.
I eventually trans-
ferred to a better-run
school, which provided
a Korean coteacher who
kept the kids in line.
But I had to reimburse
my former director for
my airfare and pay a
recruitment fee for
breaking my contract.
My advice: Know how
many students youll be
teaching and consider
only schools that have a
selective hiring process.
Its reassuring when
they ask about your
teaching and classroom
management and want
you to have a U.S.
teaching credential or
ESL certication.
The easier it is for you to
get the job, the worse
the program probably is.

When I arrived in Oman
to teach English, I had
no desire to date. I just
wanted to experience

rst week, I met a guy,
the friend of another
teacher, at a gathering
at a bar. We talked for

No one else seemed to
notice, but it struck me

We took a drive to
the mountains for a rst
date, and I was sur-
prised when he told me,
I really care for you. It
was intense, but he was
charming and sweet,
and within a month,
I was falling in love.
He was 10 years

I planned to apply to

LAUREN JULIFF, 25, LONDON, ENGLAND
Afer college, my boyfriend and I had plans to travel around
Asia, but we broke up. So I went by myselfI didnt want to
have any regrets. The trip went great until I arrived exhausted
one night in Luang Prabang, Laos. When a hotel scout met my
ferry with promises of Wi-Fi and air conditioning, I followed.
I got a room, but the doorknob was broken and I acciden-
tally locked myself inside. An hour later, someone heard my
screams, and I was moved to the only room lef, one with no
win dows and a light bulb hanging by a string. When a cock-
roach darted across my pillow, I ran outside and sat against
the wall, crying. It was 2 a.m., too late to nd another hotel.
I was grateful when two Dutch guys coming back from
a night out oered to let me sleep on the oor of their room.
I know it sounds crazy, but when youve been traveling a lot,
you form a tight-knit community with other backpackers.
I fell asleep instantlyuntil I woke up with one guy curled up
behind me, groping my butt and breasts. I pushed him away,
but he pulled me harder against him. I screamed and ran out,
then sat in a park in front of the hotel until sunrise.
I wish I hadnt found out the hard way to be cautious about
trusting strangers. But that experience didnt wreck my love of
travel. As a blogger for NeverEndingFootsteps.com, I encour-
age women to travel alone. Read hostel reviewsespecially by
fellow solo womenand make reservations ahead of time.
1. Research unsafe
areas at Travel.State

2. Ask hotel staff which
spots Westerners like,
make coffee dates
through LinkedIn, or

to practice English
by posting an ad near
a university. Always
meet in public.
3. Watch local women.
Do they jog alone?
Talk to men in public?
Follow their lead.
4. Have a reliable local
contact, like a landlord
or program adminis-
trator, who can get you
medical care.
5. Designate someone
who can travel to you
in an emergency.
Put info about your

6. Consider travel

I GOT MY
HEART BROKEN
You may feel at home, but remember that youre not. Young women get into trouble because they arent paying
enough attention to local customs, says Sheryl Hill, who cofounded the ClearCause Foundation to promote travel
safety after her son Tyler died a preventable death from dehydration in Japan in 2007. Her advice:

It
doesnt happen very often, but every once
in a great while a new weight-loss product
comes along that really gets me excited. And, the
fact that I get to tell you about it before The Doctors
and QVC feature it on their shows is icing on the
cake! The product is called Vysera-CLS, and,
unlike your run-of-the-mill diet pill that merely
helps you lose weight (while following a strict
low-calorie diet), Vysera can actually reshape your
entire body... dropping inch upon inch of unsightly
fat from your waist, hips, thighs and tummy...
even if youre eating more than 2,000 calories a
day! Some people are calling it a miracle pill.
However, this miracle pill is backed by serious
clinical research published in the highly respected
British Journal of Nutrition.
The Power to Reshape Your
Entire Body
While you and I only care about results (and
the results are incredible), the scientists Ive
spoken to are even more excited about how this
compound works.
So here we go. In a randomized, double-blind,
placebo-controlled clinical trial, study subjects
took the compound along with their main meal
of the day. Thirty minutes later, they had a
signifcantly lower percentage of blood glucose
increment from baseline, a smaller increase in
C-peptide and, forty-fve to one hundred twenty
minutes after they ate, subjects also experienced
a smaller insulin increase compared to placebo.
Additionally, with respect to time, researchers
observed a signifcant effect on the hunger
hormone ghrelin as well as on satiety and desire
to eat. The end result was that the specialized
compound was shown to cause a signifcant
reduction in body weight, fat mass, BMI,
adipose tissue thickness, and waist/hip/thigh
circumference while maintaining lean body mass.
So Here It Is In Plain English:
People who took this incredible compound not
only lost weight, but lost a signifcant amount of
squishy, fabby, unattractive body fat from those
hard-to-target places we all hate: our hips, thighs
and butt. It also caused a signifcant reduction
in the amount of fat around the waist (yes, that
means you can start saying goodbye to your love
handles), helping study subjects achieve that
tight, sexy, frm fgure we all dream of. And the
best part? The compound did all this on 2,000
to 2,200 calories a day! In other words, without
requiring anybody to follow a low-calorie diet
or work out for hours every day! Think of it this
way... its sort of like eating a whole donut, but
only absorbing a fraction of the calories. Hows
that for amazing? (Of course, we dont advocate
eating a donut as a meal, and this example is used
for illustrative purposes only.)
Where Can You Get It?
A company here in the USA has acquired the
patented compound and added a proprietary
mood-elevating, feel-good energy component to
help eliminate diet fatigue and get you through
the day with a smile on your face (another added
beneft). This unique formula has been exclusively
licensed to Bremenn Clinical under the trade name

Its sort of like eating a whole donut, but

As incredible as it sounds,
groundbreaking research has just

waist size, hip size, thigh and buttock
circumference, belly bulge, and...
last but not least... cause a signicant
loss of actual fat mass from all over your
body. Has the miracle pill nally arrived?

BACON
MEATBALLS
Bacon makes me end-
lessly happy, although
I am not loving the
bacon everything hipster
train. I do not appreci-
ate people loving bacon
because loving bacon
is cool. Loving bacon
is a serious thing! You
feel it in your soul. And
later, your heart, when
it inevitably explodes.
1 lb. hardwood smoked
bacon
12 oz. ground beef,
80% lean preferred
8 oz. ground pork
2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. smoked paprika
2 tsp. dry oregano
tsp. ground fennel
tsp. freshly cracked
black pepper
tsp. (or more, to taste)
crushed red pepper
1 egg
Cut bacon into 1-inch
pieces. Pulse in a food
processor until it is evenly
ground. In a large bowl,
combine bacon with remain-
ing ingredients. Scoop into
1-inch meatballs, making
sure not to compress
while shaping. Place on a
parchment-lined pan, and
chill, uncovered, for at least
two hours. Later, heat a non-
stick skillet over medium
heat. Working in batches,
add meatballs and brown
thoroughly on all sides.
Bake at 400 degrees until
meatballs reach an internal
temperature of 160 degrees,
about 10 to 15 minutes.

From bikinis to red-carpet gowns, Chrissy Teigen makes
sexy look easy. But sexiness comes from within
and loving life. Spend a night at home with the model
who eats what she wants, says what she thinks, and
never takes anything too seriously, including herself.
i
i
i
around her open kitchen in her spacious midcentury modern
home, Chrissy Teigen stirs Tom Yum Gai chicken soup, drops
pork and vegetable egg rolls into a sizzling wok, and checks
on the garlic pork ribs roasting in the oven. Overseeing the
traditional Thai meal is her mother, who moved to Los Angeles
from Thailand a year ago with Teigens father. Until recently
the couple had lived with their daughter and her husband,
R & B icon John Legend. If we werent making Thai food,
I would be doing all the cooking, Teigen says, bending over a
pot and inhaling deeply. Ill come in from a long ight and go
straight to the grocery store. I love cooking for my man. John
is very successful, so people sometimes think that I am mooch-
ing o him. But we take care of each other in dierent ways.
The 28-year-old Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover
starwhose new MTV show, Snack-O, premieres in Julyis
perfectly on-trend in a sleeveless chion top, David Lerner leg-
gings, and knee-high Givenchy boots. She shows o some pierc-
ings she had done earlier in the day: ve delicate diamond studs
and rose-gold accents circling her lobe and upper ear. Then she
oers me a glass of wine as we watch the indulgent meal come
together. I always get to eat what I want, because if I dont, I go
insane, she says. If youre going to choose to do something like
the Paleo Diet, then you choose not to enjoy your nights out.
No one would ever accuse Teigen of not enjoying herself.
Thats evident from her hilariously blunt Twitter account and
her food blog, So Delushious, where shes posted F-bomb-laden
recipes, retorts to her haters, romantic honeymoon photos, and
at least one naked sele of her drinking in the bathtub. I have
way more female followers than I do men, she reveals. Men
are very tough, very critical of me. I think they expect you to
basically just be a picture. They dont want to hear you speak.
Women, I love. Its amazing to me, because I am a swimsuit
model; Im half-naked. I just love the fact that women love me,
and it makes me love them so much back.
While dinner is cooking, she leads me into her bedroom, a
Zen lair with a low, king-size bed piled with pillows and a wall
of windows overlooking her backyard. Close on her heels are
two portly bulldogs, Pooey and Puddy, and a French bulldog,
Pippa. Still wearing her boots, Teigen plops onto her bed and
shrugs as Puddy climbs right up beside her, settling onto the
pillows and whining at her at-screen TV. Sorry, he gets very
emotional over the Sarah McLachlan commercials, she jokes.
It is Teigens fun and funny personality that rst attracted
Legend back in 2006, when Teigen, then 21 and working as
a catalog model, was cast in a music video for his hit single,
Stereo. Please dont look it up on YouTube! she cries. I was
doing this fake model-y dancing with the most dead eyes youve
ever seen in a human. Regardless, she made an impression o-
camera. I walked into Johns dressing room to meet him, and

1. Whisk 6 to 8 eggs with a
generous splash of heavy
cream, and season heavily
with salt and pepper.
2. Toss enough butter in
a nonstick pan to make

3. Use a heat-proof silicone
spatula to stir in eggs over
very low heat. Keep every-
thing moving, making an
all-around-the-pan circular
scrape, followed by a
push-push-push of the

the center. Repeat about
20 minutes, until eggs
are done but still creamy

he was ironing in his underwear, she recalls. I said, You do
your own ironing!? He said, Of course I do. I gave him a hug.
Afer chatting throughout the 14-hour shoot, the two feasted
on In-N-Out burgers later that night at his hotel. Im not going
to lie. We hooked up, she admits, but then Legend headed out
on tour. She spent the next year texting and talking to him on
the phone, trying to ignore pictures of him on red carpets with
other women on his arm. I let him be himself for a while, she
says. The worst thing you can do is try to lock someone like
that down early on, then have them think, Theres so much
more out there. I played it cool for a long time. Never once did
I ask, What are we? Marriage was never my goal, because Ive
never been very traditional. I was just happy to be with him.
She still is. One of the coolest things is how supportive and
happy and proud he is of my success lately, she says. Im with
someone who is totally secure in himself. Hes not trying to be
anything other than what he is. The condence he has brings
it to me. That extends to their sex life, which is fueled by good
communication and a glass of wine, she says. Were by no
means freaky-deaky, but lets just say, were open to things.
Were very okay with PDA. When we go to a restaurant, he loves
when I wear a dress, so he can do some upper-thigh rubbing.
I would love to see more husbands and wives making out!
Afer texting her husband to make sure its okay (Its very rare
I would ask his [permission] for anything), she reveals the
craziest place theyve had sex: We were on our way to Thailand
to see my parents, ying commercial rst-class. We were under
a blanket. We werent even in one of those pod things. I feel like
we should get a trophy for that. Clutching her forehead, she
says, Mom and Dad are going to nail me for this!
Just as Teigens mother is calling us to dinner, Legend walks
through the door. Dropping a duel bag onto the oor, he gath-
ers his wife into his arms and gives her a warm kiss. She claps
a hand to her ear and winces as he grazes her fresh piercings.
What do you think? she asks.
Theyre cute! he responds.
Cute? Cute? Teigen responds with mock horror. I just
endured horrible pain and you think theyre cute? Laughing,
Legend grabs her around the waist. Sorry, theyre sexy.
The family gathers around the kitchen island, chatting about
their plansTeigen and Legend are headed to Ohio that night
for his mothers 60th birthdaywhile enjoying the best Thai
food Ive ever eaten. Teigen takes none of it for granted. I got so
lucky that I met Brooklyn Decker and she [hooked me up with]
Sports Illustrated, she says. I got so lucky that I met John, who
propelled my career. Im not delusional: that denitely helped.
But I dont want to be thought of as just Johns wife, so Im try-
ing to make a name without it, which is hard in its own way.
Licking her ngers, she nishes the last of the ribs and brings
her dish to the sink. Even three years ago, I never dreamed of
this life, she says, smiling at her husband and the dogs who
are sitting at her feet, waiting for scraps to drop. Its unreal.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE
A STAR? My dads an actor, and he took
me on location once when he was
shooting a film. He must have been really
hungover, because his assistant came,
woke him up, pulled him out of bed, gave
him a cup of coffee, ran him a bath, then
got him dressed and put him in a car. I was

WHY DID YOU NAME YOUR ALBUM
SHEEZUS? Because Kanye West, who
Im a massive fan of, had an album called
Yeezus. I respect him for many different
reasons, not just his music but also as a
personality. What makes him Yeezus to
me is that he is always open, honest, true
to his word, and doesnt give a hmm-mmm

Yeezus, then I sure as hell will be Sheezus.

JUNE 2014 | COSMOPOLITAN 153
EDITED BY MARINA KHIDEKEL
We are totally
sort of together.
1
Theres an awkward pause every time one of you introduces the other. Nothing screams Its complicated
like muttering, This is myumJosh.
2
A hot guy asks for your number, but you feel weird about giving it.
When you deny a smart, funny dude because of your sort-of-boo, its time to figure that ish out.
3
His tooth-
brush at your place has been joined by boxers, razors, andIron Man paraphernalia?! Hes practically a room-
mate at this point, but sure, youre keeping it casual.
4
You could identify his junk in a lineup, but you wonder
if other girls could too. You have the right to know if hes sleeping around, and vice versa!
5
Youve spent
every weekend together for the past nine months, except when his parents are in town. Sure, meeting Mom is
scary, but nine months? You couldve married and dumped Kris Humphries in that stretch. With that amount
of together time under your belt, surely you can spend 15 minutes figuring out whats up between you two.

SO YOURE
READY FOR
THE DTR
TALK
Just remember: Wanting to
know where you stand in a
relationship doesnt make you
clingy or crazy. It just means
you want to know if you should
stop collecting numbers when
you go out on the weekends.
OMG!
That did
NOT
go well!
Chalk this one up
to a losshis loss.
There could be a
number of reasons
why it didnt work
out, but none of them
are worth your
obsessing over and
analyzing into a fine
powder of agony.
The best thing you
can do after a bad
DTR is whip out your
cutest Beyonc-
channeling jeans
and let the swarm
of eligible Jay-Zs vie
for your affection.
Wait,
it totally
did!
Hey, girl, way to
successfully D that
R! Now that youre
on the same page,
enjoy the newfound
bliss of introducing
each other at
parties with no
awkward weirdness
whatsoever.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT AND WHAT
YOU DONT WANT. If defining the relation-
ship were a one-way street (which, obvi-
ously, it isnt), what would your dream
outcome be? Even if youre not necessar-
ily looking for a label, go into the conver-
sation knowing what you will and wont
settle for. If one of those scenarios is a
deal breaker (think: one of you wants to
be in an open relationship while the oth-
ers trying to put this on lockdown), you
may need to walk.
BE SOBER AND FULLY CLOTHED. It may
seem like downing the better part of
a bottle of Sancerre will take the edge
off, but being drunk only escalates
emotions and will (we promise) make
things worse. Same goes for attempt-
ing the talk post-sexthat naked
cuddle session should be reserved for
deciding where youll get brunch
tomorrow, not if hes willing to attend
your stepsisters wedding in August.
GO STRAIGHT TO THE SOURCE. There
are really only two people who can
define what youre doing: you and him.
So dont crowdsource, dont blog about
it, dont query his friends or consult
your horoscopejust ask him. It can be
tempting to do some field reporting
first, but ultimately, the only thing
thats going to get you real answers
is a face-to-face talk with the boy.
WHILE YOURE DOING IT
BE DIRECT. Subtle hints never work,
says Margret L., 23, of Milwaukee, Wiscon-
sin. (Oh, weird, this RSVP card says
Significant Others Welcome. Hmm.)
Entering the conversation, you both should
know that a DTR is going down.
KEEP IT PLAYFUL. Dont feel like you have
to lead with the grim reaper of conversation
starters: We need to talk. This convo can
be lighthearted, so lead with a joke, like:
Whats warm and fuzzy but still confus-
ing-as-eff all over? Answer: This relation-
ship! (Insert 90s-sitcom laugh track here.)
SAY WHAT YOU NEED TO SAY. Time to be
articulate! If you initiated the talk, go first
explaining how you feelthat way, you
wont get caught up in what he says. Sure,
its tempting to see what hes thinking
firstbut then you might be left with
a definition youre not comfortable with.
LISTEN. Be ready to hear him out and
hell be more likely to give you an honest
answer. And remember: Just because you
want to define the relationship doesnt
mean it needs to be black and white. Just
make sure that if youre going to continue,
youre on the same page.

from vaginal penetration alone.
Oral is the only way I get off with a
partner that doesnt require extra
stimulation either with a toy or my
own hands, explains Dani, 28.
So if oral sex is so fantasticand
it is!we should all be enthusiasti-
cally performing and receiving all
the time, right? And yet, a Cosmopol-
itan survey of 1,000 women revealed
that nearly half reverse the order
of third base and the home run
and have intercourse with a new
sex partner before escalating to oral.
Meanwhile, those who have oral
first are divided by how much they
do: 33 percent give and receive oral
before moving on to intercourse,
while 23 percent only givehaving
a partner go down on them comes
later, if it happens at all.
While Id like to think theyre
consciously saving the best for last,
only 17 percent say they find receiv-
ing oral more satisfying than
intercourse, a figure I find some-
what shocking, given the whole cal-
ligraphy with a thick Magic Marker
thing. Even the famously well-
endowed porn star of yore Ron Jer-
emy once noted, More women
have gotten off with my tongue
At the time, vagina-mouth
seemed to work fine. But its a waste:
Mouths have vastly more potential
than vaginal mimicry, and oral
sex is not a step down from real
sexits the ne plus ultra of sex,
more intense, intimate, and versa-
tile than any other act. Oral sex isnt
the lesser sex. Its the best sex.
Oral sex isnt simply more inti-
mate than its traditional, first-base
predecessor: sex with your mouth is
more fine-tuned, more versatile
than the other varieties. With your
mouth (and tongue and lips and
teeth), you can kiss, suck, lick,
probe, swirl, stroke, and nibble in
an infinite variety of ways, rhythms,
and speeds. And oral has other
advantages to hands and other
parts: tongues are never impotent.
Mouths are always wet. Making
love with a penis is like trying to
write calligraphy with a thick Magic
Marker, Ian Kerner, PhD, laments
in his book She Comes First. The
tongue, on the other hand, is under
our direct control, has no time con-
straints, and can be manipulated
with expert precision. No wonder so
many women report having an eas-
ier time orgasming from oral than
ITS NOT JUST THIRD BASE ANYMORE. GET READY TO GIVEAND GETTHE BEST ORAL OF YOUR LIFE.

than with my penis.
So whats holding back women
from receiving? For many, the aver-
sion is mental. The downside of the
intense intimacy oral provides is
self-consciousness: 42 percent of
women surveyed report feeling self-
conscious always or sometimes
when receiving oral. Another 18
percent worry they take too long to
finish. Twenty-one percent worry
about how they smell. Sixteen per-
cent worry about how they taste, and
8 percent worry whether their lady
parts are pretty enough.
But these worries are, if under-
standable, unfounded. In his study
of men who perform oral on women,
Kerner found that a majority really
enjoy it and often report enjoying the
scent and taste of going down on a
woman. As a 25-year-old man
recently put it to me, The first time
I did it was with my college girl-
friend, and I just knew I wanted to
kiss her everywhere. It's that feeling
where you just want to, like, con-
sume every single part of her.
I used to worry, says Elizabeth,
28. I was like, Wait! Im sweaty!
But the guy I was with didnt care,
so I let go of my fears about being
fresh. I hadnt shaved in days, and
he didnt care about that either.
I recall being self-conscious the
first time a guy went down on me.
It lasted approximately 0.5 second,
until I lost the ability to think any-
thing other than this feels good.
In the end, thats really
all it comes down to,
right? Oral sex feels good.
Get as much as you can.
The first time I got instructions on how to give a blow job
from a summer-camp friend one grade and two bra sizes
ahead of meI was told to imagine my mouth as a vagina.
Since the ultimate goal (at camp and for some time after)
is a home run, according to the baseball-diamond metaphor
of sex, oral sex was merely third base, one stop short, some-
thing that doesnt even really count as sex.

Heres the basic rule to giving a great
blow job: use your mouth (obviously)
and your hands. Your mouth is going to
provide the sensation (and for him, the
all-important visual!), but your hands
are going to do a lot of the work.
SO FOR A STARTER BLOW JOB,
TRY THIS: Take the head into your
mouth and squeeze, lick, swirl like you
would a soft-serve cone. Meanwhile,
use your hands to grip, squeeze, and
stroke the length of his penis. Dont just

164 COSMOPOLITAN | JUNE 2014 SEND YOUR GUY-RELATED DILEMMA TO ASKHIMANYTHING@COSMOPOLITAN.COM.
Q Do men notice when we
buy new lingerie? Ive bought
a few (expensive!) sheer
nighties and underwear sets,
but my guy rips them off and
drops em on the floor like
he does with my everyday
underwear. Whats the deal?
A Let me first say this: Your guy
will never appreciate your lingerie
nearly as much as you appreciate it.
What he will appreciate, however,
is the idea of your lingerie. Its a
huge turn-on to know you bought
something super hot to wear just
for him, but you need to inform him
of this ahead of time. So if youre
out, whisper in his ear that youre
wearing something new and hot
underneath your clothes. He will be
unable to think of anything else
until he gets you home, at which
point he will pausebrieflyto
appreciate your expensive lingerie.
A good guy friend of mine told me that when I go out, Im
not getting hit on because I give off a desperate vibe, like
Im hunting. What does he mean, and what can I do to put
out a better vibe that will help me meet a good guy?
A If you focus on something as undefinable as a desperate vibe, youll
destroy your self-confidence. Focus instead on concrete ways you can look
confident while also conveying that youre open to being approached. Dress
in a way that makes you feel best about yourselfdont worry about it being
sexy. Go out with one or two female friends, scan the crowd once in a while,
and if you lock eyes with a cute guy, return his stare for a second before look-
ing away. Youll get hit on, but even if you dont, screw it. Enjoy being with
your friends, which, by the way, will make guys want to come talk to you.
A How are you trying to turn the
hookup into a relationship? I have a
hunch that one way youre doing it is
by being agreeable all the time,
which means not saying anything
when the guy decides hes a porn
star and finishes on your face with-
out so much as a Yo, heads up!
Maybe you found that arousing, in
which case, great. Or you may have
found it offensive, in which case I
Uh, excuse
you.
The guy Im hooking up with, um,
nished on my face without asking,
and when I told my best guy friend,
he said that dudes do that only when
they dont respect a girl. I was trying
to turn this hookup into something
more. Is my guy friend right?
LOVE ADVICE FROM OUR
GUY GURU, KY HENDERSON
hope you said, What the eff are you
doing?! and rubbed your face all
over his face. Regardless, the most
important issue here is finding out
where you stand. Tell him, Im hav-
ing fun hooking up with you, but
Im finding myself wanting some-
thing more. How do you feel? If he
wants more as well, terrific. If he
doesnt, move on. If you dont, youll
only get hurt worse as time goes on.

YOURE
NOT
NEEDY
(YOURE JUST
WITH THE
WRONG GUY)
I ONCE DATED A GUY ILL CALL LEWIS* WHO WAS, INITIALLY, VERY
excited about usdisconcertingly so. I liked him a lot, but
his over-the-top enthusiasm (he insisted I was perfect)
gave me pause. Given how little we knew about each other, it
felt like too much. I worried Lewis might be the kind of per-
son whose feelings run hot and cold. But afer a few weeks,
I let go and let myself fall for him. Unfortunately, the more
attached I got, the less perfect he thought I was.
Afer two months, Lewis morphed from a perfect boy-
friend to one whod abruptly disappear from e-mail and
texts for days, cancel plans, and behave coldly except when
he was warm and aectionatethe way hed been in the
beginning. Then Id think all was ne, that my worries were
unfounded. Afer all, he explained his text absences afer-
ward (a death in the family that hed been too upset to let me
know about). And everyone needs space sometimes, right?
Besides, wed been dating only a few months.
I didnt want to seem needy, not to myself or to Lewis.
I certainly didnt think of myself as needyI was an inde-
pendent, career-minded young woman living in New York
City. But the truth was, I was afraid to call out Lewis on his
behavior and how it was making me feel, because the one
time I had tried to get him to talk about our relationship,
Relax, youre not
a stage-5 clinger.
hed gotten angry. He said he hated
to talk about his feelings; I insisted
one had to sometimes. We went to
bed mad. I lef early the next day to
catch a plane, and he didnt speak to
me the whole week I was away.
My friend Missy, whom I was
visiting in Tucson, told me this
was a dick move on Lewiss part.
Missys boyfriend echoed this. The
guy sounds like bad news, he said.
I agreed, ready to write Lewis o.
But as soon as I was headed home,
Lewis called. He apologized. I caved.
I decided the situation was less
black-and-white than Id thought.
Maybe I had been too pushy, too
girlie in my insistence on discuss-
ing things? Afer all, most men
dont like relationship talks.
As Lewiss behavior grew more
cruel and manipulative, I made
excuses for putting up with him.
I thought if I just rode out this rocky
period, hed forgive me and things
would go back to how theyd been.
Id tiptoe around him, timid where
I once felt condent. I began to
feel grateful for any time we spent
together, because it was only when
he was next to me that I felt secure
(and even then only sometimes).
I could see I was acting like a
dierent person from the one hed
fallen for and, more important,
from the person I thought I was. Id
become needy, insecure, and down-
right pathetic.
This phenomenon, in which an
otherwise together woman turns
into a sad, excuse-making doormat,
is one my friend Vanessa calls the
downward spiral of shame. Ah, the
irony: The worse you feel about it,
the more dependent you become on
the relationship thats the source
of your unhappiness. You become
increasingly desperate to save
it no matter what the cost to your
self-respect. It doesnt matter how
smart you are. We can all do it.
Vanessa went into her spiral of
shame with a guy she says wasnt
even a real boyfriend. Now she
wishes shed walked away as soon
as things began to deteriorate.
Instead, she kept seeing him even
though she knew he was dat-
ing other people. To this day, she
regrets an e-mail she sent him.
It was way too long and so earnest, she says. Im embar-
rassed because he didnt deserve such an honest letter. His
response, which wasnt nearly as longor as heartfelt
made her feel exposed and powerless.
For my friend Christine, it was Tom, a guy she met online
afer a long period of being single. Their rst three dates
were perfect. Then Tom went out of town for work. He
called her each night, and they talked for hours. When he
returned, on a Friday, he brought her a gif, and they spent
the weekend together. It was magical, Christine thought.
But on Sunday night, while she was still in a love-struck
haze, Tom called. He told her that he
wasnt over his ex but insisted he didnt
want to stop seeing Christinehe really
liked her. He just wanted to let her know
the situation.
Christine had no idea how to respond.
She had such a great time with him,
and because it had been a while since she
liked someone so much, she didnt want
to lose him and go back to square one.
And at least Tom was up front, right?
She thought his honesty should count for
something. On the other hand, nothing
could have been better calculated to make
Christine insecure than his strange confession.
Tom and Christine continued to see each other for more
than a month afer that, but from that point on, it wasnt
the same. Theyd spend an evening together, and then Tom
would insist he needed his space and disappear for a week.
But what could Christine do? When she complained, he
responded that he had warned her he had issues to work
out. In retrospect, she should have bailed as soon as she got
that unnerving phone call. But instead, she began making
excusesclassic downward spiral of shame.
Afer my relationship with Lewis ended, I was more
upset at the person Id become than I was about losing him.
Every time I thought of my own behaviorhow weak Id
been, how many excuses Id madeId cringe. It didnt feel
like me, and yet it was. At least, it had been.
S
everal years later, when I sat down to write The Love
Aairs of Nathaniel P., I wanted to write about the
downward spiral of shame that my friends and I had
experienced. We were all smart career women with
plenty of interests besides dating. None of us were the kind
of woman who needed a guy in her life at all moments.
And yet, wed all found ourselves tolerating behavior we
shouldnt have, in spite of the toll it took on our self-respect.
The not-especially-likable protagonist of my novel is
30-year-old Nate. He isnt a totally bad guyhes smart,
funny, and a good friendbut he has serious commitment
issues and can be toxic for the women he dates. In the book,
Nate begins to date a woman named Hannah, who is cool
and fun and challenges him in argument. But as Hannah
starts to let down her guard and become more comfortable
in the relationship, Nate grows restless and begins to pull
away. Because he wants to avoid uncomfortable conversa-
tions, he refuses to acknowledge what is happening. But he
doesnt break up with her either. He still likes her, even if he

has grown more conicted than he
used to be.
Nates inconsistent behavior
triggers in Hannah the same ago-
nized response Lewiss behavior
brought out in me. She shrinks
into herself, afraid to com-
plain. One night, eased
by bourbon, she says to
Nate, If someone told me
a month ago what things
would be like between us,
I would have said, No, Id
never stand for that. But
I keep negotiating down
what I think is okay. I like
youmy problem is that
I do like you.
S
ince the
book was
published
last July,
Ive heard
from many
women who
say theyve
dated guys just like Nate,
whose mixed signals
drove them crazy. These
guys behaved in ways
that were hurtful, but
they never quite crossed
the line so that you had to break up
with them. Like Lewis, they tended
to apologize afer theyd ruined
your vacation but before you could
say they were totally irredeem-
able. Or they were like Tom, whose
behavior could be seen as either
selsh or honest. Or as the ctional
Nate does when Hannah nally
tells him how she feels, they beg
for another chance and promise
to do better. These guys were just
jerkish enough to make us unhap-
py but just nice enough to give us
qualms about breaking o things.
But many of the women I heard
from had a hard time sympathiz-
ing with Hannah. She becomes so
weak, a journalist named Andrea
said. She reminds me of parts of
myself that I hate. An outspoken
23-year-old named Rachel came
to a reading to ask me why Han-
nah didnt kick Nate to the curb.
I found her very hard to like, she
said. I never want to be like her.
I get that. When I acted most
like Hannah, I found it hard to like myself. Its painful to
watch Hannah, who starts o so feisty and strong, become
so willing to take Nates shit. Its natural to want her to stick
it to Nate. But I didnt want to make her the woman I wish
Id been. I wanted to examine the eect Nates behavior has
on her. If it were too easy for her to walk away, his behavior
wouldnt seem nearly
as hurtful as I think
it actually is. If Han-
nah never lost her
cool, Nate would have
been let o the hook.
And then theres
this: Maybe it isnt
so terrible to have
been a Hannah at
one point. If Id done
it and all these other
women I heard from
had done it, then
maybe we should
stop feeling so
ashamed of the fact
that at some point
wed liked a guy
so much that we gave
him the benet of the
doubt for too long.
Ultimately, we all
picked ourselves up,
dusted ourselves o,
and learned from our
mistakes. I thought if
we could forgive the ctional Hannah her mistakes, maybe
we could also forgive ourselves.
Interestingly, its men who are most sympathetic toward
Hannah. Ive gotten hundreds of messages from guys,
almost all of whom sheepishly tell me they recognize their
worst behavior in Nate. And yet, they invariably feel for
Hannah. She was clearly responding to Nates passive-
aggression, said 20something Matt. These men take for
granted that Hannah is just neher only problem is dat-
ing Nate. Its Nate they see as having the emotional prob-
lems that make it hard for him to be in a happy relationship.
That squares with my own experience. Not long afer
Lewis and I split, I met my husband. From the start, I could
feel the dierence. I didnt have to worry about becoming the
person Id been with Lewis because I was with a guy who
made me feel secure rather than crazy, needy, or on edge.
My husband may not love having relationship
talkswho does?but he wouldnt get angry at
me for bringing something up. He wants us to
work and is willing to make the eort.
Even now, a part of me will always wish
I could excise the Lewis experience from my
memory. But then I remember that when I
or any of usam tempted to beat myself
up, its worth keeping in mind that the only
thing worse than being too vulnerable is never
being vulnerable at all.

A Not if youre

enough of this B
vitamin from
your food. There
is zero evidence
that folic-acid

one recent study

THE INJURY: CROSS-YOUR-LEGS PAIN
Having sex when you have an infection (UTI, yeast, bacterial vaginosis) can
hurt, and it may make your issue worse. PREVENT IT: Avoid sex if you have signs
of an in fection. If youve been diagnosed, wait a week so the inamed tissue
can heal. TREAT IT: A cold compress soothes pain. Then visit your gyno to see if you
need a prescription and to be sure its not something more serious, like an STI.
THE INJURY: PULLED MUSCLES
Hot sex is often rough sexand the hotter it is, the less likely youll notice cramps and strains, thanks to endorphins
released mid-romp. Only later do you realize you went too far. PREVENT IT: Like in yoga, you have to work your way up
to the advanced poses. Start with positions that keep your legs shoulder-width apartonce your blood is owing
(about ve minutes in), feel free to break into Plow. TREAT IT: 600 mg of ibuprofen should do the trick. Also, RICE: rest,
ice, compress, and elevate. See a doctor if pain and movement dont improve after a few days.
THE INJURY: DOWN-THERE CUTS
Vaginal or vulvar tearing tends to happen when youre underaroused and dry,
which creates more friction. PREVENT IT: Give your body 10 minutes for tissue to
soften, lubrication to take place, and muscles to relax. Use lube for extra help.
TREAT IT: Go to a doc if the pain is unbearable or bleeding is as heavy as a period.
THE INJURY: UFOS (UNRETRIEVABLE FOREIGN OBJECTS)
When theres a hole, things can get stuck. PREVENT IT: Dont insert anything past
two inchesorgasm science shows theres no benet to your pleasure past
that point. And use only anal-specic toys in that region. Most have a wider base
that you or your partner can (and should) hold on to. TREAT IT: Anal toys tend to
move upstream with time, so dont, uh, sit around on this onetake it to urgent
care. Vaginal? Grab a mirror and your hand or a good friend. Relax so you dont
tense up, which makes retrieval harder. Visit your MD if its still stuck after an hour.

200 COSMOPOLITAN | JUNE 2014
When Megan Joyce felt
the unmistakable burn-
ing and itching of a yeast
infection the day before
a big trip last summer,
she didnt waste time:
The 31-year-old natural-
health practitioner in
Los Angeles picked up an
over-the-counter remedy,
slid in the waxy egg-
shaped suppository, and
went to bed.
At 5 a.m., she woke up
with excruciating burn-
ing. It felt like someone
had taken a blow torch to
my vagina, she says. I
could barely walk. With
a hand mirror, she saw
her labia had swollen
to 10 times its normal
size. It took an emer-
gency visit to her ob-gyn
and a prescribed steroid
before she felt well again.
CHEMICAL OVERLOAD
Its happening to more of
us: Reactions to topical
solutions are so common
that William Ledger,
MD, an ob-gyn at Weill
Cornell Medical Center
in New York City, says he
doesnt recommend them
and prescribes the pill
Diucan instead. Turns
out, some women cant

tration of the antifungal
ingredient in the single-
dose version. (There are
fewer complaints with
the three-day regimen.)
Yeast-infection meds
are the tip of the iceberg.
About one-quarter of
American women have
suered inammation,
pain, or itching on their
vulva, up from about
15 percent seven years
ago. Half the cases are
caused by harsh chemi-
cals in medicinal creams,
soaps, lubes, spermicide,
condoms, hygiene prod-
ucts, and vaginal dyes,
according to a review in
Clinical Medicine Insights:
Womens Health. Because
the vaginal canal and
vulva are rich in blood
vessels and mucus mem-
branes, they can absorb
chemicals at a higher rate
than your skin does.
WHY NOW?
Below-the-belt products
arent new, but were now
using many products at
the same time, explains
Miranda Farage, PhD,
research fellow at Procter
and Gambles Feminine
Care Clinical Sciences, in
Cincinnati, Ohio. Plus,
the trend toward wax-
ing and shaving means
women are removing the
protective layer of skin
and making it more sen-
sitive to a record level of
chemicals, Farage says.
You might have tolerated
yeast meds a few years
ago, but afer starting a
waxing habit and using
lubes and spermicides
with a new boyfriend, you
can stress the skin and
make it vulnerable.
Although any chemi-
cal in a product can
cause a reaction, because
symptoms can take 48
hours to are up, you
may miss the trig-
ger. One culprit you
would immediately
recognize? Dr. Ledger
singles out pro pylene
glycol, a chemical
preservative found in
many gels and oint-
ments that causes
a burning sensation
upon application
in some people.
He estimates that
10 percent of
his patients are
sensitive to it.

HER SKIN SECRET I use a gradual self-tanner on my body the minute
it starts to get warm. It takes away the pressure to get tan.
WHY IT WORKS Tan skin is damaged skin. When skin is hit with UV
light, cells called melanocytes make melanin (aka pigment) to
help ward o any more cellular injury. Not only can constant DNA
assaults lead to skin cancer, but they can also cause brown spots
to linger. If you like a bronze look, get it from a bottle.

HER SKIN SECRET I always wear a ton of SPF 50 on my arms,
shoulders, and backeven if Im just in a tank or sundress
running around. I dont mess around when it comes to my tattoos!
WHY IT WORKS Tats can make skin sun-sensitive. Sunscreen protects
the skin from tanning excessively, which can happen in pigmented
skin, such as where you have a tattoo, explains Macrene Alexiades-
Armenakas, MD, PhD, a dermatologist in NYC. Plus, it helps
prevent UV light from causing your precious body art to blur.
HER SKIN SECRET
When Im in the
sun, not only do I
always have sun-
screen on, I also wear
a wide-brimmed hat
and sunglasses with
UV protective lenses
and sit under an
umbrella. I look chic
on the beach
and keep my skin
healthy too.
WHY IT WORKS
Sunscreen is great
but not perfect, says
Elizabeth Tanzi, MD,
associate professor
of dermatology at
George Washington
University Medical
Center, in D.C.
So wear sunglasses
year-round and a
hat if youll be out-
side all day.

HER SKIN SECRET
I apply sunscreen
on my legs even if
Im just going to be
hanging out in the
backyard in shorts.
My mother has been
diagnosed with skin
cancer three times,
so Im paranoid! I
also wear an antioxi-
dant serum and an
SPF 50 on my face all
summer long.
WHY IT WORKS
The back of the calf
is the most common
melanoma spotwe
tend to forget our legs.
Antioxidants dont
block UV light, but
they help repair dam-
age as its occurring,
says Dr. Alexiades-
Armenakas. Layering
SPF and serum can
help slow the aging
effects of the sun.

I Never
Dreamed
It Was
Skin
Cancer
Blowing off a new mole meant
Allison Beale missed an early
skin-cancer diagnosis. The
malignant growth could have
taken her life.
As a strawberry blonde with fair skin,
I was always careful about the sun. My
little sister and I shared a running joke
about our mutual compulsion to reapply
sunscreen every 15 minutes and spent
more time beneath beach umbrellas and
hats than actually in the sun.
Ironically, I was under an umbrella
at my parents beach house in North
Carolina when my father pointed out the
mole on my neck. Id noticed it about six
months earlier, and in the meantime, it
had gone from tiny and esh-colored to
protruding and black.
The morning after I got home, the
mole hurt and began oozing blood. As
I dabbed it, I called a dermatologist, but
I didnt suspect there was anything seri-
ously wrong with me.
The doctor insisted on a biopsy right
away. At rst, all I
thought was, Ugh,
Im going to have
a tiny scar on my
neck. But even
as the derm was
scraping the mole,
she told me she
could already tell
that it had spread.
Spread? Growing?
Finally, it hit me.
Now I couldnt
stop thinking about
the mole I had
ignoredit was
there when I show-
ered, when I walked
to work, when
I texted a friend. A
week later, I found
out the mole was malignant melanoma
stage 1B. I was scheduled for surgery a
couple of weeks later. I couldnt believe
this was happening. I was only 33. It was
summer. I was happy, starting a relation-
ship. I didnt want it to get weird because
of my health issuesI wanted to savor
the sparks of my summer ing.
The night before my surgery, my sister
and girlfriends threw a cut cancer
out party on an apartment rooftop. We
listened to music, and they brought all
my favorite foodsburgers, platters of
tomatoes and cheese, and wine. It was
an amazing distraction. But later that
night, my sister and I cuddled together
on my bed and cried in the darkness. I
was so scared, it made my stomach hurt.
The next morning, the surgeon said he
would make a deep, wide incision, and
I nodded silently. If he wanted my arm he
couldve had it: I wanted the cancer out.
Surgery recovery was uncomfortable.
But the toughest part was seeing the
large, red, swollen scar. Id always loved
accentuating my collarbone. Now, I wore
a neck scarf every day, hiding my scar.
But something changed in me as the
days went by: I started to think of my
scar as something to be proud of. I took
off the scarf and wore funky Cynthia
Rowley Band-Aids to play up the wound
on my neck.
Last June, I
was pronounced
cancer-free. When
my doctor told me
there were surgical
options to help hide
my scar, I got
upsetoverprotec-
tive even. I dont
want it to fade
away, for things
to go back to the
way they were. Im
stronger now.
Im more conscien-
tious. And I feel
better informed.
I know what to
look for should this
happen again.
Skin cancer is the most common
cancer in the U.S., and rates are
rising in young women. Once a
month, do a head-to-toe scan of
your skin. Look out for...
ASYMMETRY Imagine a line down the cen-
ter of a molevertically and horizontally.
If the sides dont match, it could signal cell
division associated with skin cancer.
BORDER Cancer tends to make a moles
edges jagged, chaotic, or pointy in one spot.
COLOR Its not how dark or light your spot
is, its how even. For example, be wary of
a light brown mole with red specks.
DIAMETER Check out anything larger than
a pencil eraser.
EVOLVING Most important: If a growths
color, edges, or size morphs or bothers you
in any way, see a doctor.

HER SKIN SECRET Every night,
I treat a specic part of my
body to some TLC. One day,
its a lip treatment; another,
its a hydrating face mask,
a body-tightening serum
for my neck, or a thick hand
cream before I go to bed.
WHY IT WORKS At night,
treatments can really soak
in and do what theyre
meant to, uninterrupted,
says Dr. Tanzi. By keeping
on a regular schedule,
the cumulative eect of
treatments pays oand
by rotating body parts,
no area will be missed.

HER SKIN SECRET I always use a gentle cleanser on my sensitive
skin and a heavier moisturizer in the winter and a lighter one
in the summer. By not switching products all the time, I dont
irritate my skin and give the products a chance to do their
thing. WHY IT WORKS One of the biggest mistakes people make is
to keep changing their regimen, Dr. Alexiades-Armenakas says.
Stick to a skin-care routine unless youre having a bad reaction,
you havent seen results afer at least six months, or you did
initially see results and then your skin stopped looking good.
Which Skin
Type Are You?
Your skin is uniquely yours.
Make sure your skin-care regimen
is too, with our customized Rxs.
BY MARTA TOPRAN
Since you dont burn easily, you may
slack on SPF and occasionally get a
sunburneach of which doubles your
chances of getting melanoma, a rare
but dangerous skin cancer. If youre
Latina (as many 4s are), beware: Your
skin-cancer rates are growing faster
than Caucasians.
YOUR SKIN RX Liquid SPF (at right).
Its lightweight so youll never skip it.
Youll need to watch for hyper-
pigmentation, which happens
when your naturally high amounts
of melanin get stimulated by the
sun, creating freckles or melasma.
Although rare, melanomas are
most likely to appear on your
palms, soles, nail beds, and vulva,
so monitor those areas regularly.
YOUR SKIN RX A base with SPF (at right)
to prevent and cover up spots.

WHY IT WORKS
Because the beach
is not the only place
youre in the sun.
Five minutes here,
10 minutes there,

GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT: Movie Snacks!
You know what the classics are, so stock up and put them out on a big tray.
(The upshot: This is definitely cheaper than buying candy at the theater.)
1. With a rack in the
center, preheat oven to
200 degrees. Combine
2 cups brown sugar, 2
sticks salted butter, and
cup light corn syrup in
a pan; boil for 5 minutes.
2. Whisk in 1 teaspoon
each baking soda and
vanilla extract. Stir in
cup chopped pecans.
3. Cool slightly, then pour
over 8 cups of popped
popcorn. Stir to coat.
Spread popcorn mixture
onto a cookie sheet lined
with wax paper. Bake for
about an hour, stirring
every 15 minutes.
the kale on paper towels to drain.
3. Put fried kale in a bowl. Toss with 2 teaspoons
ground cayenne and 1 cup grated American
Grana, such as BelGioioso. Salt to taste.
Perfect Pear
Pour the mixture
over fresh ice, then
top with a splash
each of ginger ale and
Pama Pomegranate
Liqueur. Garnish with
a lime wedge.
You and this drink
go together like

er, Noah and Allie.
YOU CANT LIVE ON EYE CANDY ALONE
Master your grilled-cheeses
with this advice from
Jason Hicks of NYCs La Maison
du Croque Monsieur.
1. Go with day-old (but good) bread.
2. Use clarified butter for even toasting.
3. Lower the heat! If the cheese is
too hot, you cant taste it.
4. Dont overload your
sandwich. Everything
in moderation.
