SLANG 1980s

The language used on social media sites has changed the way teens speak on an everyday
basis. Now, slang is not only limited to social media sites, but is a common part of the
general publics vocabulary. In my opinion, using slang makes you sound unsophisticated
(no offense to slang users).
One common slang word is hashtag. On social media sites (such as Instagram and
Twitter), you can add a hashtag before a word and be able to then trace that word. For
example, #besties is a common hashtag. You can search all the pictures or posts with
#besties included in them and be able to see any post, even if it belongs to a private user.
Hashtags were limited to social media sites, but now people use them when they have a
conversation.
Another word is sevie. Sevie is commonly found in the vocabulary of junior high
students (including eighth graders). It stands for seventh grader. First of all, why do
we even need a word for seventh grader? It is just as easy to say seventh grader. And
second, why sevie? It sounds like you are calling the seventh grader a baby. Why
would a seventh grader want to be called a baby? I hear this a lot and wonder how this
word even became popular.
As we all (hopefully) know, LOL was originally meant to say Lots of Love but it is now
an acronym for Laugh Out Loud. First if all, when people say lol they dont actually
laugh out loud. It is just basically saying, oh, haha. Thats funny. And secondly, now
people are saying it as it is spelled instead of the letter form. Personally, I just dont like
acronyms. I dont even like it when people spell okay as ok.
Using slang when you speak makes you sound unsophisticated. Teens should keep
the slang words in their texts and out of their mouths.
