History of Zamboanga City

The development of the word Zamboanga gives fascinating and attractive


understanding of its historic background. It was named Jambangan meaning
Land of Flowers b! the earl! "ala! settlers. The "ala!s who settled near the
river banks are known as the #ubanons which means the $eople of the %iver.
& little later the 'ad(aos and the #amals came and also settled on where
the#ubanons are situated. )ith that these groups of people have confused the
words Jambangan with #amboangan. Then when the #panish coloni*ers came in
to the $hilippines the! had a hard time pronouncing #amboangan and so the!
have decided to change the name into Zamboanga for their convenience. The
province has an interesting histor!+ it was considered as the center of barter of
e,change among the earl! settlers such as the natives and non-natives. .n June
/0 1203 the name #amboangan was formall! changed into Zamboanga the
da! was also considered as the founding date of the cit!.
)hen the &mericans coloni*ed the $hilippines after the #panish
coloni*ation the &mericans began to have a full control over the province of
Zamboanga. &fter that there are special governments that were established in
"indanao and #ulu b! then Zamboanga became the capital of the province.
The abolition of the government of the "oro $rovince made a wa! for the
creation of new form of government which is called as the 4epartment of
"inadanao and #ulu the positions in this kind of the government was delegated
to the Filipino residents of Zamboanga. )hen the $hilippines have achieved its
5ommonwealth government in 1602 the province was declared as a 5harter
5it!. Improvement and advancement in Zamboanga has furthered with that it
lead the "inister Interior Jose %o7o to declare Zamboanga 5it! as a cit! which is
highl! urbani*ed 8Local 9overnment of Zamboanga 5it! :.4.;.
Education in Zamboanga
Zamboanga one of the highl!-urbani*ed cities in "indanao o<ers a high-
=ualit! education to its citi*ens through its e,cellent and outstanding >niversities
and 5olleges. Through this the schools have been attractive to students in the
province and outside it. It has not onl! o<er a good =ualit! education but it gives
students an opportunit! to stud! through its low tuition fees. The >niversities
and 5olleges in the cit! have been successful in providing intensive and
competitive research programs and curriculums that are known and accepted
world-wide as a result the cit! has been able to attract not onl! Filipino students
but also students from other countries countries. "oreover educational
institutions in Zamboanga o<er scholarship and challenging curricula with this
the cit! has been recogni*ed of its competitive educational s!stem 8Zamboanga

Strategic Issues
1. 4i?cult! in looking for e,cellent and e,pert professors @ the >niversit! will
have a hard time in hiring outstanding and Arst-rate professors since the! are
mostl! concentrated in urban areas. "oreover there are e,cellent practitioners
that will prefer to work in higher salaried >niversities.
/. B,treme competition for studentsC the learning s!stem will be critical and
rigorous which will help them develop their practical interpersonal and
communication skills.
D. Increasing infrastructure costs 8libraries research facilities; of high-
=ualit! scholarship and teaching will
continue making strategic choices necessar! to determine where to
invest limited resources and where to disinvest.
3. 4eclines in state funding for contract colleges and the land grant
mission. The real-dollar support for
contract colleges will continue to decline leading to among other
things the need to reassess how the universit!
fulAlls its public engagement mission.

These create obstacles for the crosscollege ties and collaborations that
are likel! to be necessar! to e<ectivel! and e?cientl! use available
resources
