ME 188 Power Plant Engineering

SAMPLE THIRD EXAMINATION

This is for review purposes only and other problems may be
included in the actual examination.

Instruction:

Write your name on the top right hand corner of each page. Identify the problem
on each page and start each problem on a new page. Write on one side (front
page) of the paper but you may use the back page as scratch paper.

Use only A4 size white bond paper, stapled at the top left hand corner. Do not
detach nor add any paper. If you need additional paper, ask your instructor for
additional paper then staple it at the top left hand corner. Any non stapled paper
will not be checked. All things including cellphones must be deposited in front of
the class.

Part 1: Pen and paper only. (10 points each, 40 points total)

1. Draw the schematic and T-S diagrams of a double-flash, liquid-dominated,
with one binary system at the hot re-injection side, geothermal power
plant system showing gas ejection and abatement, mufflers and silencers,
cooling tower, cold re-injection side and thermal pond. (15%)

2. Draw the schematic diagram of a solar thermal central receiver system
powerplant. (5%)

3. Draw the schematic flow and T-S diagrams of a Claude OTEC power plant
system. (10%)

4. Draw the schematic flow and T-S diagrams of an Anderson OTEC power
plant system. (10%)

5. Derive the power coefficient of a wind turbine. (5%)

6. Define and sketch a photovoltaic power plant system. (5%)

7. Define and sketch a fuel cell power plant system. (5%)

8. Define and sketch a tidal power plant system. (5%)

9. Define and sketch a wave power plant system. (5%)

Part 2: Submit Part 1 anytime before beginning Part 2. Open book
only. (20 points each problem, 60 points total)

In answering part 2, draw the schematic and T-s diagrams first and label
completely. State the given parameters and then write down what is needed.
Start your solutions from the equation of what is needed. Solve the state by
identifying the two independent parameters. Substitute your values into the
equation. Encircle your answer with their units.
