ABOUT THE 20142015 CALENDAR
After much deliberation, the School Board adopted the attached 20142015 academic calendar based on recommendations from
District leadership. The 20142015 school year will be the first since 2008 that Springfield schools have no furlough days.

This calendar represents the best efforts of the District, in collaboration with staff associations, to strike a balance as it reinvests
its limited resources in ways that allow it to continue improving student achievement. It also represents what the School Board
believes to be best for the instructional program as a whole, working within current budget limitations.

EARLY RELEASE FOR GRADES K8
The District has once again designated a number of days for collaboration. Collaboration time allows staff to collaborate and plan
together the best ways to support individual students without requiring additional no-school days. This collaboration time is key to
allowing schools to build the networks of support that can help all students achieve our vision of Every Student a Graduate
Prepared for a Bright and Successful Future. Just as school start and end times are staggered at different levels to make buses
available, so are the early release times. This year, middle schools will be released first, in response to parent input.
All middle schools will be released at 12:15 p.m.
All elementary schools will be released at 1:00 p.m.
Students in grades 112 will be served lunch just as they are on a regular school day.
Kindergarten release time will be coordinated around other student release times to allow the buses to be available and to
provide enough core instruction time for students.
All morning kindergarten classes will be released at 10:15 a.m.
Afternoon kindergarten classes will start early, at 11:00 a.m., with release at 1:00 p.m.
Kinder Plus programs will run MondayThursday only.
LATE START FOR GRADES 912
This year, high schools will have their collaboration time in the morning as late starts to allow for easier scheduling and to
respond to parent, student and staff concerns about the effect of early release on Friday with current high school schedules.
Gateways, Springfield and Thurston high schools will start at 10:00 a.m. on late start days and end at the regular time.
Buses will run at the regular, earlier time, however, and students will be provided with a supervised space until school
begins at 10 a.m.
KEY DATES
School will start on Sept. 3 for grades K5, 6 and 9, and Sept. 4 for Grades 7, 8 and 1012. School ends on Thursday,
June 11, a full day.
Winter Break is Dec. 22Jan. 2. Spring Break is March 2327.
There are 175 student contact days, including early release/late start days for collaboration. This is an increase of 3
days from the 20132014 school year and a significant increase from our low of 166 days in 20122013.
All District elementary schools are on trimester grading systems, while all middle and high schools are on semester
calendars. This public calendar contains information relevant to both systems. Please note that our charter schools, A
3

and Willamette Leadership Academy, have completely different calendars, which are available by contacting the schools.
Contact your childs school for more information or for any other questions about this calendar.
Transportation schedules will be available shortly after school registrations in August.
