This is a single phase motor.

There are variable frequency drives (VFD or

VSD) to suit single phase motors, but no certainty they ill or! ithout
more detail. There are many types of single phase induction motors. Some
have centrifugal start sitches, some have both indings connected
continuously, and most use a capacitor or inductor to create a second phase
to start. "enerally these motors run rougher than a # phase motor. There is
also the cooling fan to consider. $est to use a motor and VFD that are suitable
for each other therefore. %ontact the supplier for advice on your motor. &t
small si'es the e(ciency is poor for either type, but # phase is generally
better. These motors often have poor poer factor as lo as ).*.
VFD control or!s better ith # phase motors, especially those intended for
this operation. +t is alays better to get a motor to suit. The to types cost
appro, imately the same. Thus you ill run the # phase motor from single
phase supply using the VFD. This is a system that can or! ell.
The simple type of controller in your lin! can or! ith a single phase
induction motor, despite the rant of the unhappy customer on that page. This
type uses a triac to ad-ust the mains voltage to the motor by modifying the
aveform. +t is important that the mechanical load suits . a fan or centrifugal
pump that increases the loading ith increased speed (non.linear load), and
the full load torque not much less than the motor. Thus the voltage is
reduced, and the load pulls the speed don to a ne balance or speed and
torque. /nce again centrifugal sitches, fans etc come into it. See the 0rst
lin!. +t is best to use motors intended for this type of control too. 1ith
standard motors, reduce only to 2)3 of speed (#*3 air reduction), and
monitor inding temperature to get an idea of safe operation. These are
usually to save poer by reducing fan output a little. The lin! is for 45)V
motors though.
Summing up, there are not many suitable single phase induction motors for
speed control ithout losing something, but # phase are suitable, used ith a
VFD. The VFD can run from single phase. $rushless motors are the same
category as # phase ith VFD basically. 6otors ith commutators and a
speed controller are generally more e,pensive, more maintenance, and
generally heavier. The electric drill type (universal series motor) are too fast,
but you could consider a cordless drill (permanent magnets) in some
situations. Some of these are more than 7hp but not continuous.
Single.phase motors . These motors are commonly fractional.horsepoer
types, though integral si'es are generally available to 7) hp. The most
common single phase motor types are shaded pole, split phase,
capacitorstart, and permanent split capacitor. &n induction motor is an
alternating current (only) motor that has one or more coils of ire ound on a
metal frame that induces a current in the conductors in the rotor hen the
rotor is moving at a di8erent than synchronous speed.
appliacation of single phase induction motors: fans,
compressor,mixture....
how does a sigle phase induction motors work:
a single phase motor has 4 parts. a stator and rotor.
the supply is fed to the stator indings.as a result of that,a magnetic 0eld is
developed on the stator indings hich runs at synchronous speed. this
magnetic 0eld is induced on the rotor9s indings hich produces a torque on
it and it starts rotating.this is ho a single phase motor rotates.
that is partially right
but the ac supply has to half cycles :ve and .ve
due to hich there is magnetic 0eld developed hich is alternating in nature
due to hich the net torque developed in the rotor becomes 'ero and there is
no rotation
so to avoid this there is an arrangement of capacitor in the stator to ma!e the
rotating magnetic 0eld unidirectional and ith a constant magnetic 0eld
after that the anser above is right
