The 2013 Northeast Montana Relay for Life was held at the Northeast Montana Fairgrounds where it will be held again this
weekend. Notice the Flame of Hope in lower left corner and the track easily identifiable with the luminaries.

2014 Northeast Montana Relay for Life in final prepping stages

Break out the sand shovels,

the Northeast Montana Relay for
Life will meet Thursday, July 24th
at 5:30 p.m. at the Valley County
Fairgrounds to fill Luminary bags
with sand and candles.

Come young, come old, your help
is appreciated! This is why we Relay
for Life, these special bags remind
us: Why we REMEMBER, WHY we
CELEBRATE and WHY WE KEEP
FIGHTING THIS FIGHT!
The Northeast Montana Relay
will get underway on Friday, July
25th with registration from 5:30 to

7:00 p.m. at the Fair office on the

grounds of the Northeast Montana
Fairgrounds.
Ken Kautz will be lighting the
Flame of Hope at 7:00 before giving
the Keynote Address.
The Luminaria Ceremony will
be held at 10:00, and the public
is encouraged to participate in
lighting the luminaria, quite a sight
to behold.
Each luminaria is personalized
with a name, photo, message or
drawing in memory or honor of a
friend or loved one who has been

affected by cancer. Luminaria can

also be dedicated in support of a
Relay participant. Each luminaria
candle represents a person. They
are our mothers, fathers, sisters,
brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces,
nephews, friends, coworkers, and so
many others.
During this time, names and
photos of those who have lost their
lives to cancer will be scrolled on the
big screen.

Region 6 mule & white-tailed deer aerial survey released

Aerial
surveys
of
deer
populations across northeastern
Montana generally indicate a
continuing increase in some numbers
following several years of heavy
weather-and-disease-related losses,
state wildlife managers say.
For mule deer, 11 different trend
areas in Montana Fish, Wildlife &
Parks Region 6 are typically examined
each year from the air. While total
deer counts tend to be variable,
FWP Biologist Scott Thompson of
Malta said the 2014 surveys generally
indicate mule deer in most areas
are approaching long-term-average
(LTA) numbers again.
Region 6 mule deer, white-tailed
deer and pronghorn antelope numbers
took a big hit in the severe winter of
2010-11, and additional mortality
-- especially among whitetails -was caused by subsequent, scattered
outbreaks of epizootic hemorrhagic
disease, commonly known as EHD.

Total mule deer observed across
the region this year generally indicate
deer population trend and status
running about 10 percent below the
LTA, Thompson said. The trend
still shows an ongoing, gradual

recovery across the Region.

Fires could
be a
concern

A strong low pressure system will approach the

region on Wednesday and move through on Thursday.
Thursday includes much of eastern Montana. This will
be a good chance of thunderstorms and severe weather
to the area during the Wednesday-Thursdy time frame.
Gusty southeast winds ahead of the system with strong
northwest winds behind it will also be a concern for any
fires. Low humidity is expected as well and dry lightning
could also be a problem.
Tonight: Isolated showers and thunderstorms before
midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 63. Southeast
wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Wednesday: A 40 percent chance of showers and
thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 93.
East wind 9 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Wednesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely,

mainly before midnight. Some of the storms could produce
small hail and gusty winds. Mostly cloudy, with a low around
65. East wind around 21 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.
Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Thursday: A 30 percent chance of showers and
thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near
86. East wind 8 to 14 mph becoming west in the afternoon.
Winds could gust as high as 18 mph.
Thursday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and
thunderstorms, mainly before midnight. Mostly clear, with a
low around 58. Breezy, with a west northwest wind 20 to 25
mph decreasing to 14 to 19 mph after midnight. Winds could
gust as high as 38 mph.
Friday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms
before noon. Sunny, with a high near 81. West wind 15 to 18
mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

whitetail population was observed between 2008 and

2010, when numbers were observed to be 25 percent
above the LTA. At the time, some whitetail densities hit
an incredible 40 50 deer per square mile in some areas.
But EHD outbreaks and other factors helped trim those
numbers back considerably.
With whitetail numbers still relatively low, and in
accordance with recent F&W Commission rule-setting,
no antlerless B licenses will be available to hunters
anywhere in Region 6 this fall.

2014 Eastern "A" District Tournament

Sidney, MT July 23rd - 27th

And how about the Reds at District:

The Glasgow Reds take on Miles City Wednesday

at 10:00. Barring a Maverick Miracle, the Reds will play
the #4 Billings Cardinals or #5 Billings Cardinals on
Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
Winner of that game will play on Friday at 4:00.
If the bracket goes as the seedings suggest, the Reds
will be in semifinal action with the Laurel Dodgers on
Friday at 4:00.

Of course, this is why these tournaments are played.
Because the State A Tournament is in Lewistown, the
Redbirds automatically earn a berth as hosts. This leaves
just one team coming out of this reasonably strong Eastern
A, meaning a couple, perhaps three quality ball clubs will
have their season come to a close this weekend.

If the cream rises to the top, the Reds and the Dodgers
will be battling it out on Sunday (one of them will have to
battle through the back door), and hopefully the Reds will
have their number, winners of their last three meetings in
the regular season. Eastern A Standings

2014
is
the
International Year of
Family Farming and an
interesting article provided
information on the subject:
About 45% of the
world population makes
its living directly from
farming. A majority of
these farmers are women,
who produce up to 80% of
the worlds food!
In the United States,
family farms still constitute
96% of all farms. A farm
is given the family name
when operated by a family
which provides a majority
of the labor needed in the
operation, assumes the
economic risk, and makes
all management decisions.
This is considered the basis
of a safe, secure and stable
food system.
The total agriculture
sector contributes more
than $130 billion to the
U.S. economy, employs
approximately 14% of
the total work force and
accounts for nearly 5% of
the U.S. gross domestic
product.

a lot of ordinary folks up
