Welcome
to the BTU in Cottbus
Whether you are coming to BTU Cottbus tem-
porarily within an exchange program, or have
been accepted as a full-time degree seeking
student, you have now overcome the many
hurdles of the admission procedures and can
expect new and exciting experiences ahead.
We would like to congratulate you on your
admission. Brandenburg University of Tech-
nology (BTU), founded in 1991, is a young,
innovative and international university. With
about 4,700 students BTU is a medium-sized
university with a relaxed atmosphere on cam-
pus. About 20 % of the students come from
abroad, representing 80 countries around the
world.
This booklet was designed by students for
students, under the guidance of the Interna-
tional Office. It contains lots of useful infor-
mation pertaining to your stay in Cottbus at
the BTU, starting with the up-coming enroll-
ment procedure. It is also supposed to give
you a first impression of the university and its
surroundings.
We trust it will be helpful as you prepare for
your studies in Cottbus. We look forward to
welcoming you here soon.

Unabhngig davon, ob Sie im Austausch fr
ein oder zwei Semester oder fr ein Vollzeit-
studium an die BTU kommen, liegen nun end-
lich die Hrden des Zulassungsverfahrens hin-
ter Ihnen und neue spannende und interes-
sante Herausforderungen vor Ihnen.
Wir mchten Ihnen zu Ihrer Zulassung gratu-
lieren. Die Brandenburgische Technische Uni-
versitt (BTU), 1991 gegrndet, ist eine jun-
ge, innovative und international ausgerichte-
te Hochschule. Mit ca. 4 700 Studierenden hat
sie einen berschaubaren Campus und eine
familire Atmosphre. Etwa 20 % der Studie-
renden an der BTU kommen aus dem Ausland.
Rund 80 Lnder sind hier vertreten.
Nach dem Motto Von Studierenden fr Stu-
dierende haben Studierende unter Leitung
des Akademischen Auslandsamtes in dieser
Broschre viele Hinweise fr den weiteren Ab-
lauf des Immatrikulationsverfahrens (im Kapi-
tel: Erste Schritte in Cottbus) sowie Infor-
mationen zur BTU und ihrer Umgebung zu-
sammengefasst.
Wir hoffen, dass sie Ihnen bei Ihren Reisevor-

Wo liegt eigentlich Cottbus?
Dies ist sicherlich eine der ersten Fragen, die
ihr euch vor eurer Ankunft in Deutschland ge-
stellt habt. Cottbus ist eine Stadt mit ca.
100 000 Einwohnern und liegt im Sdosten
des Bundeslandes Brandenburg, zwischen Ber-
lin (100 km) und Dresden (120 km). Dieses
Bundesland gehrt zu den fnf Bundesln-
dern, die erst 1990 der Bundesrepublik bei-
getreten sind und bis dahin die DDR gebildet
haben. Bis zur polnischen Grenze sind es nur
noch ca. 30 Kilometer.
Where is Cottbus?
This is one of the most frequently asked ques-
tions by international students. Cottbus is a
city of about 100,000 residents and is situat-
ed in the South East of the federal State of
Brandenburg between Berlin (100 km) and
Dresden (120 km). It is one of the five feder-
al states which formed the GDR until 1990
and then joined the Federal Republic of Ger-
many. Cottbus is situated only 30 kilometers
from the Polish border.

With a population of 100,000 inhabitants
Cottbus is, after the capital Potsdam, the sec-
ond largest city in the state of Brandenburg.
It is a favorite starting point for trips into the
beautiful area known as Niederlausitz. This is
where the Sorbian people, a minority Slavon-
ic group, live among the small waterways and
canals only a few kilometers north of the city.
If you are familiar with the Polish language
you will find similarities with the Sorbian lan-
guage as well. You will see street signs and in-
formation written in both German and Sor-
bian in Cottbus. Sorbian people and their tra-
ditions are widespread throughout the city
and environs and enrich the city life with their
customs and festivities. The remains of the

Mit ihren 100 000 Einwohnern ist Cottbus,
nach der Landeshauptstadt Potsdam, die
zweitgrte Stadt Brandenburgs.
Sie ist ein gnstiger Ausgangspunkt fr Aus-
flge in die landschaftlich schne Region der
Niederlausitz. Diese wird durch den Spreewald
mit seinen kleinen Kanlen und Wasserlufen
einige Kilometer nrdlich der Stadt und durch
ein kleines slawisches Volk, den Sorben bzw.
Wenden, mit einer eigenen, dem polnischen
hnlichen sorbisch genannten Sprache, ge-
prgt. So findet man heute viele Straenna-
men und Informationstafeln zweisprachig in
Sorbisch und Deutsch in Cottbus und Umge-
bung. Auerdem bereichern die Sorben bzw.
Wenden mit ihren Festen und Gebruchen das
Leben der Stadt.

Neben mittelalterlichen Resten der Stadtmauer
sowie einzelnen barocken Fassaden am Alt-
markt wird das Gesicht der Innenstadt vor al-
lem durch die aus der Grnderzeit stammen-
den Gebude geprgt. Nachdem die Stadt im
15. Jahrhundert durch die Herstellung von
Stoffen schon an Bedeutung gewonnen hat-
te, begann sie Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts
(Grnderzeit) auerdem mit dem Abbau von
Braunkohle stark zu wachsen.
Nach 1945 wurde Cottbus dann Bezirksstadt.
Heute ist Cottbus eine Grostadt, die sich als
Zentrum wissenschaftlicher, sportlicher und
kultureller Aktivitten einen Namen gemacht
hat. Einen ausfhrlicheren berblick ber die
Geschichte der Stadt, sowie der Umgebung
bietet das mehr als 100 Jahre alte Cottbuser
Stadtmuseum in der Bahnhofstrae.
Zu den architektonischen Sehenswrdigkeiten
gehren weiterhin die Kirchen innerhalb der
alten Stadtgrenzen, wie die Oberkirche St. Ni-
kolai, die Schlokirche und die Klosterkirche.
Reste der mittelalterlichen Stadtmauer mit
Trmen und Toren sowie ein breiter Grn-
streifen an Stelle der ehemaligen Stadtmauer
umschlieen den alten Stadtkern und machen
den bergang zu dem moderneren Teil der
Stadt noch heute deutlich.
Cottbus verfgt ber weitlufige Parks, wie
zum Beispiel den Spreeauenpark und den
Tierpark sowie viele Alleen und Promenaden.
Entlang der Spree wird es durch ein grnes

The city earned its place in history in the 15th
century as a cloth weaving center and later at
the end of the 19th century as a coal mining
boom town.
After 1945, Cottbus became the principal city
in this area. Today Cottbus has made a name
for itself as a center of scientific, sports and
cultural activities. The more than 100-year-
old Cottbus City Museum (Stadtmuseum) on
Bahnhofstrae offers a more detailed descrip-
tion about the history of the city.
An architectural sight worth seeing is the old
city wall bordered by the Oberkirche St. Niko-
lai , the Schlosskirche and the Klosterkirche.
These three churches, in addition to the city
walls with their gates and towers, all date from
the medieval period. These are all blended in-
to the modern city of Cottbus.
Cottbus is a green city. It has many parks, such
as the Spreeauenpark and the Zoological Gar-
den, as well as tree-lined avenues and prom-

Mit der Bahn...
Die Bundesrepublik verfgt ber ein relativ
gut ausgebautes Eisenbahnnetz. Cottbus
selbst besitzt direkte Verbindungen nach Ber-
lin, Dresden, Leipzig und Wroclaw (Polen).
Man kann also relativ leicht von jedem Punkt
in Europa nach Cottbus gelangen.

By train
Germany has a well developed railway net-
work. Thus Cottbus has direct links to Berlin,
Leipzig, Dresden and Wroclaw (Poland). In
fact, you can reach Cottbus from nearly every
place in Europe.

Mit dem Flugzeug...
Cottbus verfgt ber keinen eigenen Ver-
kehrsflughafen. Falls ihr mit dem Flugzeug
anreist, msst ihr mit der Bahn weiter nach
Cottbus fahren. Es ist uns leider nicht mg-
lich, euch von einem Flughafen abzuholen.
Der deutsche Flughafen mit den meisten
internationalen Verbindungen ist Frank-
furt/Main (FRA). Die nchsten internationalen
Flughfen sind die Berliner Flughfen Tegel
(TXL), Tempelhof (THF) und Schnefeld (SXF).
Wenn ihr in Berlin landet, gelangt ihr:

Vom Flughafen Tegel mit den Bussen 109,
X9 zum Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten oder
mit dem Bus TXL zum Hauptbahnhof.
Vom Flughafen Tempelhof mit der U-Bahn
U6 zum Bahnhof Friedrichstrae.
Vom Flughafen Schnefeld mit der Schnell-
Bahn S9 zum Bahnhof Berlin-Ostbahnhof.
Von all diesen Bahnhfen fahren die Zge der
Linie RE 2 nach Cottbus. Abfahrten einmal
stndlich zwischen 6 und 22 Uhr. Die Fahrzeit
betrgt ca. 1 Stunde und vierzig Minuten.
By plane
Cottbus does not have a public airport. If you
are travelling by plane, you will have to trans-
fer to the railway network. Unfortunately we
are unable to pick you up from an airport.
The main airport in Germany is Frank-
furt/Main (FRA). The closest international air-
ports to Cottbus are the ones in Berlin: Tegel
(TXL), Tempelhof (THF) and Schnefeld (SXF).
Arrivals in Berlin:
From Berlin Tegel take bus number X9 or
109 to the train station Zoologischer
Garten; take bus TXL to the main train sta-
tion Hauptbahnhof
From Berlin Tempelhof take underground
U6 to the train station Friedrichstrasse.
From Berlin Schnefeld take the S-Bahn train
S9 to the train station Berlin-Ostbahnhof.
From these stations the train RE2 goes to
Cottbus. It departs hourly between 6 a.m. and
10 p.m. with an approximate travel time of 1
hour 40 min. to Cottbus.

Wenn ihr in Frankfurt/Main landet:

Vom Flughafen fhrt eine S-Bahn zwischen
6 Uhr und 0 Uhr alle 10 Minuten direkt zum
Frankfurter Hauptbahnhof. Von dort gibt es
alle 2 Stunden zwischen 5 und 17 Uhr eine
Zugverbindung nach Leipzig mit Anschluss-
zug nach Cottbus. Die Zugfahrt dauert ca. 6
Stunden.
Vom Bahnhof aus erreicht ihr die Universitt
mit dem Bus Nr. 16. (Straenbahnhaltestelle
vor dem Hauptbahnhof, bis zur Haltestelle
TU-Mensa). Zu Fu bentigt ihr ungefhr
25-30 Minuten. Der Weg ist ausgeschildert.
Arrivals at Frankfurt/Main Airport:

Direct S-Bahn trains run between Frankfurt/
Main Airport and Frankfurt/Main train station
every 10 minutes between 6 a.m. and mid-
night. At the Frankfurt/Main train station,
there is a connection to Leipzig every 2 hours
between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. In Leipzig you
must change to the train for Cottbus. Travel
time from Frankfurt/Main to Cottbus via
Leipzig is approximately 6 hours.
From the Cottbus train station you can get
to the university by bus, by taxi or on foot.
Take bus No. 16 from the tram platform in
front of the station to the stop: TU Mensa
or you can just take a taxi from the train sta-
tion. If you like to walk you will need ap-
proximately 2030 minutes, there are signs for
the university along the way.

Lage und Entwicklung
Die BTU liegt am nordwestlichen Rand der
Cottbuser Innenstadt. Bis zum historischen
Kern geht man zu Fu etwa 5 Minuten.
Die BTU ist eine junge Universitt, die 1991
als einzige technische Universitt des Landes
Brandenburg gegrndet wurde. Interdiszipli-
nre Forschung und fakulttsbergreifende
Zusammenarbeit auch in der Lehre kenn-
zeichnen das Profil der Hochschule. Das f-
cherbergreifende Studium vermittelt den
Studierenden der Natur- und Ingenieurwis-
senschaften auch Geistes- und sozialwissen-
schaftliche Kenntnisse ber die Bezge von
Technik und Gesellschaft.

Location and Development
BTU is situated at the Northwest periphery
of downtown Cottbus. From the campus it
takes about 5 minutes to walk to the historic
center.
BTU was founded in 1991 as the only Univer-
sity of Technology in the state of Branden-
burg. Interdisciplinary research and teaching is
a distinguishing feature of the university. This
interdisciplinary approach guarantees a versa-
tile education and gives the student of engi-
neering and natural sciences additional valu-
able background knowledge in human and so-
cial sciences and how technology and the hu-
manities interact and relate to each other.

The campus
The excellent student/teacher ratio assures
students access to their instructors and facil-
itates completion of the programs in the pre-
scribed period of time. From the very begin-
ning of their studies, students are exposed to
scientific work, which gives them valuable
knowledge and skills in preparation for their
chosen careers. The universitys physical facil-
ities, including laboratories, computer center
and educational support departments, all have
the latest equipment and technology. In ad-
dition, the university offers each student of
architecture and for urban planning the free
use of his or her own studio space.
With its technical competence, sophisticated
research facilities and technology transfer sites
the university acts as a hub of technological
innovation for the region. The Technology
Transfer Center of BTU is an interface for sci-

ence and industry in the area. Furthermore,
owing to its proximity to Poland (30km) and
the Czech Republic (120km), BTU is located
at the frontier of the expanding European
Union, offering students unique opportuni-
ties in the international job market.
Cottbus the green gem on the River Spree
is a friendly and relaxed place to study. The uni-
versity is known as a closely-linked university,
meaning that distances between lecture halls,
seminar rooms, student dormitories, cafeterias,
sport facilities and the city center are very short.
While the present day university was founded
in 1991, the campus itself housed different in-
stitutions of higher education from 1948 on.
As you walk around the campus you can easi-
ly recognise from its buildings the different
stages of development. There are stone build-
ings from the 1950s, pre-cast-concrete struc-
tures from the 1970s and new and freshly ren-
ovated buildings from recent times. The exten-
sion and development of the campus is still in
progress, new and modernized buildings, lab-
oratories and lecture halls are added each year.

Here we would like to introduce some impor-
tant buildings and institutions of BTU Cottbus.

Cottbus die grne Stadt an der Spree gilt als
ein Studienort der persnlichen Kontakte. Als
Besonderheit unter den deutschen Hochschu-
len prsentiert sich die BTU als eine Campus-
universitt der kurzen Wege zwischen Hrslen,
Seminarrumen, Wohnheimen, Mensa, Sport-
einrichtungen, Studentenclubs und der City.
Obwohl die Universitt erst 1991 gegrndet
wurde, waren bereits seit 1948 auf dem heu-
tigen Campus verschiedene Bildungseinrich-
tungen untergebracht. Beim Rundgang ber
dem Campus kann man die verschiedenen
Bauphasen gut ablesen: Die Steinhuser mit
Walmdach der ersten Bauphase, die Platten-
bauten aus den 1970ern sowie die Neubau-
ten und Erweiterungen aus der Zeit nach der
Universittsgrndung im Jahre 1991.
Der Ausbau ist noch nicht abgeschlossen. Die
BTU wird weiterhin ausgebaut, umgebaut und
modernisiert.

IKMZ
To the East of the Karl-Marx-Strae, opposite
the main building, you will find the new li-
brary designed in a very innovative style by
Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron. It is
called the Information, Communication and
Multimedia Center (IKMZ) and replaces the
old library in the main building.
The University Library has over 470,000 books
and 1,800 different scientific, regional and in-
ternational magazines and periodicals. Micro-
fiche, video, maps, diskettes, CD ROMs in ad-
dition to standard printed text are available.
With your student identity card you can bor-
row an unlimited number of books.
You have the possibility to join a guided tour
through the IKMZ (also in English).

The IKMZ has about 600 computer work sta-
tions with internet connections. In order to log
in you need to register for a so-called Laco-
ma-Account. All computers have a USB-Port
and CD-Rom. You have the opportunity to
print or to scan. You can also use your own
laptop which you can plug in on each work-
ing station. If you bring your own data cable
you can also access the internet from your lap-
top. Another possiblitiy to access the internet
is through wireless LAN. To access to wireless
LAN from your laptop you need to register for
a Lacoma-account as well (wireless LAN
www.rz.tu-cottbus.de/urz/support.html).

PC-Pool and Computer Center
The Computer Center has a variety of com-
puters and PC pools available with internet
connections.
Students who work in the studios in LG 2A-
2D have the opportunity to use private com-
puters within the university network.
Im gesamten IKMZ gibt es 600 Computerar-
beitspltze. Diese haben eine Internetanbin-
dung mit der man sich ins Campusnetz ein-
loggen kann. Dazu ist ein Lacoma-Account
notwendig. An den Computern sind USB-
Ports und CD-Rom Laufwerke vorhanden. Es
besteht die Mglichkeit zum Scannen und
Drucken. In den Leseslen knnen eigene Lap-
tops benutzt werden. An jedem Arbeitsplatz
ist eine Stromversorgung vorhanden, sowie ein
Internetzzugang mittels selbstmitgebrachten
Datenkabel. Weiterhin besteht die Mglich-
keit ber W-LAN ins Internet zu gelangen. Fr
die Freischaltung des W-LAN Zugang mit dem
eigenen Laptop ist ebenfalls ein Lacoma-Ac-

Dining Hall and Cafeteria
You can get all the meals you need in the din-
ing hall or so-called Mensa building. On the
lower level you will find the cafeteria which
offers an inexpensive variety of breakfast,
lunch, snack bar items, salad bar, and hot or
cold drinks; On the upper level there is the hall
which offers a choice of five hot dishes daily,
including a vegetarian dish. Prices range from
1,50 2,50. In the Mensa building you
will find as well the Brasserie which is open
for meals and wine or beer in the evenings.

GUTE TAT (Good Deed)
With this project the STURA wants to support
international students especially during their
first weeks in Germany and at the BTU Cottbus.
German students, who have volunteered to
help, will if possible meet you at the station,
assist you in administrative matters and show
you around Cottbus so that you can famil-
iarize yourself with both the university and
the city.
If you need help in this way contact the Stu-
dent Council.
TANDEM
The TANDEM-project was initiated to enable
students to improve or teach each other their
native languages. Most importantly, this proj-
ect forms a basis to get to know more about
the culture behind the languages.
GUTE TAT
Mit diesem Projekt will der StuRa den inter-
nationalen Studenten besonders in den ersten
Wochen in Deutschland und an der BTU Cott-
bus helfen, sich zurechtzufinden.
Deutsche Studenten, die sich dazu bereit
erklrt haben zu helfen, knnen euch mgli-

TANDEM
Das TANDEM-Projekt dient dazu, dass Stu-

die Kultur dahinter ein wenig nher kennen-

Nachricht per e-mail mit dem Kontakt zu eu-
rem TANDEM-Partner. Danach ist es an euch,
ein Treffen zu organisieren.
Am besten ihr verabredet euch zu einer Tasse
Kaffee oder einem Glas Bier in netter Atmo-
sphre, denn dann geht das Kennenlernen
und Sprache lernen leichter.

Erste Schritte in Cottbus
Immatrikulation und Behrdengnge
Fr die Immatrikulation an der BTU und fr
die behrdliche Anmeldung in Deutschland,
msst ihr verschiedene Unterlagen vorweisen.
Im Folgenden haben wir die wichtigsten In-
formationen als Erste Schritte fr euch zu-

1. Schritt: Zimmersuche
Das Wichtigste in Deutschland ist eine Woh-
nung! Ohne eine stndige Adresse in Deutsch-
land kannst du keinen der nachfolgenden

Studentenwohnheim
1. Viele Studenten nutzen die Mglichkeit im
Studentenwohnheim zu wohnen. In Cott-
bus knnt ihr im Vergleich zu anderen
Stdten relativ leicht einen Wohnheimplatz
bekommen.
2. Die Anzahl der Zimmer ist natrlich den-
noch begrenzt.
3. Bewerbt euch deshalb bitte gleich nach Er-
halt eurer Zulassung noch von eurem Hei-

The most important thing is a place to live!
Without an address in Germany you cannot
go through with any of the steps.
Student Dormitories
1. Many students decide to live in a dormito-
ry. Compared to other German cities it is
relatively easy to get a place in a student
dormitory in Cottbus.
2. Nevertheless, the number of rooms is limited.
3. Therefore, you should apply at the Studen-
tenwerk soon after receiving your admission
documents and before leaving for Germany.

zelzimmer fr 140 - 306 pro Monat an.
In der beiliegenden Broschre knnt ihr euch
einen geeigneten Wohnheimplatz aussuchen.
Es ist jedoch mglich, dass ihr nicht genau das
Studentenwohnheim bekommt, welches ihr
euch ausgesucht habt, z.B. wenn schon alle
Zimmer ausgebucht sind. Das Studentenwerk
bemht sich immer, einen passenden Ersatz
zu finden. Wenn ihr einen Wohnheimplatz be-
antragt habt, bekommt ihr zu Beginn des Win-
tersemesters einen speziellen Termin fr die
Unterzeichnung des Mietvertrages.

The Studentenwerk offers mostly single
rooms with prices ranging from 140 -
306 per month. In the enclosed brochure
you can choose suitable accommodation for
yourself. It might, however, be possible that
you will not get the room of your choice, if
for example all rooms in your chosen dormi-
tory are booked already. However, the Stu-
dentenwerk always tries to find comparable
rooms in this case.
Once you have applied to the Studentenwerk,
they will send you a letter with a room offer
and a date informing you when you should
sign your rental contract at the beginning of
the winter semester. When signing the con-
tract you should be prepared to pay the first
months rent and an additional 200 as a se-
curity deposit.

In the event that you did not get a place in
the student dormitories or if you would rather
live off campus, there are different possibili-
ties for finding a private room or apartment.
It is hard to organize an accommodation off
campus from your home country. Therefore
you should do that upon arrival.
Shared flats
There is a large off-campus, student popula-
tion in Cottbus. Many of them live in a
Wohngemeinschaft (WG - shared flat) and
they are frequently looking for roommates.
There are many advertisements posted on
campus, e.g. in the cafeteria, in the Main
Building, in the student residence buildings
and in the library.

2. Schritt: Krankenkasse
Jeder, der in Deutschland studieren mchte,
bentigt den Nachweis einer Krankenversiche-
rung, um sich zu immatrikulieren. Studieren-
de aus EU-Lndern mssen lediglich die Eu-
ropean Health Insurance Card die sie bei ihrer
Krankenkasse im Heimatland erhalten, mit-
bringen. Alle anderen Studierenden mssen ei-
ne Krankenversicherung abschlieen. Studien-
anfnger die jnger als 30 Jahre sind, knnen
Mitglied einer gesetzlichen Krankenkasse wer-
den. Wer lter als 30 Jahre ist, muss sich bei
einer privaten Krankenversicherung anmelden.
Die Leistungen der verschiedenen gesetzlichen
Krankenkassen und die monatlichen Beitrge
sind fr Studierende bei allen Kassen gleich,
zur Zeit betragen sie 56,62 EUR.
Die Tarife der privaten Krankenversicherungen
variieren stark. Erkundigt euch im Akademi-
schen Auslandsamt nach den gnstigsten An-
geboten.
Step 2: Health Insurance
Everyone studying in Germany needs proof of
health insurance. Students from the European
Union have to bring along the European
Health Insurance Card, which they can acquire
from their home insurance company. All non-
EU students have to get German health in-
surance. Applicants younger than 30 years can
become members of public health insurance.
Students older than 30 have to join a private
insurance company.
The benefits of all public health insurance
companies are the same, as well as the rates
for students. At present it cost 56,62 per
month.
The rates for private health insurances vary,
please ask the International Office for rea-
sonable offers.

mester fee is 209 per semester for regular
Students and 158 for exchange students.
Included in this fee is the semester ticket. This
ticket is valid from WS 06/07 and includes the
public transport system in Cottbus, Berlin and
the entire state of Brandenburg as well as the
trainride to Dresden-Neustadt. Once you have
finished these steps you are enrolled and will
be given your student identity card.
Step 4: City Office and
Foreigners Registration Office
After completing enrollment at our university
you still have to register with the STADT-
BRO (City Office) and the AUSLNDER-
BEHRDE (Foreigners Registration Office)
to extend your visa and apply for an Aufen-
thaltserlaubnis (student residence permit).
1. The form for the extension of your visa is
available at the International Office. Please
make sure to fill it in completely.
2. At first, please register with the Stadtbro.
There, you will receive confirmation of res-
idency (Meldebescheinigung).
Please bring: passport, rental contract, Stu-
dienbescheinigung (proof of enrollment)
3. Then you can extend your visa and apply
for a student residence permit (Aufen-
thaltserlaubnis) at the Auslnderbehrde.
Please bring the following documents:

fr Studenten, da dieses Konto fr euch ko-
stenlos ist. Bringe zur Erffnung des Kontos
deine Studienbescheinigung, euren Pass und
die Meldebescheinigung des Einwohnermel-
deamtes mit.

Kneipen und Clubs
Obwohl sich die Clubszene in Cottbus nicht
mit Dresden oder Berlin vergleichen kann, wird
einem in Cottbus nicht langweilig.
Oft veranstalten die Studenten selbst Partys,

scene in Cottbus to the one in Berlin or Dres-
den, you will not get bored in Cottbus. Fre-

pecially unique is the Wendisches Museum
which represents the culture of the Sorbian
people, the traditional minority of the Nieder-

Cottbus ist Mitglied des Verkehrsverbundes
Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB). Dies bedeutet, dass
ihr in ganz Berlin und Brandenburg in allen
Bussen und Bahnen mit dem Semesterticket
fahren knnt. In Cottbus selbst existiert ein
gut ausgebautes ffentliches Nahverkehrsnetz
aus Straenbahnen, Stadtbussen und ber-
landbussen. Mit diesen Verkehrsmitteln knnt
ihr alle wichtigen und interessanten Ziele der
Stadt und des Umlandes erreichen.
Die Wege innerhalb der Stadt sind im Allgemei-
nen kurz, man kann fast alles bequem zu Fu
erreichen. Informationen ber Studentenerm-
igung, Linienfhrung und Fahrzeiten erhaltet
ihr im Stadtverkehrsbro am Busbahnhof oder
am Haltestellenzentrum Stadtpromenade.

Cottbus is part of the Berlin-Brandenburg
Public Transport System. Due to this, you can
use all busses and trains within Brandenburg
and Berlin with the Semesterticket. Cottbus
itself has an extensive network of city bus,
tram, and long-distance bus transportation.
You can easily reach any location using this
system.
Usually you can reach most destinations in the
city on foot. Information concerning, sched-
ules, and routes is available in the City Trans-
portation Service Office at the bus terminal or
at the office at the tram station Stadtprom-

Semester
Fees and Living Expenses
Studying abroad usually involves other costs
than in your home country. Here we would
like to give you an overview of the expenses
that you have to consider for your stay
abroad.
Like all other public universities in Germany
the BTU Cottbus does not charge any tuition
fees. At the moment only a registration fee of
209 including semester ticket for each se-
mester is charged. For accommodation and
living expenses you should allocate approxi-
mately 500 -700 per month.
The following is only a rough estimate of ex-
penses to be considered:

Ein Studium im Ausland hat meist andere Ko-
stenfaktoren als im Heimatland. Wir mchten
euch hiermit einen kleinen berblick darber
geben, was ihr an Kosten fr euren Auslands-
aufenthalt einplanen msst.
Wir freuen uns Euch mitteilen zu knnen, dass
es an der BTU keine Studiengebhren gibt.
Momentan ist nur ein Semesterbeitrag in H-
he von 209 inklusive Semesterticket zu leis-
ten. Fr Unterkunft und sonstige Lebens-
unterhaltungskosten werden ungefhr 500-
700 pro Monat bentigt.
Die folgende Aufschlsselung soll eine Orien-

rzte
Solltet du einmal krank werden keine Panik,
in Cottbus gibt es viele rzte. Mit deiner Kran-
kenversicherung kannst du kostenlos zu je-
dem Allgemeinmediziner deiner Wahl gehen
(zzgl. pro Quartal eine einmalige Praxisgebhr
von 10 EUR). Fr bestimmte Spezialisten
braucht ihr eine berweisung von Hausarzt.
Eure Krankenversicherung bernimmt auch
den grten Teil der Rezeptkosten fr Medi-
kamente. Am Campus gibt es ein rztehaus
mit rzten fr die verschiedensten Fachge-
biete. Weitere rzte findet ihr in der ganzen
Stadt.
In der Regel haben rzte jeden Vormittag von
Montag bis Freitag zwischen 8 und 12 Uhr
Sprechzeit. Nachmittags sind die ffnungs-
zeiten von Praxis zu Praxis verschieden.
Doctors
Should you get sick, dont worry there are
many doctors in Cottbus. With your health in-
surance you can go to any general practitioner
you choose. Generally, consultations with doc-
tors are free of charge, only once every 3 moth
you have to pay 10 EUR if you go to the doc-
tor. For certain specialists you need a referral
from the general practitioner. Your health in-
surance also pays for most of the prescription
costs for medication. Next to the campus, on
the Juri-Gagarin-Strae, there is a clinic with
doctors specialized in all areas. Of course,
there are more doctors to choose from in
town. The International Office has a list with
English-speaking doctors if needed.
Generally physicians see patients Mondays
through Fridays between 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Af-
ternoons, the office hours differ from doctor
to doctor.
