2. FUNCTIONAL NORMATIVE REQUIREMENTS
2.1 Operative environment
Continuous protection from corrosion of a buried pipeline or of plant piping is
obtained by coating its welded joints.
The materials used for coating welded joints can be used in a service
environment featuring attack by chemical and by microbiological agents and
reaching temperatures up to 60C.
2.2 Functional requirements
2.2.1 Type of joint coating
Coating of joints shall be performed using the following materials:
Pipe joints with coating thickness >
500 m
plastic tapes
Pipe joints with coating thickness up
to 500 m
high thickness surface tolerant paint ,
with very low solvent level ( < 3% in
weight)
2.2.2 Plastic tape type joint coatings
Plastic tape joint coatings shall be made of:
- one layer of epoxy primer
- one layer of anti corrosion tape
- one layer of tape providing mechanical protection.
Plastic tape coatings shall comply with the provisions of UNI 10190 Std.
2.2.2.1 Primer

2.2.2.2 Anticorrosion tape
The plastic anticorrosion tape must ensure protection from corrosion.
The tape is composed of a polyolefine based support and by an adhesive layer
either rubber and synthetic resins based or bituminous rubber based.
Before the coating is applied the thickness of the support and of the adhesive
shall be those specified in the relevant Data Sheet.
The tape must be supplied in rolls wound on a cardboard core having a
minimum diameter of 3 in. At about 5 m distance from the tape end a colour
mark shall indicate this distance.
Width and length of the tape rolls to be supplied shall be indicated by the
Contractor.
The tape must be compatible with the primer properties and with those of the
tape providing mechanical protection.
2.2.2.3 Mechanical protection tape
This plastic tape shall guarantee mechanical protection and is usually
differentiated from the anticorrosion tape by its higher thickness and different
colour.
Before the coating is applied the thickness of the support and of the adhesive
shall be those specified in the relevant Data Sheet.
The tape must be compatible with the properties of the anticorrosion tape.
The supply shall be performed similarly to the anticorrosion tape.
2.2.3 Surface Tolerant paint type joint coatings
The joint coatings made with surface tolerant paint are obtained using a high
thickness paint with very low solvent level (<3% in weight) for single layer
application. The Contractor shall submit to the Company for approval the
product he intends to use..
2.2.4 Preservation of the coating materials
Materials to be used for coating shall be stored as follows in the Contractor's
Works or on site:
The containers holding liquid products shall be kept hermetically sealed, and be
protected from solar radiation and kept at a proper distance from heat sources
and from those Works areas where free flames are used.
The containers shall not be in direct contact with the ground.

Solid products shall be kept in sheltered areas to controlled temperature and
humidity.
Products supplied packaged shall be kept in their packagings until they are
used; any handling shall be carried out taking care not to damage these
packages.
Packaged materials shall not be placed nor stored on wet or damp surfaces or
environment, nor in places that can be flooded or are near to possible sources of
fire.
All products that become altered for any reason shall be removed from the
manufacturing areas.
2.2.5 Cleanliness degree
Surfaces to be cleaned shall be carefully checked in accordance to ISO 8504 - 1
in order to choose the most suitable cleaning cycle.
Welded joints to be coated using plastic tapes or surface tolerant paint shall
have surfaces with a cleanliness degree corresponding as a minimum to grade
Sa 2 of ISO 8501 - 1 Std.
The surfaces of welded joints may be either blast cleaned or brush cleaned.
On the welded joint surfaces there shall never be any residue of the pipe
coating, of welding, oil or grease or other foreign matter.
2.2.6 Plastic tape application
The primer may be applied by brush as long as a uniform and adherent coating
is obtained, without wrinkles, folds, cavities or cuts.
Tapes shall be applied in spirals under tension, in order to obtain a 50%
overlapping. At both their ends the tapes shall overlap the pipe coating for at
least 20 cm.
2.2.7 Surface tolerant paint application
Surface tolerant products shall be applied immediately after joint cleaning
operations, using either a spray gun or a brush.
At both ends, the surface tolerant paint shall overlap the pipe coating for at least
5 cm.

2.3 Safety
It is the Contractor's duty to observe the regulations on safety and health
applicable to his premises. Special consideration is to be given to the
following:
- painting products mixing and handling shall be performed in areas where air
can circulate freely and that are distant from zones of danger;
