1-Nava Kailasam

1.1-Sage Agasthiyar and Pothigai hill

The Pothigai hill is almost synonymous with Sage Agasthiar. Per Legend, on
the occasion of Lord Shivas marriage to Goddess Parvati at KAilayam, the
whole of celestal world had assembled there and so the equilibrium of the
earth got affected. So Lord Shiva sent Sage Agasthya to this region to
balance the earth and showed His marriage dharshan in many temples in
Tamilnadu. So almost all the temples in this region were worshipped by
Agasthiyar and he can be seen in all those templesSage Agasthiyar was
doing penance in the Podhikai hills and Uromasa rishi was his prime disciple.
Uromasar wanted to get liberation and he prayed to Lord Shiva. The Lord
wanted to bless through his Guru Sage Agasthiar who put nine flowers in the
Thamirabarani river and asked Uromasar to install a Shiva lingam and pray
at places wherever these flowers dock on the banks. Also he was advised to
take bath in the place where the river confluence with the sea. Uromasar
did the same and got liberated. These nine abodes are called Nava
Kailasam. Most of the temples look very beautiful, though small in size.

Nava Kailasam:
They are considered as the Navagraha parihara sthalams. Whereas in
Kumbakonam we worship the actual (Nava) grahas for the pariharams, here
we can worship their bosses Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu themselves as the
(Nava) Graha Gods for pariharams.
