Description:
This is a black and white fyer to promote a leadership conference for college graduating seniors.
Date:
5/7/14
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 10
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic fier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.
Process:
I drew sketches and then I created them in InDesign. The white text on black catches the attention as well as using
very large type for Leadership. The second in importance was gray/black so the movement in this piece went from
the left, then to the top where the image was and then down the page on the right side with the call to action
towards the bottom where they will remember the where and when and how to register. My white space is
grouped and it gives my eyes a rest between the heavy white text on black and the rest of the text. I also used
repetition to include a second gray box behind the date, time and place which I feel helped to unify the piece.

Logos
Description:
These are logos designed for a mobile web app that my husband is working on entitled: Teez the Moment.
People can take pictures of special moments and then immediately order a t-shirt with the picture on as a fun
remembrance of the occasion.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to ft a company or personal image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.
Process:
I used the pen tool in Illustrator to draw a female looking t-shirt and added text. I was told that it looked like
something for a breast cancer event and that it should look more unisex. I was discouraged, but went back to the
drawing board to try to come up with something more unisex. I found a male looking t-shirt and drew one of
those. Then I began playing around with colors and fnally came up with a color scheme that he and I both like.

Objectives:
Create a new logo to ft a company or personal image.
Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.
Process:
I designed the shelf and then I played around with the fonts a lot and ended up downloading the font Great
Vibes. I made my own texture using a pattern overlay in Photoshop and saved it as a .jpg fle and then placed it
in my InDesign fle. I wanted to use a brown line underneath for repetition from the table above and I decided
that it would look nice to have the text under it. I used a bullet for a separator. I added a tag line so clarify what it
is about.

Created a matching business card to go with my letterhead with a personally designed logo.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Design a business card to match my letterhead
Use the basic tools in InDesign.
Process:
I used the same textured background with the same logo that I created for the stationary. I used the brown line
again on the back for repetition and to help unify the design. I varied the spacing on the back of the business
card to add a little more interest since the font that I picked had no styles and I didnt like it in red.

Program(s)/Tools:
Panasonic Lumix FMZ100 camera
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Use Photoshop to edit the image.
Process:
I had never used this camera before, or anything more than a point and shoot. I learned how to use the
metering to focus on foreground objects and background. I was really intrigued with this plant and decided I
wanted to use it in my project and I used the colors in the photo (analogous: yellow, lime, green). I used Photoshop
and adjusted levels, vibrance and sharpness to make it really pop. I decided to use rectangles in the color scheme
colors (muted a little). I decided not to put the borders all the way around the picture to use asymmetry. I decided
to add a yellow stroke on the title text to add contrast and draw more attention to the title text.

Web Page
Description:
This is a web page detailing the design process for my logo project. We learned a little bit of HTML and CSS.

Program(s)/Tools:
Notepad++
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple fles in a zipped folder to attach as one fle.
Process:
I used Notepad++ to do this project. I inserted my logo image into the html and styled my page using an
external CSS sheet. I wrote a paragraph about the scope of the project and the process of picking the colors. I
created a bulleted list outlining the steps of the logo creation. Then I opened my logo in Photoshop and used
the eyedropper tool to fnd out what the hexadecimal codes were for the colors, but decided to choose a
lighter orange color for the background. I decided to use the sans-serif font for the body and the serif font for
the headings.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
Cannon MP 170
Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.
Process:
I scanned in the images from an exercise in the Photoshop Book that I teach from. I chose the green color because
it went well with the pictures that I used. I liked the white contrast and thought it had a summer-like feel to it. I like
the repetition and contrast of the white boxes. I like the contrast of the heavy Britanic Bold font and the Arial font
for the rest.

This is part one of a two-part course using
Photoshop CS5.
Students will learn how to crop photos, resize
them and format edges. We will learn how to use
selection tools, add and subtract from a selection
and transform objects. We will learn to work with
layers, use eraser tools, create layer masks,
make level adjustments and opacity changes,
apply layer styles and use the clone stamp tool.
We will create a composite by combining several
photographs. We will create gradients, paint and
draw with various brushes, use custom shapes
and sample colors with the eyedropper tool.
Must have good basic computer skills.

Montage
Description:
This is an inspirational photo montage using masks to blend images together.
Date:
5/30/14
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 10
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers.
Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use flters.
Apply appropriate typography.
Process:
As I was going through pictures this one seemed to feel right. I had taken it an angle so I had to rotate it. I
found a wedding picture that I liked and overlapped them and then used a mask on both of them to blend
them together. I decided to use a black background to show a lot of contrast so that the couple would really
stand out. I found the quote that I wanted and used a script font and a larger size to make it stand out from
the rest of the text. I liked the gold color for the text and thought it blended well with the colors in the temple,
yet contrasted enough with the black to stand out, and give a rich tone to it. (I only used a border here to
distinguish it from the background.)

Brochure
Description:
This is a brochure promoting fun activities on Catalina Island by sharing a little of my experience, specifcally riding
Segways and parasailing.
Date:
7/11/14
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 10
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate 4 quality images, clipping one in Photoshop and wrapping text around it.
Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs, headers, and sub headers.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process:
I decided to create a brochure promoting fun activities on Catalina Island using photos from a recent trip. I created
a new logo in Illustrator and drew sun and waves, which is part of the Catalina experience. I inserted a photo with
a full bleed on the front cover. I decided to put the Segway article and picture on the inside fap, with the grand
fnale, parasailing on the inside with a large photograph and the article on the right. I inserted the clipped image
of the sail in the upper right corner of the text. On the back panel, I listed other fun activities to do on the island
and a picture of the Catalina coastline.
