Classifications.

AIM

1. The aim of this agreement is to standardise the method of marking the military
load classification of bridges and rafts and the corresponding marking of vehicles.

AGREEMENT

2. Participating nations agree that the NATO Forces will use the system of marking
contained in this STANAG.

GENERAL

3. The method is a military method and is in no way intended to supersede existing
civilian method. Its implementation is compulsory on:

a. The vehicles in service in the different forces except for the vehicles
mentioned in paragraph 17;

b. Military constructed bridges, rafts and ferries during training and operations;

c. All operationally essential bridges in a NATO Joint Operations Area.

4. In peace time, the marking of existing infrastructure bridges is at national
discretion.

5. The standard load method on which the computation of the classification of
bridges, rafts and vehicles is based, is contained in STANAG 2021.

6. Special arrangements will be made by theatre commanders when vehicles or
bridges depart from the standards defined in the STANAG 2021 (vehicles of exceptional
width, low overhead bridges.).

MILITARY LOAD CLASSIFICATION SIGNS FOR BRIDGES AND RAFTS.

7. Types of military signs. Bridges and raft signs are of two types:

a. Circular signs on which is inscribed the bridge or raft classification and
which are to be used in operation on all bridges an rafts.

b. Rectangular signs which indicate particular restrictions (see paragraph 5)
and certain other technical information. Those signs are to be used only
when necessary.

8. Circular signs

a. Bridges and rafts are to have circular signs indicating the military bridge or
raft classification on normal crossing (see STANAG 2021) and for each
type of vehicle.
Note: military load classification during caution crossing and risk crossing
(see STANAG 2021) will not be marked, the bridge crossing in such
conditions will be carried out under the responsibility of the crossing site
commander.

b. Each circular sign is to be a minimum of 40 cm in diameter.

c. Each circular sign is to have a yellow background with the bridge or raft
classification and appropriate symbols inscribed thereon in black.

d. The legend is to be as large as the diameter of the sign allows.
Circular signs are of two types:

- Signs for one-way bridges.
- Signs for two-way bridges.

(1) Circular signs for one-way bridges.
For one-way bridges, the following sign is to be used, indicating both
classes, the wheeled classification being shown above the tracked
classification.

NB: the figures indicated on the different signs are but examples.

(2) Circular signs for two-way bridges.
For two-way bridges, the following set of circular signs are to be
used, indicating for each type of vehicle (wheeled and tracked) on
the left half the two way classification and on the right the one-way
classification.

NB: the figures indicated on the different signs are but examples.

9. Rectangular Signs

a. Rectangular signs are to be a minimum of 40 cm in height and width and
they are to have a yellow background with the appropriate description in
black letters, figures or symbols thereon. The inscription on the sign is to be
as large as the sign allows. Separate rectangular signs are to be used if
necessary to denote width limitations, height limitations or other technical
information. width and height signs are not required on bridges where
existing civilian signs are already in place and are sufficiently clear.

b. (1) The inscription on a sign (see paragraph 10.b) indicating the bridge
or raft width is to consist of two arrows and the bridge or raft width in
the metric system. These are to be arranged in a manner similar to
the following:

(2) If convenient, local commanders may add information in an other
system of measurement:

c. The inscription on a sign indicating the bridge overhead height is to consist
of two arrows and the bridge maximum height in the same manner as
indicated in sub-paragraph 9.b. These are to be arranged in a manner
similar to the following:

d. In case the bridge overhead height differs according to the different traffic
lanes, it will be arranged in a manner similar to the following:

e. As regards the signs indicating height and width, the military authorities
may, if they deem it convenient, use the Geneva convention of 1949 signs

10. Positioning of Signs

a. In addition to the bridge and raft signs outlined above, appropriate warning
signs are to be placed at the approaches to the bridges or rafting sites
when required.

b. Bridge or raft classification signs are to be placed at both ends of the bridge
or entrance of the loading area on the raft and in such a position as to be
clearly visible to all oncoming traffic.

c. Rectangular signs are to be placed on the bridge or at the entrance of the
loading area on the raft, immediately below the bridge or raft classification
sign.

d. Signs indicating height restrictions normally are to be placed centrally on
the overhead obstruction itself as in civilian practice.

11. Particular traffic conditions

a. In the case of damaged bridges where it is necessary to confine traffic to a
restricted lane, physical barriers such as posts, barrels etc. are to be used
to define the lane. Wherever necessary, such barricades are to extend
throughout the length of the bridge and along the approach roadways in
such a manner as to prevent traffic congestion. Adequate warning signs are
to be used.

b. In the case of certain bridges, heavier loads can be taken on a restricted
lane (such as the centre line of the bridge or the line of the rails on a road-
rail bridge) than on other lanes. These restricted lanes are to be marked by
painted lines, studs, etc. and rectangular explanatory signs are to be placed
at the approaches of the bridge.

MILITARY LOAD CLASSIFICATION SIGNS FOR VEHICLES

12. Signs to be Used on Vehicles. There are two types of vehicle signs.

a. Front Sign. Front signs are used on all vehicles, except trailers, to show the
classification of the laden vehicle or train (for details, see sub-
paragraphs 15.b.(1) and (2)). For the special case of unloaded tank
transporters and similar vehicles, or for unloaded or low loaded logistic
transportation vehicles, see sub-paragraph 15.b.(3).

b. Side Signs. Side signs are used on towing vehicles and trailers only, to
show the classification of the laden towing vehicles or trailers by
themselves (for details, see sub-paragraph 15.c.).

13. Shape, Size and colour of Signs

a. Both signs are to be circular in outline and marked in contrasting colours
consistent with camouflage requirements. Black figures on a yellow
background may also be used.

b. The front sign is to be 23 cm in diameter and the side sign 15 cm in
diameter. However, because of the shape of the vehicles, the front sign
may be reduced to 15 cm in diameter.

14. Positioning Signs on Vehicles

a. Front Sign. The front sign is placed or painted on the front of the vehicle,
above or on the bumper and below the drivers line of vision. Wherever
possible, it is to be on the right side of the vehicle facing forward.

b. Side Sign. The side sign is placed or painted on the right side of the vehicle
facing outwards.

15. Inscription on Sign

a. General. The inscription on the sign is to be as large as the sign allows.

b. Front Signs.

(1) The front sign is to indicate the laden solo class of the vehicle except
on towing vehicles and tank transporters, or similar vehicles.

(2) On towing vehicles tank transporters, or similar vehicles the font sign
is also to indicate the combined load class of the train. Above this
number, the letter C is to be written to distinguish this vehicle as
a towing vehicle.

Example of front sign for towing vehicle:

(3) On tank transporters or similar vehicles and on logistic transportation
vehicles, the fixed front sign is to show the maximum classification of
the laden vehicle. In addition and if convenient, one alternative front
sign may be carried which is to be placed so as to cover the fixed
front sign, to show the class of the vehicle in its present layout
(empty or partially loaded).

c. Side Signs. The side sign (used only by prime movers of combination
vehicles and trailers) indicates the laden solo class of the prime mover or
trailer.

16. Signs carried by Various vehicles

a. Single Vehicles. Single vehicles are to carry the front sign only.

b. Combination Vehicles. Towing vehicles are to carry both front and side
signs.

c. Trailers. Trailers are to carry side signs only.

17. Vehicles to be marked. All vehicles in use by the NATO Armed Forces are to be
marked as given above except that the marking of the following is optional:

a. Vehicles of a gross weight of 3 tons or less.

b. Baggage or other pole type trailers with a rated capacity of 1.5 tons or less.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE AGREEMENT

18. This STANAG will be considered to have been implemented when the necessary
orders/instructions to adopt the method described in this Agreement have been issued to
the forces concerned.
