Centrals Commercial Engineering Unit currently ofers industry-specifc training in the following skill areas: Non-destructive testing Welding Supervision Certifcate 10 Fabrication/Welding Inspection Gas Safety Training 4 E N G I N E E R I N G
2 0 1 3 Central Institute of Technology has been delivering training in non-destructive testing (NDT) for several years now and has developed a reputation for producing high quality industry practitioners. This is due in no small part to the calibre of instruction and the facilities Central has invested in. Gaining skills and certifcation in non- destructive testing (NDT) methodologies can lead to a rewarding career in a number of industry sectors including mining and mineral processing; oil and gas construction; maintenance, service and repair of equipment; aviation; structural steel and pressure vessel fabrication and maintenance; service inspection companies; vehicle maintenance & manufacturing; test equipment manufacture and sales. Central ofers courses in most of the main testing methods required by industry including magnetic particle testing (MT), penetrant testing (PT), ultrasonic testing (UT) and radiographic testing (RT). These courses meet all the training requirements for certifcation with the Australian Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (AINDT) and any other ISO 9712 organisation. APPLYING METALLURGY PRINCIPLES FOR NDT TECHNICIANS This unit covers basic manufacturing and metallurgy principles related to non- destructive testing techniques. It covers the principles and methods used to produce castings, fusion welding, forgings and rolled products and discusses the relationship between the various NDT methods and their capabilities and limitations when applied to the detection of specifc discontinuities in metals. It discusses how mechanical testing is used to determine material properties. It provides the metallurgical knowledge required by the NDT technician to interpret and apply codes and standards. It is recommended that this unit be studied BEFORE any NDT method training course or AINDT exams are undertaken. MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION (MT) This unit covers performing Magnetic Particle Inspection procedures in a range of industrial applications. It covers the principles of magnetism and the associated application of magnetic particle testing techniques in the feld of non-destructive testing. Magnetic Particle Inspection is used to identify surface and near surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as steel and iron. PENETRANT TESTING (PT) This unit covers performing liquid penetrant testing in a range of industrial applications. It applies penetrant testing techniques to fabrications, structures and components across a wide range of industries. With penetrant testing the object is coated with a visible or fuorescent dye solution. The excess dye is removed and the developer, which acts as a blotter is applied drawing penetrant out of imperfections open to the surface. With fuorescent dyes and the use of a ultra-violet light the imperfections can be clearly seen. With visible dyes the contrast between penetrant and developer is used. ULTRASONIC TESTING (UT) These units enable students to undertake the ultrasonic testing of materials in accordance with the requirements of national and international codes and specifcations and to interpret the results of such tasks. Ultrasonic inspection uses high frequency sound waves to detect imperfections or changes in properties within materials. It can also be used to measure the thickness of metallic and non-metallic materials. RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING (RT) This unit covers performing basic radiographic testing procedures in a range of industrial applications. It also involves operating radiographic testing equipment and applying the testing procedures learned. Training involves inspecting, interpreting, classifying and reporting on radiographic testing of fabrications, structures and components. Knowledge of metallurgy associated with the level of application in this unit is required. NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT) E N G I N E E R I N G
2 0 1 3 5 NON- DESTRUCTI VE TESTI NG (NDT) INDUSTRIAL RADIOGRAPHY & RADIATION SAFETY LICENCE (IRRSL) This training enables students to describe the principles of industrial radiographic testing, including a detailed description of hazards and safety procedures that must be applied when using X-ray and gamma ray equipment. This course meets the requirements for the Radiological Council of Western Australia and is a pre-requisite for sitting the exams to become licensed to use industrial radiographic equipment. IN-SERVICE INSPECTION OF PRESSURE EQUIPMENT This training course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to undertake this type of role in industry and meets the Australian Institute for the Certifcation of Inspection Personnel (AICIP) requirements for certifcation. The course focusses on areas of competency such as: Inspectors responsibilities and legislation; Safety requirements; Materials and Manufacturing requirements; Inspection methods; Common failures, causes and recommended actions; repairs, replacement and alterations; Re-rating requirements; Pressure equipment, boilers, piping, relief devices and controls; and Supervision and staf training. 6 WELDING SUPERVISION AND FABRICATION/WELDING INSPECTION E N G I N E E R I N G
