LatelytherehasbeenrunningasortofseriesofOccultissuesunderthetitleofMan,
Myth,andMagicwhichisagoodexampleofwhatisdefinitelynotMyth,Manor
Magic(Ihavebeenkeepingtheseissuesfortherecordandtoillustratethewrong
ideasabroadabouttheOccult).

InoneofthesearticlesaboutMadameBlavatsky,theauthordidsaythatshesmoked
hashishformanyyears,longbeforeanynoticewastakenofthosethings.Ifshedid
this,andIbelieveshedid,(Iknewshesmokedbutnotpotorhashish)thenthatis
whereshecouldhavegottenalltheinsightthatpresumablywentintoherbooksand
writings.

Also,thereisanotherwell-knownbookcalledTheVarietiesofReligiousExperience
(whichIhavenotread)whichexperiencesIamtoldweregainedundertheinfluence

Ihavereasontobelievethatdrugsinrawformplayedapartinthepastpracticesof
theancientreligionsbutforsomeunknownreasonnorecordswereleftofthese
practices,althoughitisapparenttomeonordinarystudy.

ImentionallthisbecauseIwanttopointoutagaintoyoustudentsthatnodrugsare
necessaryforOccultworkordevelopment.

Muchto-dohasbeenmadelatelyaboutWitchcraftandmanywomenhavebeen
callingthemselveswitchesandsomemenwarlocksandmagicians.

What is a Talisman?

usedtheworldwideover,usedthroughoutallhistory,istheOccultToolcalleda
Talisman.

Theobjectofthisbookistodelienateasclearlyaspossible:WhataTalismanIS;

Whyofitall;Andtodelienateallthisasclearlyaspossiblesothatyoumayknow

OphielisbeginningtofindinthefurtherteachingoftheOccult,andwritingbookson

becauseifyouhavetwotruthsandtheyareabsolutelydifferent,wellthen,theyare
nottruths.TheOccultthenconsistsofendlessmultiplemanipulativemanifestations,
combinationsofafewbasictruths.Ofcourse,themultiplemanipulationsofthese
basictruthsdofillthewholeUniverse,andyounevercanpossiblyreachtheendof

AsIsaid,andIhavesaidthisbefore,thekindofOcculttruthsthatwearedealing
withpertainentirelytothePhysicalPlanemanifestations,thatis,themanifestations
outsideoftheoriginalWHATWASbeforethePhysical.ThepreviousExistencenow
appearsasasortofmentalideathatthereisanInnerUniverseandanOuter
Universe.Althoughthatisnotstatedveryclearlystill,trytograspthoseideasand

tostudynowareagainbaseduponthefewbasicOcculttruthsthatyouhad
previously.ThereareonlyfourForcesthatgovernthePhysicalPlaneUniverse.
ThereisactuallyafifthForce,butitisextremelyelusiveanddoesnotenterinto
ordinarycalculations,butyouwilluseitlateron.However,itsuseisveryephemeral,
andalthoughIhaveneverrunacrossanyexactdangers,Ialwayshavethefeeling
thatifthisfifthElementalForcewerereallyused,alotoftroublecouldcomeoutofit
unwantedtrouble.SojustbecontenttothinkaboutfourForces,andkeepinthe
backgroundofyourmindthatthereisafifth.

InthemanufactureofTalismans,asIsaid,youmusthavehadasuspicionthat
theseTalismanswerebaseduponthefourElementalForces,becausetherejust

actuallynothingbutbasicpatternsandmerelysuggestedideas.EachTalismanis

revealjustenoughtogetpeopleexcitedandkeeptherestofthestuffbackfor
himself,becauseInoticethatmanyofthetablesinmybookhavebeencorrected.I
imaginethatWestcottdidthecorrecting,andIbelievethatBarrettdeliberatelyputthe
wronglettersinthewrongplacesatthewrongtimestothrowthingsoff,but,asIsay,
somebodycorrectedthem.

Imaybealittleprematureatthispointinintroducingthesubjectofspirits,butIll

ontheseexternalthingsspiritsandtalismanstocontactthespiritsandtheyused

andallsortsofthingslikethat,whichwasofcoursetocapturetheattentionoftheir

IwillexplainalittlemoreaboutthenatureoftheAstralLight.Ihaveverygoodreason
tobelievethattheAstralLightiscomposedofalltheElementalForces,mergedinto
onething.Inmanyotherkindsofteaching,Occultteachings,thereisaconstant
referencetosomethingcalledPrana.IamthoroughlywellconvincedthatthisPrana
isanothernamefortheAstralLight.

Illexplainalittlemoreaboutthis.Yousee,asyoupenetratetheInnerPlanesand
comeintocontactwiththemyourself,theyareallfloodedwithlight.But,asIsaid
before,thislightvariesin,letussayintensityanddensity,andvaries,likeIsaid,
accordingtothedistance.Thesourceofthelightyouareexaminingatthatmoment
isawayfromthematerialEarthPlane.Ithereforesurmise,fromstudyingthe
statementsofmanydifferentteachersincludingEliphasLevi,thatthesedifferent
teachersenteredtheInnerPlanesatdifferentlevelsandtheysawtheAstralLightin
itsdifferentphasesordensities.Andthen,ofcourse,allthesedifferentpeoplegave
differentnamestothesamethingthattheycognizedatdifferentlevels.

IbelievethiswordPranacomesfromOrientalsources,while,inmyopinion,the
OrientalreligionsandpracticesareofnotmuchvaluetoWesternerslikeourselves.
OccasionallycertainindividualsandcertainbranchesofOrientalstudieshavebeena
littlemorepracticalthanothers.Andtheyhavegivennamestothisonethingthat
everybodyisinvestigating.Realizingastheydidthatthereweremanydifferent
phasesorformsoftheAstralLight,dependinguponwhereitwas,theyjustcalled
thewholeAstralLightmanifestation,inallitsphases,Prana.Anditseemstomethat
thisisquitesensiblebecausethisPranahas,attributedtoit,alltheother
characteristicsthatLevihasnamedandafewotheradditionalonesthatIamgoingto
nameorhavenamed.

IamsorryifIseemtobegettingoffthepathofTalismansbutIamnotreallybecause
basically,andImayrepeatthisagain,andifIdodontbeboredwithit,justreadit
overagaincalmlyuntilyouaresureyouunderstandit,allworkdoneonTalismansis
directlyconnectedwiththeAstralLight.Infact,youmightsaythatmakinga
Talisman,workingwithTalismans,studyingtheideasofTalismans,isoneofthe
mostpracticalapplicationsyoucanmake/doinregardtounderstandingthenatureof
theInnerPlanes,andthenatureofyourOccultstudiesinordertounderstandand
usetheseInnerPlanesandtheirForcestohelpyouliveyourphysicallifebetter.

TheInnerPlanesarefulloftheAstralLightanditmight,indeed,besaidthatthe
InnerPlanesconsistsolelyoftheAstralLight.Andalso,itcouldbesaidthatthe
materialEarthPlaneiscondensed,hardenedAstralLight,butIamnotprepared,
atthistime,toshowhowthetransitionismadefromInnerLighttoMaterialEarth.
TheonlyhintIhavetoworkonisthatthetransitionhassomething,some
connections,withthefivesensesandYOU.(Itmayseemasifwearegettingaway
fromthesubjectofTalismansbutwearenot.Whatuseisittotellyouhowtomakea
TalismanandnotwhatthePowerisbehinditwhytheTalismanshouldworkand
canwork,andthisiswhyOphielsinstructionsarevalidwhileothersjustblab
unglittering,unworkablegeneralities.)

IthinkIhadbettergivemoreinformationaboutthenatureoftheAstralLight,asthe
moreyouknowaboutitsnatureanditspowerthebetteryoushouldbeabletouseit
inmakingTalismans,andalsouseitinallotherdepartmentsofyourlife/livingonthis
outwardly,butshouldnotbedifficult,PhysicalPlane.

Iwouldliketocallyourattentiontothefactthatmanysuccessfulpeople,thatis
materiallysuccessfulpeople,havesucceededbecausetheywereabletosetup
currentsintheInnerPlaneAstralLightandthosecurrentstendtobringtothemlarge
measuresofthethingstheyaskfor,ordemand,ifyoulikethewordbetter.

Iwanttocallyourattentiontothefactthatthissuccessfulcurrentsettingisoften
doneunconsciouslyandincompleteignoranceofanyInnerPlaneconnections
whatever.

ThishardlyseemsfairinviewofthefactthatmanyworthypersonsandmanyOccult
studentsdonotseemtobeabletomaketheAstralLightworkforthematall.

Toproceed.WhenyoucreateaTalismanforacertainpurpose,whatyouaredoing
fundamentallyisattachingapiece(?)oftheAstralLighttothetalismanicobjectand
causingacurrentoftheAstralLighttoflowtowardthetalismanicobjectand,asyou
arewearingorpossessingtheTalisman,fromthetalismanicobjectintoyouraura,
whichwillstronglyinclinecircumstances,desiredcircumstances,tocomeabout,
dreamstocometrue,andyouhaveyourlifethewayyoudlikeittobe.

ThereisonemoresubjectIthinkIhadbetterintroduceatthispoint.Idontreally
knowverymuchaboutGod.ButIcanalsosaythatIdontthinkthatanyoneelse

andfightingandkillingandmurderingoverthenatureandideaofGodasyouwould
wanttofindinthehistoryoftheworld,andIdontwanttobeconnectedwiththat.I
dontmeantosayanythingtoupsetyou.Ifyouhavestrongconvictionsaboutcertain
ideasaboutGodthensticktothem.Iamonlytalkingthiswayinordertotrytoexplain
somethingabouttheinnernatureofthings.

YourecallthatpreviouslyIgave,inotherbooksandwritings,somematerialabout
thedemimonde,ahalfworld,ofwhichthisPhysicalPlaneisonehalfandtheInner
Planeistheotherhalf.This,ofcourse,isatheoryandIalsoexplainedabouttheories
youjustusethemforthetimebeinguntilyoufindmoretruthandthenyouusethat
asatheoryandsoonandsoon.Imerelyadvancetheideahere,andIdontinsist
uponanything,especiallyIdontinsistthatyoubelieveanythingIsayjustbecauseI

contemplation,IadvancethisideathatPranamaybetheagentofGodinthe
demimonde!

ThereissomeslightevidencealsothatathingcalledLogos,theword,coexistswith
Prana,anditmightbetherepresentativeofGodinthisouterworld,whereasGodon
theInnerPlanesisaquitedifferentthing.However,thereistoogreatamysterythere
andprobablyneverinthehistoryoftheworldwillitbesolved.Wecanlearnafew
thingsthatwecanapparentlygetsomeresultsfromandsothatisaboutallwecan
do.Andifyoudothisfornowthechancesaregreatthatsourcesofinspirationwill
openuptoyouandyouwillacquiremoreknowledgeasyoucontinueworking.

Iwanttocallyourattentiontothefactthatapparentlymanysuccessfulpeopleinthis
world,thatis,thosewhoaremateriallysuccessful,havesucceededingetting
currentssetupinthenearbyEthericPlane,EthericAstralPlane,ifyouwanttocallit
that,andthesecurrentsbringtothemlargemeasuresofthingsthattheyaskfor.Orit
couldbesaidthattheyWillfor,orthattheysendout,strongdesirepatternsfororfor
anyotherkindofideathatappealstothem.And,ofcourse,insettingupaTalisman,
thatiswhatyouaredoingbasicallyyouarestartingupacurrentcenteringuponthis
Talisman,whichcurrentscomesfromvariouspointsontheotherside(trytovisualize
Icomingfromallsources)andthesecurrentsflowtowardtheTalismanthatyou
made.TheythenapparentlycomethroughtheTalisman,asiftheTalismanwasa
kindofadoor,andenterintothisplaneinsomeform,probablyinamagneticform.
RememberatthispointhowIsaidinthebeginningintheoriginaldefinitionofa
Talismanthatitwassomethingpaidfor.Nowitisalittlebitclearerthattheformof
paymentcouldbethework,thedesire,theconcentrationandalltheotherthingsin
connectionwithdesireinwhatyouwantwhenyoumaketheTalisman.Inthatway
youpayfortheTalisman.

Theastrologicalconfigurationsmightormightnotbefavorabletoyourproject,so
remembertotrytofollowuptheideasofmakingyourTalismanunderfavorable
astrologicaltimes.Atleastmakethemduringthedayandthehouroftheastrological
forcethatisconnectedwiththenatureofthedesiresthatyouaremakingthe

ForsometimeIhavebeenincontactwithacharacter.Ihavenotbeenableto
penetrateveryfarintothenatureofthiscontactorthenatureofthepersonatthe
otherendofit.Ihavenoname,noaddress,nothing.Wheneverhefeelslikeit,he
contactsmeandhasalittlediscussionwithme,whichisaboutallIcanexpect.I
dontthinkthatheisamasterfromoutsidetheplanetsanywhere,buthedoes,every
nowandthen,giveasortofburstofknowledgewhichisveryinterestingand
comprehensiveandIamgoingtopassitonwithprobablyanincreasingfrequency,if
hecallsme.Iffornootherreasonthanthathestatesthesethingsinaslightly
differentmanner,andinthisslightlydifferentmannerittendstoilluminatethe
materialalittlebitmore.

TheAirPlanePhysicalUniverseisfulloflight[nowyousee,forexample,thisis
exactlywhatIsaidbeforemyself,butthefollowingisjustslightlydifferent],theAstral
Light.In,andthroughthislight,formsofthislightmove,live,andcountlesstypesof
beingsandForces.

Thesebeings,andForces,canbeattracted;andcaptured,byvariousdevices,
oneofwhichiscalledaTalisman.ThesedevicesarelocatedonthisPhysicalPlane
andfromthisplanetheyreachoutintotheInnerPlanesandprovidea
path/connectionondownfromthemuntilgroundedontothisplane.

EachoftheseForces,andthebeingsconnectedwiththem,havetodowithsome
particularspaceenergyconnectedwithsomeparticularfacetofhumanlife/living,and
itsattentionscanbegainedandtheenergyofitsparticularForceconcentratedby
you.

Wealldomuchofthiscontactinganyhoweveryday,everyhour,everyminute,
withoutknowingwearedoingit.Wehavedevelopedwordsandphrases,even
prayers,tohelpourselvesconnectwiththeseinnerpowers.

OurthoughtsarepowerfulTalismans,especiallywhenkeptinacheerful,constructive
line.Cheerful,optimisticthoughtsareourbestTalismans.Infact,theobjectof
creatingandusingaTalismanistostrengthenandupliftyourthoughts/thinkingand
toreviveyourimagination,soittrulypictureswhatyouwanttoachieve,orreceive,
fromtheseinnerpowersandbroughtthroughintoyourPhysicalPlanesphere.

IntheoldOccultdays,muchwasmadeoftheknowledge(?)beliefthatifaTalisman
wasmadeproperly,itcontactedanactualgod,orasubdivisionthereof,andthisgod
didthenecessarydesiredworktheTalismanwascreatedforwithouthavingtobe
toldeverylittlethingtodo.

Thisdesiredactionis,basically,duetothestickythreadsofastralmatter.Allthings
areconnectedtogether,especiallyfromthisPhysicalPlaneonin.The
desire/impulsetravelsfromyoutotheinnerplacewheretheprototypeenergiesof
yourdesiresarestored.And,contactoncemade,thedesirefulfillmentforcesflow
backdowntoyourenvironment,andtendtocreateandreinforcecreatetobring
abouttheexactsetofphysicalconditionswhichwillcausethedesiretocometoyou
thedesiredphysicalcircumstancesyoumadeandinvokedtheTalismanfor.

JustwhataretheabovementionedForcesandwhyaretheyabletodothedescribed
work?Mostallthisinformationwasgiveninpreviousbooksandlessons.Itisnow
necessarytorepeatmuchofiteventhoughyoumayhavecovereditbefore.Ifyou
havecoveredthismaterialbefore,thenthenewtalismanapplicationwillbeeasyfor

SonowItrustyouseethatyourOccultKnowledgerequirementsareextremely
simpleontheonehand,andyettheyareextremelycomplexontheother.Youwill
neverreachtheendofthecomplexities.YoucanacquiretheKnowledgeeasily,but
youwillneverreachanendtotheapplicationoftheKnowledge.

ElementalForceswhichareAir,Fire,Water,andEarth.

reachtous,BUTwemustmakethefinalphysicaleffortontothisfinalPhysicalPlane.

consistsofwater.

NowtheElementalForceofWaterhasqualitiesverysimilartotheseofphysical

thattheyareonlyForcesandthatshouldsettlethematter.However,Iamgoingto
refertothesethingsfromtimetotimesokeepitinmindthatthisisnotanyworship
idea,itismerelyforillustrationandstorytelling.Iwillsayherethateachofthese
InnerPlaneshasagodattachedtoitandrememberthatthisgodisaForceasIsaid.
IwontgotoofarintothisnowbutIwillnameafew.

TheGodoftheEarthPlaneisPluto.Plutoisthatcreatureyouseeinilllustrations
withhornsandbatswingsandatailthathaswhatlookslikeaspearheadonitand
hasanimalhoovessometimes;therearenoclear,distinctpicturesofit.Theoldtime
artistsusedtheirfancytoimpresspeoplebut,neverthelessthatcreatureisPluto.And
Plutoisnotthedevil.Thereisntanydevil,thereisntanySatan.Irepeat,that
creatureisdefinitelynotthedevil.

NowthePlaneabovethisone,ofcourse,istheEthericPlane,followedbytheAstral
Plane.InthematterofGreekmythology,thedistinctionbetweenthesePlanesisnot
quiteassharpasthedistinctionIhavejustgivenitwhichismoreorlessaHindu
idea.ButthisnextareaonuptotheUpperAstral,wemightsaythattheMental
Plane,isruledbyNeptuneandNeptuneitissaidruleswaterandtheGreeks
mistakenlygavehimtheideaoftheoceansandtheseasbeingwaterbuttheydont
meanthatatall.ThewaterthatNeptunerulesisthewaterthatIdescribedtoyouthat
constitutestheInnerPlaneswhichisalsolightbutitisasortofliquidlight.Thatisthe
waterthatisruledbyNeptune.

ThePlaneabovetheWaterPlaneiswheretheAstralLightisthestrongestand
actuallydoeslookalittlebitlikefire,especiallywhenithassomecolorsinit,and,of
course,thatisthePlaneofFire,theElementalForceofFireandtherulerofthat
PlaneisnamedHephaestus,buthisRomannamewasVulcan,sowewillcallhim
Vulcan.HeisthesonofJupiteralthoughinsomeotherlegendsIhaveheardhim
referredtoasabrother.HeistheruleroftheElementalForceofFire.

ThesymboloftheFirePlaneis,ofcourse,atriangle.Thetrianglewillhavetoappear
inyourTalismans.

Nowforthetimebeing,justkeepthesethingsinmindandseeifyoucanfindsome
additionalmaterialonthesedifferentgodcharacters.

NowwecometothePlaneofAirwhichisruledbyZeus.ThesymbolofAirisacircle
androundthingsaremoveableand,asyouknow,wheelsareround,everythingthat
rollsormovesbyitself.Idontmeanmanmovingwithhislegs,Imeanthatthingsthat
movehavewheelsandwheelsareround,soaroundcircleisthesymbolofAir.Now,
mostofyourTalismanswillhaveacircleinthemandthatisbecauseyouwantthe
Talismantobeamovingthing.IfyoumadeaTalismancompletelyofsquaresyou
wouldnthaveanythingmoveable.Butforheavenssakedontexperimentonthese
differentthingsnowuntilyouknowmore.

Asarule,yourbasicTalismanisroundontheoutsideandthentheseothersymbols
shouldbeplacedinwardlyfromitondownthecenter.Actually,thecentershouldbea
square.

NowwewillreferbrieflytotheElementofAkasha,theElementalForceofAkasha,
andthatisasortofastrangeshape.Itisliketwoconvexcurvesofvarioussizesbut
morelikelytobeanarrowone.IhaveneverheardofitbeingusedinaTalismanand
ifithaseverbeenuseditcertainlyhasntbeenputdowninanyofthebooksthatI
haverunacross.IhaveanideathatitisnotusedinTalismansatall.Becausethe
symbolitselfrepresentsnothing,nothing,andofcourseyouarenotdealingwithno
things,youaredealingwithsomethings.

astrologicalsymbolofthegodthatrulesthatparticularPlaneagain,butkeepit
distinctiveinyourmindsothatitalmostseemstobeadistinctionwithoutadifference
betweentheElementalForceandthePlane.
Making a Birth Talisman

Actually,itisalittlemorecomplicatedthanthis,butIdontthinkthatonthisfirst
roundofTalismanmakingwewillgointothefinerpoints.

ThePlanetswhichruletwosignswillhaveontheTalismansomeindicationofthe
Elementalnatureoftheastrologicalsigns.Forexample,AriesisaFiresign;Marsisa
FirePlanet;sotheTalismanasshownisbasicallycorrect.

MarsalsorulesScorpioandScorpioisaWatersign,sotheScorpiobirthTalisman
shouldhaveonitsomewheresomeindicatoroftheWaterpart,aswellastheFire
