Maldivian delegation visits branch.

The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) Colombo Branch warmly
welcomed the Honorary President Mr. Abdullah Ali and the Honorary
Secretary General Mr. Abdul Razak Ibrahim to the branch during their
visit to Sri Lanka on the 10
th
of June 2014.

Discussions and presentations were conducted by the Branch Executive
Officer (BEO) and the management staff on our Way Forward Beyond Re
engineering (WF BRE) process and th current Income Generation
Projects (IGP) of the branch.

Both Mr. Abdullah Ali and Mr. Abdul Razak Ibrahim particularly showed
interest on the IGPs conducted by the branch for self-sustainability.

Basic first aid training for Junior and Youth
member

First aid is the immediate care given to a person who has been
injured or has been suddenly ill. It includes both self-help and home
care if medical assistance is not available or delayed. First aid
knowledge not only means the difference between life and death,
but also helps to determine the importance of first aid treatment
during an emergency situation.

First aid knowledge and skills promote safety awareness at home,
work and on the streets, through studying first aid a person should
be prepared to assist others during emergency situations.

The SLRCS Colombo Branch conducted first aid trainings for Junior
Red Cross (JRC) and Youth members on the 27
th
, 28
th
and 29
th
of
June 2014 at the branch premises in Kottawa.

The 47 students were educated on Incident Management, Casualty
Management, Cardio Pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Recovery
Positions, Hypoxia and other important s that will be valuable in day
to day life theories by 5 of our best instructors. Practical sessions
were also conducted for these students so that they would have a
better understanding in First Aid.







The main objective of this training session was to educate these JRC
and Youth members in proper handling of emergency situations in
day to day life.

The SLRCS, Colombo branchs dissemination programmes aim to promote understanding of the Red Cross
and the Red Crescent movement, fundamental principles, humanitarian values, International Humanitarian
Law (IHL) and the emblem use among its activities. This is to ensure that these ideals, are understood,
respected and applied throughout the Colombo District/ Sri Lanka so as to promote ownership, acceptance
and support of SLRCS activities by stakeholders, partners and the community at large.

Dissemination programmes were conducted by the branch to various, Red Cross Units of the Colombo
District during the Month of May 2014 as shown in the diagram above and also conducted dissemination
programmes for the students who pariticpated on the Basic First Aid training programme, the teachers and
the students of the Vocational Training Centre and for the Junior Red Cross (JRC) circles in the month
June 2014 where a total number of 437 students participated.

The branch also conducted external dissemination programmes to various external organizations and clubs
in order to promote the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Other Red Cross activities.

The SLRCS Ambalangoda Unit conducted a religious programme (Pinkama) at the Ambalangoda Sri
Sudharmaramaya temple on the 11
th
of May 2014. There were 200 plus participants present for this
programme. The Unit also conducted another religious programme (Dhamma preaching) on the 01
st
of June
2014 where a total number of 120 participants were present.

Meanwhile the SLRCS Heraliyawala, Kolonnawa and Ambalangoda Unit conducted their monthly unit
meetings on the 28
th
and the 30
th
of June 2014. A total number of 86 participants were present for the
meeting.

The main objectives of these meetings were to discuss the monthly activities conducted by the relevant
units and to organize activities that are to be conducted for the coming months.

Distribution of NFRI for flood affected victims

The SLRCS Colombo Branch distributed Non Food Relief Item (NFRI) packs which had towels, toothbrushes,
soap, shampoo, sarongs and other essential items to 55 Nos. of displaced people in Artigala on the 20
th
of
June 2014 due to the floods caused by the heavy monsoonal rain fall during the month of June 2014.

The NFRI packs were distributed at the Artigala Temple where the BEO and other officials of the SLRCS
Colombo Branch were present.







Restoring Family Links programmes

Every year a huge amount of people are separated by disasters, migration and
conflicts resulting in people to lose contact with their loved ones not knowing
whether they are safe. This programme helps restore family connections through the
Red Cross Network

The Branch conducted a Restoring family links programme on the 25
th
of May 2014
and June in area of Heraliyawala where 13 Number of participants were present.

Meanwhile 2 more programmes were conducted on the 08
th
and the 15
th
of June
2014 in the areas of Wivekarama and Ambalangoda. There were a total number of
102 participants who were present in the programme.









Kekulu programmes

The SLRCS Heraliyawala Unit organized an art competition on the 14
th
of July 2014
at the Heraliyawala Community Centre to commemorate the World Blood Donor Day.
There were a total number of 32 participants present for the competition.

The BEO and other officials of the SLRCS Colombo Branch were present to give away
gifts and tokens of appreciation to the participants.
