Safe Arrival Program reminder
Our Safe Arrival Program is vital to the safety of all of our stu- dents. Please remember to call the Safe Arrival Line if your child will be late or absent from school. To report an absence or late arrival, call the school 705-436-3600 and press 1 to leave a message. Include the students name, spell the students last name, teacher, reason for absence and expected date of return in your message. This service is available 24 hours a day for your convenience. If your child is absent and no message has been left with Safe Arrival, parents, guardians and emergency con- tacts will be called until we reach someone who can verify your childs absence. On bus cancellation days, it is assumed that students who dont attend because of the bus cancellations have stayed home be- cause of the weather. This includes students who walk to school. For both bus students and walking students, the absence will be marked as 'G' (General Absence day), and it won't affect attend- ance records. Please use this necessary tool to ensure the safety of our stu- dents. The Eye SeeEye Learn program provides compre- hensive eye exams by local optometrists to Junior Kindergarten students. The eye exams are covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) when parents show their childs health card. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the eye exam and if the child requires a pair of glasses, they will receive them free of charge courtesy of the participating Eye SeeEye Learn sponsors (APPENDIX A).
The Eye SeeEye Learn program was developed to raise awareness among parents about the importance of having their children's eyes checked upon starting school. The Ontario Association of Optometrists rec- ognizes the important link between eye health and learning, and recommends comprehensive eye exam- inations for all children entering Kindergarten. Students entering Junior Kindergarten in 2014-2015 are eligible to participate between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015.
Action Program staff are preparing packages for students registered for Kindergarten at all Simcoe County Dis- trict School Board schools and APPENDIX A will be included for parents in all packages. Immunizations required for school attendance As of July 1, 2014, the Immunization School Pupils Act (ISPA) has added three new vaccines that students require for entry to school: meningococcal disease; pertussis (whooping cough) and varicella (chickenpox). These three vaccines are addition to existing requirements for proof of immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps and rubella. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is required under the ISPA to collect and maintain up-to-date records of all the above immunizations for every child registered in school within Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. Now is a good time to contact your health care provider to discuss your childs immuniza- tion needs in light of the new legislation. Parents are re- quired to contact the health unit to update immunization records for their children or provide a valid affidavit. Visit the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit website for fur- ther information: http://www.simcoemuskokahealth.org/ (click on Topics, then Immunization). Bus delay notification: Subscription service from trans- portation consortium Did you know that you can subscribe to updates from the Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium about your child's bus and any delays? Parents/students can sign up for email notification of delays by students bus route number (no personal information required). The email sub- scription service is available at http:// www.simcoecountyschoolbus.ca/ - click on View bus de- lays, and then click on the subscription sign in the right corner. Supervision Prior to School
Supervision on our playground does not begin prior to 9:05 AM.
If your child(ren) are arriving at school earlier than 9:05 AM, they will not be supervised. . Please ensure that they do not leave home so early that they will arrive before 9:05 AM.
As well, there is no after school supervision. Students must leave the school property once the 3:40 PM bell rings.
Attendance matters
Being present and on-time at school is an important skill to teach your child. Patterns of attendance are established during the early years of schooling and there is a direct relationship between attendance and achievement. Being late for school also affects student learning. If a child is just 10 minutes late for class every day, they will miss over 30 hours of instruction over the course of the school year. Poor attendance makes it difficult for students to form positive peer relationships and students that have learning difficulties are put at even greater risk when they miss school frequently. Here are some tips to help with attendance and punctuality: Talk with your child about why it is important to attend school regularly - give specific examples of how education can help them in their life. Make sure that your child stays healthy by eating properly, exercising and getting enough sleep. Lead by example; if children see their parents missing work frequently, they may expect to be able to do the same thing. If your child is having a specific issue at school that is causing them to not want to attend, speak to school staff as soon as pos- sible so we can work with you to solve the problem. New website provides math help for parents and students The Ministry of Education has launched Mathies (www.mathies.ca), a new website designed to help parents support their children in math. The site includes activities, learning tools and games for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12. Front doors will be locked during school day starting September 2, 2014 Last summer, front door intercom and video technology was in- stalled at our school. The same technology was installed at all el- ementary schools in our school board. The technology was funded by the Ontario Government as part of a program called Safe Welcome. The intention is for all ele- mentary schools in Ontario to have front entrance doors locked during the school day. We plan to start using the system September 2, 2014. Our doors will be locked during class time only. To access the building dur- ing this time, you will need to ring the buzzer. Staff will be responsible for checking the monitor and buzzing visitors in. Its one more way we can monitor who is visiting our school. It will help us ensure all visitors sign in at the office. Our primary teachers will be showing their classes the new tech- nologywe are calling it a doorbell. I will also make an an- nouncement for all students so they know they will need to use the doorbell if they arrive late for school, or return to school after an appointment. I wanted to make sure you were aware of this security enhance- ment at our school. As always, if you have any questions, please call or visit the office.

Solving Homework Problems
Children need good study habits and routines in order to be successful at homework. However, for some children home- work can be a time of stress. Sometimes children have problems with homework because of poor planning, because they dont understand the work or because they would rather be doing something else. Parents can help children develop good homework routines with preparation, encouragement and by showing an interest in the work that they are doing.
To find out more, call Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Fri- day and ask about Triple P Positive Parenting Program solutions for homework problems or visit the new Triple P Ontario website at www.triplepontario.ca.
Meal Time
Learning to sit at a table with others and using utensils is a difficult task for preschoolers and young children. Parents need to have realistic expectations about what their child can do, as well as what and how much they can eat. Problems can often be prevented by establishing a mealtime routine, preparing your child ahead of time, explaining the rules, talking about rewards and consequences for certain behaviours, and having everything ready before seating your child at the ta- ble. Mealtimes are a great place for families to get together, catch up on their day and enjoy one anothers company. To encourage the behaviour you like, try to stay calm and praise your child when he or she is eating well and following the rules. As your child develops good eating habits you wont have to remind them as much about what is expected at mealtimes.
For more information you can call Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-5720 and speak with a public health nurse about Triple P- Positive Parenting Program or visit the new Triple P Ontario website at www.triplepontario.ca.
Shopping with Children
Is your child misbehaving whenever you go shopping? Disruptive behaviourwhining, getting lost, throwing tantrumscan happen when children are tired and are expected to be patient for too long. As a parent, part of your role is to teach your child how to behave responsibly when you are out shopping. Learn to make shopping with your child a more enjoyable ac- tivity by calling Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Ask about the Triple P tip sheet on shopping with children or visit the new Triple P Ontario Website at www.triplepontario.ca for more parenting information.
Chores and Your Children Responsibility for regular chores helps children learn self-discipline, how to apply themselves to a job and how to help with the running of the household. Having them help out around the house also frees up a little more time for the family for other activities. Ask what chores your child would like to do, draw up a job roster and talk about consequences and rewards for chores done satisfactorily.
To find out more about encouraging your child to do chores call Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721- 7520 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and ask about the Triple P-Positive Parenting Program tip sheet on chores, or visit the new Triple P Ontario website at www.triplepontario.ca for more parenting information.
Serving up Mealtime Magic for Your Family
When was the last time your family sat down together to eat a meal?
Given the fast pace of life, it can be very challenging to find time for family meals.
Family meals allow you to connect with each other and catch up on the day. Eating together allows parents to be good role models for healthy eating. Children in turn learn to eat and enjoy nutritious foods.
Make time for family meals. Aim for at least three family meals per week. If you cant get everyone together for dinner, plan a family meal at breakfast or lunch. Keep the focus of meals on each other by making the dinner table a technology-free zone.
Plan ahead. Decide what meals you will have on certain nights. Prepare food for two meals so that on busy days, you can reheat the leftovers.
Be creative. Use Canadas Food Guide (www.healthcanada.gc.ca/foodguide) to choose nutritious items from the four food groups. Eat the same healthy foods you are asking your children to eat, and practise the mealtime manners you want them to master.
No one says sitting down together for a family meal is easy; however, it is well worth the effort.

Quality Time
Our days are so full, how do you find quality time with your child so they feel safe, secure, and loved? Quality time doesnt have to be a long time! Spend frequent, small amounts of time with your child doing things you both enjoy. This can be a chat in the car, or a quick game of chase in the park It is taking advantage of times together to be affectionate, show interest in your child, and teach new skills along the way. Your child will be more likely to show the same caring qualities to others.
Some Ideas! When your child wants to show you something, stop what you are doing and pay attention. Your child will feel accepted and appreciated. Give your child physical attention hugs, cuddles, high fives, and being close to you. Praise your child when he does something you would like to see more of. Descriptive praise helps children learn and they are more likely to do it again. Teach new skills by showing the skill, then giving your child an opportunity to practice. A parent can assist a child to brush her teeth. Prompt the child, We brush our teeth two times a day. Follow with descriptive praise, Great tooth-brushing, well done! Look after yourself. Find time to do something you enjoy and unwind. It is difficult to be a calm, relaxed parent if you are stressed, anxious or depressed. For more information you can call Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 and speak with a public health nurse or click on the health unit website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org or go to www.triplepontario.ca.
Water safety tips to help keep kids safe
Did you know 570 children drowned in Canada in the last 10 years? This equals the number of children in 10 full school buses (Parachute Canada, 2014). Some tips to keep children safe around water this summer: Supervision is key - 90% of shallow water drowning among children occurred when an adult was absent. Stay within sight and arms reach when a child is in or near water including: pools, bathtubs, lakes, rivers and streams. Put down your electronic devices; listening isnt enough to prevent drowning. Most drowning is silent and occurs in just a few seconds. Swimming lessons allow children to gain confidence around water. Remember, lessons dont provide kids with special protection; supervision is always needed. Young children and weak swimmers should wear life jackets in or around the water. You and your child should always wear life jackets when riding in a boat. Fence your pool; 7 out of 10 cases of child drowning can be prevented with four-sided pool fencing. Tips for safe sun exposure
Sun protection is important for children and youth. It only takes one bad sunburn in childhood to increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. Here are some sun safety tips: Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes be- fore going out in the sun. Always follow label instructions. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of skin including the nose, ears, back of neck, tops of feet etc. Reapply every 2 to 3 hours and after perspiring or swimming. Use sunscreen even on cloudy, hazy or foggy days; even in the winter. Wear loose, long sleeved shirts and pants, a large brimmed hat and sunglasses. Remember: harmful sun rays are most intense between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. When outdoors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. ensure shade (either natural or artificial) is availa- ble for children. Indoor tanning is no safer than tanning in the sun. Playground safety tips
The playground is a fun place for students. But, accidents can happen. To increase safety, teach children how to use playground equipment and play safely. You can increase safety by: removing cords and drawstrings on hoods, hats and jackets tucking in all loose clothing teaching children to be aware of moving swings and at the bottom of slides teaching children not to tie ropes to slides and other playground equipment For more information, visit Safe Kids Canada at www.safekidscanada.ca.
