Construction of a biomass heating power plant

in Augsburg East
2 3 Kraftanlagen Mnchen GmbH | Construction of a biomass district heating cogeneration plant in Augsburg East
General contractor for the engineering and turnkey construction
of a biomass heating power plant in Augsburg East.
Project description.
Customer
Stadtwerke Augsburg Energie GmbH
Plant description
The site of the plant is in the immediate vicinity of the gas
turbine plant in Augsburg-Lechhausen, which Kraftanlagen
Mnchen handed over to the customer in 2004.
Around 90,000 tons of woodchips fresh from the forest are
incinerated in the new biomass heating power plant each year
with an energy content equivalent to around 21 million liters
of heating oil. The generated electricity supplies over 20,000
households and the extracted district heat supplies 3,500 de-
tached houses. This brings the amount of energy generated by
Stadtwerke Augsburg to 28 %, thus increasing the security of
the supply for customers.

Plant description.
Furnace and water tube boiler
The biomass is transferred to the com-
bustion chamber by hydraulic feeders.
Incineration takes place on the air-
cooled forward-feed grate. The water
evaporates in the membrane-wall com -
bustion chamber and downstream fur-
nace pass. The superheater bundles are
installed in a horizontal position in the
third pass. The feedwater is preheated in
the upright economizer.
District heating
The energy from the steam extracted
from the turbine is transferred to the
district heating water in a steam/hot wa-
ter heat exchanger (heating condenser).
In the event of a turbine failure, the
steam supply to the heating condenser
can be maintained by means of a redu-
cing station. Pumps transport the heated
water to the municipal district heating
network through underground plastic-
cased piping
systems.
Technical data
Fuel

Mass flow 8 - 13.5 t/h

Calorific value 7 - 12 MJ/kg
Biomass boiler
Thermal furnance output 27.8 MW

Main steam volume 30 t/h

Main steam parameters 485 C, 65 bar

Steam turbine

Max. electrical power 7.66 MW

Condensation machine with one extraction point

District heating

Max. district heat output 15 MW

Forward/return temperatures 130/60 C

Underground plasticjacket pipe DN 350
Water/steam cycle
The steam from the biomass boiler is
converted into electricity in the steam
turbine. Steam for heating the district
heating water is extracted downstream
of the high-pressure section. The re mai n -
ing steam is condensed in the air con-
densation plant. The condensates are
transported to the feedwater tank and
are later fed into the biomass boiler for
evaporation.
Flue gas cleaning
The flue gases are cleaned in a double-
stage electrostatic filter system with an
up-stream multicyclone. The cleaned flue
gases are transported to the 37 m high
stack by means of an induced-draft fan.
A silencer ensures adherence to permit-
ted noise levels at the stack outlet.

technology are protecting the environment.
Electrical and instrumentation & control systems.
Operating concept
The biomass district heating cogeneration
plant is equipped for operation without
continuous supervision (24-hour interval).
The fully automated plant can be operated
and monitored from the process control
system in the control room.
Instrumentation & control system
The plant is fully integrated into the existing
instrumentation & control system of Stadt-
werke Augsburg and can be remotely ope-
rated from any other of their plants through-
out the city. Similarly, all other plants can be
operated and monitored from the new bio-
mass heating power plant.
High level safety technology: operating concept and
control systems of the biomass heating power plant.
Electrical systems
The biomass heating power plant has an
auxiliary power transformator as well
as LV- and MV-switchgears and is fitted
with a Siemens PCS7 process control
system.

A controlled shutdown of the plant is gua-
ranteed, since the process systems as well
as the compressed air supply and the
auxiliary cooling water systems can be
powered interruption-free even in case
of a power outage. A fire detection sys-
tem ensures maximum fire protection.

Fuel
Woodchips produced from untreated
virgin wood in accordance with the Re-
newable Energy Act are used exclusively
as fuel. These are mainly obtained from
small-diameter wood from the region
which cannot be used for the production
of other materials. The water content of
the fuel is in the range 30 to 60 %.
Fuel storage and transport
90,000 tons of virgin woodchips fresh
from the forest are delivered annually by
road. The fuel is stored in an open space
warehouse with a capacity of 12,000 m.
From there front-end loaders are used
to transport the fuel to two redundant
moving-floor conveyors. Hydraulic con-
veyor equipment and down stream drag
chain conveyors trans port the wood to
the infeed shaft for the biomass boiler.
Combined heat and power
The new biomass heating power plant
operates according to the principle of
combined heat and power. The simultaneous generation of
electricity and heat achieves a fuel efficiency of over 70 %.
In addition to this around 55,000 tons of CO emissions are
avoided annually, since only the same amount of CO is re-
leased during the incineration of biomass as was previously
consumed when the raw material was growing.
