THE WORLD
Today, in the Church of God, the Gospel of the
Passion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is
recounted for our meditation. How clearly the battle
line is drawn! For those who follow Christ, the way of
truth is revealed as a path not of this world. Crucify
him! Crucify him! Cry those who, only a short time
ago, hailed him as king. And for those of us who
kneel before the Holy Altar and sing the hymn of the
angels, Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, how revolting it is
to cry out for our Saviors death. But is this not our
way? One moment we follow the way of Christ, and
the next we hold fast to the way of the world. But it
cannot be both! Learn from what our Savior says of
his followers, “If you were of the world, the world
would love its own; but because you are not of the
world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the
world hates you” (Jn 15:19). Can the same be said of
us? Do we hate the world and all of its temptations?
Does the world hate us? As we approach the week
which is called Holy, let us consider which side of the
battle we are on. Today, we turn the ear of our soul to
listen to the wisdom of Saint Ephrem the Syrian, and
place before our eyes the challenge of the way of
Christ.
What advantage do you offer those who love
you, O world, you dwelling place of sorrows? All who
draw near to you do you seduce with your treasures
and with all your delights, but in the day of death both
the fair countenance of the beautiful and the might of
the strong will be cast down into the grave. Woe to
him who loves you, for his joy will be transformed into
cries.
In the world—that sea of sin—all my days have
passed in vain. My life has gone by without bringing
me any profit. I have even forgotten about the day of
death. I have whirled about and gathered a burden of
sins, whole sheaves of tares destined to be consumed
by fire. And behold—lamentation and sighs await me
in that land full of horrors.
Because I have loved you, O cunning world,
from my youth through my old age, the time of my life
has passed without my notice; and lo, in sin will death
steal me away. O if only I had never set foot in you, O
world that deceives all who enter! Those who love
you enjoy no pleasures, and those who hate you weep
not. Blessed is he who has torn your snares
asunder—he shall inherit the habitation of the joy.
This world deceives even the wise with its
appearance, for at times it appears desirable. It even
offers benefits and treasures for loan, but in the day of
death it will take them back and give in return torment
incomparably greater than our sins. For a short while
will it let us sin, but as a reward it will give us eternal
darkness.
Righteous art thou, O Lord, and righteous is
Thy judgment that condemns the world and those who
love it! Therefore do I pray thee that Thy right hand
which pulled Simon out of the sea might also pull me
out of the waves and the tumult of this world that rise
up against me. I have become mired in filth; the
waters of the world are drowning me, they do not let
me break loose to catch my breath. May Thy Cross,
O Lord, be my staff and my support on the path along
which I walk.

From the Music Desk…
I proudly introduce to you one of our basses, Mr.
John Boulanger.
John Boulanger received his bachelor of
music degree from the University of Texas in
Austin. He has been heard as soloist and cantor at
the Basilica of the National Shrine of the
Immaculate Conception and Saint Matthew’s
Cathedral in Washington. He has recorded several
CDs of sacred and secular choral music as a
member of The American Repertory Singers under
the direction of Dr. Leo Nestor, on the ARSIS label.
Mr. Boulanger is involved with The Forgotten
Opera Company, a small professional opera
company based in Montgomery County, with which
he recently performed the title role in Kirke
Mechem’s opera Tartuffe in addition to roles in
Menotti’s The Telephone, Mozart’s Don Giovanni
and Marriage of Figaro; and various roles in
concert performance of operatic excerpts. He has
sung roles with The Washington Opera, The
Eldbrooke Artists Series, The Other Opera
Company, The Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia,
and The Washington Savoyards.
In musical theatre, Mr. Boulanger has performed
with the American Century Theatre, Signature
Theatre, and the In-Series, particularly enjoying the
works of Stephen Sondheim.
As a recitalist, he has presented programs of
American, British, German, and French art songs,
including several performances of Schubert’s
Winterreise in recent years, and appeared in two
programs at the Supreme Court of the United
States, the first of which featured the Washington
area premiere of Bernstein’s last major work, Arias
and Barcarolles.
