3. Hold the Transmitter/Receiver with attached brackets up to the rack and move it vertically until
rack holes line up with the bracket holes, then insert and tighten the four screws holding the
brackets to the rack.
WARNING
The rack or cabinet should be adequately secured to prevent it from becoming unstable and/or
falling over. Devices installed in a rack or cabinet should be mounted as low as possible, with the
heaviest devices at the bottom and progressively lighter devices installed above.
The F-RF-TX Series is Class 1 laser devices. Avoid direct eye exposure to the beam coming from the
transmit port!

CAUTIONS
1. Ensure the power source circuits are properly grounded then use the power cord supplied with
the Transmitter/Receiver to connect it to the power source.
2. If your installation requires a different power cord than the one supplied with the
Transmitter/Receiver, be sure the cord is adequately sized for its current requirements. In
addition, be sure to use a power cord displaying the mark of the safety agency that defines the
regulations for power cords in your country. The mark is your assurance that the power cord
can be used safely with the Transmitter/Receiver.
3. When installing the Transmitter/Receiver, the AC outlet should be near the

4. If +5V voltage (+5V READS) >0.5V alarm.
If -5V voltage (-5V READS) >0.5V alarm.
5. If any fault occurs, an alarm will come on (LED flashing in red), Microprocessor
will shut down (cut off) the laser automatically, and digital panel will display the
fault.

8.4 Selecting AGC Mode
For most applications, the desired mode is AGC ON. Variations in RF input level due to drift
and thermal changes in the equipment feeding the signal to F-RF-TX are compensated and
the signal from the other end of the link remains consistent.
To select the AGC ON mode, please refer to p 8.3.1.
When the input signal is at or near the nominal 15 dBmV levels, the AGC circuitry will
internally adjust to control the 1310nm Optical Transmitter modulation. If F-RF-TX sends
SNMP alarms: RF LEVEL LOW or it the LED bar shows RF level low, then you must either
adjust RF input level at the signal source or use MGC mode.

8.5 Selecting MGC Mode
To select the MGC ON mode (to turn off AGC mode), please refer to p 8.3.1.
Select the MGC mode if:
Your application has a desired variation of the input level to be passed onto the receive

end of your link.
Your application has an input that is too high level or too low level to allow AGC to
control it.
If you have less than 6 channels in your input RF signal. The AGC circuitry may read the
levels of the RF signals in error and overdrive the 1310nm Optical Transmitter circuitry
causing clipping distortions that create catastrophic signal impairments. When you
have less than 6 channels (90 MHz of occupied bandwidth) in the lower part of the
54-860 MHz range, please select MGC mode.

8.6 Adjusting Input Level for Reduced Number of RF Channels
Laser transmitters are sensitive to both input (peak) level and the total power input.
Designs are targeted at typical loading of about 60 channels. There is sufficient
headroom is the design to allow for significant variations in channel count (occupied
bandwidth) so as many as 130 channel input are not a problem and do not force a
reduction of the input level target from a nominal 15 dBmV level. (Reducing the level may
result in undesirable degradation of C/N.)
If you have significantly less than 60 channels occupied, i.e., below 20 channels or 120
MHz of occupied bandwidth, you may wish to increase the input RF level if your source
can supply the higher level to optimizing C/N and other performance factors.
Place the unit in MGC mode.
NOTE: You may receive SNMP alarm RF Level Low or RF LED bar shows RF Level low
when there is a small number of channels (small occupied bandwidth) input to CL-870-T,
even though the RF signal is at the desired level. The RF circuitry senses a wide bandwidth
and averages the signal level; when only a small portion of the bandwidth is occupied at
proper levels and the rest of that is unoccupied, the sensor circuitry reports a low level.
Adjust the source to supply the level noted in the table below.

Desired Input Level = Level of input signal at which AGC will work OK
Specified Input Level = Signal level for 59PAL channels at which AGC works OK. In our case
it is 15 dBmV
Actual Channel Count = Number of channels being input to the transmitter
Specified Channels = total number of channels. In our scenario it is 59
Formula: Desired Input Level = Specified Input Level - A, where A = 10 x Log (Actual
Channel Count/Specified Channels)
