MAGAZINE TEXT

This magazine cover below from The Source magazine has a traditional line under the

heading which states the name of the magazine, qualifying the magazine as the bible of hip

hop music. The cover is designed with using rhetorical tools which culturally impress upon

the minds of the target audience, who are in this case, the hip hop fans. There is use of the

photographic rhetorical, which is an iconic representation of the hip hop scene showing a

popular star ‘The Game’ and consequently setting the agenda of attention on the discourse

about the star’s woes and resolutions. The saga about The Game is the main discourse of the

week in the magazine reportage. The Game is pictured holding a pistol to his head, as if to

commit suicide, yet the verbal rhetorical in the boldest fonts on the cover suggests that

suicide will not be star’s resolve.

Hip hop is stereotyped a drug and crime dominated music scene, championed by mostly

convicts and felons. Gun crime is spoken of with such esteem in mainstream hip hop as it

premiered from the heart of the poverty stricken American projects with Hispanics and blacks

predominantly, which are a haven of crime and capitals of murder. Devoted hip hop fans can

easily relate to the cultural denotation of hip hop through this pictorial representation on the

cover page.

The text we will infer to on this polysemic webpage is the video with a YouTube link which

features President Obama’s image as he speaks of the healthcare reform. The video is a
campaign for the new healthcare reform bill to be passed in the United States, which is the

subject of discourse in this text. There is presentational rhetorical quite significant in

analysing the discourse entailed in this text. The President has his sleeves folded, standing in

front of a podium with the great seal of the United States of America speaking

charismatically about how the status quo is defective and needing change.

There is use of the verbal rhetorical with the elevation of the President’s voice when

reiterating on the most important aspects of his discourse in an attempt to generate popular

interest towards the discourse. The United States of America has a system of healthcare

where the absolutely poor cannot afford healthcare as it needs one to pay insurance for it.

The bill would partake a large chunk of the taxpayers’ money to save the poor and edify the

health of the public with higher disposable income.

RADIO TEXT

http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/rnb

The first 33 seconds of the 04:56 podcast episode from the BBC 1Xtra RnB Top 5 is an

advertisement and text which we will infer in this discourse analysis. The text has verbal

repetition which introduces the type of radio program it is and that it is a download. The text

is produced for delayed consumption though it is broadcast live initially. It’s target audience

are the radio fans who will want to catch up with their favourite hip hop charts though they

may miss it on the live broadcast.

The songs are presented as the hottest , meaning an idea about public opinion is amplified in

the discourse regarding the RnB genre.
