Next Page 2 Rotary International has first Taiwanese president Gary Huang is a name that not everyone is familiar with. However, from this point onward, it is a name that people will not only remember but also respect. Huang was recently elected as the President of Rotary International for 2014 to 2015, which makes him the first Taiwanese person chosen for this position. He will lead Rotary members from 168 countries and be in charge of over 34,000 global Rotary events starting from this year. Huang, who is 70 years old, was the President of Shin Kong Security, Royal Host Taiwan and Taiwan Pelican Express Co. Even with all this business experience, for Huang, the part of his career that he is most proud of is what he has done for and with Rotary International. No one is born to have the ambition or vision to join Rotary, Huang joked. For me, people's success cannot be solely determined by how much money they can make or how important their jobs are. It is about how much they do for the society or for the nation. When Huang was 31 years old, he applied to join Rotary International for the first time, but his application was turned down because he was too young. He applied on two more occasions but Rotary still gave him the same answers.Huang spent nine months actively participating in Rotary events, which eventually led to the opportunity for him to join. WHY THE ROTARY YEAR BEGINS 1 JULY Board of Directors Meeting held Published by President PHF Deepak Somarajan, Edited by MPHF and Associate Editor PHF Arjun, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Quilon West End. For private and restricted circulation only. Printed at Don Bosco,Kollam Y.S. Prakash Ever wonder why the Rotary year begins 1 July? The international convention initially played a key role in determining the start date of our fiscal and administrative year. Rotary's first fiscal year began the day after the first convention ended, on 18 August 1910. The 1911-12 fiscal year also related to the convention, beginning with the first day of the 1911 convention on 21 August. At its August 1912 meeting, the Board of Directors ordered an audit of the International Association of Rotary Clubs' finances. The auditors recommended that the organization end its fiscal year on 30 June to give the secretary and treasurer time to prepare a financial statement for the convention and board, and determine the proper number of club delegates to the convention. The executive committee concurred, and at its April 1913 meeting, designated 30 June as the end of the fiscal year. This also allowed for changes to the schedule for reporting club membership and payments. Even The Rotarian changed its volume numbering system to correspond to the fiscal year (beginning with vol. 5, July 1914). The term "Rotary year" has been used to signify Rotary's annual administrative period since at least 1913. An article in The Rotarian that July noted, "The Rotary year that is rapidly drawing to a close has been signalized by several highly successful joint meetings of Clubs that are so situated as to assemble together easily and conveniently. Since the executive committee's decision in 1913, the end of the Rotary year has remained 30 June. Varkey Jacob, the two other Chairmen who were absent, presented reports on Membership and Public Relations. Earlier, the Club bulletin was released by President Elect Dr Saji. Before the conclusion of the Club Assembly, a few members- Charter President Saravana Shekar and Editor YS Prakash spoke, making an evaluation of the Installation programme. After the proposal of vote of thanks by Secretary Rtn S.Muraleedharan, the Assembly was adjourned for dinner. Contd from ... 1 Page Annet Shahina Hashim JULY 13 Rtn. Nevin Pereira JULY 14 Rtn.
