logo design
Description: I really loved this project, Illustrator is my fa-
vorite! I love the freedom that it gives in illustration and
free design. It was great to stretch myself to think of 3
different ways I could make this logo work, but I think it
went well.
Programs Used: Illustrator
Date: June 7, 2014
Course: Visual Media Comm 130 Section 05
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objectives: Create three completely different, original
logos to fit a company or personal image that will ap-
peal to the audience.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your
logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc..
No photos or live-tracing.)
Process: In Adobe Illustrator, I was able to do many dif-
ferent tools to try and be effective with my logos. First
off, I went online and found a ton of different fonts that
I liked and then saved them in a folder to readily have
them, then experimented with them a little bit. I used
the pen tool to trace the frog and other things, and I
used the direct selection tool frequently to resize my
fonts, images, etc. I loved this process of using Illustra-
tor, its fun and easy once the keyboard shortcuts are
learned and used.
web design
Description: A website made by HTML and CSS coding to
present a logo that I had designed a few weeks ago.
Programs Used: Text Wrangler (HTLML & CSS Documents),
Photoshop
Date: June 27, 2014
Course: Visual Media Comm 130 Section 05
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objectives: Design a web page using HTML to display the
logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML.
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Process: The process for creating this weeks project was
hard but a good one. I had never been introduced much to
the HTML or CSS world, but I found it to be enjoyable. First, I
learned how to use the basic HTML coding, then set up the
type for that, then I went in Text Wrangler to edit the for-
mat of the CSS to format the site. Then in the Text Wran-
gler, I went through to change the fonts, colors, and sizes
of almost everything. Many times, I had to save the file
and check the site in a web browser to make sure it looked
alright. It was a fun project using the Text Wrangler and
searching for styles to put into the format of the HTML/CSS,
and I am glad to have learned these new skills.
brochure
Description: Brochure with at least one fold.
Programs Used: Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign
Date: July 13, 2014
Course: Visual Media Comm 130 Section 05
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded
document.
Create an original company logo and use it in a
brochure.
Process: To start this out, it was easiest to put a
layout together to be able to start from some-
where. I looked for inspiration on the internet
looking for Argentina stuff and then brainstormed
what I would do. Then I chose images to shape
around and in InDesign, I put them in an appeal-
ing way so that the text could move throughout
it and then put the body copy in. I took the colors
from the flag on the front. In Photoshop, I cut the
space above the city skyline on the inside on
the right and then in InDesign I did a text wrap
around the city skyline. Then in Illustrator I creat-
ed the logo for Viaje Argentina and then insert-
ed it into the InDesign document.
montage
Description: Blending pictures together with a quote or phrase
to make a montage.
Programs Used: Photoshop
Date: June 1, 2014
Course: Visual Media Comm 130 Section 05
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objectives: Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal
point and flow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant mes-
sage
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using
masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with
multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles
Process: Photoshop was used, and inside of that were many
tools. The masking tool, the paintbrush, editing the coloriza-
tion of the photos, etc. On the background image of the sky,
I inserted 3 pictures on top of my grandfather, father, and I,
then put a mask on it and blended all of them into the back-
ground. Also, I made it look like they blend into the sky as my
grandfather has passed away and so its as if he were in the
heavens. I added the font and tried to do some cool things
with it but decided that plain would be the best. I took the
eyedropper tool and made it the same color as the lighter
blue in the image.
photo design
Description: To design a quote with a photograph that we de-
signed and edited.
Programs Used: Photoshop
Date: May 25, 2014
Course: Visual Media Comm 130 Section 05
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objectives: Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors,
then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on
separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in
Photoshop.
Process: From the picture that I took, I made the whole things
light and faded the colors a little bit so that I could have a
bright point, which ended up becoming the bright pink flower.
I lassoed around the flower head and copied it and pasted it
on top so that the flower head didnt have the same effects
as the background photo. Then I brightened it up in Photoshop
and made the head look brighter than the rest, and it all was
inspiring with the quote by Spencer W. Kimball. Then with the
eyedropper tool, I drew the color of the dimmer rose color and
made a box to put the quote inside of it. I loved this project, it
was very rewarding!
stationery
Description: Creating a logo and then making statio-
nery that matches the brand.
Programs Used: Illustrator and InDesign
Date: June 15, 2014
Course: Visual Media Comm 130 Section 05
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objectives: Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a
business card and letterhead.
Process: In this project there was lots of tools used.
First I created the logo and that was a long process in
and of itself. The idea was to try and make it look like
railing. I went to search on the internet for inspiration
and pictures of railing so I could have something to
better draw off of. I chose the font and saw if it was
similar enough to what railing could look like. Then, I
took it to the letterhead and created a bunch of mini
rails that would stretch across both the top and the
bottom. Then, I decided to do a watermark centered at
the bottom and took it to about a 10% or somewhere
around there. Then I took the text of the body copy
information and aligned it to the edges of the water-
mark and the rails at the bottom. Then I enlarged the
QR and copied it to the business cards to make a
watermark.

Conference, in black and white.
Programs Used: InDesign
Date: May 10, 2014
Course: Visual Media Comm 130 Section 05
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appro-
priate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier
layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign
document to keep links in InDesign intact.
Process: I first started playing around with a layout on
InDesign, then decided to do some sketches of some
more ideas. Then I liked the idea of having a big grad-
uate cap to get the point across that it was a grad-
uate event. I also started experimenting with some
white boxes after putting in the Title in the black box.
It turned into a gradually smaller text and then the 3
white boxes at the end, creating movement through-
out the image. After the project, for this portfolio I add-
ed more white space to make it less busy and made

Description: For this project, only a scanner and Microsoft
Word were used to promote a fundraiser.
Programs Used: Microsoft Word
Date: May 16, 2014
Course: Visual Media Comm 130 Section 05
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Objectives: Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and
inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for
your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using
any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.
Process: Microsoft Word was the program in which I
created this poster, and also using a scanner to scan the
image from a manual. I scanned the picture and actual-
ly lightened it up through Word and saturated the color
a little bit more. I decided it would be cool to blow it up
and have it take up a majority of the page and show the
point, which was service. Then I did the same with the
text as I rotated it to align, which was hard with small
text. I chose a background texture so that it could add
to the composition, but something light so that it didnt
take away from the focus. I didnt know Word had so
many cool and useful functions. I am glad this project
taught me more about them!
