1 Purpose of document
This document describes the upgrade process from the equipment ETL500 Rel.3 to ETL600.
2 General
The new ETL600 boards are designed in a way that they could be inserted in an operational
ETL500 Rel.3 system in order to upgrade the ETL500 into an ETL600 by replacing a minimal
amount of cards.
For ETL500 to ETL600 upgrade system with a nominal carrier frequency bandwidth B
N
of 8 kHz or
4 kHz, the central processor card P4LQ has to be replaced either by a P4LT or a P4LU. The
existing Tx-filter, Rx-filter and RF-hybrid may be reused. This is also valid for the 80 W option.
For ETL500 to ETL600 upgrade system with a nominal carrier frequency bandwidth B
N
of more
than 8 kHz, the central processor card P4LQ has to be replaced either by a P4LT or a P4LU.
Additionally the Tx filter E5LA/E5LB has to be replaced by E5TX, the Rx filter P4LR by P4RX, the
RF-hybrid P3LB/P3DA by P3LE.
If an ETL580 (80 W) is upgraded to an ETL600 with a nominal carrier frequency bandwidth B
N
of
more than 8 kHz, the second Tx filter E5LA/E5LB has to be replaced by E5TX and the combiner
P3LC/P3LD by P3LG.
NSK5 modules in the ETL600 rack are no longer supported and have to be removed. The NSK600
modems integrated on P4LT/P4LU may be used instead.

ESD protection

Caution
The modules in this equipment contain devices, which can be damaged by
electrostatic discharges. Appropriate measures must be taken before
unpacking modules or withdrawing them from equipment racks. Essential
precautions to prevent ESD damage when handling or working on modules
are grounding straps for technical personnel and the provision of anti-static
workbenches. Modules may only be shipped either in their original packing
or installed in equipment racks.
ESD

Insertion and removal of plug-in modules
Neither removing nor inserting of modules is permitted during power-up of
the equipment. Preceding to plug in and out of modules the power supply
of the equipment has to be switched OFF.
An exception to this is the Rx filter P4RX, which has to be removed and
inserted while the equipment remains powered when performing the Rx
level adjustment procedure.
Caution

3 Upgrade procedure for a nominal carrier frequency bandwidth B
N

of 8 kHz or 4 kHz
3.1 General description
The existing Tx- and Rx filters and the RF hybrid shall be re-used, i.e. the nominal carrier
frequency bandwidth B
N
is limited to 4 or 8 kHz, and the nominal carrier frequency range remains
the same as for the existing RF filter set. This is also valid for the 80 W option.
3.2 Hardware required for upgrading
P4LT or P4LU
Optional set of connecting cables, if required
NSK5 modules to be removed, as they are replaced by the internal NSK600

3.3 Procedure
1. Check the tuning according to Appendix in ETL500 manual: "Tuning Instructions for RxRF
Filter P4LR" (1KHL015117-EN), "Tuning Instructions for TxRF Filter E5LA/E5LB"
(1KHL015570-EN) and "Tune RF hybrid P3LB, if present" according to "Programming and
Testing Instructions ETL500" (1KHL015940-EN). Adjust if necessary.
2. Produce a config file *.mmi for the existing ETL500 by means of the MMI500. A hardcopy on a
printer might be helpful.
3. If G4AI (teleprotection) is used: make a firmware upgrade of all G4AI by means of MMI500
version 3.20 or higher.
See instructions in paragraph 5. Manual Firmware upgrade using MMI500.
4. If O4LE is used: make a firmware upgrade of all O4LE by means of MMI500 version 3.20 or
higher.
See instructions in paragraph 5. Manual Firmware upgrade using MMI500.
5. Start the HMI600 and enter offline the configuration of ETL600 (re-enter data manually from
step 2 as far as applicable).

If as receive filter P4LR instead of P4RX is used, please select P4RX in
HMI600, Configure system / Equipment settings.
Note:

HMI600 uses always fn =nominal frequency for Rx and Tx frequency
settings. ETL500 used the center frequency for double channel APLC. In
order to select the correct Rx and Tx frequency in the ETL600, 4 kHz has to
be subtracted from the ETL500 frequency configuration. For single channel
APLC, the frequency could just be used in the HMI600 without modification.

6. Replace P4LQ by P4LT or P4LU.

The 5R and the 3R blanking plates on the left and right side of P4LQ must
be removed. They are no longer used, as the front plate P4LT/P4LU is 14R
wide.
Note:

Please use caution when inserting or removing P4LT/P4LU. These units
have EMC springs on every side.

7. Remove all G4AI and O4LE and re-insert them at the corresponding slot positions of ETL600
as given by the HMI600 (see also ETL600 manual).
8. For all O4LE cables: Change the wiring according to the new port assignment of the
teleoperation ports.
9. Remove all NSK5 modules, if any. They have to be replaced by 6R blanking plates. Change
the wiring to the P4LT/P4LU according to the configuration shown in the HMI600.
10. Download the ETL600 configuration onto the ETL600 by means of the HMI600.
11. Tune and test according to ETL600 Tuning and Testing instructions as per ETL600 manual,
except Tx- and Rx filters. Especially the Adjust Tx RF level, Adjust Tx Alarm level and
Adjust Rx RF level procedures have to be performed.

"Tuning Instructions for ETL600 Rx RF filter P4RX", "Tuning Instructions for
ETL600 Tx RF filter E5TX" and "Settings for ETL600 RF hybrid P3LE / Tune RF
hybrid P3LE" are not applicable if the ETL500 Tx filter E5LA/E5LB, Rx filter P4LR
and hybrid P3LB are re-used. The tuning was already done in step

For adjusting the Tx RF level: measure the test tone level at the RF line socket
(X175) via an attenuator with impedance according to the ETL system impedance
(75 of 125 Ohm) and a level meter set to the same input impedance (the
attenuator is required to prevent overdriving of the level meter). The RF line
monitor socket on the front plate of the hybrid P3LB has not the same impedance
and level as the RF line monitor socket of the hybrid P4LE.
Note:

When performing Adjust Rx RF level with HMI600 tuning and testing, check the
box Rx Filter P4RX plugged if the receive filter P4LR is used. Remove P4LR
when P4RX is required to be removed during the adjustment. Do the adjustment
at the potentiometer Rx Level on P3LB instead of P3LE as described by
HMI600.
Note:

12. If necessary, perform a firmware update to the latest ETL600 release according to
1KHW001496: Firmware Download for ETL600.

5 Manual Firmware upgrade using MMI500
The firmware upgrade of the existing modules G4AI and O4LE may be effected with the MMI500
according to document 1KHL016378-EN "Firmware Download: <ETL500 Rel.3 >" in the ETL500
manual.
In particular:
Deselect the field "Automatic firmware update".
Do a firmware update by selecting the slot where the card to be updated is plugged, and select
"Start firmware download".
Select the firmware. The new firmware is stored in the installation directory of HMI600,
subdirectory "firmware/release x.x.x" (latest release has highest number).
Note: The install directory is per default: C:\Program Files\ABB\HMI600\
Repeat this step for all O4LE and G4AI.

The firmware upgrade of the existing modules G4AI and O4LE may also be
effected with the HMI600 according to document 1KHW001496-EN
Firmware Download for ETL600 in the annex of the ETL600 manual.
