MAIN DRIVE ASSEMBLY
PREVENTING BLANK COPIES
Outline
A resistor has been added to the main motor driver board to prevent blank copies from occurring due to a
faulty main motor manufactured by Matsushita.
Details
[Phenomenon]
The following phenomenon may occur with products which contain a main motor manufactured by
Matsushita.
Blank images halfway down the 1st copy.
Blank images on the 1st copy, registration displacement on the 2nd copy or registration roller stationary
jams.
[Cause]
Because of tolerance variations in IC1 located on the main motor driver board manufactured by Matsushita,
some motors have more leakage current than others. Therefore, the current leaked is dis-charged to the
external capacitor attached to IC1 in standby state, therefore, the warm-up time takes about 1 second when
an ON signal is input to the main motor. Because the copier software uses the FG signal of the main motor
as a reference clock signal, the high-voltage timing outputs may be delayed.
[Factory measure]
A discharge resistor of 100 K (1/4W) has been added to the main motor driver boards manufactured by
Matsushita.
To distinguish which main motor boards resistors have been added to, the version no. on the affixed label
has been changed from 01 to 02.

Measures for servicing
When any of the aforementioned phenomena occurs in the field, replace the main motor unit with the new
one or add a 100 K resistor to those main motors manufactured by Matsushita.
See the Service Manual, pg. 4-22 for details of main motor replacement.
When replacing the main motor, re-use the
attached gear and pulley. The structure is
shown in Fig. 2.
Notes
When handling the main motor, hold the base section; do not hold the rotor section.
After installing the main motor, turn the main motor more than 180 in the A direction, as indicated by the
arrow, and check that the belt turns in the B direction (see the arrow).

Adding the resistor to the main motor unit
Add the resistor (VR5-3680-104) to the printed circuit board (gear side) of the main motor in the position
shown in the figure below.
Note: When adding the resistor, use great care not to use excessive amounts of solder or heat.
