INTRODUCTION

This workbook is a useful tool for all ages, especially for students
who need extra practice in addition, subtraction and problem solving.
Practicing addition and subtraction over and over again does not
need to be a boring chore. It becomes more motivating when applied
to a more sophisticated task.
Finding the sizes of angles is both interesting and useful, it is
challenging and age appropriate. Students can work out sums and
differences mentally, use pen and paper method or use a calculator.
The activities give students numerous opportunities to think, solve
problems, choose the best strategy to find the size of an angle and
use the easiest computation method to get a fast answer.
All the angles have the correct measurement so the students can
find the sizes of angles by measuring them using a protractor or by
working them out mathematically and then checking them with a
protractor. The degrees of the angles are provided in multiples of 5
to make it easier to measure the angles accurately.
There are 12 questions and 12 answers on each page to make this
workbook compatible with the Mini LUK self checking system
(except for pages 1 to 4).
Students have a choice to write the answers to each question (total)
and tick the answers or place the LUK tiles on the answers in the
Mini LUK box. When the Mini LUK box is turned over a pattern is
formed, which will tell the student, All is well, the answers are
correct.

Mini LUK Self Checking System

The advantage of the LUK system is that the students can work independently,
check their answers and correct their mistakes.
The students like to work with the tiles, searching for the numbers and looking
forward to be rewarded by a pattern. They think of LUK as a game.

How to use the mini LUK System.

The lid of the mini LUK tray (box) is divided into 12 blank squares, the base is
divided into 12 numbered squares. There are 12 numbered tiles to work with.

Step 1.
Place the 12 tiles in sequence from 1 to 12 into
the blank squares on the lid of the miniLUK box.

10 11 12

10 11 12

or
Place the 12 tiles in sequence from 1 to 12
on the table ready to be used.

Step 2.
Choose your worksheet (page). Pick up tile number 1
and place it under or next to the number 1 problem.
Solve the problem, and look for the answer at the bottom
of the page e.g.

The number under the answer (degrees) is the code

number to look for in the grid of the LUK box. Place the
tile on that number. Take the tile number 2 , look for
the answer and the LUK code number and place the tile
on that number. Then work out all the problems, find the
code numbers and place the tiles on the correct squares.
Step 3.
When finished and all tiles are placed on the correct
squares, close the lid of the box and turn the Mini LUK
over sideways. Open the lid and a geometrical pattern
will be formed by the back of the tiles.

10 11 12

10

12

15 11

10

Step 4.
Match the pattern in the box with the pattern on the bottom of the page. If the
patterns match, well done! You have not made a single mistake! If the pattern is
not quite correct, but is recognisable, you have still done a good job. Colour the
shapes to match the two patterns.

ANGLES in a TRIANGLE
Triangles are often marked with capital letters.
This triangle is written as ABC.

A triangle has three sides,

three angles and three vertexes.

Angles in a triangle add up to 180,

b

80

70

30

70 + 30 + 80 = 180

a + b + c = 180

The sum of the three angles in a triangle is 180.

70

30

To find the unknown angle in a

triangle the sum of both known
angles has to be taken from 180;
thus 180 - (70 + 30) = 80
or 180 - 70 - 30 = 80,
angle a = 80.

Grouping according to side length.

Equilateral triangle.
All sides and all angles in an equilateral triangle
are the same (equal);
60

60

VI

thus
180 e 3 = 60, each angle = 60
60

Angles in Triangles

Jays Education

Isosceles triangles.
Two sides of an isosceles triangle have the same length,
they are equal.
The base angles (opposite
the equal sides) of an isosceles
a
triangle are equal.

40

90

To find the unknown angle subtract the two known angles from 180.
180 - (80 + 80) = 20 or 180 - 80 - 80 = 20
To find the two unknown equal angles subtract
the known angle opposite the base from 180,
and divide the difference by 2.

80
80

180 - 100 = 80
80 2 = 40
Each angle = 40 .

100
a

Scalene triangles.
All sides and all angles in a scalene triangle
are different. Each angle has
a different size.

30

30

Angles in Triangles

Jays Education

40

To find the unknown angle in a scalene

triangle subtract the sum of the two
known angles from 180; thus
180 - (30 + 40) = 110
or 180 - 30 - 40 = 110.

VII

Grouping according to angle size.

Right-angled triangle.
Right-angled triangle is a triangle
with one of its angles = 90.
The
symbol used represents 90.

30

To find the unknown angle

in a right-angled triangle subtract the known angle
and 90 from 180; thus
180 - (90 + 30) = 40 or

180 - 90 - 30 = 40, angle b = 80.

Right-angled triangle may be

isosceles or scalene.

90

90

Obtuse-angled triangle.
130

Obtuse-angled triangle is a triangle

with one of its angles greater then 90 (obtuse).
Obtuse-angled triangle may be scalene or isosceles.

An acute-angled triangle may be any of the triangles pictured above.

Exterior angle of a triangle.

Angles inside a triangle are called interior angles. The angles outside the
triangle are called exterior angles.
If one side of a triangle is extended an exterior angle is formed.
The adjacent interior angle (b)
and the exterior angle (d)
make up a straight angle,
they add up to 180.

c
a

c
40 140

Thus
30 + 150 = 180

b
a = 30

b = 150

Therefore a + b = 180

30 + 150 = 180

This is an important starting point of many angle size calculations.

c

40 d

To find the size of the

exterior angle take the
adjacent interior angle
from 180.

c

40

180 - 40 = 140, angle d = 140

Angles in Triangles

Jays Education

IX

140

To find the size of the

interior angle take the
adjacent exterior angle
from 180.
180 - 140 = 40, angle b = 140

80

60

140

In any triangle the exterior angle

is equal to the sum of the two
interior opposite angles.
d = 60 + 80 = 140, the exterior angle d = 140

80

60

To find the size of the exterior angle d

add the two internal angles (a + c).
e = 60 + 80 = 140,

angle d = 140

To find the size of the interior angle c

c

60

take the angle a (60) from the external

angle (140).
b

140

c = 140 - 60 = 80,

angle c = 80

To find the size of the interior angle a

80

take the angle c (80) from the external

angle (140).
b

140

a = 140 - 80 = 60,

angle a = 60

Constructing a 90 angled isosceles triangle.

1. Draw a straight line.
2. Mark point O on one side and point A on the other side.
3. Put the point of a compass on point O and draw a long arc to
cross point A.
4. With the same radius draw an arc from point A crossing the
first arc at point B.
5. Draw another arc (third) from point, B that will cross the first
arc further on at point C.
6. Draw an arc from point B and another one from point C.. Both
arcs must cross each other at point D.
Remember: all arcs must be of the same radius.
7. Join the point D with the point O and a right angle (90) has
been constructed.
8. Join point A with point E to construct a right angled triangle.
Both sides OE and OA are of the same length, therefore the formed
triangle is an isosceles triangle.

D
The triangle EOA is a right angled triangle
as well as an isosceles triangle.
EOA = 90,
AEO= 45,
OAE = 45
