Welcome to the new format Newsletter
In the last 2 years, the Newsletter has undergone a transition from a stale black and white printed letter to a brightly
coloured and well-formatted on line magazine that reflects the new media technology of the 21
st
Century. Chris all has
o!erseen this de!elopment to its current position for which we pass him many thanks. In "uly the baton will pass to #dam
$ula. %ur members ha!e forwarded their comments and the magazine will change accordingly. &he size will be reduced
and the format changed. In particular, we will be focussing on ease of use. &here will be updated lists of e!ents, articles
and club listings. &he format will be such that members can print out indi!idual pages which contain all the information
they need. 'e will also incorporate e!ents from (aming Centres of which there has been a recent e)plosion of openings.
'e will still carry full colour ads for our *ponsors and &raders, but these will now be in a separate section and will feature
more articles concerning their products and future plans+
#bo!e all, this is a newsletter for the membership of the (CN. 'e want your articles, stories, photos in fact anything that
shows what is going on in your club or area. It might be a report of a show or a re!iew of some new rules you ha!e tried
out. 'e on the council will also feature a ,what-s going down.- section to let you know what we are doing and why so that
you get a chance to add your say to the policies being carried forward. *o we-ll kick off right away+
Whats Going Down?
"une 2/10
&he *ummer (CN (uide is now a!ailable. 'e intend to carry more of the information in these newsletters. &his will be
more effecti!e as the 1embership is always in flu) with clubs 2oining and contact and address details being changed. &he
link to the guide as follows3 (CN (4I56 If your club is running e!ents and you re7uire any please contact me with your
re7uirements and I-ll send you a pack through the post.
'e are also refurbishing the system of banners. Currently we only ha!e three, for the *outh 6ast, 1idlands and 8orkshire.
&hese are being replaced and new ones commissioned. 'ith the ad!ent of digital printing we are able now to customise
their appearance, so that the new 9anner for *outh 'ales will be red and sport a 'elsh 5ragon alongside the (CN logo. If
you are a (CN club putting e!ents on and standing at shows outside the areas already co!ered, talk to :aurie *tewart ;see
the Council Contacts below<, and you may find yoursel!es carrying a banner decked out in your regional colours. :aurie
also carries a stock of 5ice, =igures and 9adges which are a!ailable as gi!eaways.
&he website has been the (CN-s bane for years and the sub2ect of much criticism, most of it deser!ed. &he re!amp and
reconstruction of the website has been plagued by ill luck. &he Council ha!e decided to make an end to it. 'e will be
commissioning a completely new website during the #utumn, to be completed by Christmas at the latest. &his will
incorporate many features re7uested by (CN members and will abo!e all be user friendly and rele!ant. &his is being
o!erseen by 1artyn (ough and #dam $ula, so if you ha!e any ideas or comments, they are the guys to contact.
&he 5iscounts and %ffers scheme has pro!ed !ery popular ;I wonder why.<. In the #utumn, we e)pect to double the
number of companies in!ol!ed in this scheme. 9ecause of this and the added complication of so many codes, the system
will be changed as follows. Instead of many codes, the (CN will issue a new password each 7uarter starting with %ctober
which will co!er all of the %ffers>5iscounts. #dditionally, we will be assigning each member club their own I5 reference.
=or e)ample Chesterfield (aming *ociety might be 56C%00. 'hene!er a club applies to a company for the offer or
discount they will re7uired to pro!ide both the ?uarter-s @assword and their own I5 reference. &he first password will be
gi!en out as the #nnual Aeturns are recei!ed from each Club. &he Club I5s will be published with the "uly and #ugust
editions of the Newsletter. 'e would ask that you also use the Club I5 as a reference when paying subs>@:I as often if the
payment comes from a pri!ate che7ue or @aypal account, the payee can sometimes be difficult to identify.

GUIDE TO THE CRB
GCN
A Laymans Guide to the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) and
how it affects our hobby.
One of the continuing queries arising regularly from member clubs concerns the rules
governing vulnerable adults and children. The first point to make is that the Criminal
Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) have been merged
to form the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). At the time of publishing, the prices are
correct.
This then is a basic guide. As with all government legislation, this is subject to change. For up
to date information you can visit the official website at
https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/disclosure-and-barring-service.
The Guide
In 2013, the then President, the late Tony Barnes contacted the CRB centre in Liverpool for
clarification on potential checks for a club wanting to set up activities for under 18 members
only. He was informed by the client advisor that the rules and regulations had changed
again in late 2012 regarding CRB checks for any club set up solely for members aged under
18.
The changes are as follows,
CRB, (Criminal Record Bureau) is now referred to as DBS, (Disclosure and Barring Service).
A DBS check may be needed for a volunteer working with children in certain areas, however
there is no longer a mandatory requirement for club officials to have DBS checks to set up or
run war gaming clubs for under 18s.
A GCN member clubs CPP (Child Protection Policy) is now the most important document for
under 18s at your club.
Any GCN member club may apply for a DBS check if your committee deem it to be
appropriate for that club.
Any person wishing to have a DBS check may be eligible for a free DBS check, providing that
they are in a volunteer role and not being paid.
Further information is available from the www.gov.uk web site,
https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/disclosure-and-barring-service.
Please note that the rules for DBS checks are different in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
http://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk/apply/employers/
http://www.dojni.gov.uk/accessni

The information below should now be treated as a guideline only.
GUIDE TO THE CRB
GCN
Most war gaming clubs in the UK will now fall into five categories.
These are:
1 Clubs that do not allow members under the age of 18.
2 Clubs that are set up solely for members under the age of 18.
3 Clubs that have only a small number of members under the age of 18.
4 Clubs that have members approximately split 50/50 between under 18 and adult.
5 Clubs that have more under 18 members than adult members.

Notes:

1 These clubs do not need to have CRB/BDS checks and do not require a child protection
policy, provided that they do not intend to have anyone in the venue under the age of 18 as
a full member of the club.

2 These clubs may require all the persons involved in the running the club to have
enhanced DBS checks should that clubs committee decide that they want to, however it is
no longer a mandatory requirement to do so.

3 These clubs do not need to have CRB/DBS checks, although they may get CRB/DBS
checks if they think they have sufficient reason to do so. The club must have a good set of
club rules/constitution with a defined disciplinary procedure and a child protection policy to
the standard of the GCN or better. GCN member cubs will already have fulfilled this criteria
when signing the Member Charter as part of the GCN application process.

4 These clubs do not need to have CRB/DBS checks, although they may get CRB/BDS
checks if they think they have sufficient reason to do so. However, at the very least the club
must have a good set of club rules/constitution with a defined disciplinary procedure and a
child protection policy to the standard of the GCN or better.

5 These clubs do not need to undertake CRB/DBS checks, however the club may choose to
have CRB/DBS checks for its committee depending on the age (and number) of some of the
younger members. Having CRB/DBS checks may be the recommended course of action for
clubs in this situation. However, at the very least the club must have a good set of club
rules/constitution with a defined disciplinary procedure and a child protection policy to the
standard of the GCN or better.
Please note that as of 1
st
March 2012 the GCN can no longer carry out free CRB or DBS
checks.

This is as a direct result of the rules being relaxed, we no longer need to do as many checks
for clubs and as such the GCN now fail to meet the minimum criteria to allow us to carry on
being an umbrella body.

The Gov.uk web site has all the information your club needs for obtaining checks. For your
reference CRB/DBS checks now cost 26.00 for a Standard check and 44.00 for an
Enhanced check, if you are not eligible for a free check.

The role of the club development advisor is a facility a club can use if it wishes to get advice on a
range of issues in how a new club can move forward once it has joined the network, or indeed for
any club which is already a member of the GCN.
Firstly it should be made clear that ANY advice given to your club is given freely and is only a
suggestion based on previous experience within my own and other clubs I have dealt with. What
your club decides to do with any of the ideas, information or suggestions is solely a decision for
your clubs committee and membership.
The type of advice offered can be on a whole range of different subjects including the following:-
Club promotion.
Attracting new members
Running the club
Organizing and planning events
Raising funds
Communication
Clubs should remember that each club has its own separate identity and is unique. So what may
work for one club may not work for another.
Now for a little bit about myself, my name is Darrell Lee I have been a member of the Phoenix
Gaming Club in Rushden Northamptonshire for over 15 years, and I was club chairman for over
half of that time. In my time at the club I have seen it grow from a small group of around a dozen
or so members to well over 40 active members. We have close connections with a number of
organizations including the GCN, various manufacturers, other clubs and English Heritage. We
currently run two very successful events a year and a number of in house competitions. PGC play
a wide variety of tabletop games and systems and have play tested a number of systems for games
manufacturers. In the time I have been involved at the club I seen it change and evolve beyond
anything that I thought it would ever be, which is something I am very proud about, however this
could not have been achieved without much careful thought taking good solid decisions, made by
myself and my fellow committee members at the club over the years, so I hope my experiences
can now benefit other clubs in the network.
I have also had to deal with some of the less pleasing instances that may occur and effect a club
and its members from time to time, something which I can also advise on if required.
If you need advice for your club, or just want to organise a chat about something at your club,
then please feel free to contact me at if you think I might be able to help, my e-mail is

The Big T Auction
This will be taking place at the Sanctuary Gaming Centre on Saturday, the 12th July 2014.
Most of you will know of the death of Tony Barnes, President of the GCN and a force of
nature but also one of the nicest guys on the planet
Well, as well as all these attributes, he was also a prodigious modeller and painter and along
with the hordes of painted figures he produced, he also had what we all have a vast lead
mountain of unpainted figures and boxes of unopened blisters and packs.
His widow Christine has decided to sell the entire collection (apart from one or two
keepsakes) and to do it in one huge sale. This is it.
We will be accepting only two forms of payment, Cash and PAYPAL for which we will have
two points on the day.
Most of the stock will be sold in a vast Tabletop sale (average price 20-25% below retail),
with tables divided into Flames of War, LOTR, 40k, Bolt Action and the like. There will also
be a table or two packed with paints, some part-used, some not, and modelling items such as
knives, magnifiers, brushes, wires, bases and all sorts.
Some of the painted items, including a Blood Angels Army, late German and early British
FOW armies will be sold as Auction on the day. These pieces are professionally painted.
Tony painted and modelled for Battlefront, Warlord and Games Workshop among others.
Testament to his skills was his last great project, the town for Saving Private Ryan which he
completed literally days before his death and was on display at Salute and will be brought
back to the Sanctuary Gaming Centre in the near future for Players to enjoy (very carefully!).

gcn @ SANCTUARY
Transport for the Soviet Proletariat, on the cheap!
For Cold War Gamers, the last couple of years have seen
Cold War military vehicles pouring out from various companies.
Company B, London War Room and Sloppy Jalopy all have
decent ranges.
But what about civilian vehicles? A few months ago, my wife
happened upon a set of die-cast models being sold in Poundland.
She took a chance and bought me some and I raced back to the
said shop to buy as many as I could but disappointingly they
had sold out
What were these models? They were the Russian equivalent of Corgi cars, 28mm compatible civilian
vehicles including ambulances, fire engines and police cars made in China for Russia, Ukraine and
Belarus. This weekend at Meadowhall, they reappeared and I bought every type I could at the unbelievable
price of 1 each (that included a coach!).
Poundland are known for buying end of line items and so there is no guarantee of what store will have
what and how long that stock will last. I have noticed one or two entrepreneurs selling these vehicles at
4+ a pop. But here are a set of photos, each with a 28mm figure for comparison.
The names of the vehicles are in Cyrillic so I leave it to you to identify each of the vehicles.
According to the blister packs they came in from the Premium and Collectibles Trading Co. Ltd.
Partizan 2014
When Sheffield Triples initially moved from March to the end of May making it only a week between
that show and Partizan, I had to choose one and the other, four years later they seem to have settled
for a fortnights separation which, together with my wifes heavy expenditure on her gardening hobby
allowed me to make the moral case for attending both.
For most gamers the big news about Partizan was that the venue, Kelham Hall, had double booked
their event with an Art Nouveau exhibition. Carping aside, the Newark Irregulars were offered the
alternative of a marquee (10,000 square feet I believe) outside in the grounds. If as was rumoured
this is at the clubs own cost, if so I really hope they get a good discount for the next show.
Luckily for the Irregulars, the sun shone, the ground was dry and many, many cars formed a respectful
car park in front of the marquee. Although disabled parking consisted of being nearer to the entrance,
I did note wheelchairs having a pretty hard time of it on the rough ground. No vote for Kelhams attitude
on this issue, considering all the disabled ramps and facilities inside the hall itself. Had the weather
been as the previous Sunday this could have been a disaster. Basic catering facilities, very cheap and
cheerful, were supplied in what appeared to be a cricket pavilion across from the tent.
The Marquee itself consisted of three vast rooms
and there seemed to be a higher percentage of
games than usual. All the usual traders were there,
Warlord, Kallistra, Caliver Books etcetera and most
welcomed the light (Kelham can be like a Morlocks
throne room) and the fact that when taking card
payments they did not have walk around the hall like
holding their card machines in the air like CIA
agents sweeping for bugs. The down side was the
air conditioning i.e. none and the effect of so many
gamers in effectively a smaller space was soon
apparent. I noticed there were many flaps stood
open in the Marquee by the time we left.
Partizan 2014
There were some very nice games on show, in particular White Harts Allan Quartermaine and the Lost
City IHMN game which was vast in scale and very popular and the incredibly detailed Zombie game put
on by the Bunker (which included a Gruffalo!). Amongst the series of really outstanding games I was a
little disappointed to see a demonstration of Deadzone taking place with unpainted figures!
As ever I went expecting to buy certain essential items, like Varnish and figure trays and left without
those items but another lead mountain of figures.

Overall, it was a nice show and all credit to the Irregulars for managing to stage it as well as they did
with only a months notice. Had I not been travelling with the wife, I might even have tried some games
as it is rare I get to visit a show Im not standing at.
As to a marquee, I could be persuaded but I think it would definitely need to be bigger for all the bodies
that attend as gamers are hardly the slimmest of people, especially when they are sporting the dreaded
backpacks!

ARCANE
About Arcane
Thanks for taking the trouble to look at this page. Hopefully it will reassure you that it is perfectly safe to
trade with us and answer any questions that you may have.
I first started trading on the web when I joined ebay back in 2001. The main purpose being to clear the
clutter from my loft. I have been collecting and building models all of my life and I had accumulated a large
collection of science fiction memorabilia, model kits and war gaming models and accessories. I felt that it
was time to de-clutter and I reluctantly started to sell off my collection. In doing so I found that I really
enjoyed trading on ebay and that was the start of a change in career! As well as this online shop we have a
well established shop on ebay. The idea is for the two sites to complement each other.
I have been building models since I was about six, my first being the Airfix model of the Golden Hind. I
have since built most of the Airfix range, many of the Tamiya 1/35 tanks and a considerable number of
Revell and other kit manufacturers products over the last 44 years! I am a keen gamer and member of the
Warhammer World gaming club, the 1st Company Veterans. I currently have a Necron army that I am
building to Apocalypse level and I am gradually building a British Napoleonic Army. You can follow my
progress on these projects by clicking into my blog. I model and paint to a good gaming standard and I have
made it through to the final round of the Golden Demon in 1999 with one of my models. I have a fascination
for the First and Second World wars, the Battle of Waterloo, Agincourt, the English Civil War, The Roman
Army.in fact I just love military history! So whilst Im no expert, I think that I have a degree of
experience and knowledge. My first full time job was as a sales assistant in Mansells Models in Paignton,
now long closed, and it was there that I was able to experience all aspects of the modelling hobby and this
experience has stayed with me through my life.
I used to have a very demanding full time job as a store manager in a major retail company and it was my
hobby of building and painting models that kept me sane! The thing is, I know how important my hobby is
to me, so I will ensure that my customers are treated accordingly. Now that I have decided to set up my own
web based model shop and together with my Wife, Julie, we are gradually building the sort of model shop
that I would have liked to shop in. I hope that you will too.
Please dont hesitate to contact me with any questions about our products.
Thank you and Happy modelling!

Blitzkrieg tanks What scale do I choose!!

We now carry Blitzkrieg tanks in both 1/48th
scale, 1/56th scale and claim that both scales
are suitable for 28mm figures so which one do
you choose? (we also have them in 1/72 scale
but these are designed for 20mm figures &
hopefully there is no confusion here!)
The 1/48th scale range was originally designed
because although manufacturers claim their
figures to be 28mm in size, they are often larger
& closer to 30mm. Also, the sculpting process
tends to favour a chunkier look to the figures.
Add to this, the fact that most wargamers will
mount their figures on bases and you finish up
with that figures that will look on the large size when placed beside the 1/56th scale tank models. So we
introduced the slightly larger 1/48th scale tanks in resin, feeling that they looked more realistic and more
imposing on the battlefield.
The 1/56th scale range was designed with the wargamer that already had other vehicles of this scale in their
collection in mind. We realised that if you already had a PZIII in 1/56th, you wouldnt want a different
variant in a different scale. This scale also goes well with some of the smaller figure ranges such as the
new Perrys miniatures, which are true 28mm or the foundry range which tends to be smaller sculpts than
later ranges. Of course this range is perfectly compatible to the Bolt Action 1/56th range.
So which range do you choose? Well, if you already have 1/56th scale vehicles , it makes sense to stick with
this scale. If you havent, my choice would be to go for the larger 1/48th scale as they just look more in scale
when on a gaming table.

Gun Boat!
Oh dear! Ive been distracted from finishing off one
project by the lure of something more interesting..
I guess its a common occurrence and it explains why
most of us in the hobby have a lead mountain lurking
around in a secret location. A bit like the Wifes handbag
and shoe collection
Well, last year, at the Derby war games show I saw a
lovely model of a naval gunboat and thought that it would
make a nice addition to my collection. I justified buying
it as I could use it in the Caribbean campaign that I will one day play. Having had the instant gratification of
buying it and showing it off to my mate, once home it went up onto the shelf for later.
Well, I was tidying around in the garage this wet
bank holiday weekend and came across it. What
a great little project to complete, I thought. It
wont take long as the uniforms are pretty straight
forward to paint and they use a similar colour
scheme to the Prussians, so I might as well have
ago at finishing it.
Unfortunately, things arent that simple. The
figures werent quite as cleanly molded as I
would like. Now I dont mind doing a bit of
cleaning up, scraping down mold lines , getting
rid of flash etc. but these figures were just hard
work! In fact, rather than cleaning up, it felt at
times that I was re-sculpting
them.Nevertheless, I persevered and I did
make some progress. In fact, actually, the figures turned out to be quite nice and when put all together on the
boat, do make a nice model. So the boat and the crew are finished. Just 5 marines and the ten oarsmen to go.
So much for a quick project.

The full crew awaiting painting
